Just eyeballing this it looks like you can swap the "inflation charge" from one steering wheel to the other. They are held on by four bolts. Take the single stage inflator off the old steering wheel and bolt it on the new steering wheel in place of the new two stage inflator. I haven't done this, but if you measure the bolt pattern and it's the same. it seems to be an easy solution for keeping your airbag operational.
For anyone wondering about the airbag. The new airbag has a dual charge. A primary and a secondary. This is because newer collision detection systems have the ability to detect the severity of an impact and fire the higher or lower airbag charge. You can connect the airbag but it will take some research to decide which charge you prefer to have operational and how you want to go about connecting the wiring. Just do your research and be careful
I feel the same about the cruise, with gears and 35s it's still a lot to ask for it to handle. Ironically cruise was on my short list when looking at jeep and I probably turned away a few better options that didn't have it... Personally I love the feel of the factory wheel and mine somehow has not falled to pieces yet. I would recommend talking to Project Dan H he is super friendly youtuber you've probably seen his vids. He likes upgrading steering wheels and knows a lot about how to make different models play nice.
You know what man, I looked an xj a couple months ago and this guy did this steering wheel mod and I asked him about the airbag light and he said no light. And I thought that meant he got it working. It didn’t even look occur to me that he just pulled the bulb. That sneaky bastard haha. Good thing I didn’t buy it. Who knows what else he lied about.
I actually found your video trying to go trhough options to modernize my XJ. It is a 98 2 door model and honestly, I just want to keep the body and the parts I cant replace by any means like the dash and door panels. I think new wrangler seats can be adapted into the XJ (at least the front ones) and some other things. For the steering wheel, replacing the buttons for other functions sounds amazing, not sure what functionality would be best for most people, but Audio controls are super popular for this location, so it could be a good bet if possible.
Just a thought about the airbag, why not just cut the wire end off both air bag harness's and switch them out? IF your new wheel didn't come with the pigtail for the air bag, you might have to hunt one down. Hope this helps. New wheel looks great!
I thought about doing that but the old airbag just has 1 pigtail connection and the new one has 2. Not sure which one to hook up and definitely afraid to hook up wrong and blow the bag. I always worry when out wheeling about setting it off on a trail so now thats no longer a issue. Thanks!
I was told that connecting the 2 stage airbag in parallel to the existing ACM wire will get the airbag light off. That was from a vendor in Etsy. Airbag plugs can be purchased from ebay brand new. That is where I got mine from.
FYI, NEVER adjust the centering of the steering wheel by moving it a spline or two one way or another. Make sure it's exactly where the previous wheel was. The clock spring is designed to only turn each way a certain amount and you will ruin it if you adjust your steering wheel to center it. Center your wheel properly by adjusting the steering components during an alignment.
All the mods are cool, I get it, but only if you never intend to sell it. If you ever try to sell a modded XJ you'll never get back the money that you put into in but I guess that's true of any modified vehicle. My XJ is bone stock, maybe someday I'll have enough money for a 2nd XJ that I can lift and modify, that way I'll have the best of both worlds. The only mod that I really want to do is the airbag delete. I just don't trust a 25 year old air bag. For that reason I thank you for posting this informative video.
Non car people are the ones who won't pay for a modified vehicle. They don't understand. As for mine it's not going anywhere. That jeep was the inspiration for this channel. I couldn't do that to it. Thanks for watching!
when you bolted down the wheel and drove it did you feel the wheel had a little resistance? i think the wheel needs a little relief in the back casting for the wire trough that supports the ab, cruise and horn wires, i believe the clockspring is binding, and slap a 2.7 ohm resister between so no illumination...
Wheel feels just like the old one. Only wire is the horn and its fine. Airbag and cruise wont hookup because airbag is a gen 2 style with different connections and system that runs it. Guy on etsy sells a kit to make cruise work but I'm not a fan of cruise so not doing it. As for the light eventually I'll pull the bulb out. Inspections are a thing of the past it's registered historic now so nobody will fail it for something so I'm not worried. The moaning from wheel has been doing it since I bought it shes old.
I've got everything working with his mod and airbag as well, I will have to make a relief for the lower plastic portion that butt's up to wheel from clockspring. Just curious if you felt the same it's pushing the spool into clockspring g Housing
@@richardtugwell6229 I've never noticed anything out of the ordinary after doing the swap. When I installed it I went kinda heavy on the nut that holds it down so mine sits as far down as possible. Feels like the old wheel.
I would like to but the cruise control switches off of you 98 steering wheel.. I have a 98 but eh switches the last owner put in were a later model where they changes the amp signals after 98 so mine doesn't work
Hello, I really like your idea. I have a Jeep Wj and I'm wondering if I can replace the steering wheel from the Compass to my Wj. I saw the steering wheel swap from Wj to Xj. What do you think ? Regards
I've seen people put grand cherokee steering wheels in xj's before. So I would assume this wheel would work in it but I can't commit to saying 100% it will.
Not 100% sure but I dont believe this will work on your year. I can't find the notes on wheel hub sizes across years and models along with the wheel itself. They had several different models with different size bores.
What's hilarious is that Jeep airbags are Known to not work. I have been in one that rolled on the highway and the airbags didn't go, I've nailed a deer with one and the airbags didn't deploy, minus these new Fiats, The company that made the airbag that Chrysler used in these Jeeps was sued for 10 years straight because of these airbags never working and going off in the most inconvenient times, I'm pretty sure the only way they stopped getting sued is because the last judgment exempted them from getting sued anymore which is insane because people are still using their products that they sold that are 85% defective but they dont care, if you live in a state that has inspections I feel so bad for you because it's a complete sham made for companies to profit off of instead of caring about safety, All they want to see is that stupid air bag light off and they don't actually care if the airbag works. If they did they'd allow us to still sue that company.......
Right after I watched this video I woke up and went to the junk yard and got the same wheel and swapped mine! Love it! Thanks man!

True I never thought about that. I'd be worried something goes wrong and I'm not interested in it exploding in the face. 🤣 but good idea thanks!

While you're back behind the gauges for that light, rip that damn beeper off and replace the lights with LED. :D

The wheel is indexed to only go on 1 way. So the option to adjust it at the column is not happening.
Wished these worked on a 93 lol
