Written by Alexander Dumas (1802-1870) who also created "the Three Musketeers" His father was "The General Of The Cavalry" In Napoleon's campaign in Egypt, and was also the First Black General in a European army. (Alexander's father was born to a French Noble man and a slave in Haiti) His father took him to France with his mother and raised him as a Noble, enrolling him in a prestigious military academy. Dumas is one of my most favorite authors! THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH ASIA & BJ!!!!!

@@22RedEyeJedi22 I have only read the three musketeers in its original french version, (as well as the english) I was shocked and embarasingly enjoyed the way they treated Planchet in it. But overall The Count of Monte Cristo Is by far my Favorite, His countless by-names, ie; Sinbad, as well as the story of Maximilian.... Just BEYOND well written!

In the Shawshank Redemption, when the inmates are sorting the books donated to the prison library, "The Count of Monte Cristo" was one of the books received. Red makes a joke about it being "educational" when Andy tells them it's about a prison break.
Ever since Shawshank, my husband always refers to. Dumas, pere etc fil, as "Dum-ass". Lol
And prominently featured in V for Vendetta. "He cared more about revenge..."

It's pretty obvious that SHAWSHANK was inspired by THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO in plotline. The 2 stories have lots of similar plot elements.

A Count is a noble that owned a county's worth(or more) of land. That's where the word "county" comes from.
Actually Count is European. British equivalent is Earl.
The word Count comes from the French comte, itself from Latin comes-in its accusative comitem-meaning "companion", and later "companion of the emperor, delegate of the emperor".
The inside joke in the story is that Dantes was really the ruler of a worthless rock in the sea and nobody cared to
challenge him on the legitimacy of it. Nobody cared as long as he was rich and there was something to gain by being his friend.
So county comes from count which comes from county?
@madcro8209 the Latin word "Comes" was a Roman military title for centuries before land was attached to it, sometime in the 9th century.
The word Count itself comes from French, with the equivalent noble title in England being the Earl.
So yeah the word for the title existed before the word for the subdivision of land.
Never read the book, went into this movie blind, and left the theater talking about it for the next 2 hours with my wife. Such an amazing story and movie. The writing, actors and score just killed it. A top 10 movie for me. GOD WILL GIVE ME JUSTICE.
The point there is that God gives justice, not revenge. Dantes had to learn that lesson.

This movie is really faithful to the book, so if you do decide to read it, it will feel really familliar. Except that i feel the movie makes you feel upset for Dantes, but in the book you feel anger. You also want vengence.

The first time a saw this movie and saw Henry Cavill, I picked him for Superman. Maybe I got lucky. I even talked with Cavill about this a few years back when he was building his computer and showing off Kai his Akita. Very cool guy.

I recently rewatched 1967's "Camelot" with Richard Harris as King Arthur. And I loved him as Marcus Aurelius in "Gladiator". What a long, wonderful, distinguished career he had.👑✨️🩵
When I saw the son, I immediately got it. Especially when he said it was his 16th birthday and the Count stated he was gone for 16 years. Good watch.
Sir Richard Harris makes any movie better. I loved him as the priest. He was the original Dumbledore, English Bob in Unforgiven, and when he was younger he was A Man Called Horse.(Actual name of the movie)😂

A Count is a rank within royalty, like Lord, Earl. The son is a teen Henry Cavill (Superman), The Count is Jim Caviezel who was Jesus in The Passion, and the priest was Richard Harris (Original Dumbledore)
Not really. "Count" is classed as nobility, same with earls and dukes. Only kings and queens and princes and princesses are considered royalty.

The prequel movie more likely would have been about the character played by Richard Harris. Everything he did for Dantes was instrumental in Dantes becoming a success. Without him, Dantes likely would have just died alone in that hole, forgotten.

