The story of Hence is so good! It's thematically rich even in a short overview, and I can imagine dozens of ill-fated quests to find the remains of the King in Bronze. The ruins must house all kinds of dragons and other hostile wildlife. Speaking of bronze, I love how the kinsbane starts out orange and turns green as though it's forming a patina.
One of coolest things I’ve ever learned about snakes is that every time you see the moniker of “King” it means they eat other snakes. A killer of killers a true apex predator. Super cool
16:59 the image of the hulkbreaker just destroying the kinsbane jaw in a punch is cool in of itself but it gets better with the context that the hullbreakers are the ones slowing down the spread of the dragon that is evolved to kill other dragons.
This has got to be my new favorite dragon. I love everything about it. It doesn't feel like a monster, yet it isn't overly Anthropomorphised. It really feels like the lion or T-rex of your world like a truly majestic creature worthy of respect.
The Kinsbane being able to react to food unconsciously reminds me of the scene in the movie "The Host." There's a scene where the monster is fast asleep, so one of its captives tries to escape, only for its tail to catch them again without waking up.
the lekking, the courtship, the parental care, the adaptations, the hunting methods, the specialization, the ecology, the cultural aspects. they are all excellent. i would be happy to achieve even half of your world building talent with my own work.
I love this. I wonder if any civilizations have succeeded in living peacefully beside a kinsbane, maybe even stretching its lifespan by assisting it in hunts? Less injuries sustained to the dragon would mean their large kingly bodyguard would live longer.
The Great Kinsbane's biological niche is incredibly well thought-out, quite possibly the best example of a fictional apex predator I know of. I also really like how its got a bit of a Monsterverse kaiju-vibe to it; a beast of terrible might that can nonetheless live in harmony with humans... as long as humans take care to keep that harmony intact. A sort of unspoken truce between civilization and natural forces

So satisfying when rule of cool slots into a feasibly biological explanation -- I can picture those tusks being very useful in meal processing, prying apart armor like a crowbar. It all adds up since the dragon's meals are rare, it needs to eat every bit of the kill like a crocodile. Plus, it's flightless after so there's not a downside to eating too much. Overall it seems like Kinsbane would have a modified metabolism, mostly running on low power mode, and spiking for brief jolts during the rare dragon-hunt. Bravo justifying the biological necessity for epic monster tusks - this one is a triumph.

In terms of the Great Kinsbane being either edgy or immaculate, I'd have to say it's the latter. It has those fantastic defenses for the best of reasons! Fantastic job again man!!

That feed on Gentle filter feeders such as whales and giant squid But in all serious I could see the kins bane also hunting for whales or scavenging of beaches for sea carrien

If I had a nickel for every time a world building project had a really spiky really powerful dragon that used it's brute strength to hunt other dragons, I'd have two nickels, wich isn't a lot, but it's wierd it happened twice
Difference is, the Great Kinsbane is still capable of releasing fiery breath with a pretty decent quantity of it, as in still having elemental ailment in Monster Hunter perspective. It's just that many dragons in Dragonslayer Codex are resistant to fire based attacks to a certain degree, so the quickest way to take them down is by using pure brute strength and verocity to match.
I love the unique design. It makes the Kinsbane memorable in a sea of dragon clones. All of your designs are very unique. What core rules what you use to run a game in this world?
Legends say that if you rearrange Sawyer Lee like an anagram you get Slayer Wee. Who is this character? What do they do? Are they affiliated to any of the current people's of the Codex's world? THE PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW
The mountain range of the caldera is home to many species of dragons, the dragons here are common, but there is one species that dwarfs them all. He is a "Great Kinsbane" 1:042:57 1300 meters from wingtip to wingtip with a body bigger than any theropod dinosaur, he is the undisputed King of the Skies. This giant is over 40 years old. Most of his life has been spent wandering the continents in search of food. But every year there is a dramatic interruption in his nomadic lifestyle, It will soon be time to find a mate.
The way we consider dragons is kinda odd, because it would be absurd to call a hawk or a falcon a cannible/kin-eater when they hunt smaller birds, but a dragon eating another dragon, despite there being much greater differences between the two, we might.
Kinsbane is such a great name and can have many meanings like: dragon's bane, giant's bane (our kin), a kings bane (young or scarred individuals), or like kingsnakes and king cobras because dracophagy (I always read it as kingsbane). Also, how would a fight go between a gunning hullbreaker and a starving kinsbane of similar size go?
I feel like you could also reason the kinsbane also has defensive features to trick other, less knowledgeable dragons into thinking it has less compacity to fight back, thus bringing it's prey right to it.
14:50, this is actually familiar behaviour to caecilians mothers feeding their children their skin and also regrowing that skin... a nice touch there since caecilians are already scary as amphibians...

