@Rafael The version of Teenagers From Mars that I first heard and became the "definitive" version for me was from Collection 1, which I think is this version in her video. The Static Age version is more polished, but slightly too even-tempo to my ears. I love the rawness more of the Collection version.
Dead Kennedys were an influence on System of a Down despite the genre difference especially the satirical lyrics and kind of insane vocals. I would have picked Holiday in Cambodia instead of this song.
Kira, you are exactly right about the lyric on "Kill The Poor". The DKs love to be ironic and sarcastic to make fun of or criticize certain groups, like hypocritical people and the Military Industrial Complex and rich assholes, etc. They also make fun of stupid kids being idiots (listen to "Stealing People's Mail", for instance). Great stuff! Listen to some more DKs, to give yourself a wider perspective on their songs. They are very talented players.
Yes I recommend more DK because they're so provocative but also Educational! The singer named himself Biafra, which was a locale of a massacre that most people (including me) don't know about. I saw him speak about the corrupt evil system for 5 hours once! Which is too long but I am a seeker of knowledge and the US media fills us with disinformation. Biafra is a great American educator!
some of the non-super-political songs were penned by short lived second guitarist 6025. Possibly "Kill" but definitely "Forward to Death" "Insight" "Stealing Peoples Mail" or "Funland at the Beach"
IIRC "Stealing People's Mail" was written about the FBI intercepting Jello Biafra's mail due to his political views. That may still qualify as stupid kids.
@@radicaladz not to pick holes but Magazine was formed by Devoto. Pete Shelley stayed with Buzzcocks and became the main singer. One could argue they did share the writing of the riff Shot by both Sides however as the same riff is used on Lipstick b side to Promises by Buzzcocks. Magazine good shout out though. John Mc geogh was a phenomenal guitarist especially in the post punk vein
X-Ray Spex is the most underrated band in rock history. The whole album of Germfree Adolescents is phenomenal, but the track Art-I-Ficial is their pinnacle IMHO.
Dead Boys, New York Dolls, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, The Dickies, The Exploited, GBH, are all classics that have somewhat different sounds. Keep up the reactions. Cheers
Their album Germ Free Adolescents is a classic. The lead singer Poly Styrene has a voice to just belts out power. Check out The Day the World Turned Dayglo.
I was in my early teens in the late 70's, so Punk was my type of music (and still is to some degree 40+ years later). Poly Styrene (the singer with X-Ray Spex) was (in my opinion at least) a pioneer we sadly lost too soon. I remember God Save The Queen being banned, although that happened with a lot of the Sex Pistols music. I still occasionally listen to Dead Kennedys and Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables is still one of my favourite albums.
Next punk video you do MUST include one of the most important and influential punk bands ever, the DESCENDENTS. They had/still have a totally different approach mixing punk with their surf sound background while writing lyrics about girls, coffee or fishing. Milo, the singer, is a scientist and had to choose between his career as a musican and life dedicated to science which he ultimately did but came back many years later. So I would recommend their debut album "MILO GOES TO COLLEGE, for many one of the best punk albums of all time. Listen to classics like "Suburban Home", "Bikeage" or one of my all time favourites "Hope". Without the Descendents, there wouldn't have been bands like NOFX, Green Day, Blink 182 or other big names of the genre. They're simply my most favourite punk band of all time and I'm so happy they still play shows and release great records. I even named my little son Milo because of them. I'm sure you will like them.
Fantastic reaction to "Oh Bondage Up Yours"! The Band, led by Poly were kids!! 16, 17 yr old kids, and the whole album is KILLER!! You must dig deeper!!
I love the "happy" sound of the Misfits while delivering some really bizarre lyrics - "Skulls" is a good example for sure. Well...a lot of them are :-D
Please react to Stiff Little Fingers. A vital but oft overlooked first wave punk band from Belfast, Northern Ireland. So many great songs to choose from, from kids basically growing up in a war zone. Alternative Ulster and Suspect Device are probably their best known tracks, but if I had to suggest just one song, it would probably be Tin Soldiers.
I was JUST listening to X-Ray Spex earlier today. They're phenomenal! Been listening to them for almost 20 years now! Also, you said Buzzcocks were a little more lowkey. They definitely are. They're one of the original progenitors of what we now call Pop Punk. Without them, we probably wouldn't have gotten Descendents, Green Day, or Blink 182 as we know them. All praise be to the Buzzcocks on high.
Dead Kennedy’s have a lot of dark songs as well. I highly recommend their songs, “California Uber Alles” and “Police Truck” great doomsday like tone to them.