This is one of my favorite movies. I ran into the actor who played Villefort at Sundance and discovered that he was very shy.
The description of the cell that Edmond Dante's in the book is actually way more hellish than they depicted in the movie. The book is an amazing work of literature.
This is my favorite of all the pretty good adaptations, some great actors in this.
The ending of the film was disastrous.

Alexandre Dumas read Homer (Dumas A., Mes Mémoires, Paris, Bouquins, 2003, p. 590)) and The Odyssey influenced the book The Count of Monte Cristo. In Book IV of The Odyssey, Telemachus visits Menelaus who won Helen back after his elopement with Paris. Helen was sorry for what she did, but still Menelaus needed to use drugs to forget his painful memories like Helen's union with Paris. This influenced Alexandre Dumas. Edmond would never be happy with Mercedes and would never forget her marriage to Fernand. This would always make him have painful memories. Their marriage would be deeply unhappy.
Haydee does not bring the count the painful memories that Mercedes does. More realistic for him to be happy with Haydée.
I definitely prefer the movie ending to the book, though I thoroughly enjoyed the book. @@Ὀδύσσεια-σ6ξ
Great reaction! This is one of my most favorite movies I"ve watched dozens of times. Another Jim Caviezel movie I really like is Frequency, with Dennis Quaid. Put that on your list and it'll bend your mind. It's cool.

I read the book for the first time as a 16 yr old. I fell completely in love with it! I still re-read it to this day!
One of my favorites. When my wife and I saw it first-run in the theater, at the point when The Count of Monte Cristo comes down some stairs in his elegant robe and goatee and all, a girl in the row behind us, gasped to her friend, "He's Gorgeous!". My wife and I laughed and still talk about it. LOL

This is one of my absolute favorite movies! I love how BJ said Jim Caviezel looked like Jesus in the prison, when he Played Jesus in Passion of the Christ. Another Mel Gibson directed movie.

Dumas is one of the best authors for a child's "required reading." Classic stories from him are of course this one, but also The Three Musketeers and The Man in the Iron Mask, which have also been made into movies.

One of my favs for sure. I read the book when I was in high school and loved 🥰 it. Alexander Dumas also wrote the Three Musketeers and they’re amazing too!

The movie is really good, no doubt, but the book is one of the most epic masterpieces ever written… highly recommend 😌
The book is rich and wonderful, but I never liked that Mercedes was treated like spoiled goods by Edmond in it. She as woman is also a victim of the time and the role placed upon her by society. I love this ending and the treatment of Mercedes much better than in the book. Also, Dogmara Dominczyk is so breathtaking as Mercedes and just in general, that this was the only way for the movie to end.
@@kyraspikes7542 hmmm.. idk. Mercedes made her choice, and only six months after “losing “ Edmund, she became Fernand’s wife, had his child. “Frailty.. thy name is woman”, says Edmond. And what about Haidee? Doesn’t she deserve love and happiness from the man who saved her from slavery? The Edmund that Mercedes knew died in that prison, and the man who emerged was forever the Count of Monty Cristo, it couldn’t have ended otherwise 😌

@@acidz0037ya Haydee does deserve happiness, but I personally found it a little weird that she was like at the most 21 and the youngest 18 (can’t remember) and count was easily over 35+. Then again, it was a different time and the 19th century. And their relationship felt forced and rushed at the end. Like “oh count! You’ve saved yourself and gotten revenge! Oh, and don’t forget, I’ve loved you since forever! And always will!” And then he embraces it and they kinda just sail/walk off into the distance lol.

