Scott Martin had a great quote a while back. He said that as soon as you believe that a bass is intelligent they’ve won because you start assigning abilities to the fish they don’t possess which will in turn have you making poor decisions because you’re using an erroneous basis upon which to make your decisions

I have a pond and when I fed the fish the bluegill came in to feed. One day I noticed that several bass were hanging out just barely in site. They were watching the feeding frenzy but did not attack. As an experiment, I caught a small bluegill and tossed it out. All of the bass tried to get the bluegill before it hit the water. Over time, the bass became conditioned to this and they would get right to the edge of the pond where I fed the gills. Eventually I could hand feed them and got a good idea of just how big some of the bass were in my pond, which were HARD to catch. The bass would also follow me around the 3/4 acre pond. Long story short, I observed how a bass could be conditioned to feeding opportunities. The bass also became uncatchable unless you hand tossed a lure into the lake…to fool them into thinking it was a gill. Their ability to adapt to feeding conditions is amazing.

It's interesting to me how different fresh and saltwater fish are. You can get reaction bites from saltwater fish but you can also predict when the majority will eat by knowing their habits according to the tide.
How much do you think the moon affects bass feeding? Do you pay attention to the solunar tables? I've been using an app that shows the lunar tables and tides to predict when the fish will be more active. It seems accurate, the fish are active when it says they will be, depending on the spot.

A leadership guru I know would always say that the true size of a man is determined by the way he treats small men. I believe that to be true for bass fisherman behavior too. There are some big names on YT I don't follow anymore because they treat the bass with disrespect and I would like to see them belly flop from a bridge. Matt once said catching bass is like enticing a cat. Since I have adopted this approach my success has improved tremendously, disregarding the weather, water temp, and our bass water here in Pittsburgh extremely pressured. Enjoy every moment you fish guys, there will be a last time.

So I agree with everything except the intelligence discussion. It’s probably just semantics but the way ‘intelligence’ is defined in scientific terms largemouth bass do not possess the level of intelligence you give them credit for. There is a big difference between having the highly developed instincts of an apex predator in an environment vs what we define as ‘intelligence’. The other issue is most humans can’t separate the emotional aspect out of intelligence which makes it harder to have a legitimate discussion. Bass simply are not on the same level as say dolphins , whales and primates when we measure intelligence as it is typically defined. The reason this is important to bass fisherman is that if you understand why bass exhibit certain behaviors you’ll have a much better chance of getting them to bite one of your lures. I spent 25 years blue water fishing and because of that I’ve spent thousands of days around dolphin & porpoise who can be found around tuna & marlin. Not once in 25 years did we ever hook a dolphin, even when using live bait. Why? Because compared to I a blue marlin or yellowfin tuna - both apex predators similar to bass - a dolphin is an order or magnitude more intelligent and are able to override their instincts with some level of intellect when making decisions and that’s the difference

Last Sunday I caught a 9lb 3oz & a 4lb 1oz in about 2' of water high sun & water was 92°! I'm sure fish are deep & shallow all year everywhere just depends on the particular fish & it's habits

I dont believe that bass will now avoid baits that were heavily used back in the 70's and 80's. Due to the fact i fish a lot of smaller lakes that were beat to death with these baits back in the day. And i catch a lot more fish with the old baits than the guys who are using the "latest and greatest" bass baits. I know a couple of guys who fish a particular metal lipped crankbait that was widely used back in the 70's. And they will often out-catch anyone who is throwing the newer model crankbaits.

I think they don't hit those lures because you don't put the time in with those lures like you used too. Hula poppers and Jitterbugs get bit just as much as they ever did. Both lures just have to be modified because bass don't stay pinned with those crappy hook hangers. I fish modified versions of all three in the California Delta waterways along with the Speed Trap (which is one of the first square bills) and they get smashed. The Tiny Torpedo Jitterbug and Hula Popper STILL catch fish .....period!

Exactly! I still have those lures you mentioned in my tackle bag, and they still work. I still throw Manns jelly worms like I did in the 80’s still hammer them. Bass are smart yes but they don’t know the difference in lures from different generations, when new generations of bass comes along they’ve never seen a torpedo or a top water or plastic baits, they get educated by fishing pressure but I agree with you man those older lures still work, we say they don’t and label them as “old” because something bigger and better is always coming out. Who is really being “ lured” when we walk down isles at bass pro or wherever and pick the things that we like and things that we think they ought to hit, it’s kinda funny. There are tried and true colors and some that look like baitfish but most of the time we label them as old and push them aside because we wouldn’t want to be seen with some of those old lures in our boxes lol

Agree with everything but assigning human qualities to animals. I like animals, arguably more than most people. It can be debated animals evolve and develop characteristic behaviors, some may suggest unique to them problem solving abilities, for their particular ecological niche. Look no further than crocodiles, survived largely unchanged since the dinosaurs. Let's not forget the Darwin idea of survival of the fittest. It may not only apply to species, but also to individual blood lines within a species. No biggy, agree to disagree for now.

Bass are smart animals, but they are not “super intelligent”. If they were, there would not be any “triggering” of a Bass. They are not stupid, but they have not evolved….at least not in the last 100 years. They simply don’t live long enough and there is no generational learning. As for man thinking we are better than all other species…. Got to disagree. We are better than EVERY other species. Man was given dominion over ALL the animals of the earth. There is a Bass in one of my neighborhood ponds that just in the last 5 years I have caught at least a dozen times. I know because on his right side, a few of his scales color form the letter “M”. I actually call him “M” like in the Bond films. If he was super smart, he would never be caught again. I do respect the fish I catch. As carefully as I can, I take the hook out and gently release it back into the water. I sometimes even say “thanks” to the fish for the fun. In the end though, I can figure out a way to survive in the water, the Bass (or any fish) won’t figure out how to live on land before it dies from no oxygen in the water. Man has generational learning (books), fish don’t.

@@randyblaukatintuitive….say what you want Randy…..you are in the extreme minority on that viewpoint. It doesn’t matter if it’s a religious viewpoint or not. Man was given dominion over all the animals. The fact is man has the ability to do whatever we choose to do with EVERY animal on this planet. Animals do not have that ability. So religious belief or not, WE are the dominate species on the planet. By default, that makes us the best. Doesn’t mean we can destroy things just to do so, only that we have the ability to do so. The new movie Oppenheimer clearly shows that. Someday I would really like to have a sit down discussion (preferably while fishing) about facts and religion. I think it would be very interesting.

How is it arrogant if it Divinely ordained? And yes, man has learned and been taught by generations preceding us how to survive and prosper. Animals that nurture their young longer than 5 weeks teach their offspring how to hunt and survive. Most mammals have generational learning. Numerous water based and air breathing animals (Dolphins, Orca’s, whales, and a few others) teach their young how to survive. Few, if any water breathing animals do that. This is scientific fact. Sharks, ocean fish species, fresh water fish species don’t nurture their young. Sharks are on their own from the moment they are born. Why has human kind had such monumental strides in advancing our status in the world, and not 1 other animal has? And I’m not talking about just the last 2 or 3 hundred years. Why you don’t accept that fact is curious to me. As I type this out, I’m sitting in my air conditioned home while thousands of animals struggle to cope with the 95 degree heat. Keeping my religious beliefs on the sideline here, Man is simply the top species and no other animal on this planet can displace us. That is scientific fact. Only the good Lord and mankind can end mankind’s dominion over the planet.
