      Trying to film on the streets of Barcelona was a bit of a nightmare... as I’m sure you can imagine. Cars beeping, lorries reversing, people just walking in front of shot... and we generally only ever get a couple of hours to do everything. I was pretty stressed by the end of it all.
      Unless me ‘shutting up’ was refreshing.. will never happen 😉

      Not making any excuses - I just do what I can in the time and situation I’m dealt with. Some guys do it better, but often have someone shooting video so everything is a little more polished.

    Panasonic’s argument about flipscreen at 3‘38‘‘ is a bit silly. Isn‘t the GH5 a professional camera? I should think so. The G9 also has a flipscreen and unhindered access to HDMI, headphone jack etc.. There are rumours about Canon having patented the flipscreen for FF cameras. Not sure about that, but the lack of flipscreen certainly is a negative. Not so much from a vlogging perspective, as you wouldn‘t vlog with this brick anyway. It is about flexibility for tricky angles where the flippy really is helpful.

    Richard how do you like the s1 compared to the z6?

    • @Photogearnews
      @Photogearnews  5 років тому +2

      Not used the Z6 aside from the launch event so my opinion is pretty much purely on handling - and full disclosure, I was a Nikon user before switching to Sony - I’d get the Z6 of the two.
      That view, again, is based on size, weight and general handling. It doesn’t taking image quality or AF in to account at all as not really used AF on either and the S1 isn’t final firmware (and come to think of it not was the Z6 I used).
      Where the S1 absolutely slays the Z6 is the image stabilisation (perhaps on the new Olympus better?) and the EVF is just a thing of loveliness.
      There are a few other nice features of the S1, loads in fact, but it’s just the handling, and again, it may purely come down to familiarity here.
      Oh, the price of those Panasonic lenses too... I think the Sigma EF-L Mount adapter is going to sell very well!

    • @Photogearnews
      @Photogearnews  5 років тому

      Yes... again please remember it is pre-production and the AF isn’t final. I was also very close which often means if the focus goes out it struggles a lot more than if the subject was, say, another metre further away.
      That said without phase detect AF I do think it will struggle with low light video. It’s certainly something I’ll be looking very closely at in a full test

    👍Good job on a pre-production model. Tough duty in Barcelona! Hope Panasonic rep wasn’t nearby when you did the “hold by extended screen” trick - do you know how to administer CPR? Love your “littered with buttons” comment 😁- too many all over the cam might be an issue, or at least take time to get used to. Interesting how focus locked on animal skin pillow. Focus testing (contrast only) on final model will be key. BTW, just curious, at the end of the day do you get together and compare notes with the other UA-cam reviewers on site - several cameos in vid.

      It was the European Panasonic rep that showed us it was safe to swing around my the screen! It’s not my standard modus operandi for camera testing, not sure what it proves other than don’t be worried about the odd knock.
      And yes, a lot of the US guys were at the event, which is unusual, as it is for us to be in the US. Sadly didn’t get time to talk everyone I would have liked, mainly as we are all so busy shooting then editing. Always have a chat with Mr Camera Labs Gordon Laing as I’ve known him for quite a few years now.

    The choice of L mount is smart. Leica has already enough exceptional L mount lenses that are fully compatible with the Panasonic S1 and S1R.
    So the Panasonic is one step forward than Nikon Z cameras and Canon EOS R camera in the area of lenses.
    Of course Leica lenses are always very expensive. But you get what you pay. Also Panasonic was even smarter with the double memory card slots.
    Two serious steps forward than its recent Canon and Nikon rivals.
    What Panasonic offers with the double slots and the number of fully compatible lenses will be available by Canon and Nikon after two or three years.
    Panasonic S1 and S1R are the best choice for those who don't like the Sony full frame mirrorless cameras.
    The leica SL is full frame mirrorless too but is very very expensive, 5.500$ instead of Panasonic 2.500$ or 3.500$. Of course Panasonic cheaper full frame L mount lenses will be fully compatible with Leica SL and TL cameras too and that is nice for Leica lovers.

