    🐝 How to Render Tallow Directions:
    First you want to either ask to have the fat ground, or cut it into small pieces yourself. Once the fat is all cut up, put it into a crockpot, put the lid on, and turn it on low. Depending on your size of fat chunks, it can take anywhere from 6 - 24 hours. Once it is no longer popping and crackling, turn off the heat and let it cool a bit. Strain the tallow through a mesh strainer, and if you want it very finely strained, add a piece of organic cotton muslin. Pour the strained tallow into glass jars and let it cool. It will keep at cool room temperature for several months, if not longer. If you plan on eating it, I recommend storing it in the refrigerator, although it is fine to keep it at room temperature for a limited amount of time for food purposes as well. That's it! Now you have beautiful, golden, nutrient-dense tallow for all of your skincare and cooking needs!

    I think it's best to get it away from heat asap. It would be less yellow. I saw you left it overnight. What I do, is, as soon as my dip spoon can fill up, I start taking out the tallow. Get all the tallow out that you can as soon as you can. This speeds up the process significantly because the remaining chunks melt down just as fast as when you first put it in because there is less liquid. I was able to render most of my 5 lbs in less than 4 hours. It came out just a little yellow and dried snow white.

    Here are a few good uses of beef tallow. If you have enough tallow for pan frying in a cast iron skillet, you can literally fry ground beef hamburger patties, and the meat cooks evenly without drying out, at the right temperature of course. Dyer's Hamburgers in Tennessee makes their famous burgers like this. Don't forget to cook up some fries while you're at it. Onion fritters (hash brown like) fried in beef tallow are great. There is a video here on UA-cam on how to make onion fritters, but use beef tallow for the frying process. Fried meat pies or fried apple pies are very good in beef tallow.

    Hi! Huge fan of your videos, thank you! I'm wondering, using this dry method of rendering do you add salt to draw out impurities in the Suet the same way you would do in the wet method?

    • @BumblebeeApothecary
      @BumblebeeApothecary  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you so much! Great question. With this dry method you don't use salt or water. It's a quicker method with less steps, and produces tallow that is usually a bit darker and has a stronger smell. It's good for cooking, but I prefer the wet method with purification steps for skincare, soap, etc. :)

      You're welcome! If it was grass fed beef, it's normal for it to be a bit yellow instead of pure white. Different breeds of cattle have different colors of fat, too. For example, Guernseys have very yellow fat. It sounds like you're doing it right!

    I did this with the wet method bc I want to make tallow balm. I think I either let it go too long or my water cooked off. So it is the dark brown color like this vs the yellow color. Can I still render again to use for tallow balm or is it better for cooking and start fresh with new tallow for balm?

    • @BumblebeeApothecary
      @BumblebeeApothecary  3 роки тому

      If it got darker, it did probably get too hot, and that happens if the water evaporates. This batch might have a smell to it, so I would probably use it for cooking, and try again with another batch for balm. I do have another video on rendering and purifying with the wet method that works great for balm: ua-cam.com/video/M4UiZe4mjmg/v-deo.html Hope that helps!

    do you find it saves money rendering your own tallow at home rather than buying some already made from a local farm? I found a grass-fed farm that sells a quart (32oz) for $8.50 and I'm just debating how much I could save making it on my own. Thanks!

    • @BumblebeeApothecary
      @BumblebeeApothecary  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, I think it does save money! I find beef fat (organic, 100% grass fed) for $2 to $3/lb. If I render around 7 lb. of fat, I get about 4 quarts of tallow. If you can get fat even cheaper, you save more money yet 😊 But $8.50 is not bad! If you’re very short on time, that may be the way to go 😊

  • @H2Dwoat
    @H2Dwoat 3 роки тому +1

    Hi, I was watching another video recently where they used a mincer/grinder to get the fat to a manageable size. I think they put the fat in the freezer initially to help with the grinding.
    Could you tell me how many ours in total it took to render? Also how much tallow you ended up with and how much fat you started with? Have you done something similar with pig fat to get lard?
    Can I ask how you clean the cloth I would be worried about soap contaminating and future liquid filtered through the cloth.
    Another great video 👍. I love seeing these types of video and I am learning so much.