"It's a song made for my tastes in music. It is loud. It is strong in delivery. Her voice is killer. It has so much emotion to it. You can tell she's mad." Why did she ever think she wouldn't like metal. She just described it lol :D
The Pistols track. Did you notice there's no chorus? Also, when Lydon says "made you a moron", he's saying made the listener a moron. He's not calling the Queen a moron, which was what the UK press thought at the time.
THE DKs!!! I love the Dead Kennedys! I saw them in concert, in Washington D.C., in 1982. They played with Minor Threat, among others, and it was the wildest concert I've ever been to in my life! They Mosh pit was like...they weren't people anymore but a swarm of angry bees! Haha! I was watching from the balcony section and it was like, "nope, I'm not going in there!" Haha! But the band was awesome. The gig was also almost shut down because of Fire Code violations so all the fans had a sit-down protest! Jello Biafra, the lead singer of the DKs, had to come out and talk to the crowd to keep us cool/calm (so we would riot or anything) and they ended up giving the band 45 minutes to jam!! It was awesome! You should do "Drug Me" by the Dead Kennedys! It will blow you away!
Some more punk rock classics from bands you didn't check out in any video by now: The Only Ones - Another Girl Another Planet The Undertones - Teenage Kicks Dead Boys - Sonic Reducer Stiff Little Fingers - Alternative Ulster UK Subs - Stranglehold Generation X - Ready Steady Go Eddie & the Hot Rods - Do Anything You Wanna Do Sham 69 - If The Kids Are United Fugazi - Waiting Room Hüsker Dü - I Don't Want to Know If You Are Lonely Wreckless Eric - Whole Wide World The Adverts - Gary Gilmore's Eyes The Stranglers - No More Heroes The Saints - Stranded Skids - The Saints Are Coming The Heartbreakers - Born to Lose Richard Hell and the Voidoids - Blank Generation The Vibrators - Baby Baby
Yeah you picked like the one outlier in Dead Kennedys entire catalogue. I really really think California Uber Alles should be their redemption song. It's dark and menacing and sounds very different from just about any other punk band.
This Could Be Anywhere is pretty dark. Government Flu has a somewhat menacing tone to it too but I'd say a majority of their "darker" sounding stuff is on Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables
Honestly, DK is all about juxtaposition, dark lyrics, over like surf, and western movies. I really don't think they're dark musically at all. I mean, of course there are things like I am The Owl, or Soup is Good Food.
That was a good selection of songs for a punk newbie to react to. I'm glad X Ray Spex were included because they're often overlooked. Other X Ray Spex songs that are well worth checking out are "Identity", "The day the world turned dayglo" and "Germ free adolescence".
That Entire Sex Pistols record is Golden Era Punk. All great songs. Vocals guitar. Drums,,Great Energy by you girl ✔ ✅ Loving your fun cute resctions. Reliving my punk years eith you!!! KIRA Rocks....
Fun stuff! We wore out that Pistols album in college, along with prog, hard bob and classical (we were music majors and were all over the place). Another band to check out is Johnny Rotten's band after the Sex Pistols, called Public Image Ltd. (I'd go for Annalisa or Albatross).
I second checking out Public Image, I know you're into post punk stuff and I think that's Johnny's better and more interesting band. Pistols were fine but Johnny was REALLY itching to play something weirder
I was already into punk but the first time I heard Dead Kennedys (it was Kill the Poor too because it's the first song on the album), it totally blew my mind and 20+ years later, they're still one of my favourite bands.
I was 15 in 77 and the whirlwind that was British Punk saved my life as an out of control teenager in a kids home I knew the mixed up emotions and anger I felt were perfectly normal and I thrived in the music and the dingy venues that sprang up everywhere Yea 77 to 79 were insane
For your next Punk Rock video consider "You got my number" by the Undertones, "Waiting Room" by Fugazi, and last but not least "My Right" by Screeching Weasel
I can't tell you how healing it is for this 50yo scenosaur to watch a young'un in the throes of the same rush I got when I first heard God Save The Queen in 1984. :D
Highly recommend for pt. 3: Dead Boys - What Love Is or All This and More Rudimentary Peni - The Cloud Song or Mice Race Germs - Lexicon Devil or No God Dickies - Gigantor or Infidel Zombie GBH - Time Bomb or Knife Edge Johnny Thunders - You Can't Put Your Arms 'Round a Memory or All By Myself Crass - Securicor or Bata Motel
Really enjoyed this video, Kira. I take the liberty to recommend some more bands if you're into for a third punk part. This is my underground punk (early hardcore and anarcho) picks: Minor Threat - 'Salad Days' Crass - 'Do They Owe Us A Living' The Ex - 'The Sky Is Blue Again'
Cool to see you getting to more punk! As much as I love metal (and that is a lot) and all it's virtuosity, punk (but definitely not pop-punk) with it's pure passion and rough edges, has a special place in my heart. If you want some darker Dead Kennedys, try Moon Over Marin, off Plastic Surgery Disasters. It's may favourite song by them.
