I'm glad I bought a Tacoma, I can't count the number of times I have been driving and wanted toast :)
hahahaha
🤣🤣🤣
There's not enough power with two of those inverters tied together to run a single toaster.
Haha! I love my Tacoma, but this is great 😂
😂
I have a 2016 trd sport and never use the bed outlet . You have saved me a lot of guess works . Your video is very informative. Thanks 👍🏼
Good video, but putting those tools and appliances to their intended purposes would be helpful. I have a 2017 Off Road and use the electrical outlet a lot, but it is obviously light duty. I charge my Sony DSLR, my Bose speakers, and other devices that can’t be charged from a 12 bolt outlet. Portable tools would certainly fall into that category at least, even if they performed poorly under a load. I also am able to run a small air compressor to air up when I get back to civilization. I never thought of taking a blender, but the concept of trail margaritas is certainly appealing! And the Yeti holds ice for days. I have even charged items while driving. Just make sure they are tightly packed. I leave my camera in its case, which is amply padded. Works great!
I have a Tacoma. This is one of those items I would have never added to a purchase, but when I found out about it, use it all the time. It really comes in handy.
What do you use it for? After ruining 2 c😅free makers I’m afraid to plug anything else in
Used to power my son's JBL EON 1 when he'd set up to jam guitar in the park. 2014 Tacoma 4x4 TRD.
JBL is "380 watts of power, 118 dB max".
Also had a pedal board plugged into a power strip. Wah wah, boost, etc.
Performed flawlessly with engine off and I'd crank engine every so often so as to not drain battery.
Hed play about 2hrs , aeems like your truck should run a toaster!
Great video!
This is the only video explaining thoroughly, thanks bud!
How long can you run something under 100watts before draining the battery?
Had my '09 for about 11 months now and still discovering how to use my crap! Love my truck
Got an 07 and for 6 months I didn't know how to get in 4 low.
Bro thank you so much for a wonderful video! 👍🏻 You dove right into it! Sick of people who love hearing themselves talk unbelievable!
When the Tacoma is running, I use a small hedge trimmer on a 25 ft. cord to cut down the yearly growth on a bank next to the road...faster than using both a chainsaw, lopping shears and a weedeater!
Good video. Yesterday I couldn't run my friends 5 gal. dewalt compressor. Tried everything running and not running. Rats! Even went on a road trip with an office fridge, that didn't work. Not giving up! My Taco is 2013 and I love the truck! So thanks for the info.
Office fridge, that is impressive!
Great video. Tacoma’s are the best
When you pull over on the side of the road with your Christmas tree thats lit up in the back and start making some holiday toast and waffles on your tail gate cuz your girl said shes hungry.
Hilarious😂
Awesome video on demonstrating the power outlet. Thanks. I see you bike ride. That’s another reason I bought my Taco. Can you one day do a video on how you transport the bikes in the bed of the truck. I know everyone has their way of doing it and I’d like to get other people’s way of doing it. I sort of line mine up in the bed then strap them down. Since mine is the short bed I can’t close the tailgate. Sometimes I need to put in 4+ bikes in mine and it starts getting tricky.
LSanti hang the front tires up and over the tail gate with a furny pad
Aren't there tags on the appliances that stipulate wattage/voltage, etc.?
Wonder how long you can run power with truck off before battery is screwed? I'm thinking a sleep machine if you were camping🤔
Will the plug turn off before it kills the battery of the truck or will it go till the battery is dead when the truck is not running.
That is a great question. Hat tip.
Uh, all of the items should have watts & Amp rating on them...
Ssssshhhhhh, never interrupt a child when he’s learning.
@@trickhealey Doesn't cover startup amps
Reading the watts and amp would make for an extremely boring video. We aren’t in shop class.
You could also just read the transcript of this video but where's the fun in that?
He knows bruh. Shush.
Good demonstration. I actually have a 2015 Toyota Tacoma and it has the TRD package with the power outlet and I actually can run a compressor but it's one of those small ones that has the little fill up tank so I think it depends on the size compressor that you're trying to power.
2015 TRD? Nice! I just turned in my 2015 prerunner
Apparently 2015 was a really good year I didn’t know till I sold it. They have been holding value but I chose to sell before they dropped anymore. I hope yours never lets you down
Thank you ! I am a 60 yr old that has a 2020 Tacoma I have no idea how things work!
Nice!! Would the outlet charge a 12V by 9ah battery ??
