1:30am .. not that this isnt terrible, but how much worse it could've been at rush hour is almost unimaginable!
It would have been a horror show at rush hour. Traffic was almost non existent at 130am but it would have been hundreds of missing people at rush hour.
Although the shipowner is liable, there would have been a pilot onboard. This was a container ship and the pollution concerns are different.
The ship people told their supervisors about the ship having issues and they did nothing.
They lost power and control over the vessel. It became a torpedo moving at 9 mile an hour. There was nothing to be done to stop it.
Это ужасно. Искренние соболезнования всем пострадавшим и их родственникам.
I heard from other news that the power could've shut down on the ship and without power the pilot couldn't steer the ship properly. The ship was loaded with cargo containers (heavy) and is about 1000ft long. Ship leaving Baltimore headed to Sir Lanka. Possibly 20 bridge contruction workers went down. Not sure about passenger cars as traffic very low at 1:30 AM
It lost power.
You dont see this every day
Initial reaction is, that taking out one support column, shouldn't cause that much of the bridge to collapse.
So either the bridge hasn't had repairs and strengthening done for a long time or, it was some kind of terrorist attack.
As someone pointed out earlier, there would be an experienced river pilot aboard, so for him to guide the ship into the support, in the way it hit the support is suspect.
You’re an expert in bridge construction, especially this particular bridge?
sounds like the accident with a cargo ship in Hobart Tasmania decades ago.
That's exactly what came to my mind. We still don't know how many lives have been lost but like the Hobart incident it thankfully happened in off peak hours. There were no cell phones in 1974 and and technology is so much more advanced now so hopefully that helps
This is horrific and sad. I have always had a fear of crossing over large bridges because I never learned to swim. I can't even imagen the fear that those people had as they fell into the water. I hope and pray they are all safe but I fear many are not. This is a very sad day in Boston.
1. Swimming is easy enough to get the hang of and it's never too late to learn - it's more about building confidence.
2. My own fear of deep water was cured after my first scuba dive.
This happened in Baltimore, MD not Boston, MA.
It is horrible, God bless you 🎆
Being able to swim, in itself, is just one small aspect of this.
That looks like a huge drop, and hitting water from a height is almost like hitting cement, depending on how you fall, resulting in unconsciousness and broken limbs and often death. Other hazards are hitting or landing on something solid on the way down or at water level, or being in a vehicle, where you have the impact issue plus being able to get out once you hit the water if you are still conscious. So pretty awful all round.
Boston? This happened in Baltimore my friend!?!?
Very difficult to sink a container ship . The collision bulk head and the cofferdam space would have stopped flooding in number 1 hold.
How do you not see a bridge when it’s lit up & you have proximity alarms on your ship & your not at sea so should be actually looking out the windows…
Steering failure
A boat that big they relies on a Navigation system marine GPS people and digital charts to see where they are. It’s possible it was Hacked or cyber attack on the digital guidance system.
It is also very difficult to slow, stop, or reverse a ship that big.
@@timeless74 why cite the probable when there’s a conspiracy theory to be had?
@@boxsterman77 I’m just curious for more information.

