What an informative and articulate presentation. I have recently, from Thailand where I live, been watching a ton of videos helping my nephew in Iowa. select 2 rifles. For deer we agreed on a 270 Winchester, Tikka TXL3. He is currently in Texas hunting hogs and we, or I, chose a post 64 Model 70 Winchester in 30-06 as the best all around caliber for all but the largest animals. I encouraged him to stay away from magnum calibers for recoil, barrel erosion and ammo availability. He is a sophmore in HS and we collaborated on the video reviews we watched leaving him to make the caliber decisions. Could we have done better, maybe but he shot a deer just days after the 270 was delivered and I will be waiting for the results of the hog hunt using both rifles. Being out of the shooting game here, my wife as citizen can own 22LR rifles so I'm long out of following the latest in new calibers and rifle models but he and I are satisfied with the rifles he has now.

      Awesome! I have a Model 70 in 270 and I love it. I don't own a 30-06 but they are a fantastic option.

Please rethink the Ruger safety noise.
It could be a deadly mistake.

One trick is ride the bolt down while holding the trigger back on an EMPTY chamber. The bolt is unlikely to get pulled open by brush. The XPR stock is much stiffer than the Ruger. Harder to find scope bases for the XPR.

Great trick, but usually if I'm spot and stock I have one in the chamber ready to go. I agree the XPR stock is a bit better, if you look at our other videos I replaced the stock on all my Ruger American rifles.

The Ruger American Savage Axis and the Winchester XPR are great rifles if you can find them for under $500. The Howa 1500 is a far superior rifle than all three and can be had with a scope for $600. If you're willing to spend $800, you can step into a savage 110 Hunter with the acu stock which is amazing. The Weatherby Vanguard can also be had for about $800 as well.

All great points. After shooting I lean towards the Rugers. Just availability and the metal to metal bedding puts it ahead for me. Sure it is still a budget friendly but gets the job done.

Ruger is a great priced rifle, accurate in 350 L, my problem was that magazine digging in my back on those long hunts
Xpr is a better gun, more $ but worth it, Best-Regards

Thanks for the insight, yes the longer mags on traditional rifles on your back sucks. Did you try a 3 point on the front, or front sling it, there are also some rapid deployment bags too. Thanks for the comment!

@@scruffyarms No just swivels , hunted with one for 2 seasons, zero issues, liked the Hornady 170s the best,it was a shooter out to 200 yrds

I saw all the reviews, Ruger seem more accurate, example 6.5 creedmoor.

I own both rifles a Winchester XPR 300 win mag and a Ruger American 308 . Both are tac drivers and have taken several elk and whitetail bucks with them . I paid $330 for the XPR after rebate and $320 for the Ruger American on sale . Both rifle are a very good value for a budget rifle . Not impressed with the current mark prices though .

I prefer the one more accurate. Other not important.

Absolutely! Both shoot 1 MOA or better with factory ammo. As with any firearm you need to be at the range to practice, but both of them were able to do sub MOA with factory ammo.

Those are great rifles too! Around here those go for almost 1K. They are are nice, this was to just compare these two. I haven't seen any comparing them. This is a great comparison between the entry level for Ruger and entry level for Winchester. As funds allow, or need arises I may do other comparisons on other brands entry levels.