Peak dragon, my all time favourite of the setting. Quick question, excluding sea dragons(where the kinsbane do poorly) are there any dragons that a fully grown and experienced kinsbane can't attack?(Like on average who wins between a kinsbane and an hullbreaker?)
I am broke af, but today, I start saving so I can buy this book day 1. As an aspiring writer, this is absolute FIRE, I will watch more of your videos, this is just so amazing. The art, the concepts, the execution. In my childhood one of the books that left the biggest impact in me was a dragon encyclopedia that explained the dragons of different mythologies. This is a dream come true, keep working on it, I will watch every single update.
All the time i always remembered the name of this cool dragon as kinGsbane... Now i know better, but this dragon is still king - as long as he is not in the vicinity of his chad-cousin. Hehehe. I find it pretty interesting how you were (again like with other of your beasts) able to find a balance between the "rule of cool" and speculative evolution in creating the Kinsbane. It is also fascinating seeing such a symbiosis between dragons and humans.
I hope to hell my dnd party don’t watch this cause I came up with Caldera for my campaign and it’s word for word identical. Lush forest, dormant super volcano, tons of dragons… I literally called it Caldera too!
This one is my favorite now, partually because of cool design, and partually because of some similarities with dragon-eating dragons from my own setting (high need for some mineral components that he can get from other dragons easiest way, being kinda like a guardian figure in ecosystem for small animals and sapients)
Id imagine so the hullbreaker looks to be taller than the kinsbane and possibly more bulky. They could be stronger considering their lifestyle of punching ice.
I wanna know more about Dragon eggs!! In the diagram Lee made, it looks like they develop more iron sub-shells at the yolk develops into a fetal Dragon. I would think they'd start with more sub-shells and lose them over time, maybe as the fetus absorbs the iron. But I can imagine also that as the fetal dragon grows bigger & stronger the egg might need to grow stronger to prevent premature hatchings! I'm MF'ing fascinated 😂
Great stuff. Though i would personally design this thing to grow bigger spines on more places of it's body and in weirder shapes. Similar to Human bones shattering under great stress to prevent further tissue damage. It would help this dragon on it's mountain-side wrestling endevors.
All your videos give me monster hunter vibes, but this is probably the best example of that. The way that dragon preys on other species of dragons also reminds me a bit of the vampires from blindsight. Idk if either of those were an inspiration but I sure love that this is the atmosphere we're going with
Yeah there’s definitely a parallel with the big almost fantastical creatures explained in a sort of plausible way/ addition of dragon slayers but I do strive to make this it’s own thing
Woohoo I was looking forward to it. I like the idea of it's hunting. Because we talked about suplexing dragons I'm still thinking of wrestling now. So from the top rope RKOing a dragon. Loved this idea of people honoring the dragon that fights other dragons. Monster hunter has a couple similar monsters like this. Espaines comes to mind the sleeping rose one. Love it another great video.
I can imagine a clash between the Hullbreaker and the Kinsbane would shatter the earth and rattle the sky, I can see these titans dripping with blood staring each other down know the next strike will be the last
Was about to say the same the thing and honestly i feel like it could be some pretty good world building a Kingsbane pushed out its habitat by a stronger adult ends up in Arctic and tries to hunt a Hullbreaker and it results in this clash that gets turned into a religious story for the hinterman and goes down in his. The Grey King of the Mountains and The Silver God of the Glaciers would be fire asf
From what I understand that creature is an active harm to its ecosystem, where I make a point about the Kinsbane being part of a very elaborate balance
Dragon Hunters and Knights: "There must be a dragon that can stand up to the Great Kinsbane, right?" HullBreaker: Here I am,sorry for the waiting( like anime or manga :) )...when can I start with the "MOST STRONG (and only and unique in doing) Iron Fist of the draconic kind"?
First time I got a good look at the map, just to find out is like a re-mixed Planetos, which is hilarious! As a fellow lover of fantasy cartography, it is brilliant.
Viva & Cirrus have to watch their back when they're ventured into the mountain region of the caldera and always keep a lookout for the Great Kinsbane. The Apex Dragon predator of the sky.
They technically should but they’re shorter as to better convey the grappling/wrestling vibe he’s to give off. I aim for speculative realism but push the boundaries of reality at its edges to weave the narrative I’m writing
the image at 17:00 of the Hullbreaker annihilating a Kinsbane is one of the most epic paintings I've ever seen.
It reminds me of monster hunter turf war art