Hope all are ok and rescued, no deaths 😢

The water there is only about 25 feet deep or so. I have gone crabbing right at that location.
So dumping a few 100 tons of rock since 1970 to protect the bridge from container ships would not have been a problem.
@@Fastandpro Nah… that would have made too much sense !
@@Fastandpro I am not sure what your point is. There is nothing preventing any ship from getting right up next to the support columns that held the bridge up. There isn't any way you an prevent such an accident. That's just a case of hindsight being 20/20 and not understanding that bridges are in fact vulnerable.
@@The_Prince_Of_Crows A bridge designed in 1970 would need very little protection from container ships at the time. In the same picture, you can see pylons for Electricity well-protected. The ship was stopped by the bridge showing the force required was not that much, and deflection curves require even less. We are blowing up bridges in Germany for design failures and rust. A lot newer and in better condition than that. Let us see what the previous 15 million dollar report said, and what action was recommended.
@@Fastandpro Maryland has some of the worst infrastructure issues in the whole US. I say that as a Maryland resident. We have bridges that are propped up with wood structures and shims. Yet this bridge actually has protection for those columns. It just wasn't sufficient to stop such a large vessel moving at 9 mph. It would have been better to let it drift on through the gap without dropping anchor and reversing engines that caused the ships course to shift towards the columns.
Good thing Singapore has deep pockets, b/c those liability suits are gonna come hard and fast.
ISIS did it not Sri Lanka
Video indicate the ship may have lost main power before the impact.
where was the pilot and the captain, not looking ahead, obviously,
On TikTok best guess. Distracted. Maybe with a mistress. Not looking. That’s what
nonsense most likely malfunction of steering gear or blackout
The Fairway is dredged to 15.5m and the centre span is 56.3m above Highest astronomical Tide. The Fairway is very well buoyed and lit under IALA B compliance. The Vessel must have had a serious mechanical breakdown leaving it unable to manoeuvre or there was a serious navigation error made by the port pilot or bridge team if the vessel had a Port pilot exemption. Hoping everyone involved is ok, but it looks like a horrendous incident. Baltimore's economy will be very hard hit as it's the main waterway although many big industry wharfs are to seaward.
Speedy recovery to all those affected 🙏🏽🙏🏽. Greetings from Ballito, South Africa 🇿🇦
I’m shocked that the entire bridge collapsed like that, especially if cargo ships are passing under the bridge regularly 🫤
Yeah, under, not into because they don’t have height clearance. I’m not surprised the bridge collapsed given how tall the vessel was.
Under the captain's command, the ship rammed the bridge head-on!
2 pilots onboard
Glad to see the UA-cam armchair marine crash investigation team out in force.
And they are thinking of having fully autonomous container ships
I say this all the time: "What could go wrong?"
It doesn't matter if it's a computer or a person at the helm if you don't have power. As this just showed.
@rjkism The main reason that so-called self-driving vehicles are allowed to be developed is that computers are statistically far better operators than the majority of humans the majority of the time. It's not relevant to this tragedy. But, as you brought that topic up, I had to debunk it. I'm not saying we're there with autonomous cars yet. However, your opinion of automation is not generally warranted. Improper maintenance of all systems could defeat any design. Also, human override of recommended safe usage will easily *cause* a disaster. ( Challenger disaster, anyone? )
Ports and inland waterways would still demand a local pilot for all big ships regardless of what degree of autonomous engineering is in play. A lot of what is in use is very automated already. Crews turn dials and push buttons. Nobody is hauling on sail rigging (whatever) like in old pirate sailing movies anymore.
I'm not surprised that it collapsed, Maryland's roads are horrible
There is always a harbour pilot on board, i.e. someone who knows the strite from port authority. I can only assume the vessel lost power and backup systems failed also or captain was tired.
There were two harbor pilots on board but it lost power multiple times moving at 9 miles an hour toward the column.
Thanks for the update. I knew there was an obvious explanation really.Ha.
@@freevent28 no problem my friend. Glad I could help.

Noooo😢 i live in london one of my favourite things in london Goodbye, My loveable bridge
This was in Baltimore, Maryland. Wrong side of the pond.
I would have thought the pilot would have centred a span long before going forward..
How do you crash into a bridge..sabotage ??
From what ive seen multiple people say is that there was likely a mechanical issue with the steering wheel.
I guess we just have to wait for an investigation to be held.
Yes, Singapore got insulted by sen Cotton and decided to avenge
Who was steering the ship?
Isn't it obvious? Putin of course
There could have been a mechanical steering issue.
There could have been any number of things. But it’s ok to say we don’t know.
Could the ship controls be hacked?? It is almost too unbelievable...Or someone behind the helm with a personality disorder in a crisis??? Look at that harsh course correction towards the pilon just before the bridge...
if the ship lost power it would be near impossible to stop or control
It couldn't have been a very sturdy bridge.
Any idiot can stack concrete and make something standup, but Engineers get paid to make something barely stand up.
No safety beacons. No safety lighting. Completely avoidable.
Surely the cargo ship company is gonna be held responsible for this!
they will be and whoever has the Insurance will pay. the bill will be enormous. Those who can claim will be the Port, The Owners of the Bridge inc lost road tolls. The ship owner for all costs of restoring it back to sea.
100+ lawyers have been activated. Insurance claims to exceed 100's of millions of dollars.
Pootins fault, didn't warn the US prior to the collision.....
No it was Trump.
You could see the lights go out and back on repeatedly like it lost power
This is so sad I’m sorry this has happened Baltimore. Big hugs
What a complete failure of duty by the Crew this will cost them dearly.
Some people are saying a power failure on the ship, which sounds most likely. In which case it is an accident.
It must have been deliberate

