So funny: 'Everyone looks like Henry Cavill!'. Especially, when Albert IS played by Henry Cavill (btw, his first casting). And earlier at the beginning of the movie 'Edmond looks like Henry Cavill!'. So it was the perfect casting of Henry Cavill as son!
"Mercedes? Like the Car?!?" LOL! Actually the other way round is true: The cars once were named after Mercedes Jellinek, the daughter of their chief importer to Austro-Hungary, Emil Jellinek 🙂
Why didn't Dumas make an Edmond and Mercedes ending together? Alexandre Dumas read Homer (Dumas A., Mes Mémoires, Paris, Bouquins, 2003, p. 590)) and The Odyssey influenced the book The Count of Monte Cristo. In Book IV of The Odyssey, Telemachus visits Menelaus who won Helen back after his elopement with Paris. Helen was sorry for what she did, but still Menelaus needed to use drugs to forget his painful memories like Helen's union with Paris. This influenced Alexandre Dumas. Edmond would never be happy with Mercedes and would never forget her marriage to Fernand. This would always make him have painful memories. Their marriage would be deeply unhappy. Haydee does not bring the count the painful memories that Mercedes does. More realistic for him to be happy with Haydée.
Everyone was told that Edmond was dead. It had also been 16 years since they last saw him. Some people forget others' faces. Especially when they are told they are dead. Mercedes loved Edmond so much that she couldn't forget him.
But in the book Edmond never forgave Mercedes for marrying Fernand. ONLY IN A HOLLYWOOD MOVIE WOULD A MAN BE HAPPY FOR HIS EX. BRIDE HAVING SEX WITH HER WORST ENEMY. The film The Prisoner of Château d'If shows Edmond's anger at the fact that Mercedes married Fernand
You make a perfect point. Had Edmond been known to be alive because of the way the brain works, they would have recognized him. Believing he's dead, the brain would just tell you he looks like someone you knew.
"Quite liberating isn’t it ?" I’ll liberate you. I’ll liberate you from life. Lesson #1: Don’t cheat on Biss. "He wants to drive the car." 28:31 That is Luis Guzman. One of the most recent things you may have seen him in is the show Wednesday on Netflix. He played Gomez Addams. Wednesday's father. But he's been in a lot of other things too.
wow, you are actually really good at this. I have seen a lot of reaction channels watch this movie (I'm mostly rage watching because I despise this movie.) But you noticed all these little details that I never did and added to it in a way no other reaction video has. So I'm subbed now!
Bisscute is always so surprised at the name Mercedes for a girl instead of a car. But the car was actually named after the founders daughter Mercedes Jellinek
I like this retelling of the story. IMO, this is one of the great tales in literature that should never be forgotten. If you are a book reader, read this book, plus of course the The Musketeers books by the same author (Dumas). Speaking of which, I have a fondness for "The Three Musketeers" and "The Four Musketeers" movies, done in the 70s. Classics!
The book is great, but this movie is terrible. Very narcissistic on the part of the screenwriter to believe in changing the story completely. especially thinking about a man reconciling with his ex-fiancée who married the man who ruined his life. The woman had to be very narcissistic to believe that a man would accept a new beginning after she had sex with her enemy. On June 28th, the French adaptation with Pierre Niney opens in cinemas.
@@Βυβλίς There's nearly always a difference between book and movie, and you know Hollywood has to stick Hollywood things in there. We're just lucky there wasn't a musical dance scene, pie fight, and fourth wall breaking (though I do like "Blazing Saddles").
They don't do the best of jobs in portraying it in the film. But I believe the book mentions his years of suffering in prison left Edmond significantly altered in appearance. Allowing him to better hide his true identity from those he once knew. Another great film adaptation of a classic piece of literature is The Time Machine. I think you'd enjoy that one as well.. 😊
With so many adaptations doing it completely wrong in the past 10 years, this is an example of a good film adaptation. Changed a lot while remaining true to a lot of the plot points and the overall message of the story. I do agree with your small criticism of the lack of accents, and I like your accent a lot, coincidentally
The film is mediocre and poorly written. Even an artificial intelligence could write a better script than Jay Wolpert. Alexandre Dumas read Homer (Dumas A., Mes Mémoires, Paris, Bouquins, 2003, p. 590) and The Odyssey influenced the story. The count of Monte Chrysot works with the premise of how Ulysses would act if Penelope had gotten married to one of the pretndenes. He would never take her back and would marry Princess Nausicaa who is personified by Haydee. Not even the existence of Telemachus would prevent Ulysses from repudiating if Penelope married one of the suitors. Fortunately, in 2024 we will have a miniseries with Sam Claflin.
