Dang Son what a good idea! Somebody out there is always thinking! I'm just glad you share your ideas with us. Ya know with that deep curved end, they could be easily used for Railroad spike tongs. thanks again!
Nice, I reshaped one pair of these as my first tongs, quenched them and cracked them up pretty good. Will probably do some welding to convert them as suggested. Thanks.
That is way too cool My wife and I were at a flea market and I picked up two pair of nippers I was thinking on how to do this and there you were Thanks so much When I get done I will ship you a picture Thanks again Edward Martin
Nice one Tim, the fabricated version is defiantly a winner! Quick, simple and for a newby the best way to get started! I know this is a few years old, just found it, keep forging Tim, hope to annoy you on live stream sometime soon!
this was actually one of the 1st things we tried to make when we started a year ago, had a pair of nipper laying around for years. Was never able to get them to work very well, nice to see someone show us all how.
This was an awesome video. I saw someone use nippers to hold the head of the spike by forging. I like these options. Thanks for the video. Love your work.
Man oh man.....this is EXACTLY what I've been looking for!!! Just getting started in Blacksmithing (Old Dog learning new tricks) and can't find Tongs anywhere around me? Plenty of good Horse nippers though!!! THANKS!!!
Great ideas Tim - I have an old pair of nippers and have been thinking about what to do with them - I sure like your second idea.....Thanks for sharing; Booyah!
Again Tim things outside the box and around the corner. great idea there Tim, I've been thinking about using nippers also but didn't see that angle of grinder ajustment with a dash of hot glue gun. thanks again for sharing your experience and I call it tricks of the trade. awaiting your next video. I'll try to get those Damascus knives in the mail to you, life has been a handful these past two months. again thank you for sharing...!!!!!! Roger (Raymond WA.)
Thank you Tim Awesome stuff Greetings from Durban. South Africa....I'm hooked on all things metal. Just found a few. nippers at the flea markets...i'm getting there! Got Bless Regards Raj
Good job. I like the Fab tongs. A word to the wise. Folks have found out you can do something with nippers. What you one could get for a few dollars? Now they want your finished tong prices. That's not right.
The first set I ever tried to do, blew apart/broke. In hindsight, they were drop forged, which was a big problem. I should have annealed/normalised them before trying to forge them to shape. Thanks Tim!
My first thought was those nippers could be reground so they have a single bevel to the outside making them perfect flush nail pullers. I do not believe anyone makes anything but short plier length versions in today's world and those with a double bevel which makes them useless. It would be great to have a set with good long handles for leverage. Not being in horse country I haven't run across said nippers. Happy New Year. Take care. Doug
The fabricated pair are great! If you had to buy the nippers new, the ultra-cheap ones would probably work *BETTER* in this application, because they would most likely be lower carbon. And I expect they would work on RR spikes too.
Definitely the second set! Work smarter not longer!!! Would those work for the railroad spikes? With the horse clippers being $2, you could weld up an array of different sizes of tongs and then slowly pick up your long term tongs!! Amazing info once again!!! Did you get the package that I sent you bud? It says that it was delivered! Do whatever you wish with the wood I sent! I did find someone who has a lathe that has finished the rounded part where the locking mechanism is. Have you shipped it out? Or have the dimensions to the handles? Take Care Bud!
I have a pair like the second set I was trying to take the first route with them, but the way they are designed I couldn't get it to work... this was before I watched this video.
Both good ideas to me but can see why you like the second set. More options to customise for a job. Great show Tim 😀 Anthony Kent HAWK woodlore knives UK
Very good. I would happily watch for a full half hour.
Love watching you hammer glowing hot steel, but those fabricated tongs was genious.
As usual you make smithing tools easy to make for the beginner, we appreciate that very much, Thank you.

I have always used hoof nippers for a hot cut. You just heat you metal, grab where you want cut with the nippers and hammer them closed
Thank you for your information it was kool
Glad you liked it!

this was actually one of the 1st things we tried to make when we started a year ago, had a pair of nipper laying around for years. Was never able to get them to work very well, nice to see someone show us all how.
Thanks for the share of knowledge, this is what I need 🙇🏿

That is going to help a lot of new people out that can weld ,great video man and thank you for sharing
I have never seen that second part with the fabricated/welded bit on the front. That's a great idea.
Another great video from the big dog, great idea,Thanks for sharing
Great Idea with the fabricated set I have a bucket full of old nippers I was wondering how to reuse these. Thanks for all your wisdom....
Man oh man.....this is EXACTLY what I've been looking for!!! Just getting started in Blacksmithing (Old Dog learning new tricks) and can't find Tongs anywhere around me? Plenty of good Horse nippers though!!! THANKS!!!
I just made a set last night using the hoof nippers, super quick and should work great, thanks again

Very nicely done. Like the fabricated ones. Now I will have a couple of sets of tongs to get started.
Looks so easy... someday i try to make this type of tongs for myself. Thanks for the idea!
Good job. I like the Fab tongs. A word to the wise. Folks have found out you can do something with nippers. What you one could get for a few dollars? Now they want your finished tong prices. That's not right.
Always good info on all of your videos! Keep up the good work
My god that second option is GENIUS!!!!
i agree with roy the second is way easier and really you can weld box jaws or any other kind you can imagine thank you so much tim God bless
Great video. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
The first set I ever tried to do, blew apart/broke. In hindsight, they were drop forged, which was a big problem. I should have annealed/normalised them before trying to forge them to shape. Thanks Tim!
Great idea..flea market here I come..lol
Loved the fabricated pair! I see these nippers all the time...so I'm definitely going to pick up some pairs now
Nice tim so cool the second ones 😉
Found six sets of these nipps in various antique stores around me and I now know what to do with them .....thanks
Nice job Tim 😎
Very cool 😎

Love the second pair the best wish I would have seen this before I bought 2 pair. Lol
Good one Tim!
now that is a smart idea!!
that last set is cool, hobby use those would last forever, given you know how to weld.
Good information thanks
You did exactly what I thought . Weld Angle to them.
cool
Great job Tim....I think the second version is the way to go.
Noticed all the right handed hammering....I take it the recovery is going well?
How long do the Fabrication tongs need to be Normalized to finish them??
I appreciate you suggestion!
Thank you, great job
You should do a video building a propane forge on a budget
While I"m building my forge, I might just visit our farrier supply shop and get some used nippers for the fabrication method. Thank you.

Could you not have normalized or annealed, the first set before reforming them? I like the idea on the second pair!
Awesome the fabricated one that's a great idea
Omg this helped me out sooooo much
Yea i made a nice pair of tongs out of em, quenched (Wasnt thinking) then went to adjust them cold......
It broke in half.
Second, Great..
Will you be doing tong blanks anymore good video tim
Harbor Freight has nippers for about 10 bucks. Perfect for this type of tong.
How long do we need to make the jaws outside the nippers??? Your idea has cought on. Used nippers have gone up. I once got them for 2or3$ now ten $...
I have a pair like the second set I was trying to take the first route with them, but the way they are designed I couldn't get it to work... this was before I watched this video.
You can quench in oil like Roy does on his channel.
Genius.
4:15 - Pacman !
Hmm kinda wants to forge them but the welded ones almost look better
Both good ideas to me but can see why you like the second set. More options to customise for a job. Great show Tim 😀 Anthony Kent HAWK woodlore knives UK
dang it, i don't have a welder
Get on Forged in Fire on tv... maybe you already have I have not seen every episode...

The prices now have jumped. To many people see vidioe like this? And they want to hit gold selling them.