Must be a deeper meaning to this incident...😢
Like the deep meaning of your comment you mean?
Bridge falls down on top of the container ship. You can see how the bridge just folded . Questions about the poor Quality of the steel been use. Suspected laminate RSJ been use. Container ship tried to float underneath the falling bridge to support the bridge as the was cars on the bridge when it collapsed.
We said don't let Stevie wonder drive no one listens anymore
Luckily it's not the Hauthis.
Can you imagine the last words on the Bridge of the ship … oops!!
Excited footage from the onlooker video, sums up the human race
US trying to bring down Kerch bridge, does it make you think that God is not on your side and is sending you a message? Sympathy for the poor people caught up in this.
it didnt collapse ffs it got knocked down!!!!
Ukraine need more American money than American infrastructure and bridges
better not be a repeat of 1989 Exxon Valdez, hope all the marine life are safe
It wasn’t an oil tanker. It was a container ship.
Crimean bridge? Ups Baltimore... Karma is a b....
Just news to cover P diddy house raids 😂

The red nav lights are still working on the bridge towers, so hopefully no planes or helicopters will crash into it, but after seeing this tragedy, who knows....
i doubt aircraft or helicopters would fly so low, its merely a few metres above the water level
@@Icelandair_B767 Not meant to be serious Karen, I doubt any one would expect a container ship to hit the pylon after 47 years look what happened...

Do your sarcastic sh** routine elsewhere, troll...be a part of the solution, not the problem - if you have any compassion for the victims caught up in this accident, express it; if you have the brains to be on the crew that rebuilds the bridge, go do it.
"Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong stated that Singapore is not an ally of the U.S."
This ship is from Singapore. Not starting a conspiracy! Just hope an investigation to make certain it was not intentional.
Ukraine is to blame....
I think the Bridge construction or at least maintenance needs a close look even considering it was only 50 years old it should not have collapsed like that. The other spans should have survived but they fell like a card tower
Are you an engineer?
Yes but more so on aerodynamics but that does include alot of work on stresses
F=M x A .....1000 foot long fully loaded container ship loosing control ramming a support dead straight on ......Gee...How could the bridge collapse just from that ?
Russia is responsible. It is the FSB 'talking' to the West.
It's clear it was a cheapskate bridge with build cost largely coming before public safety,
The podiums have been constructed without sufficient foresight in engineering this bridge, they should have been large enough to deflect a ship, a foreseeable risk.
The bridge also appears to have far from sufficient structural strength compounded by poor design, just looking at it I would never have driven across it under any circumstances.
It's an engineering failure, it's political failure, penny pinching public officials threw this pile of junk into public use,
it probably would have just fallen without a ship being involved in a period of time, it's time for a few prosecutions.
Think you might need to get back in school chief, the weight of the ship and its momentum would probably take out most bridges with ease.
@@mitchellbooth8435 It Should be a worst-case scenario to take out one span like the Chinese Tofu bridge a few weeks ago. There is a report on UA-cam of another American bridge collapse caused by sheer incompetence and maintenance of a rust bucket of junk. Let's wait for the report and see.
@@Fastandpro It will certainly be interesting
