    I have both. I disagree with the M40x being 'muddy' - that's just inaccurate - in fact it has a very glassy top end. What's happening is the 7506 has a well known 2-3kHz bump that makes it very bright by comparison to many studio cans. The M40x is far more flat and true to the source in that region, and in my own listening I miss no detail at all. The Sony brightness highlights flaws more clearly, so no wonder studios love them, but they're not as musical at the high end at all, female vocals can kill you :)
    The M40x has much fuller sounding mids/lower mids as well - so for eg acoustic guitars you'll hear the strings on the Sony's but on the 40x you hear strings but also the body of the guitar more clearly.
    Over time the bass definitely strengthens on the Sonys - it get's very clear and subwoofer solid - fantastic for movies/tv.
    To me the Sonys sound like two small quality satellites and a sub, the M40x like two quality larger speakers and a sub. Both are great, but overall the M40x is just much truer to the source signal.

      techfreshness We like what we like absolutely! And believe me, that subwoofer bass of the 7506 will get louder and more impacting over time. Watching tv with my 5 year old pair right now and it's awesome. And get rid of those pads, they'll fall apart in months - Beyer DT250 velours are great replacements but there are many alternatives. Thanks for the reviews and enjoy!

      ***** Was long ago, but I don't think so. It's a VERY common 7506 mod for many many years so that tells me people are generally happy with it.

    • @andrewpolitano
      @andrewpolitano 7 років тому +3

      Yeah, the 7506's are brighter, but for a good reason. When field monitoring or used in studio situations, that exaggerated high-end will let you hear hissy guitar amps or people speaking in the background on newscasts. While they are brighter, they are far more detailed up top and also in the midrange and are quite revealing, making them much more suited to production and studio situations rather than a pair of headphones that one would listen to casually. They are for critical listening and that has been their intended purpose for over two decades. I choose the Sennheiser IE80's over either of these options for on-the-go casual listening or travel and I use the 7605's in the studio though for their ability to reveal imperfections in my source material.

    I’ve owned the Sony MDRV600’s since when they came out in the early 90’s, 92 to be exact. And I used those things for 29 plus yrs...😳. I did professional demo’s and even recorded an excellent full album with them, seriously. I just ordered their big brother, the MDR 7506. And I know they will be great. No doubt in my mind.

  • @matrixate

    Great comparison. I actually use the 7506 in my home studio to check for artifacts in the audio due to algorithmic limitations of plugins...so, yea. I don't know what I would do without them. I mix on a Yamaha HS series set with sub but for surgical sound tailoring...I will always need a good set of cans that can reveal the little things that you usually can miss on any monitors. I also use a pair of V6's to check for muddy mixes. If there is too much mud...the V6 are a really good test. This combo works for me...so, take my comment with a grain of salt please. Peace.

      +techfreshness He likely means "reverb". Echo would be like clapping twice, where reverb would describe the difference between clapping outside vs inside a bathroom or metal bucket. Basically distinct/complete repetitions vs multiple instant repetitions that represent the environment.
      The audio quality is really high, though your lack of pop-filter and/or baffle give the audio a crisp "in the room" feel vs the studio-recorded soft/warm that many go for.

    The 7506's are great, but for professional mixing, use them with something like Sonarworks Headphone calibration, or make one yourself using a graphic EQ- then you'll get a VERY accurate and flat response that still has the crispness and transparency you like. I tried a ATH m40x today after all the rave reviews, and found although they sounded reasonably flat and accurate, they lacked the openness of the Sony's (when calibration was applied) which was more natural. WITHOUT calibration, the m40x would be a better choice FOR MIXING and pro use, WITH calibration, the Sony's are clearly better for pro use. Without calibration, the Sony's however, are a better overall and more pleasant sounding set. My choice overall, yeah, the 7506.