I do wish for a more faithful adaptation of the book. Though trying to sell edmund riding off onto the sunset with a 14 year old girl might be a hard sell to most current audiences.
Pretty okay reaction to an awesome movie. As a friendly FYI, although this movie was based on the 1830s novel by black French author Alexander Dumas, this adaptation was made for American audiences which is why the filmmakers decided not to go heavy with French accents. That decision was the director's choice. The author is the same one who also wrote "The Three Musketeers" and "The Man In The Iron Mask" in the 1830s. Also, the name 'Mercedes' was a common name in Europe long before cars were invented. Btw, just 2 years later in 2004, the same actor (Jim Caviezel) who played the role of Edmund Dantes/The Count of Monte Cristo, also played the role of Jesus in the Mel Gibson movie "The Passion of The Christ"....a movie where he was also beaten and tortured. There have been many Hollywood movie adaptations of the novel "The Count of Monte Cristo", at least since the 1930s. This 2002 version is one of my favs. But another adaptation of the "TCOMC" that I still love and occasionally binge-watch, is the modern TV adaptation from ABC Network called "Revenge", which aired for 4 seasons from 2011 to 2015. It was based on the present era, with most of the storyline centered in the Hamptons, Long Island (NY). GREAT TV series..."Revenge". Also, I'm not sure if you realized it...but the young actor who played the role of his 16-year old son, 'Albert', is actually actor Henry Cavill who went on to play Clark Kent/Superman in the DC Universe movies over 10 years later ('Man of Steel", 'Batman vs Superman", 'Justice League').
The book is fantastic and a must read if you enjoyed this. The movie deviates quite a bit from the book and there are quite a few details in the movie that bother me but it's still entertaining to watch.
The ending was the film's biggest mistake. Haydee does not bring the count the painful memories that Mercedes does. More realistic for him to be happy with Haydée. Filming of the French adaptation has already finished with Pierre Niney as the Count and Anamaria Vartolomei as Haydee. The film hits theaters in 2024.
You have the German car thing wrong. Daimler’s daughter was named Mercedes there for the car was later. The book is a classic and so is the author. It was written when books were top caliber and it goes on for hundreds and hundreds of pages. Reading it was a big and wonderful experience. The book end quite differently from the film, too.
I love this movie. I really love "Revenge" stories. Not sure what that says about me. But there it is. I think it was even the first DVD I ever purchased.
26:52 It wasn't three months. He was with the smugglers for years in the novel. That's the biggest oversight in the movie. Not sure if it was a typo kind of mistake or a deliberate alteration of the book. Either way, it doesn't make sense when you add up the time he was in d'If and look at the age of his son.
And the gorgous rock formation is on Gozo, the small island right north of Malta. By the way, you mean she is named Mercedes like the car, that was named after the daughter of Herrn Benz!
Great film based on a classic of universal literature, thanks for this one Bisscute ❤❤the protagonist is Jim Caviezel who played Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson's film: The Passion (a recommendation for future reactions). Biss I also suggest you react to the latest movie starring Jim Caviezel called: Sound of Freedom is a good movie about a strong topic: human trafficking. I think you'll like it.😊
18:13 If you look closely, you will notice he accidentally blows out the candle, but a light still shines, probably from a hidden flashlight. Biss, "why does everybody look like Henry Cavill in this movie," and Henry Cavill plays a part in this movie. Also, about the accents...I don't think this movie would do very well at all if they had the actors trying to do fake accents.