I just discovered this movie myself, when a fellow member of our church/synagogue safety team recommended it to me last year. He said it’s one of his favorites. Now, I’m in love with it. And it’s now one of my mine.
I love this flick! It leaves soo much out of the story and changes a lot of events, but considering if they made a true movie from the book, it would probably be 8+ hours long! and this flick can inspire some to read the book and be in even greater aww from the full story.
They are filming a miniseries of The Count of Monte Cristo. with English actor Sam Claflin as the Count, Jremy Irons plays Abbé Faria and Karla Simone Spence as Haydee.
Director Bille August promises that it will be a faithful adaptation of the book.
Reading a novel and watching a movie based on a novel should be treated as 2 separate things. The director tries to capture the spirit of the story, not the minutia of the story.
This is the worst adaptation in the history of the book.
The incompetent screenwriter trying to “fix” the book’s “flaws”. I'm talking about the relationship between the count and Haydee, because for these narrow-minded people, it would be absurd for him to leave his ex-fiancée to marry a younger girl. Human beings are so complex and will not necessarily follow family values and nothing prevents a man from meeting another woman and leaving his family.
Real life shows very well how in practice everything can be different from the thinking of certain mediocre screenwriters. And this attempt to “fix” the story of the book only shows its stupidity.
Georgi Yungvald-Khilkevich was looking for an actress who could play Princess Haydee for his adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo and he found the perfect person in the beautiful young Nadira Mirzaeva, he fell in love with her. The book was adapted into a film with the title The Prisoner of Château D’if and during filming Georgi Yungvald-Khilkevich and Nadira became lovers, as Georgi Yungvald-Khilkevich was married. He divorced his wife to marry Nadira.
All that romantic idea of the film that tried to “fix” the story of the book is worthless in practice. A man abandoned a relationship of many years for another woman, which shows a certain poverty on the part of screenwriter Jay Wolper.
@@Nemo-j6zI think perhaps this movie is indeed an ideal version of what most contemporary viewers would want to see; but let me assure you, I am one of those happy viewers. I adore this version and much prefer Dantes ending up with Mercedes and not Haydée. Haydée and Dantes' coupling in the book always left a bad taste in my mouth and felt forced.

That's why I'm happier reading The Wives by Alexandra Popoff than reading Fifty Shades of Grey and Twilight.
The Wives is a story about six wives of Russian writers: Nadezhda Mandelstam, Sophia Tolstaya, Anna Grigorievna, Vera Nabokova, Elena Bulgakova and Natalia Svetlova.
Real stories about marriages without sentimental cliches
Natalia Svetlova and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn are very reminiscent of Edmond and Haydee. The book gives a glimpse of how Edmond would act if he were a real person. In fact, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn had a girlfriend from school and later a wife whom he left after being released from a concentration camp. In fact, his first wife had entered into another relationship while he was in prison.

Amadeus guys. It's the story of Mozart the musical genius. It won 8 Oscars. Fantastic movie and The Red Violin, that was crazy.

This was 99% shot in the Maltese Islands. the Prison is an old castle of the Knights of Malta on Comino. The 'Isle of montecristo' is a small island rock , called Filfla. and the rest mainly shot in Malta. The port of Marseilles is actually the Grand Garbour in Valletta , Malta..... the Street Carnival scene was shot in a square in Mdina , the old fortified capital city. ah man its so wierd for me to watch this movie. lol
The old guy was the first dumbledore :) and Jim did play Jesus!!! His best frenemie was in the Time Machine !! So good!
Saw this in the cinema, not expecting much but turned out to be really gripping! Classic revenge tale told with great actors.
The book is a bit darker. My favorite book.
This story really needs an entire miniseries. The movie does a good job of the basic story. But the way the Count dismantles everyone's lives, piece by piece, most of the time without them knowing he's doing it, is so insanely well done in the book. He ruins them mentally, socially, financially, without ever actually doing the dirty work himself. The story takes the 1600 pages in the book, but it deserves a full 8 hours of a show.
The story of the book was adapted very faithfully to the book in the French miniseries The Count of Monte Cristo (Le comte de Monte Cristo) from 1979, directed by Denys de La Patellière, the script was written by Jean Chatenet and André Castelot, with Jacques Weber as Edmond Dantes / the count, Roger Dumas as Danglars, Jean-François Poron as Gérard de Villefort, Manuel Tejada as Fernand Mondego, Carla Romanelli as Mercédès Herrera, Virginie Vidal as Haydee, Leonor Pinhão as Eugénie Danglars; Diogo Dória as Maximilien Morrel, Marie Matile as Valentine de Villefort, Claude Brosset as Gaspard Caderousse, Gerhard Acktun as Benedetto, Patrick Laplace as Albert.
The French made a very complete adaptation without any changes.
There's the 1964 BBC miniseries with Alan Badel as The Count. There are 12 episodes of 25 minutes in length.
France and Italy filming a miniseries with British actor Sam Claflin as The Cont which premieres this year. Jermey Irons plays Abbé Faria.