When you turned the truck on did you bump up on the switch to 400 rather then 100? It appeared that you went to just turn the truck on not the switch in the cab, it has to be bumped up to 400 setting it was probably in the 100 mod setting, if you had set it @ 400 when you started the truck the compressor would had worked, just running the truck does not turn the switch automatically to 400 I have an 017 tacoma trd offroad my switch has 2 settings on it 100 & 400 using the 400 setting you can run the compressor no problem the ac outlet can pretty much handle anything as long as the switch is in correct setting just wanted to clarify that on this feature.
I dont think you can switch between watts. You simply toggle power to outlet. The truck determines watts based on whether truck is running or not.
Will it kill the outlet if you are using it without the truck running and the battery starts getting low? Just asking cause I want to use it with the truck off while fishing but want buy truck to start so I can leave.
Afaik, that outlet in the bed is just a hardwired 400 watt power inverter. I've run a Skil saw and cut a handful of 2x4s a while back, was no problem but I think I did have the engine running.
Mine is TRD Tacoma, this morning (4/12/2023) used a saw (7.5Amp, 3200RPM) to cut trees around farm, it performed very poorly even with the truck running.
Can you explain why? It’s because of the Amp, the Voltage, the length if the extension cord I connected?
Nice video. Only think missing is that the 400 does not work in vehicle is moving. Many would like to have a portable fridge for tailgating, problem is it won’t run on the way to the game.
I have the same problem with it kicking me off the 400 once in Drive. Now I have to buy the cigarette lighter adapter ($100) to use my devise while driving. Is there a way to stay in 400 all the time?
You can override / mod so that you can use 400 watts while not in Park ....
Dustin Hinds where did you find a override mod?
Thank you for saying that, I've been wondering why the 400w light wasn't coming on. I just tested it while parked, and it does. (I'm reading through the manual, but haven't gotten that far.)
@@CQN1HN I guess that mods not coming is it
The inverter is under the center console. It is not under the hood.
Wouldnt tjat drained your battery since the engine is not running?
I have 2017 trd Tacoma that just today I ran a 80' extension cord into the kitchen hooked up my washing machine had no problem running so if I should ever have my electric shut off needing to wash clothes it will work just fine.
Trying to boil water for hot chocolate and noodles for the kids. Water boiler wasn’t working, it would just turn off after a while without boiling the water. Ended up using the jet. Any advice on a good electric one that works and can load in a fair amount of water.
how long can you run things through that power outlet before it kills the truck's battery..?
If you don’t have electric converter in bed before buying Tacoma can you have it installed at dealership before you buy Tacoma, and will it be as capable if installed
Mine is showing an open ground. Have you actually tested the outlet. Don’t think it will charge a power station unless it is bonded. Do you have any info on that?
Great. I'm going to run out and buy some Christmas lights so I can decorate my Tacoma next Christmas.
It’s about that time sir
LOL BRO I didn’t think of that and I got my Tacoma in November aww man :(
They won't run in Drive or Reverse
I have a taco, and I can make my tacos with the help of this outlet, thank you Toyota 😁👍
Great vid but I'm curious why the compressor wouldn't run with the truck on?? Seems like that would be max power
Awesome just picked up a 2020 I assumed you could just plug stuff in and it works good to know about the toggle switch guess I could read owners manual LOL wondering if it’s possible to blow fuses using this option. The shop light would work great as well as a makeshift reverse light deep forest camping what not.👍
the switch itself is actually the fuse it will turn off if the draw is too much
Thank goodness for this video.
Have you seen how thick the owners manual is on the 2019 Tacoma.
BTW, by the time you got to the waffle iron, I lost count what test number it was. 😄
Yes Thank God indeed
Have the 2019 Tacoma Double Cab TRD Sport, Very good video, helpful👍
Thank you for showing me how to use this feature
Tools/appliances with no load are not a realistic test. For the no-goes, did you check to see if the breaker tripped?
I could power a small coffee maker with mine (with the engine running) BUT I had to reset the breaker a couple of times.
Can I use this for camping like to connect a heater and leave it on all night ??
What about Domenic fridge?
Help! My Christmas lights won't turn on. Is it because I'm using the big bulbs?
They won't run in drive or reverse. You have to be in park for safety reasons
How long can you run power from that outlet with the vehicle being off ? Sorry if this is a ridiculous question.
U think i can run a plug in heater with this?
Ok but how do you get it to stay on while you are driving? Is this a possibility? As soon as I put my clutch in or am in gear it cute the power to it.