Super glad you reacted to Dead Kennedys - they're my favourite band of all time and you're really right about the lyricism and irony of the song. DK's entire schtick is irony, sarcasm and very dry humour. Their vocalist Jello Biafra is a genius lyricist. If you're looking for darker songs by them they have plenty, I suggest their song Holiday in Cambodia. It's probably their most famous track in the mainstream, and is very dark. It's about the Cambodian dictatorship of the Khmer Rouge and the arrogance of western "charity" relief. Forest Fire is another good song from their next album that's also on the darker side. Either way they're such a great band, they drew influence from so many genres and styles of music that their entire catalog is really essential listening because they did so much in such a short period of time.
I was never really into punk but the misfits is still one of my favorite all time bands! Especially when Glenn Danzig fronted them he's got a wide vocal range definitely should listen to more of their other songs. You should check out his solo stuff as well.
Love your fresh outlook and reaction to hearing these punk bands for the first time. I had the same reaction when I was a 15 year old kid in 1977. Still have my records and still go to gigs and I'm 61.😊
You have to love Poly Styrene! Great Vid. If you like Poly and you like dark music you would probably enjoy some of the early Siouxsie and the Banshees singles.
Love your energy towards these songs. I love when people smile so genuinely and giddily to such songs that are meant to be angry and visceral. Seeing a young girl like you relate to songs as old as the 1970's is really a breath of fresh air. Subscribed.
Great reaction. Managed to finally see the Pistols at the 30th anniversary of Never Mind The Bollocks at Brixton Academy in 2014. They didn't disappoint. Also managed to see The Buzzcocks in 2018 in Norwich not long before the wonderful Pete Shelley passed away. So many great pop songs. Unfortunately X-Ray Spex were not around long enough for me to see, but who can forget that unmistakable voice of Poly Styrene. The Dead Kennedy's made a big impact in the UK in 1980 with great singles, inc. Holiday in Cambodia from the amazing debut album Fresh Fruit from Rotting Vegetables. Never have been able to get into The Misfits.
You were right about The Dead Kennedys song being from the point of the rich. Definitely react to their lyrics more, because they have a lot of meaning and sometimes double meanings.
If you want to more female punk ,you should definitely listen to early Siouxsie, first 2 albums ,or vice squad with Becky bondage and the slits,do an all girl punk reaction
Cock Sparrer is another interesting one, if I remember correctly they were supposed to be the big punk export but the label decided last minute to pick Sex Pistols instead. Their song "Take 'em All" is about that I assume :).
I watched both punk reaction videos, fun. Let me recommend some more for ya: Richard Hell & the Voidoids- Blank Generation. The Saints- I’m Stranded. The Runaways- Cherry Bomb. X- Los Angeles. The Cramps- Human Fly. The Adverts- Gary Gilmore’s Eyes. Wayne County- F*ck Off. Dead Boys- Sonic Reducer. The Germs- Forming. The Dickies- Banana Splits. Generation X- Kiss Me Deadly. Blondie- X Offender. Devo- Mongoloid. Talking Heads- Psycho Killer. Vibrators- London Girls. Bad Brains- Banned in D.C. Discharge- Fight Back. Sham 69- Lost on Highway 46. Crass- Do they Owe Us a Living? Tuff Darts- (Your Love is like) Nuclear Waste. Undertones- Teenage Kicks. Fear- I love living in the city. D.O.A.-Fucked Up Ronnie. New York Dolls- Personality Crisis. Heartbreakers- Chinese Rock.
Next you need to react to Fear - New York Is Alright, X - Telephone, Circle Jerks - World Up My Ass, Minor Threat - Straight Edge, Agent Orange - Blood Stains, and TSOL - Code Blue.... somewhere down the road you should react to the Toy Dolls! I dunno if she should delve into the anarcho- scene with Cr@ss
It was legitimately exciting to hear you reacting to these songs. I know those feels and it's why I keep coming back to punk rock after discovering these same songs. We share the same enthusiasm so I'm looking forward to more from you!
