When we went to visit family or just go in for a weekend get away it was an awesome place to stay. Prior to 2020 you could get a carafe of coffee or tea and a small plate of cookies free of charge anytime of the day, but you had to be a registered guest. Another privlege they have done away with was the half price discount you would get as a guest for their Grand Sunday Buffet. It was so huge it took up all of the lobby and at least one other room. It was a great luxury to stay there back then and I always looked forward to it. Having visited many times we stay on the second floor once, not the haunted room, but down the hall. PS I'm really not interested in Railway hotels. The only other one I was ever inside of was the Banff Springs and it was a dump. (I think it even smelled musty.) And, if I'm not mistaken, they had an indoor salt spring pool that was REALLY ancient.

Very interesting and informative - thanks! PS when I was in University, in the 1950s. I worked as a CPR porter, in the summer. Prior to that, I frequented the Royal Alec's steam bath, at a few bachelor parties.
I'm jealous! What was it like? Do you have any photos of the alexandra? Thank you so much for watching! You should check out my other episodes on the other railway hotels, youll love them! especially the hotel macdonald in edmonton
@@trav4oilers No photos; but you have several views of the hotel on your video, no? It was nothing special; red brick rectangle. As for the steam room, it was....a steam room. I had lunch at the Fort Garry, once, long after its heyday, but that was it. I was practicing law and it's just a few blocks from the Law Courts Bldg, Land Titles Office, etc.
PS I'm really not interested in Railway hotels. The only other one I was ever inside of was the Banff Springs and it was a dump. (I think it even smelled musty.) And, if I'm not mistaken, they had an indoor salt spring pool that was REALLY ancient.
@@wmarantz yes but not much of it inside. I did an episode on the banff springs. I'd be curious what you tHink of it! I'd love to see those steam baths!
I don't personally believe in ghosts but I'm sure I would enjoy a night at Fort Gary Hotel regardless. Thanks for sharing your experience as always Trav ! I also never took the canadian train to answer your question. It is on my list for sure !
You gotta take it at some point brother. Where are you located?
What happened to the tunnel? It must be still there, unless it was filled in when Main St/Broadway were expanded.
I'm not sure but It has to be there still! Have you had a chance to watch the rest of my railway hotel series? I'm working on new episodes as we speak :) thanks for watching!
Great video, thanks so much for the great footage - but 3rd largest city in Canada rather than North America in 1910 :)
Hey Cath, you're correct :) thank you so much for the kind words. I'm glad you loved it. The Fort Garry is one stop in my series across Canada. I'd love to hear what you think of the others including the Bessborough in Saskatoon. Chat soon :)
You forgot to mention that the Hudson bay passenger run leaves Winnipeg once a week to Churchill. Before it used to leave 3 times a week.
Very very true, but thats more "mandatory" service they have to provide vs a real experience. Although I guess you could stay at the Fort Garry and then head north!
i’ve lived here 21 years (my whole life) and i’ve yet to stay at the fort garry. i would stay at the haunted room
It's usually pretty fully booked! Have you had a chance to check out the other episodes in my railway hotel series? I'd love to hear what you think :)
@@trav4oilers i’ll check em out.
@@27twang excited to hear what you think :)
I seem to remember theres no 13th level? Or am I remembering wrong?
I believe the 13th floor is management offices now. Hope you loved the video :)
Amazing. I worked there for 9 years!
Amazing! What did you do at the FG? Did anything bring back good memories?
@trav4oilers I was the front desk supervisor, great experience, met lots of movie stars and political figures. Left during the pandemic, which was a surreal nightmare. Things got bad. Love your rail hotel series. Those hotels are gems.
@@Marcos-f7d Do you have a favourite episode so far?
Guest of the hotel have access to the pool , hot tub and sauna shared with the joined apartments (Fort Gary PLace)
that's frustrating, you'd think they could get their own hot tub and pool :( you should check out the rest of the series :)
@@trav4oilers- Assiniboine Fitness is connected as easily as many other hotels I’ve used the gym at, and it is a great gym! Friendly staff, lots of equipment (it’s a little older but it is well maintained) and usually you will have the pool, sauna and whirlpool to yourself. We usually take a staycation at the Ft. Garry once per year, enjoying their Easter or other brunch.
