Be careful if you have ants along with the aphids. The ants have a symbiotic relationship with the aphids. They protect the aphids from their natural predators and the aphids give the ants all the honeydew they can eat. Ants will kill the ladybugs the first night to protect the aphids. If you have ants too, you need to address the ant issue before you can address the aphids.
Yes! I had ants and aphids in my garden box. First, I treated the ants with borax and sugar...works every time! But, I had to remove most of my plantings. There were millions of aphids and since my box sits on a rooftop with 30 other garden boxes, was concerned that the aphids would spread to my neighbor's boxes. So after removing my plants, I treated the soil with a vinegar/soap solution until I saw no more aphids. Now, in my do over planting, I am trying to find aphid resistant plants to put in.
Freaking "raw hide" western....little buggers were bringing aphids as fast as I killed em...... now put out borax solution around growing areas too keep ants out. Get free ladybugs and praying Manti, hate pesticides, only as last resort.
Mother nature will send earth to take care of the problem, she's amazing. To keep the lady bugs around, build them a shelter they can go to at night. In elementary they taught us how to make lady bug shelters out of emty tissue paper rolls SUPER EASY, hang them near the area you want to keep them around. The more you care and upkeep their shelter the more will come and eventually they'll call it their home and start to breed, this will be the forever home for some, with more coming back the next year. I just build a couple of shelters, but I used old dried up hollow tree trunks, they look more natural and beautifully blend in with the garden... plus it had more crevices for them to safely lay their eggs. Don't forget to smear honey in the shelter... once they've eaten all the aphids they'll leave looking for more food, but if you provide them the food and water they'll stick around. This might also attract honey bees, a plus for a veggie garden if you ask me... don't worry they both get along well.
I liked when you took them out of the refrigerator and they were asleep. You then started whispering as if you were trying not to wake them up. Very interesting video ,thanks.
Awesome video! I like how you were whispering as if you were going to wake the lady bugs from sleeping. I’m going to try this on my pepper plants. Thanks!
I ordered 5000 lady bugs and even bought a little house for them put them out exactly as they said even sprinkled, honey and water over the leaves first. I haven’t seen a lady bug sense
I had gotten a tree in a tub off my friend she was throwing it out , when I got it home I noticed it was full of aphids ,I tried various spays ,made up my own concoction nothing seemed to work ,then I decided to plant some cloves of garlic in the tub and hey presto my tree of has been aphid free for weeks with a lot of new growth !