Should have tried a Skil saw they take a lot of amps to get going
Christmas lights wont work if the vehicle is in drive or reverse. They shut off when you put it in those gears. They only work when KOEO or in park or neutral. Learned from experience ;)
oh so lame! I was just thinking I should take advantage of that.
The moment of truth!!!!!! Deeeeeeng it :( just came here for that 😂) great explanation!
Nice video! I noticed you have a xc ski profile in the back of your video. Would the ac plug power a waxing iron? I was also wondering if the ac plug would power a electric blanket on those cold night? Thanks in advance!
Nick
I'm guessing it would do both. Using it for a ski iron would be a great use! With an electric blanked I'd worry about draining the battery.
It’s good for things such as if u have to cut something do a short job pump up a tire what not, but for me we have a camp we go to now and then and I thaught it would be great just to plug it into the truck and run lights and radio instead of using the generator, the problem I see with it is it only works with the key on the on position instead of accessories, which means the headlights and taillights are on all the time as well as interior dash lights radio etc ! Kind of defeats the purpose unless I’m doing something wrong
Why don't you just read the amp rating on the device being used? Watts/Volts=Amps 100W/120V=.83A 400w/120V=3.33A
Electrical engineer he ain't! But nothing wrong with trial and error effort.
Because some people would like to actually see it and don't know much about electricity
Hey guys I'm super ignorant when it comes to electrical stuff ... I tried a coffee maker on taco outlet that says 900 watts and worked fine.
Wondering if an 1000 watts Griddle would work ???
Would this run the dometic cfx345 while traveling? Vs cigarette lighter and having it in cab from point a to b? Then I could use the jackery once at camp when the truck is off. Any insight?
I have a 4runner, same out put, 100w - 400 w, I used it for a full-size vacuum.....
Hi there hope you can help me. I have 2018 Tacoma and my truck was on and I turned on the ECT PWR button and click on the 400w/110v and I was using electric tea pot and for some reason the 400w/100v keep turning off every 30 sec. Why is that? I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. Please help
My guess would be that the draw is too much for the system. Could be that the draw increases at 30 seconds as well...
How much did that compressor require? I'm assumin a 120v miter saw will work with no issue right?
Why didn't the compressor work. Just took my Taco camping and couldn't get a hotplate to work. Have had success with leaf blower and power drill.
Should work with one of those small accessory compressors so you can air your tires up as needed.
Great video!
Thank you!

Interesting. Anybody know if there is an electric coffee pot that will work with this? Thanks
I'm going to drag my home coffee pot out there today and find out! Planning on limited car camping in my new to me 2010 FJ Cruiser with this option but I MUST have coffee in the morning!
Can a freezer or frig work during a power outage?
I have tried 2 different coffee makers and neither would work . The funny thing is they wouldn’t work after plugging them into the Tacoma outlet. Ruined both of them. Not sure why?
If it quits working, switch doesn’t even light up. Whats wrong? Which one of the thousand fuses is it?
Can I run(while driving) a dometic refrigerator? I have a jacjery1000 to use when my truck is not running?
would a hair dryer work?
do you keep the truck on (pressing the start button twice, not stepping on the brakes) but not running? or we can turn it off after pressing on the 400 w switch??? THanks!
For full power output it needs to be on. For low wattage devices it can be off.
can one swap out and upgrade the power inverter?
and, fwiw, most tools + appliances should have their wattage on a label somewhere. I have a Hilti hammer drill that wouldn't work on the 600 watt inverter that came with my work truck but works fine with the 800 watt inverter I connect to the truck battery when running.
oh, and nicely done video. I booped the like fer ya...
The stock power supply is pretty useless. How do you increase the capacity?
I confused as an electrician you can only get 3 amps with 400 watts so why didn’t the fuse blow
So I can hook up a small welder to it?
Yea ibreally wonder
how about a PS4 W/ a portable gaming monitor???
No way, a tv and a ps4 use far too much power for that.
how long does that shit last? The life of the battery in the car?
How long can each setting power something? Battery drain to dead?
The vehicle automatically shuts off after 15 minutes of power being used and the truck not running.
I managed to drain my 6 months old battery by plugging in a fishfinder battery charger (only 4.6 amp)... obviously even 15 mins can drain enough to kill battery. Luckily I had a friend with powerful starter battery. But I learned my lesson. will get a power bank as I really don't want to run the car and fume up my campsite for charging. Really not designed to do much w/o car running in my eyes
NATSCHKE FAMILY ADVENTURES confirmed? Is this in the manual or how do you know for sure?