Ah! Some more California punk bands would be cool. Rancid, Operation Ivy, Descendents, Bad Religion, AFI, NOFX, Tiger Army, and The Adolescents. You already listened to Dead Kennedys but if you're going to do another song of theirs, I'd recommend Holiday in Cambodia.
@@BradMurray oh man... I don't hink those songs really represent Rancid fairly; maybe Motorcycle Ride. It would have to be Time Bomb, Fall Back Down, Poison, Roots Radicals... etc.
Stranglers: peaches, the saints: this perfect day, ruts: staring at the rude boys, oh and the anti nowhere league, siouxsie and the banshees.. All classic stuff 😉
Poly Styrene. Absolute legend. Young Black woman who was just like, "yeah, I'm going into the white male dominated zone, and you're going to have to deal with it because I'm not giving you any respect you don't earn."
I absolutely love your positivity toward punk. As an old punk myself, you’re having the exact reaction now that I did as a 12-year-old kid in 1983. Thank you for these videos!
DK has more dark sounding stuff, sometimes edging into horror like with This Could be Anywhere and Holiday in Cambodia. Listening to this first is like when people's intro to Pixies is Here Comes Your Man. Not the best song to represent their overall sound.
The algorithm led me here...and now I'm subscribed. Keep up the good work. Would be cool to see you do some more hardcore punk like Bad Brains, Sick Of It All, Gorilla Biscuits and 7 Seconds. Also, if you like X-Ray Spex now, you might also like the song New York's Alright If You Like Saxophones by the band Fear. Similar vibe. And Fear are a great band in general.
Rancid and their $70 tickets are garbage. You want real current punk, Hank Wood and the Hammerheads, Tyvek. Real deal. poppier stuff Marked Men, Radioactivity, thee Oh Sees, Jay Reatard Rancid, Inc. not so much...
Love both the punk video's you did. I must say Dead Kennedy's, and Black Flag are two of my all time favorites. DK, might be the most punk band of all time. To me they are unequalled, while all these bands are awesome, DK in my mind had they better lyrics and attitude in delivery. California Uber Allis is just a massive statement and is worth you time to check out. Black Flag is more for when you want to eff schit up, get into a mosh pit and start swinging elbows without being mad at anybody in particular. Now i want to drop a little gem on ya mate. "Crass" with a huge list of band members over many albums, different sounding songs, Quick pop up shows in odd places, this is just a crazy band of the time frame. "big hands" is one of my favorites, but if your not a fan, keep listening as every punk fan will find at least one of their songs to their liking. Hopefully one day you will do progressive punk (Cure, REM, B52's, Smiths, Pixies, They Might be Giants, Dead Milkmen, and Talking heads and bands of the sort) and a little Gem slightly off the beat here, DRI. When punk and metal meet you Get DRI- Suit and tie guy.
You should put some Australian punk in the next one. "(I'm) Stranded" by The Saints and either "Descent into the Maelstrom" or "Aloha Steve and Danno" by Radio Birdman would be good ones.
@Charles J. The first couple of albums are great forgotten punk albums. Their later albums are also great, but they are less punk and more conventional rock.
Some female punk bands/singers you might enjoy are 1) X, 2) Nina Hagen, 3) Lene Lovich, 4) The Slits, 5) Lydia Lunch, 6) Au Pairs, 7) Siouxsie and The Banshees, 8) Crass, 9) The Plasmatics, 10) Poison Girls.
I recommend The Gits, "second skin" (live song). The Gits were on the brink of making it big, but their lead singer, Mia Zapata, was raped and murdered in 1993. Joan Jett made a tribute album with the remaining members of the band called Evil Stig (thats 'Gits Live'' backwards). The police eventually convicted the SOB who killed her, and he has since died. May his name be forgotten forever. May Mia be remembered by us all. The Gits were a great Seattle punk band.
I am going to agree with the others here about your DK choice. I love this one, but there are definitely better choices. Jello Biafra takes no prisoners in his evisceration of society. Rich, poor, liberal, conservative... doesn't matter to him. If he sees it as foolish he calls it out. His new band, Guantanamo School of Medicine is okay, but the Kennedys rock! All your other picks were absolutely top notch. Still waiting for some Sham 69, New York Dolls, Dead Milkmen, or MC5. There's a ton of great stuff still out there, so keep discovering!
@@jaimemrv385 Nah, that the Pistols are the best punk rock band that ever existed. There are better ones and the Pistols were like a boyband in how they were formed.