    • @BumblebeeApothecary
      @BumblebeeApothecary  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you so much! Yes, grinding is my favorite way to get fat small enough for rendering. And cold fat definitely cuts/grinds easier. This is one of my first videos, and I have a more updated video here: ua-cam.com/video/M4UiZe4mjmg/v-deo.html
      The time to render depends on the size of beef fat chunks, and the amount of fat. I usually let it go for 12 hours with the wet rendering method that I linked above. One large crock pot full of beef fat usually yield around 3-4 quarts of tallow. Yes, you can do the same thing with pork fat for lard. I just wash the cloth with a natural soap and rinse it very well, then let it air dry.

    What part of the cow is used eg, meat fat offcuts or is it the inner cavity fat only? Also, after you make the balm, how long is it's shelf life at room temperature? Many thanks for the video.

    • @BumblebeeApothecary
      @BumblebeeApothecary  5 років тому +5

      Hello! You’re very welcome! You can potentially render any fat from anywhere in the animal, but fat from the inner cavity around the organs, especially around the kidneys (called leaf fat) is the very best. Properly rendered tallow will last about 6 months at room temperature, as long as it is stored in a cool, dark location 😊

    • @sean3836
      @sean3836 4 роки тому +4

      Fat around the kidney and loins of beef and mutton is typically much harder and it's called suet - which is very dense in vitamins and minerals. Was very popular in cooking in England before the advent of vegetable based substitutes, e.g., Christmas pudding. You can typically find suet at a butcher, or at least request it when they have beef come in next - and it's typically quite inexpensive - mostly due to us modern people having no idea how or what to do with it. Thankfully we're seeing the revival of these historic techniques.

    • @arnieslab
      @arnieslab 4 роки тому +1

      Sean I’m a butcher and almost everybody that buys suet buys it to make bird feed during the winter. When summer comes we can hardly give it away lol. If people only knew!

    Thank you for the tutorial! I tried rendering for the first time yesterday and am unsure of if it’s good or not. I put the fat in my crockpot on low at about 10pm and the following morning around 7am I checked on it. It was not sizzling and the “crackling” was a golden mass in the center. After removing that I let it cool for a few hours then strained it through the colander lined with cheesecloth. It smells like the crackling though and has a meatier taste than the one I’ve gotten before from Fatworks. Is it good or did I burn it and do I have to toss it? Please advise. Thanks 💛

      There are a few things that influence that color of finished tallow. Fat from grass fed cows tends to be a little bit more yellow than grain fed cattle. I have another video that I’m going to do very soon where I go through the steps for purification. Basically, using the wet method to render is the best way to eliminate the beef smell, and then there are ways to purify it naturally as well. Whatever method you use, it will have less of a beef smell if you’re careful to not let it get too hot while rendering. 😊

      Regular cotton has been grown with a lot of pesticides and isn't organic.

    I have used your wet method about six times now. No matter how many times I purify it I cannot get the smell out. Not sure what I'm doing wrong to still have that fat beef smell.

      Sorry to hear about the beef smell! If the water evaporates too much the tallow can burn, which can make it have a smell. Some people also do a purifying step with baking soda to help remove the smell. The quality of beef fat makes a difference, too. Leaf fat is easier to get odorless, while trim fat will tend to have more smell.

      Thank you for replying back. It is a mix fat. The farm here doesn't sell just leaf fat. I do keep tons of salt water in it. Looking through your notes I might be cooking it to high. (Not sure). Do you think I can take the tallow I've already purified and redo it with the baking soda?
      Thanks again,
      God Bless

    Ohhhhhh, I cut them into medium size pieces. No wonder it's taking a while. Haha.

      @BumblebeeApothecary  2 роки тому

      Yes, that will take longer :) The smaller the pieces the fast it goes, and the more tallow you get.

      It depends how much tallow you're rendering, and how big or small the pieces are. Usually mine is done in around 12 hours. You just have to keep an eye on it :)

    Um im sorry but i thought cooking the fat was rendering i always thought tallow was boiled

    • @BumblebeeApothecary
      @BumblebeeApothecary  4 роки тому +1

      Yes, you could say rendering is cooking. It is basically melting the fat down. And the wet rendering method could be called boiling.