I have watched several reactions to this, and am enjoying your take on it. You’re the first reactor I’ve seen that figured out Albert is Edmond’s son so very early, and just by spotting the resemblance. Now, some comments: The guard that shot at Edmond when he was riding away to flee, near the beginning, was not a bad shot. Flintlock guns have a delay between the pull of the trigger and the ignition of the main powder charge, so shooting a fast moving target is NOT easy. There are several reasons why it was so hard for his old associates to recognize Edmond. First, everyone thought he was dead, they would not ever expect to see him. He’s 16 years older. Yes, the facial hair is part of it, but a small part. Most importantly, all of his mannerisms are wildly different than when he was young, naive Edmond Dantes. His bearing, the set of his face, how he looks at people, how he talks, all different, all played to his role as the wildly rich Count of Monte Cristo.
Another, more accurate version of "The Count of Monte Cristo" is the 1998 miniseries version starring Gerard Depardieu... and it's in French, with subtitles. Much longer, much darker, but more accurate. And a great performance by Depardieu.
Dumas such an awesome writer... Count of Monte Christo, 3 Musketeers, and Man in the Iron Mask are all classics and his father was also an intriguing person as well from a slave to one of Frances greatest Generals.
The lady and the guy you thought were familiar faces are Helen McCrory and Luis Guzman. You might've knew them as Aunt Polly from Peaky Blinders and Gomez in Netflix's Wednesday.
Madalina - MAN IN THE IRON MASK (and) The THREE MUSKETEERS (and) MARK of ZORRO are other CLASSIC PERIOD stories (movies) you might enjoy, if you haven't already seen them. The Count of Monte Cristo was a great choice. Please do more such movies. THANKS !! (Dave Strong) --- Count of Monte Cristo (2002) with Jim Caviezel is the HAPPY reunion version for Mercedes and most of the fans of the story. The NOVEL (and other movie versions) has the Count of Monte Cristo separating from Mercedes at the end and instead lives his life with Haydee (the daughter of Ali Pasha) whom he rescued from slavery. It's assumed that Edmund and Haydee marry with a happy ending.
While this is an excellent movie, I highly recommend reading the book which is one of the best books ever written. Though don't read it thinking it will have the same Hollywood ending.
Aside from keeping the majority of names the same, this film has nothing in common with the book. Anyone that thinks The Count of Monte Cristo is a revenge story, has never read the book.
There's the 1988 adaptation that has Benedetto, Damglars' bankruptcy, Haydee testifying. The ending is Count and Haydee together. ua-cam.com/video/WTUvh5JdRwc/v-deo.html
Hey Biss, could you please react to Robert Rodriguez's "Once upon a time in Mexico" trilogy? It all starts with "El Mariachi" his first movie as a student made with 25000$. This movie showed the world what you could do with dedication, a few friends and family members and little money. Next in line is "Desperados" with Antonio Banderas. And last is "Once upon a time in Mexico" with Johnny Depp. Oh, it is not that the Woman in the movie was named after the car, but the car was named after a woman. In the early 1900's the general distributor for Daimler cars in france, who was also a race driver, wanted Daimler to build him a car with which he could win races. Daimler did and he did win a lot and so he named his car after his daughter, Mercedes.
Your wit, humor, timing, and empathy make you my favorite reactor. You are head and shoulders above the rest. This movie is a classic and yes.. Henry Cavill will make it to d movie soon enough 😊.
In book, Dumas was VERY clear that Edmond and Mercedes did not have sex. The author talks about how others their age did, but our hero was a good boy. Also, Fernand and Mercedes are cousins.
Dumas was a great admirer of Shakespeare and would never have done an Edmond and Mercedes ending. Just remember that Othello believed that Desdemona had an affair with Cassio and he killed her. Edmond would never be happy with Mercedes having sex with Fernand. The ending of the book is more realistic.
Great reaction as usual Biss😍...But still waiting for ya to watch some Westerns.... Tombstone, Young Guns, Magnificent 7, & 310 to Yuma are a few suggestions for ya...

Funnily enough I’ll be visiting Marseille in a couple of weeks, we’ll see how it goes 😄
We read this book in school, probably 6th 7th grade .
What a classic...
If I had a top 10 all-time favorite movies this one would definitely be in it
If you visit Marseille it will not look like this. Most of the movie was filmed in Malta and I have visited many of the locations there.