The Pistols are posers. And Johnny Rotten is a sellout. However, the Pistols are one of the most influential bands to the Punk genre. So they deserve credit for that. But they’re nowhere near the best punk band ever.
@@starlesseyes5713 clearly u dont know anything about the pistols because they were born to fighr poser and a stupid regime in england back then, and the fact u say Jonhnny Rotten is a sellout is because u dont know a damm thing about him. He wasnt the biggest rock singer ever due to the fact he isnt a sellout
You might like “police truck” from the dead Kennedy’s. It’s got a darker tone. It’s about police officers going to accost people and beat them up while drinking on the job.
Great picks :) ..except for the Dead Kennedys song...it's more of a jokey song really than the rest of their catalog. To Drunk to F**k, California Uber Alles, Police Truck, Holiday in Cambodia or a few others would really have captured Dead Kennedys better. DK are my personal favourite punk band and I never listen to Kill the Poor :P I think it's their worst song tbh. You should really check out Post-Punk at some point! Joy Division, Wire, The Fall, Gang of Four, Siouxsie, Television, early Cure.
Btw, if you like the melodic sound of Buzzcock then try the album Singles Going Steady. It compiles all their single releases in one place, generally their more tuneful stuff. That said, all their studio albums are quite magnificent too of course.
Kira, excellent reaction and excellent tunes! If you liked X-Ray Spec, you should listen to the Pretenders from their 1979 release (1st album)! There are two kick ass songs you should hear: 1) Precious and 2) Tattooed Love Boys. Such rockers!!! Chrissie Hynde is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist/song writer and you will LOVE HER!!
@@gmantramp404, well, they’re a great band…full stop. Moreover, that first album has some KILLER tunes on it, including Punk-style rockers. While I agree, they, much later, were more radio friendly, those first 2 or 3 albums are classics!
@@kirawasareactor, by the way, the song called "The Wait" on that first Pretender's album is super fun too! it's Punk-y but it's also go Pop sensibilities too. Great stuff!! Honeyman Scott goes APE on that song!
Most people started with rock then punk then went to metal for more musicianship. I think your ready for more intense metal. Amon Amarth, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Morbid Angel, and some Thrash for fun Exodus and Testament
If there's ever a Part 3, The Wolfman recommends a few of the following, if you're going for a first impression, some that are maybe more deep cuts but are still vital to the understanding of the genre in my humble opinion:- Minor Threat - In My Eyes or Minor Threat (the self-titled song is basically their manifesto in music form) The Germs - Lexicon Devil Violet Femmes - Add It Up or Blister in the Sun Richard Hell - Blank Generation Joy Division - No Love Lost (there's a couple of different mixes of this, but either one is good) And most importantly, since you've already heard from the Godfather of Punk, Mr Iggy Pop of the Stooges, it's only fair that I recommend something from the Godmother as welll... Patti Smith - Free Money
In your previous video on the "Big Four" of Thrash, it's awesome that you took the time to pick a slower Slayer song even after doing a Patreon poll, South of Heaven is a great intro song. I think Metalheads just like watching reactions to Slayer's crazier songs. As an aside, You seemed to genuinely like the groovier and "shout-ey vocals" of Anthrax and if you could see yourself listening to similar music you might really like a lot of modern Hardcore (punk) and Crossover bands. The song structures are a mix of groove-based driving riffs with heavy breakdowns, shouted vocals and gang vocals, and a lot of energy. Hardcore is typically less complex than Metal and there is a lot of crossover between the two genres, but I find Hardcore to be catchier and easier to get into. If you're interested in music that sounds like the catchier parts of the Slayer and Anthrax songs you liked, plus a more refined sound than The Misfits or Dead Kennedys, I'd recommend checking out Hardcore on the side. Turnstile - Love Connection Rotting Out - Last Man Standing Ekulu - Unscrew My Head Dying Wish - Fragments of a Bitter Memory
I so love your reaction to Bondage up yours….I actually did hear this when I was 14 at a very straight laced school & it absolutely blew my tiny mind!!
I love these punk reactions so much. If you do a part 3 I suggest you get into the 2nd wave of punk like 1980-87 ish). I definitely recommend Bad Religion, The Descendents, and Operation Ivy(which came a couple years later)
PUNK ROCK PART 2 IS HERE!! i've already found a few gems in punk already.. will i find anymore in this video today?
Bad Brains, a reggae band that played punk for fun. Big Takeover probably.
Kira , you need to check out The Meatmen God's Bullies and The Lesbian Death Dirge. The lyrics of both songs are freaking great.