    • @xaosnox
      @xaosnox 5 років тому

      I'm wishing I'd never watched this video. Sonarworks is out of my current budget, but I'd be interested in how you would manually calibrate your monitors. I mean, I can throw an EQ on a monitoring bus in my DAW, but did you just counter a frequency response curve with an EQ, or is there some magic you can do with a series of sine waves throughout the frequency range? I'm really curious, because, after listening to some side-by-side comparisons between some source tracks against the Sony 7506, ATH M40x, and Sennheiser HD280 all went through a 100 hour burn in and recorded through a headphone analysis "head", the M40x sounded closer to the source audio by a LONG mile in a couple of different tests. This, and the fact that they have 3 replaceable cables while the Sonys have not only a hardwired cable, but exposed cables at the output/input of each earpiece, made the M40x a no-brainer for me. I primarily use them for recording and editing voice over work, but I also need them to double as monitors for mixing and mastering demos. I know that anyone who is a serious mixer/masterer will crap buckwheat pancakes if they hear about anyone trying to mix audio with closed back headphones, or without professional, calibrated monitors while sitting in the sweet spot, but I've been able to calibrate my ears to an extremely inexpensive pair of Sennheiser HD201s. In fact, I had a couple of "small" NDA jobs that were tossed my way as more of a challenge than anything else, turn big when my client's client wanted all of the tracks to sound like the ones I mixed and mastered. This frustrated my client to no end, as they are … well, I can't really say anything about them at all, contractually, but I think it's safe to say they were using a much better setup than me with my HD201s headphones. That could be just about anyone, right? I am going to need to make the most out of these Audio Technica cans for a while, since the work I'm doing is for charity, and every single dollar saved goes a long way to improve lives, so any tips on how to calibrate them manually would be greatly appreciated. I've had the world's best plugins donated to me, so the quality of the calibration will be the best you can get "in the box". I'd just love to know the how-to. And everyone's ears are different, so it seems like this would need to be a subjective thing with each channel being individually adjusted, and I know the Sonarworks product doesn't do that. I can somehow tell when I have the right and left switched. It sounds unbalanced to me, and it's not related to video cues or the fit. I really don't understand why it is.

    No pair of headphones is 'flat'. I've looked at loads of curves for various cans and they are NEVER flat. The Audio Technicas, for example, have a lift at the low end, a slight scoop in the mids and then the usual squiggly line around the 2-3khz mark. I think there is science behind the reason why manufacturers just don't make a pair of dead flat cans - something to do with the space ears need to accurately judge frequencies. If they try and factor this in they sound all wrong. The best you can do with any cans is to get to know them by referencing loads of pro recordings so you have an idea where everything sits. Get to know your headphones and it doesn't really matter if you're using $50 or $500 units - your car stereo will probably tell you a whole lot more of what you need to know...

      Harry Cummings Ah ok. Another option you could look at is the Samson SR950/Superlux HD669. Great value. Z Reviews has a video up on them. I own the Samsons and I quite enjoy them for gaming especially. Any of these closed backs would work well. The Status Audio CB-1 is a good value as well if you value comfort and sound over durability, but if durability is a concern, get the 7506 or M40x. Both will be great. I have the 7506 with some Beyerdynamic velour earpads and I like them, but I tend to enjoy using the Samsons more for gaming. They cannot be used outdoors unless you wanna lug huge cans out and you don't mind looking kinda dumb while out, but if you need closed for at home while gaming, I really like the Samsons. It's all personal preference though, someone may absolutely hate the Samsons and that's totally fine. Do you need portability? Do you want the most isolating headphone?

      Greetings,
      This why I prefer the MDR-V6. The treble end is not as pronounced as in the 7506 where the treble is brighter, or more forward. Compare their graphs. I can listen to my V6s for hours (which I often do) without ear fatigue. They are flatter across the spectrum. The base is pretty solid, with punch when it is called for.
      There is a reason why the V6 Studio Monitor headphone has lasted for 36 years without a change or a tweak! They never needed it.

    tl;dr reddit told me these are the best headphones evvvaaaaar for under $100 and I believed them.
    (I didn't try Samson SR 950 which actually are the best bang for buck budget reference headphones on the market.)

    The best headphones under a $1000 are, and always will be, the Sony MDR V6 / MDR 7506. They can be bought for under $100

      Just ordered 7506's after breaking the left ear cup for the 2nd time on SRH440's - look it up, it's a known weak point. It's too bad, as I loved the sound of my SRH440's, but I'm not going to buy them for a 3rd time and just start counting down until the left ear cup breaks. My 2nd pair lasted 5 years, which is pretty reasonable, but I'm not giving them a "3rd time's a charm" chance to not break.

      @@techfreshness I cancelled the order before I got them. I went with ATH-M40X's. I knew if I even took the 7506's out of the box I couldn't return them and the reviews confirmed my memories of Sony monitor headphones being too bright and lacking on the low end. I'm really liking the ATH-M40X's - they made my ears really itchy for the first few days, however my skin must be used to them now. Loving the warmth and low end punch combined with full mids.

    I have the m40x and the build quality is absolutely crap. It broke in what 3 months? 6 months? I don't exactly remember. I had to get it soldered together so it was usable again. You can also super glue but the build quality is just unacceptable. I'm a teen so I can't afford buying $100 headphones everytime. I like the sound though but I use the brainwavz hm5 memory foam pads so they sound way different.
