  • In this video I compare the Winchester XPR to the Pre-64 Model 70, the Post 64 Model 70, and the Browning X Bolt. Join me to learn about their differences and have a good look at the inner workings of these great rifles. I think the Winchester XPR is one of the best budget rifles around. Another excellent video, very informative. I click on your videos just as soon as I see them. I had a 1951 vintage Model 70, it was in 30-06 and was somewhat modified, barrel shortened to make it into a "scout" rifle. Wish I still had it, they are not easy to find in the shops around me, in fact I can't recall the last time I saw one. There was a Model 54 in a shop a few years ago, the precursor to the Model 70.
If I might offer a suggestion, the details if the rifles do not show up well in front of your black sweater. And, along those lines, the contrast of dark firearms against white backgrounds is often to much for cameras to deal with, they stop down the apertures to deal with the bright white, which means that dark firearms are rendered more as silhouettes.
Edit: I have since found an excellent 1950 vintage Model 70 in 30-06. A standard grade, all as original, one of my bucket list firearms.

Hi Rupert - truly one of the best and such a nuisance living in the shadow of the pre-64; the post 64 stamped with another makers name would have been an instant best seller. People just made that pre/post comparison thing into a major issue - when there was no issue at all. I'm looking for a post 64 .458 from about 65-70. Hope I find one. All the best.

Thanks for taking a look at the XPR. Since I already bought mine, it's good to know it was a good choice from the pool of entry-level hunting rifles on the market these days. My only "gripe" (of sorts) is the 24" barrel... a bit unwieldy in a stand. Otherwise it gets the job done. I'm feeding my coffee can for an eventual upgrade to a Model 70... but that's a few deer seasons down the road. Thanks again... always learn something watching your work. I watch all your videos and enjoy them. I just finished this one. After watching, I will often grab one of my rifles or search for images with google to get a “closer” look at all the different parts. Sometimes the close up images are easily found, sometimes not. You may want to see if your cameraman or editor can insert specific closeup photos of parts difficult to capture during the presentation. Just an idea. I’ve seen this in other videos and it allows the viewers to pause and study a bit. By the way, my post 64, 22-250 is hands down my most accurate, unmodified, factory rifle. I have customs that are as good or better, but no factory rifle.

Please don’t fear that you “talk too much.” Your patient explanations are why we are here.
Regarding safeties, I like the idea of being able to unload a rifle while keeping the safety engaged unless there is a removable box magazine. I understand your point about not trusting a mechanical safety. I love revolvers, none of which have safeties. However, I carry a 1911 in Condition 1 and would not do so without the thumb safety engaged. The most important practice is keeping my finger (or anything else) outside the trigger guard until I am ready to pull the trigger, but the thumb safety is a comforting backup. With a bolt action rifle I prefer having a manual safety in addition to what is between my ears.

I’m curious how this rifle compares to a walnut Remington 783 or a Thompson Centre Venture 2, or the new CVA Cascade? I bought a Bergara B14 after your excellent review, now if Minnesota changes their deer hunting laws to let us use straight wall rifle cartridges, I just might end up with a 350 Legend. My father loved his Post-64 Model 70 in .270 Winchester, but always said he wanted a Pre-64. Before he passed away, he bought another Post-64 Model 70 in .30-06. The major difference other than the caliber being the grade of the two. The one in .270 Winchester is what is now called Supergrade, while the one in .30-06 is labeled as a "670A", the budget blind magazine variant. The quality on both is stellar, and I have plans to put the .30-06 into a more target oriented guise than the sporter configuration that it currently is.

    • @UnitedStatesOfGuns
      @UnitedStatesOfGuns  4 роки тому +3

Hi Markius - They're all great - I like the 670A for its simplicity; best of luck with your target rifle plan. Sometimes I get lazy and my target rifle building plans turn into a high magnification scope only - surprising how far one can hit and how small the groups get - with just the scope.

The current Winchester Model 70's are made in Portugal and are excellent. The post 64 Winchester was the rifle that I cut my teeth on from 18 through to my late 20's in 22/250 and .270. I never had a double stroke or jam in either rifle and both were pin point accurate (admittedly they were both bedded and floated). It looks like the Xbolt has a bigger extractor than the XPR so that's a plus but I think the its more expensive. The post 64 M70 as you said has the recoil lug built into the receiver plus the three position M70 safety that locks the bolt and the striker is a much better option over the Rem700.

  • @trapdoorspringfieldmodel1888

That XPR bolt with its design reminds me of the Weatherby Mark V. By having the bolt diameter the same as the lugs it allows for a relatively smooth action, but at the same time eliminates the machining necessary to make a skinnier bolt. This is a cheap solution, but it works.
While it is sad that the Model 70 isn’t made in New Haven it is more important that it is still being made as a high quality firearm. People need to remember that the entire Model 70 line was actually discontinued when the New Haven facility closed. So when people want to be bent out of shape about it being made in Portugal the choice can easily be not made at all. For example a person can buy today a brand new Model 70, but they can’t buy a brand new Winchester Model 9422.
The post-64 push-feed action did have some teething issues, but once Winchester worked the kinks out it was a solid and smooth action. It is an underrated action in my opinion and they did turn out some beautiful guns with it. As to what might be next up in the collectability area of the Model 70 I suspect that it’s going to be the New Haven made Model 70’s with the “classic” control-feed action. These guns have the original Model 70 trigger, have the New Haven stamping, and are to the best of my knowledge the closest one can get in the Model 70 line to a pre-64 without it being an actual pre-64.
Anyhow, I just want to say that I enjoyed the video.

SACRILEGE!!!!! The XPR replacing the model 70. I know it could happen. These young pups, all they want is "tactical" or "target" anymore. Few appreciate the classic beauty, lines and quality of an older style hunting rifle. I own pre, post, and present model 70's and also the XPR. The XPR is a fine rifle, decent action, good barrel, in lengths more appropriate to particular calibers. (At least in my opinion) and the best thing, they put the MOA trigger in it!! 👍👍 the stock looks decent, feels pretty good, but not like the model 70 in my opinion, but the thing I'm not so excited about, is the removeable magazine. Give me the standard magazine with opening bottom metal or at least the hidden magazine. Just open the bolt, top load, more capacity and reliable. I guess three rounds will get the job done, and the XPR cycles and feeds well enough but I don't care for having to pull the magazine to load it, and a removeable magazine is a pain if it happens to get lost. Removeable magazines are fine on AR's etc, with big capacity magazines but I don't care much for them on hunting rifles. My Savage 99C's, with their removeable magazines, were fine, but they had capacity and could be easily top loaded just by opening the lever. To me, the XPR is a fine rifle and I like mine, but it isn't a model 70 in my opinion. Hopefully the XPR does well in the Winchester line and the model 70 stays popular too, at least for my time here. But then I guess such things aren't up to me.

My experience with the Xbolt was very much hit or miss. Broken extractor. Stripped scope mounting screws (even using a torque driver) and in the case of the .300Win mag great accuracy at 100 yards which just fell apart at 200 with no consistency in the groups. Also I found no way to disassemble the bolt to clean. I have wondered about the XPR. Glad to see your review. I agree the pre and post 64 Model 70 triggers were a masterpiece of simplicity and reliability. Surprised to see a thumbs down. You must have hurt someones feelings who didn’t have any retort to offer.

XPR is best rifle for the money, followed by Thompson.

The Winchester M70 currently has controlled round feeding. I wouldn't buy a M70 that didn't have controlled round feeding.

I wished most were as you. That would leave more post 64s for me! Great guns, never had an issue with a push feed.