Of course [except for the Buzzcocks choice], I would have chosen different tracks, but you get the general idea, and I'm glad you're doing this.

Never heard X-Ray Spex until today. Definitely a blast to the face. Awesome!
glad you enjoyed them!
Their album Germ Free Adolescents is a classic. The lead singer Poly Styrene has a voice to just belts out power. Check out The Day the World Turned Dayglo.
Love that song from the first second when I bought it in the late seventies.
@@jediciah37 her solo album from 1980, Translucent, is criminally under appreciated. She had a beautiful voice as well as being a powerhouse of punk.
Polystrene and X-Ray Spex were a class above the rest of the bands here. So under rated.
Totally agree. The Descendents are the best!
Crass were probably the most influential punk band along with the Pistols. Stations of the Crass is probably the most unique albums I've ever heard.
Blimey! I thought I was the only person to have ever liked Crass? I had Nagasaki Nightmare on 12", (still do), and it/I drove my mates mad?
Never heard that X Ray Specs song before, that is the stuff right there! Gonna go listen to that whole album as soon as I finish watching this
my dad's best friend apparently loves the whole album! never knew!!
@@kirawasareactor It's got some real riot grrl vibes to it. Love them.
@revjim123 You wont be disappointed!
@@Kerbalf pfftt Riot girl was 15 years to late!
I saw them back in 78 in Birmingham, at the Odeon
I LOVE X RAY SPEX! I’m glad that more people are finding out about them. They’re so amazing and underrated.
They were really good and should be more well known
Barbwire love!!
Completely agree.
And without The Ramones, there would’ve been no Buzzcocks…
Dead Kennedy’s have a lot of dark songs as well. I highly recommend their songs, “California Uber Alles” and “Police Truck” great doomsday like tone to them.
"It's a song made for my tastes in music. It is loud. It is strong in delivery. Her voice is killer. It has so much emotion to it. You can tell she's mad."
Why did she ever think she wouldn't like metal. She just described it lol :D
HAHAHAHAHAAHAH legit i ask myself this question every DAMN DAY
The Pistols track. Did you notice there's no chorus? Also, when Lydon says "made you a moron", he's saying made the listener a moron. He's not calling the Queen a moron, which was what the UK press thought at the time.
Not really. Royalism made you a moron.
@@bjhellstream the lyrics a pretty self explanatory, how anybody gets it wrong is beyond me.
Some more punk rock classics from bands you didn't check out in any video by now:
The Only Ones - Another Girl Another Planet
The Undertones - Teenage Kicks
Dead Boys - Sonic Reducer
Stiff Little Fingers - Alternative Ulster
UK Subs - Stranglehold
Generation X - Ready Steady Go
Eddie & the Hot Rods - Do Anything You Wanna Do
Sham 69 - If The Kids Are United
Fugazi - Waiting Room
Hüsker Dü - I Don't Want to Know If You Are Lonely
Wreckless Eric - Whole Wide World
The Adverts - Gary Gilmore's Eyes
The Stranglers - No More Heroes
The Saints - Stranded
Skids - The Saints Are Coming
The Heartbreakers - Born to Lose
Richard Hell and the Voidoids - Blank Generation
The Vibrators - Baby Baby
Thats great list of bands and songs!
Good play list that. 😊
Yeah you picked like the one outlier in Dead Kennedys entire catalogue. I really really think California Uber Alles should be their redemption song. It's dark and menacing and sounds very different from just about any other punk band.
I would go with Holiday in Cambodia. I just love the intro to that one.
My fave DK song was always Drug Me. If Kira thought God Save The Queen was fast, that one would blow her mind!
This Could Be Anywhere is pretty dark. Government Flu has a somewhat menacing tone to it too but I'd say a majority of their "darker" sounding stuff is on Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables
I kill Children or Stealing Peoples Mail or the two songs off that album that have always done it for me ever since I was little
Honestly, DK is all about juxtaposition, dark lyrics, over like surf, and western movies.
PIL is great (specially the early stuf) but is not for everybody.
Yes! Listen to Public Image Limited (PiL). 'This Is Not A Love Song' is a great introductory song. Saw PiL live in mid eighties (88 probably).
I was already into punk but the first time I heard Dead Kennedys (it was Kill the Poor too because it's the first song on the album), it totally blew my mind and 20+ years later, they're still one of my favourite bands.
X-Ray Spex are one of the most underrated bands ever....but then I'm a sucker for punk with saxophones. Poly was a queen RIP
You need to check out Viagra Boys!!!! incredible modern punk with horns.