28:11 Luis Guzmán. Not so long ago, he even stayed in Romania while filming the series Wednesday (as Gomez Addams). 😉
Wow he’s so young ❤️
Nice thumbnail. You would make a great vampire Biss. 😅
I like this... As you see the friend getting ready to betray... Oh, oh, oh get ready for what happens. Wait til you see the guy who runs the jail!
I think the chess piece is a King "King for a Day"
23:20 ... That's a great idea 💡 😂
Haha ❤️
Nice one, Biscute! 🙂 Thanks for sharing it.
It was fun watching you react to the Count of Monte Cristo, as always you are funny and witty.
The lady and the guy you thought were familiar faces are Helen McCrory and Luis Guzman. You might've knew them as Aunt Polly from Peaky Blinders and Gomez in Netflix's Wednesday.
Polly? Never made the connection, but it has been years for me since I saw "Count".
THANKS !! (Dave Strong)
--- Count of Monte Cristo (2002) with Jim Caviezel is the HAPPY reunion version for Mercedes and most of the fans of the story.
The NOVEL (and other movie versions) has the Count of Monte Cristo separating from Mercedes at the end and instead lives his life with Haydee (the daughter of Ali Pasha) whom he rescued from slavery. It's assumed that Edmund and Haydee marry with a happy ending.
Beautiful accent. Beautiful EVERYTHING!!!!
You are so kind
The evil prison guard in red is a great actor! Been in some great movies!
This is a book worth reading. It is much, much better than any of the movie adaptations.
17:48 character voice of Ceasar in Gladiator.:-Ernie Moore Jr.
If you don’t mind my asking, where is your accent from? If you’ve ever heard mine, I’d be intrigued to find out where you think I’m from 🤞🏽
I love this movie with such a passion I love it when Cristo meets the old man in prison
While this is an excellent movie, I highly recommend reading the book which is one of the best books ever written. Though don't read it thinking it will have the same Hollywood ending.
Or anything in common with the film at all.
This is one of my favorite movies. Great review.
::sees Jim Caviziel, says, "He looks like Henry Cavill"::
::sees Henry Cavill, says, "He's so cuuuuute"::
Aside from keeping the majority of names the same, this film has nothing in common with the book. Anyone that thinks The Count of Monte Cristo is a revenge story, has never read the book.
There's the 1988 adaptation that has Benedetto, Damglars' bankruptcy, Haydee testifying.
The ending is Count and Haydee together.

There is also gankutusou anime

5:16 another gem from Bisscute
thanks
So witty and charming. Never lose that accent. How do Romanian women not rule the world?
Thank you so much, I don’t know
That's not Marseille, that's La Valleta, the capital of Malta!!!
"Does everyone look like Henry Cavill?" LOL.
the usual great reaction....🤩
I subscribed because I found you to be intelligent and insightful.
eye shadow on point biss 💗
Thank you ❤️
Hey Biss, could you please react to Robert Rodriguez's "Once upon a time in Mexico" trilogy?
11:50 Of course you know her. Hellen McCrory, best known as Narcissa Malfoy.
In the 1988 adaptation the ending was Edmond and Haydee.

It was also very clear the Fernand and Mercedes were married and that Albert was indeed Fernand's son.
Love this reaction! 🖤
One thing I never understood was why Napoleon ordered the priest to burn down a church full of gorillas. That never made any sense to me
Great reaction as usual Biss😍...But still waiting for ya to watch some Westerns.... Tombstone, Young Guns, Magnificent 7, & 310 to Yuma are a few suggestions for ya...
The version with Val Kilmer plus it's a true story ;-)
@@dstrong86bluecoffee Yes! Val Kilmer's Doc Holiday & Kurt Russell's Wyatt Earp! Definitely a Classic!!
Madalina did tell me on Twitch that her Patreon voters rejected
TOMBSTONE (1993) Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer (even though it's true American history)
Most Movie Reviewers (and Patreon) have NOT seen classics from 1940 - 1970's
Besides BissFlix my other favorite reactor is @PopcornInBed
Popcorn In Bed (Cassie) does also review older classics !! She recently watched the WW2 movie BRIDGE on the RIVER KWAI
