I've really been on a Joker fixed blade bender here lately. Just fell in love with the handles, the sheaths, the matching fire steels, the various blade shapes, the value.. The knife buying urge comes in waves like that for me, then Months of buying nothing. My saving grace has always been that I just don't go for any of the really expensive ones. A nice RR often does the trick. I usually watch my UA-cam Knife Guys review a knife for me, then once you are an expert on it, put in the time, you have to buy one. I bet HAVING a UA-cam knife channel REALLY gives you an excuse to indulge.
If you have a large knife collection already, you need to be more selective in what you want to add to your collection. Looking more and buying less is a goal to try. You get more out of your knife collection if you study the ones you already have. When I see a new knife model, I look at what is in my collection I have already. Most times the newest one is not as good as one I already have. What makes you happy buying knives, or using them? Are you a shopper or collector? Do you know how many knives you have? Do you know how much you spent on knives? You cannot grasp reality until you come to a concussion from the facts. 🐯👍

Only recently have I taken control of my knife-buying senses...but I'm the kinda guy who buys a dozen pair of skis (for various legitimate purposes of course) or 13 canoes (real canoes of various sizes/purposes) or 8 camping tents, 5 sleeping bags, yada yada yada. 🙄 After retiring I did downsize all of that but that is also when I found knife collecting so I guess all I really did was switch possessions. Like you though, taking stock of the process and re-evaluating has been a relief. Have a good 4th William.
I have a friend who is totally impulse-driven. 1. Discovery. 1.2. purchase. No deliberation, research, price comparison, nothing. See-buy. I finally had to quit talking knives with her, worried that she was going broke. I’ve got the cheapness gene which keeps me looking for the best deal. Lucky.
That's a good gene to have. I'm fortunate in that a new knife for me can be a cheap novelty knife. If it's new and I like it, it can give me just as much joy as a much more expensive knife.
Unless I see something that really catches my eye, looking for a bargain or trying to pay a low price, keeps down on unnecessary purchases, even then I buy if it is something that adds to my collection, i.e. a different blade shape or knife pattern I don't own.