The self-titled album by Polish punk band Dee Facto has a couple of great sax songs on it. Check them out!
Whoa that bondage song was awesome! Never expected sax in a punk song
legit how did they pull that off so perfectly?
Listen to The Sonics for some punk with sax
I was 15 in 77 and the whirlwind that was British Punk saved my life as an out of control teenager in a kids home I knew the mixed up emotions and anger I felt were perfectly normal and I thrived in the music and the dingy venues that sprang up everywhere
Yea 77 to 79 were insane
Snap I was too. 😊
ahh well done reviewing those brilliant songs.just a note to say never lose that cheeriness,it shines like gold and is very infectious!
sex pistols and x-ray spex always make me so happy, just got my vax shot too so I'm in a good mood now ty so much for this reaction
Don't miss out on The Ruts - Babylon's Burning or Jah War (punk reggae) - both are awesome songs.
Dead Boys - What Love Is or All This and More
Rudimentary Peni - The Cloud Song or Mice Race
Germs - Lexicon Devil or No God
Dickies - Gigantor or Infidel Zombie
GBH - Time Bomb or Knife Edge
Johnny Thunders - You Can't Put Your Arms 'Round a Memory or All By Myself
Crass - Securicor or Bata Motel
Really enjoyed this video, Kira. I take the liberty to recommend some more bands if you're into for a third punk part. This is my underground punk (early hardcore and anarcho) picks:
Minor Threat - 'Salad Days'
Crass - 'Do They Owe Us A Living'
The Ex - 'The Sky Is Blue Again'
Cool to see you getting to more punk! As much as I love metal (and that is a lot) and all it's virtuosity, punk (but definitely not pop-punk) with it's pure passion and rough edges, has a special place in my heart.
If you want some darker Dead Kennedys, try Moon Over Marin, off Plastic Surgery Disasters. It's may favourite song by them.
legit i've never liked pop punk either really.. i try. especially growing up in the 2000s. but punk just does everything right everytime!
🎶 " Some People Think 🤔 , Little Girls Should Be Seen & Not Heard , But I Say ... Oh Bondage Up Yours !! 1 2 3 4 " 🎶 🎷
one of my favourite song intros ever now hahah
I was never really into punk but the misfits is still one of my favorite all time bands! Especially when Glenn Danzig fronted them he's got a wide vocal range definitely should listen to more of their other songs. You should check out his solo stuff as well.
Another GREAT reaction. Misfits are great. Anothet American band you should checkout are the Cramps. Then we can move you on to psychobilly music 😊
The singles were nothing compared to the album The Scream. The guitar playing once heard would never be forgotten.
Love your energy towards these songs. I love when people smile so genuinely and giddily to such songs that are meant to be angry and visceral. Seeing a young girl like you relate to songs as old as the 1970's is really a breath of fresh air.
Subscribed.
The lyrics in punk rock music are the best!
Soup is good food is my favorite Dead Kennedys song. It’s about humans being replaced by machines in the workplace and was ahead of its time
If you want to more female punk ,you should definitely listen to early Siouxsie, first 2 albums ,or vice squad with Becky bondage and the slits,do an all girl punk reaction
Cock Sparrer is another interesting one, if I remember correctly they were supposed to be the big punk export but the label decided last minute to pick Sex Pistols instead. Their song "Take 'em All" is about that I assume :).
I watched both punk reaction videos, fun. Let me recommend some more for ya:
Richard Hell & the Voidoids- Blank Generation.
CODE BLUE!
I love X, nice choice
It was legitimately exciting to hear you reacting to these songs. I know those feels and it's why I keep coming back to punk rock after discovering these same songs. We share the same enthusiasm so I'm looking forward to more from you!
Ah! Some more California punk bands would be cool. Rancid, Operation Ivy, Descendents, Bad Religion, AFI, NOFX, Tiger Army, and The Adolescents. You already listened to Dead Kennedys but if you're going to do another song of theirs, I'd recommend Holiday in Cambodia.
Some Rancid would be great -- LA River, St. Mary, Motorcycle Ride....
@@BradMurray oh man... I don't hink those songs really represent Rancid fairly; maybe Motorcycle Ride. It would have to be Time Bomb, Fall Back Down, Poison, Roots Radicals... etc.
TSOL, Agent Orange,
Surprised no one's mentioned Crass yet. Classic anarcho-punk, Penis Envy is one of my favourite punk albums of all time.
Stranglers: peaches, the saints: this perfect day, ruts: staring at the rude boys, oh and the anti nowhere league, siouxsie and the banshees.. All classic stuff 😉
Saints, right on!!