I hope to hell my dnd party don’t watch this cause I came up with Caldera for my campaign and it’s word for word identical. Lush forest, dormant super volcano, tons of dragons… I literally called it Caldera too!
Ah yes the good ol timed method of making Dragonhunters rely on pure force instead of gimmicks, lol
I don't know if you take requests or stuff like that, but will there be a video on the Holdtaker?
There will!
@@sawyerleeart Hooray!
This one is my favorite now, partually because of cool design, and partually because of some similarities with dragon-eating dragons from my own setting (high need for some mineral components that he can get from other dragons easiest way, being kinda like a guardian figure in ecosystem for small animals and sapients)
Damn, the Hullbreaker can stand up to them? That's awesome
Id imagine so the hullbreaker looks to be taller than the kinsbane and possibly more bulky. They could be stronger considering their lifestyle of punching ice.
Since this planet is Earth-like in terms of animal groups, were dinosaurs or pterosaurs ever a thing here?
I'd like a dnd setting based on your work.
Two questions:
1) Do the land bound drakes exist?
2) Do natural dragon hybrids exist? Sort of like pizzly bears
Or ligers! or Narlugas!
@@NakedAvanger narlugas yes, ligers not really
I’ve got land based dragons yes, and some very closely related dragons can hybridize
Something I think would be cool to see in the codex would a group of wingless dragons, maybe therapod-like in nature. Would they be able to survive?
it would be so cool to have a playlist with all these videos
The ruined city of hence story was great. You should make a book with just dragon centered stories alone as well
I plan to after the first codex guides are out!
Great stuff. Though i would personally design this thing to grow bigger spines on more places of it's body and in weirder shapes. Similar to Human bones shattering under great stress to prevent further tissue damage. It would help this dragon on it's mountain-side wrestling endevors.
Nergigante would be proud.
Doing the Holdtaker next would be awesome.
@@sawyerleeart yeah it's the same genre but they're distinctly different
cant wait for the actual dragonslayer codex book definetely would preorder
Woohoo I was looking forward to it. I like the idea of it's hunting. Because we talked about suplexing dragons I'm still thinking of wrestling now. So from the top rope RKOing a dragon. Loved this idea of people honoring the dragon that fights other dragons. Monster hunter has a couple similar monsters like this. Espaines comes to mind the sleeping rose one. Love it another great video.
The baby kinsbane are a sort of pug cute kinda like they are gnarly but I would still keep it as a pet lol
@@jambug5598 and then a Giant joins the fray of the two.
@@Raiders989 Just realized it’s basically the Ukanlos and Akantor typa story but honestly i think it’s cool either way
The flagship of the Dragonslayer Codex
Starting the video now but I whoud definitely pet one
I actually made a dragon inspired by the kinsbane(head shape and diet to be specific)
I like you already
This is one of my favorite dragons.
It's like Deviljho, with wings
From what I understand that creature is an active harm to its ecosystem, where I make a point about the Kinsbane being part of a very elaborate balance
Is Kinsbane a proactive hunter, or does it use ambush strategies?
@@CoronaMagewatch the video lad
It's more like a DnD version of Nergigante
I can’t wait for the holdtaker and Sunscourge videos! I hope you have them in the works
Dragon Hunters and Knights:
"There must be a dragon that can stand up to the Great Kinsbane, right?"
HullBreaker:
Here I am,sorry for the waiting( like anime or manga :) )...when can I start with the "MOST STRONG (and only and unique in doing) Iron Fist of the draconic kind"?
It's neat to see a kingsnake type dragon.
I'm here for it, whatever this becomes; keep it up, world-building & sponsors...
First time I got a good look at the map, just to find out is like a re-mixed Planetos, which is hilarious! As a fellow lover of fantasy cartography, it is brilliant.
Hullbreaker taking no shit.
if Hullbreaker somehow managed to cross into other Continent. 💀💀
These guys are liked giants carnívoros capybaras
I want to explore this world so bad and this is by far my favorite Dragon
gosh I want to use these for dnd so bad, I love their designs they are AMAZING
Viva & Cirrus have to watch their back when they're ventured into the mountain region of the caldera and always keep a lookout for the Great Kinsbane. The Apex Dragon predator of the sky.
AAYYYYYY MY FAVOURITE DRAGON GETS A VIDEO!!
(Erm **snort** should the wings be larger/longer since it’s a big animal)
They technically should but they’re shorter as to better convey the grappling/wrestling vibe he’s to give off. I aim for speculative realism but push the boundaries of reality at its edges to weave the narrative I’m writing
@@sawyerleeartalright! Still a awesome dragon either way and thanks for making these cool vids