Thank you so much for this video. My indoor jalapeño pepper plant is covered in aphids. I only have one tiny pepper less than the size of my thumb growing. Im so sad. This was my first attempt at gardening and it has not worked out so well. Thank you for the information.
Thanks! Funny timing- I'm actually releasing my second video this week. Hopefully I can make them faster in the future but we had our first child last year and I just don't have as much time as I'd like :)
This was my first season with a big aphid problem. Tried many things with multiple treatments like hand squish, spray off, a few different insecticidal soaps/oils, DE etc. but same as you, the aphids just came back. Did not try the ladybugs but will try that next season at first sign of aphids. You also had a good enough environment for the lady where enough of them stuck around which is great. Thanks for the video and sharing your experience.
Hi, Some people say mix dish washing liquid with water and spray on plant as necessary. Being trying it for couple of days and Aphids seems to be staying off my plants.
Last year, I bought a veritable army of aphid eating ladybugs and lacewings for reducing a much more minor infestation. Like a real army, they left their barracks in search of enemy aphids, presumably eating them right up. I was tickled pink. The only problem was it was an army with NO General to bark orders, issue commands and direct troops. And so without a General, they all took flight (rather immediately) for the great beyond in search of aphids, leaving my small aphid infested garden plants without protection. I hope all my neighbors are now happy with their aphid-less gardens.
Need to build a shelter for ladybugs to stay. Wetted paper towel provides hydration to the ladybugs, shades for hot sunny days. Otherwise, they will fly off.
If you spray the pepper plant with just a water sprinkler for 2-3 days in a row you interrupt their life cycle and your problem. The aphids can not crawl back on the plant once they are rinsed off. I grow 150-200 pepper plants a year and when I start to see them I break out the spray nozzle for my hose.
@@hollybishop2095 you have to make sure and get all the underside of the leaves. I have 1/2 acre garden and it always seems like they start on my pepper plants so I watch them closely plus if you see ants in the garden that’s a good sign that aphids are around. The ants carry them around from plant to plant so they can make more “honeydew “ which feeds the ants.
yellow sticky gnats catch fungus gnats not aphids. Ladybugs are cool, if you can get them to stay. Glad it worked for you though. You can also mix 1 tsp high quality neem oil (like dr adorable) with 1tsp of dr bronners peppermint castle soap with 1 quart water in a spray bottle. The soap is an emulsifier and allows the oil to mix with the water, plus the peppermint is also highly deterrent. The neem oil will make the aphiids feel "full" and stop eating, starve and die. Additionally the jet from your sprayer will remove them form the plant and the neem oil/peppermint spray will continue to deter. I also use this spray for wasps, my tomatoes, my lettuces and pretty much everything on an as needed basis. It does leave residue, so you want to wash what you eat well, but it is very safe and organic (granted you get organic lol).
Amazing! Here in Tucson we don't get aphids on our bell peppers (unfortunately our squirrels come into my yard and eat the LEAVES), but we get aphids on our MILKWEED PLANT, this is the plant that Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on. Weird thing is those aphids don't spread to any of our other plants just stay on the milkweed plant. But I think I'll get some lady bugs too! Maybe they will help with other bug pests.
I have plants and hanging baskets with plants monarchs like. Have very sadly seen only 8 so far, their forest is mostly gone and I remember when you could see hundreds at once.
The nature did it for me. I had two bell pepper plants overwintered indoor. Both were quickly overrun by aphids once they were indoor. One died. One was barely alive by the time it was warm enough outside (Michigan here). Just a week after I moved the barely alive bell pepper outside, aphids were all gone. It was the wind, rain, and cold nights did the trick. I believe your cover actually helped aphids by protecting them from the nature. Just like what happened to my peppers after I moved them indoor. My pepper plants outdoor never had such problem.
What I did is made a half and half mixture of dawn dish soap and water then sprayed the plants. It clogs their spiracles which is their respiratory organs. Basically suffocates them and the occasional ant trying to farm em
Thank you so much for this. I'm having aphid issues with my Sichuan pepper plant. I had read about lady bugs but this video gives me hope. Will definitely get my hands on some lady bugs and try it out!
Organic insecticidal soap knocked them out for me in about a week. I'd have loved to use this method but idk how my girl would feel about me releasing bugs in the house 😓
Ladybugs are effective, but they can fly away. Ants are far more effective at aphid removal. I started planting giant sunflowers around my gardens, and found that the ants will farm aphids exclusively on the sunflower plants. All my other food-bearing plants were suddenly free from both aphid AND ant damage. When the sunflower leaf gets too damaged I just remove it. Sunflowers are really hardy and can take a lot of damage. I still get huge seed production.

Ive actually been over feeding my plants expensive amendments on purpose, I then collect all the aphids the big ones just fall off. I fry em up in coconut oil and enjoy them like pine nuts. Very sweet treat!
One more trick for you. Wash/knock the aphids off the plants. Put a ring of high quality (read:sticky) duct tape around the base of each plant, sticky side out and touching the ground all around its base. As the aphids try to climb back up they get stuck on the tape. Works really well then every time you’re back near the plants all you need to do is give them a good shake and the aphid population will never get going to the point it’ll worry you.

How I got rid of my aphids off my pepper plants is take them out of the greenhouse. Put them in the direct sun heat and wind aphids do not like this, they all died

If you plan to use lady bugs or what most companies are selling now; asian lady beatles, you better understand what you are likely getting yourself into: Asian lady beatles look very much like American lady bugs, but they are not the same. Asian lady beatles are an invasive species that will out compete true lady bugs. They also like to over-winter (by the thousands) in homes so, look forward to a massive infestation that will plague your home all winter. They can make dogs and cats sick and also are able to bite humans. And yes, they will return every fall to over-winter in your home.
Your pepper was stressed out and couldn’t do photosynthesis properly. That’s the reason the aphids were latching on the plant. My first guess is your soil had too much nitrogen. Second guess is the pH of your soil wasn’t suitable for pepper. Also I would prune off all the branches at the bottom, so the plants have better airflow. Lastly, soapy water works on killing aphids. Spray it thoroughly on the plant for three consecutive days. Small aphid infestation will die off completely.
Be careful if you have ants along with the aphids. The ants have a symbiotic relationship with the aphids. They protect the aphids from their natural predators and the aphids give the ants all the honeydew they can eat. Ants will kill the ladybugs the first night to protect the aphids. Cool video dude
If you plan to use lady bugs or what most companies are selling now; asian lady beatles, you better understand what you are likely getting yourself into:
Asian lady beatles look very much like American lady bugs, but they are not the same.
Have you successfully done the soapy water method?