Hey guys, This is a great historically driven novel/drama, a timeless classic. Got to love a story of betrayal, revenge and redemption. I think Alex Dumas is a great writer and storyteller, much like Shakespeare and Dame Agatha Christie which I loved reading when I was young. Couple of my favorite books to film is "Hamlet" with Mel Gibson and "Romeo + Juliet" with Leonardo DiCaprio, "Man in the Iron Mask" also with Leo, great films and novels. When I was young, I liked the Three Musketeers best of Dumas's works. Later I liked the Man in the Iron Mask. At 64, I think this is now my favorite.

49:25 - in the book, Edmond also learned, the hard way, that vengeance should be left to God. That no matter how powerful, rich or clever you are, you can't count all the ways your revenge will backfire or the innocents that will be caught in it's path.
The film seems like an attempt to imitate Homer's odyssey.
Ulysses with the support of the goddess Athena, he massacred his wife's suitors, they dreamed of usurping his kingdom, his wife and killing his son, Edmond punishes his enemies, especially Fernand in a direct confrontation for the years at Chãteau D'If and for having married Mercedes.
Edmond's revenge is righteous in the film, just like Ulysses in the odyssey, he shows no sign of regret or forgiveness. Mercedes in the book is shocked by revenge, unlike Penelope in The Odyssey. The lovers reunite in the film, just as Ulysses reunites with his wife.
Just as Ulysses reunites with his son Telemachus, Edmond discovers that Albert is his son. Ulysses returns to his home in Marseilles in the film just as Ulysses returns to Ithaca. Both return to their home, return to their family
This entire journey of the 2002 film, of the man who fights against those who dreamed of usurping everything from him, he takes revenge, recovers his family and returns to his place of origin was written brilliantly by Homer.
That's why the film was so criticized in Europe and didn't do well at the box office there. Because the film rewrote everything Dumas wrote in the opposite way.
Dantes feels totally alienated from his country of origin, his revenge did not bring back what he lost, he and Mercedes despite their past love no longer have any ties, he became a different man from the one she loved, the marriage of her with Fernand did not bring back good memories. He has a stronger bond with Haydee because they have exactly the same suffering past.
This one of my favorite movies of all time and so glad more people are watching it and enjoying it. 🔥🔥🔥
I love this book. Written by a black Frenchman. Love this movie as well. My mom loves this movie. When she was flying to and from Uzbekistan in 2002. She watched this movie 3 times on the plane. A young Henry Cavill (Superman) is in this movie.

When the Abbe is dying and Edmond says, "I don't believe in God," and the Abbe says, "He believes in YOU." Something all of us need to hear, I think.
I prefer the book, cause in the book Mercedes ends up alone and broke. While Edmond lives happy with another.