Wouldnt that kills the battery if the engines not running
Yes
How fast will this kill ur battery
How long can it run an item while the truck is running? I’m going camping soon and wondering how long it can run a movie projector with the truck on. Will it last the length of the movie or is there a good chance the bed will die on me? Not sure how that all works. Thanks for the help!
Should last as long as the engine is running if it has the power to operate. For something like a movie you might be better off with a small generator so you're not wasting a ton of gas
You think it will charge my boat battery on the way to the lake?
Stops working when car is put into gear. Must be in park.
so can you charge another battery via the method in the video? (instead of having a dual battery system)
So would be easier to see what tool you want to use requires more power than the truck can put out?
I used my single Keurig maker while traveling, using this method
Very useful to know.
Why didn’t you just check the amp requirements on each device then get items based on that??
Ninja air fryers don't work on it either 😂
If anybody has successfully used an air fryer on the outlet let a girl know 😂😂😂
don't forget if you use the battery work the drill you going to kill the battery when the pickup truck is off
Will the outlet work while you are driving. I need 110 for We Boost Cell Boster on the road?
Don't see why not.
How about a small shop vac ??
great video :)
How can you run the outlet while driving? I was really hoping I could charge my goal zero in my slide in camper in the bed of truck while driving.
Just plug it in, and go drive?
@@montanamike7948 looks like my goal zero draws 130 watts while charging and Tacoma only works for up to 100 watts while driving.
This is an assured test. Beginning with test number 4 at 100watts would likely be fail if tested properly under load. Instead of plugging in a drill and running it, try to actually drill a hole or cut something. More likely than not, the breaker would kick over or the fuse would fly.
I use my drill and saws weekly and have never had a problem. Just a few minutes ago I ran a leaf blower with no issues. I also run a pancake air compressor (vehicle needs to be running) but also no issues.
What about using a power strip? To change cell phones & GPS
Most electrical items will tell you how much power they consume. I wouldn't be putting a 450 watt plus item on there, even if it seems to work, it won't for long. Damage to the item & the inverter is a likely result. A little common sense goes a long way.
Loop
When i have my key to on and running my buffer at the car wash , it sounds like my fuel injectors are going on periodically . which can cause oil dilution etc. If it isnt the fuel injectors , then what is running ? for about 5 sec. at a time , every 5 min/10 min,
Sounds like your radiator fan is kicking on....
LOL, nope ,, I def know what the fan sounds like.... When u first turn your key to the on position , u can hear the injectors ,for priming the engine... Sounds exactly the same...
It is your fuel pump running
I got a 2021 SR5 and it did not come equipped with this :( Would it be particularly difficult or expensive to add one?
I wouldn't try to add one. Just buy a portable power station like one of these: amzn.to/37lkRqA
@@DrivenCompanion I see this, but part of the appeal of the built in one is running tools while to engine is running, basically acting as a generator.
I was using a sawzall to cut some branches on a trail, it struggled but got the job done
bronxbomber thats cool !
Next time use a battery operated one. Or use a gasoline 2 stroke chainsaw. I use a 4 stoke chainsaw cuz i like the extra tourqe but its heavy. It is a 200cc vtwin. The blade never jams now. It has a different type of clutch too its a tourqe converter and single rotary gear. Beast saw
What’s up Mike, can You specify which your Tacoma Trim Level ?? And if you know if this outlet is standard for all Tacomas. Nice video Bro !!!
Typhoon MAWAR hit Guam and finally I use my 2014 Tacoma power outlet...I use portable washer
Will it continue to give off power while in drive ?
Yes it will. There are some Tacoma owners out there using them for christmas lights while driving
@@DrivenCompanion my 2019 shuts off once I go into drive. Wanted Christmas lights
Do the 2015 tacos have power in the beds?
Yes, this was a feature on the 2nd gen Tacoma too
@@DrivenCompanion I'm getting one soon an csnt wait to take it out camping
I've tried a hot plate to heat up boiling water while camping. 30 minutes, truck on... Luke warm at the highest setting.
Yes anything that draws for heat is gona take way too much for it to handle
Just saw your video, very informative, only issue is, apparently the bed outlet isn’t available on the ‘18 SR5😢
Nope only trd
Nice, but real test is determining powrr consumption of your plugins. That can predict if it will run on the Taco outlet.