Great video, but you were talking way too quickly a lot of the time. Loved the content!
My husband worked for VIA, we went on so many trips on the train!
That's amazing. Did you ever go Winnipeg to Banff? I try to keep he videos fast so you have to rewind and it helps with the algorithm, but thank you for letting me know :)
There was no tunnel, to the Fort Garry Hotel according to city records, and never was.
FG says otherwise! Have you had a chance to watch the rest of my railway hotel series? I'm working on new episodes as we speak :) thanks for watching!
Canadian beef is always superior to USA beef.
Alberta beef, we love it. Thanks for watching man :)
Didn't know guy who built fort Garry sank with the titanic 😮
He was an icon, theres a bit of a conspiracy theory as to why he passes but I'm gonna do an updated video on the FG soon! Have you had a chance to watch the rest of my railway hotel series? I'm working on new episodes as we speak :) thanks for watching!
Why was the copper roof "infamous"?
I made a mistake in the edit and caught it after I deleted some of the main files and couldn't re-record it so it stuck. No infamous history of the roof I'm aware. Thanks for watching :)
Edits are way to fast. It is really hard to appreciate the views if they last literally 0.25 of a second or are 1 second of constant panning.
Hey thanks for the feedback. The Banff springs episode was a bit slower. thank you so much for the kind words. I'm glad you loved it. The Fort Garry is one stop in my series across Canada. I'd love to hear what you think of the others including the Bessborough in Saskatoon. Chat soon :)
1-”You know what I smell, Jimmy?”
2-”Victorious truth rising above the ashes of superstition?”
1-”No. Salami.”
not you mentioning selkirk (i’m born and raised here)
Had to mention selkirk! Have you had a chance to watch the rest of my railway hotel series? I'm working on new episodes as we speak :) thanks for watching!
Did I hear no air conditioning. Was it not working. Because I don't have air conditioning so last thing I want is hotel with no air conditioning.
Only hot or not hot. Downside of a 110 year old building but Pretty dissapointing but the hotel is trying to be cost affective so makes sense. Hope you enjoyed this one and check out the rest of the series at the other hotels
Great video but Winnipeg was never the 3rd largest city in North America…
I remember reading about that at one point, might be 3rd biggest in canada but Have you had a chance to check out the other episodes in my railway hotel series? I'd love to hear what you think :)
My birthplace also 🙏
my dad works there!!
thats amazing, what does he do there? Did you see the other episodes in my series on the grand railway hotels? It's all about the railway history of canada and cities it built just like this one, I'd love to hear what you think )
@@trav4oilers He works the director of sales, and i havent seen them but ill watch them soon
I lived in Winnipeg from 1983 to 1988. I've been to the Hotel Fort Garry's lounge on a number of occasions, but I've never stayed there or eaten there. It's a goal of mine to stay in all the grand railway hotels in Canada. So far we've stayed at The Hotel Macdonald (Edmonton), The Banff Springs, Château Lake Louise, The Frontenac (Old Quebec), and The Queen Elizabeth (Montréal). I have a ways to go. This is an excellent series!!
I'm jealous, the frontenac and QE is def on my to stay list. thanks again for watching the series. Do you have a favourite video to date?
No more hockey?
@@NolanChamberlain-w5p hockey content returns in September.railway series for July and August :)
I see that hotel
haunted Hotel... did you ask for the haunted room?? dont see any mention of it in your video... Well known Haunted room
I briefly touched on room 202 towards the end but nope I did not stay in it. Thanks for watching though, you should check out my other railway hotel videos in the series :)
You didn't stay in the haunted room?? 🤣🤣🤣
Yeeeeeee
heeyyy
"Infamous" is not the word you want. Just use "famous". Infamous means famous for negative reasons (for example, Stalin and Hitler were "infamous" but Dominic Hasek is "famous")
Thank you Bonzie! Have you been following the series?
You talk too fast and everything flips so fast you can’t get a good look at anything. 👎🏻
I'll be slowing the edits down in the futrue! Have you had a chance to watch the rest of my railway hotel series? I'm working on new episodes as we speak :) thanks for watching!