In 1840 Dumas wrote a book about Napoleon and this story influenced the story of the book.
Napoleon-Jospehine -marie Louise inspired Edmond-Mercedes-haydee.
Just as Napoleon divorced Josephine to marry Marie Louise, Edmond moved away from Mercedes and married Haydee.
Josphine and Napoleao never had children, just like Edmond and Mercedes

Good reaction to an awesome movie, guys. Btw, your remark around the 14:12 minute mark was hilarious when you said that he's beginning to look like Jesus. Because just 2 years later in 2004, the same actor (Jim Caviezel) played the role of Jesus in the Mel Gibson movie "The Passion of The Christ"....a movie where he was also beaten and tortured. Also, of important note...the novel this movie was based on, was written by a black French author back in the 1800s (1830s). This black author is the same one who also wrote "The Three Musketeers" and "The Man In The Iron Mask". There have been many Hollywood movie adaptations of the novel "The Count of Monte Cristo", at least since the 1930s. This 2002 version is one of my favs. But another adaptation of the "TCOMC" that I still love and occasionally binge-watch, is the modern TV adaptation from ABC called "Revenge", which aired for 4 seasons from 2011 to 2015. It was based on the present era, with most of the storyline centered in the Hamptons, Long Island (NY). GREAT TV series..."Revenge".
Also, I'm not sure if you realized it...but the young actor who played the role of his 16-year old son, 'Albert', is actually actor Henry Cavill who went on to play Clark Kent/Superman in the DC Universe movies over 10 years later ('Man of Steel", 'Batman vs Superman", 'Justice League').
This is in my top 5 favorite movies.

This was an amazing movie , Jim caviziel is an amazing actor he has a series called " Person of interest " I can't recommend it enough, it's beyond amazing and unlike anything you ever reacted to ,it's up there with GOT & breaking bad for me, you guys should react to it and btw that old man in prison was the great Richard Harris he played Dumbledore in the early Harry Potter movies before he died .

Richard Harris, by the by, was Marcus Aurelius in Gladiator, yes. He was also Dumbledore in the first two Harry Potter films before he passed away. He was in a lot of classic films, too. Mutiny on the Bounty, Camelot, and Gulliver's Travels to name a few. He was also in Patriot Games and Unforgiven, one of the best Western movies ever made.
The book is fire. Great film

It's funny watching Asia and BJ say "We have no idea about this movie" with the SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION poster right behind them. That movie was clearly inspired by The Count of Monte Cristo and it's referenced right in the movie. Dumas's implied message in his novel is "A life well lived is the best revenge".

The greatest revenge stories of all time . I first read this book back in jr high and was blown away by it and seen this in the theater when it came out a few things they changed for the movie but wasn’t a big deal . I hope u guys see this comment because this is one if my favorite books. The movie was based in the novel by Alexandre Dumas, who lived in France during during the Napoleonic era. And he was black! He also wrote the 3 musketeers books and the man in the Iron mask!!
A lot is said about Jim Cavizel's performance in this and it is great, but Edmunds 'friend' is played by Guy Pierce and he put in a great performance as well. He was in Iron Man 3 as the bad guy and quite a few other movies. Great actor!
Guy Pierce was originally offered to play Edmund Dantes and not the bad guy. However, Guy turned it down because he thought it was more interesting to play Fernand Montego ( the baddie ).
Fun Fact: The actor that plays Abbe Faria is also the 1st Dumbledore from Harry Potter. He was an absolute gem of an actor.

Love this movie so much. I have the unabridged version of the book. The actors in this movie were excellent. One of my favorite movies ever. I love revenge movies.

in the original story, edmond dantes used the fortune to destroy his enemies as the count..but he didn't get mercedes, he also didn't kill fernand...in the book fernand de morecerf, killed himself upon being exposed for his misdeeds, edmond finds love with an african slave named haydee he bought, picture that.. a white man and a black woman in a popular story getting a happy ending, also the young man playing albert mondego is a young henry cavill

My favorite book I had to read in English class back in HS, and one of my favorite stories overall. Vengeance is an absolutely valid motive, and an outcome that many terrible people sorely deserve. It doesn't make one noble or righteous to forgo taking revenge on someone who has wronged you, it makes one naive and a fool.
Also, Napoleon very nearly conquered the whole of Europe before suffering a series of misfortunate defeats in battle, which is why his captors are so very zealous in guarding the shores of Elba. He was a very cunning and dangerous man.
This is one of the greatest classic book adaptations ever
