I'm Burt Izumikawa (2nd game opponent), and I found this hilarious. I was out of my league in that junior championship losing every game but the last one and only making it as an alternate for Jon Litvinchuk. Little did I know that a few participants would go on to be US champions.
I only play chess casually now, but have a lot of good memories from that tournament, such as staying with fellow tournament participant Dan Edelman and walking through downtown New York, watching The Untouchables.
Ben was hilarious then too. I don't recall the exact lines, but I knew he poked fun at fellow participant Vivek Rao to the tune of Janet Jackson's Nasty, something like "Who that refuting the Sicilian Dragon "Nasty Rao, Nasty Rao".

Thanks for chiming in, this is a 3 year old comment from the time I respond to it, but I really appreciate your details because they enrichen what is otherwise just pieces on the board. I'm also glad that you enjoyed the video, I can only imagine what it would be like to see one of my games being taught by a GM (even if it is on the losing side).
All great games require 2 players, can't have a great victory without someone to take a bite out of a humble pie.

Old memes. When I was in college around 1980, I laughed my posterior off at SNL. Now I don't even get many of the jokes, as I don't keep up with modern bands, social memes, etc. 4 decades later.
Now there's this whole internet thing that lets me easily pursue science, math, chess, MTG, etc. so I have NO desire to be bombarded with ad bombed media.

Ben is my favorite GM for character reasons. No one loves Ben more than Ben loves Ben. Not even Ben's wife loves Ben more than Ben loves Ben. But, what makes Ben so great a chess personality is his ability to make light of his play while trash-talking his opponents. I like when he belittles the kids and they don't even know it. God bless you, Ben! You make chess fun!

Gramdmaster Ben is unlikely to read this. However this being my first comment I shall proceed. First and foremost I hope I am united in congratulating the grandmaster for his patience with the young. Second, what if at 10:17 Black responds first with capturing the knight on c3 with check. Depending on what White plays Black can capture on e6 with a pawn before moving black Queen to c6 threatening white rook in corner forcing capture by white queen which helps black redevelop the knight to c6 or a loss of tempo because there is not any conclusive mating attack on the Black King even down a piece and necessarily an exchange knight or bishop for rook. White ought have castled. I feel a computer could have eked out a draw and so this is not grandmaster Ben's best play.

    • @johnmcdonough955
      @johnmcdonough955 9 місяців тому

Black rook to f6 protected by pawn and king if White recaptures rook with queen and though the h file is open an exchange of queens may be forced. Black will come off much worse but it aint over!

27:40 Grandmasters argue about whether to play h6 or h5
I think h6 is terrible here and Ben is right to prefer h5
    If you go
    e4 c6
    d4 d5
    e5 Bf5
    h4 h6
    g4 Be4
    f3 Bh7
    e6 Qd6
    exf7+ Kxf7
    f4
and computer says its OK for black but its tricky to defend and develop, very easy to just get crushed
On the other hand if you play h5 you might lose that pawn but you'll have good play for it in the center and the game is much closer to a "normal" Caro Kann
On the other hand (lot of hands here) you can just play a6 or Qb6 and respond to g4 with Bd7