    • @Photogearnews
      @Photogearnews  5 років тому

      It’s a very smart move from all three companies. Each brings something different and it enables Panasonic (and Leica) to get a range of lenses very quickly. I think Leica will be pleased as they may sell more cameras with more (affordable) variety in the lens options.
      But the dark horse is Sigma. Traditionally it’s cameras haven’t sold - it was almost more of a concept based on the Foveon sensor. But the sensor is actually very good at low sensitivities for detail and colour. Now they could make a Foveon L mount camera (which they are planning) and there will be plenty of lenses available and an existing mount user base. All of a sudden it becomes an interesting landscape camera or a second body.
      Sigma are also working on an EF to L mount adapter.
      It is certainly going to offer some competition to Sony, Canon and Nikon... and is far from good news for Olympus and Pentax

    • @AgnostosGnostos
      @AgnostosGnostos 5 років тому +2

      Photogearnews Thank you for the reply. I appreciate your opinion.
      I used to take photos with an α mount Sony camera. Sigma was introducing very few α mount versions of its lenses. That made my unhappy. However nearly all Sigma lenses are sold with SA-mount. Sigma will soon replace SA-mount with L mount. Sigma creates great lenses with good prices and native L mount lenses by Sigma will be very popular by owners of Panasonic and Leica cameras.
      If Sigma starts to convert most of its existing lenses to L mount, Panasonic and Leica will have a very serious advantage.
      My opinion is that lenses are more important than cameras.

    • @wilbuzllf5057
      @wilbuzllf5057 5 років тому

      @@Photogearnews The dark horse is indeed Sigma. While I don't see a necessity in them releasing an L-mount camera, I do see it as a neciessity that they release a lens roadmap and do it soon. My bet is they have paired with Sigma moslty in order to get a lot of lenses out quick, a a resonable price. They should be fully aware of the fact that quite few people will spring for the Leica lenses, specially not in the start where the system, and alliance as a whole is more vulnerable and people are holding back. Panasonic will release 10 lenses by the end of 2020 and Sigma has said some 11-14 to come in 2019 but we have no idea which ones. They need to seriously release this information. I have an S1 on pre-order but if Sigma keeps their information locked down this might impact the decission to actually get the camera or not. Will they, for example, release the 500mm F4 sports? If not, the system will lack a super telephoto until Panasonic releases their Super telephoto in 2020 (as per the roadmap) and that Panasonic lens will most likley cost like a car.

      Photogearnews I’m a bit concerned for Pentax as I shoot primarily with their K1 and K3 cameras. Their lack of innovation might prove to be their downfall. I hear there’s a new camera due to be released very soon - I’m patiently waiting but if it’s anything less than great for video (video auto focus, 4K etc) I’ll be leaving Pentax for good. The X-h1and this Panasonic both look really appealing to me.

    • @Photogearnews
      @Photogearnews  5 років тому

      It’s a real shame for Pentax users. I, like many, owned a K1000 when I was learning photography and they have such a history. I’d guess that there are more K-Mount lenses kicking around than any other and the frustrating thing is that the cameras are actually pretty good.
      In the early DSLR days they had some really nice cameras. I remember thinking that you had to work to get images as the evaluative metering was never that good, but having sensor stabilisation was a real advantage over Canon and Nikon.
      They struggled to move early on when everything shifted to mirrorless. They lost Samsung as a partner when the latter released its NX mirrorless cameras. The answer that Pentax had was the Pentax Q which was a terrible concept (did well initially Japan apparently, but amongst consumers not enthusiast photographers), and then there was the K-01.
      I liked the K-01 as a concept - but the design was terrible. It would have been a great bridge between DSLR and mirrorless, getting photographers used to the idea but without sacrificing the huge range of legacy glass for the mount.
      Those cameras and the resources and money that went in to them no doubt had a knock on effect on their DSLR range. Through in changes of ownership to Hoya then to Ricoh and new people come in with their own thoughts and ideas.
      I fear they will be the next iconic brand to disappear from the photo space, which would be incredibly sad ☹️