Love how much you are enjoying punk. These bands mean a whole lot to me & many people ❤️
Poly Styrene.
Buzzcocks are so catchy! Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain loved them. Operator's Manual by Buzzcocks great album!!
You will love death metal. Chromatic riffs. Very dark. You'll just have to get used to the heaviness.
The Dead Boys should definitely be in the next reaction. Rancid is a good "newer" punk band, and MC5 is another Stooges-era, pre-punk band.
Their later albums are also great, but they are less punk and more conventional rock.
omfggg I haven’t heard some of these songs in a minute but I’m so happy 💖 loved this reaction
You should listen to JFA “skateboard anarchy” The Faction “skate and destroy” and Agent Orange “ bloodstains” some of the best 80s punk bands
Some female punk bands/singers you might enjoy are 1) X, 2) Nina Hagen, 3) Lene Lovich, 4) The Slits, 5) Lydia Lunch, 6) Au Pairs, 7) Siouxsie and The Banshees, 8) Crass, 9) The Plasmatics, 10) Poison Girls.
more misfits - London Dungeon, Vampira, All Hell Breaks Loose, Braineaters. Walk Among us is my faaaaaaaaavorite Punk album
Misfits its a band of phases. I think you would like to react another phases of them. There are pretty good songs on each album released.
I was so hoping the Dead Kennedys track was gonna be "Too drunk to f*ck", that's such a you tune... Maybe I'm a bit biased
Yes, Dead Milkmen FTW! Methodist Colouring Book is my favourite song of theirs

The Pistols are posers. And Johnny Rotten is a sellout. However, the Pistols are one of the most influential bands to the Punk genre. So they deserve credit for that. But they’re nowhere near the best punk band ever.

We need a part 3 !!!!
Check out :

Great picks :) ..except for the Dead Kennedys song...it's more of a jokey song really than the rest of their catalog. To Drunk to F**k, California Uber Alles, Police Truck, Holiday in Cambodia or a few others would really have captured Dead Kennedys better. DK are my personal favourite punk band and I never listen to Kill the Poor :P I think it's their worst song tbh.
You should really check out Post-Punk at some point! Joy Division, Wire, The Fall, Gang of Four, Siouxsie, Television, early Cure.
I love Cure & Joy Division. but yes would be great to check out some others I haven't heard. one of my favourite genres

@@kirawasareactor I was the first one to suggest this song to you, if you remember.
Pretenders were about as punk as Blondie 🤣🤣🤣
Commercial radio friendly crap

@@gmantramp404, well, they’re a great band…full stop. Moreover, that first album has some KILLER tunes on it, including Punk-style rockers. While I agree, they, much later, were more radio friendly, those first 2 or 3 albums are classics!
@@kirawasareactor, by the way, the song called "The Wait" on that first Pretender's album is super fun too! it's Punk-y but it's also go Pop sensibilities too. Great stuff!! Honeyman Scott goes APE on that song!
If you dig the Misfits, def check out Samhain. It's like the Misfits with a little more of a gothic vibe. "Black Dream" is a fave.
Most people started with rock then punk then went to metal for more musicianship. I think your ready for more intense metal. Amon Amarth, Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Morbid Angel, and some Thrash for fun Exodus and Testament
If there's ever a Part 3, The Wolfman recommends a few of the following, if you're going for a first impression, some that are maybe more deep cuts but are still vital to the understanding of the genre in my humble opinion:-
Minor Threat - In My Eyes or Minor Threat (the self-titled song is basically their manifesto in music form)
The Germs - Lexicon Devil
Violet Femmes - Add It Up or Blister in the Sun
Richard Hell - Blank Generation
Joy Division - No Love Lost (there's a couple of different mixes of this, but either one is good)
And most importantly, since you've already heard from the Godfather of Punk, Mr Iggy Pop of the Stooges, it's only fair that I recommend something from the Godmother as welll...
Patti Smith - Free Money
Sex Pistols were very courageous! Not like today's punk bands going along with the mob, those guys actually stood up for something!
They were literally put together to sell clothes
Each and every one of these bands is classic for a reason
Turnstile - Love Connection
Rotting Out - Last Man Standing
Ekulu - Unscrew My Head
Dying Wish - Fragments of a Bitter Memory
Turnstile is so good!
Germs :Richie daggers crime. X : Los Angeles
More Misfits!! They need their own full video, and Static Age, or even Collection 1 would be awesome to see!
I love the way you listen to music. Makes me happy.
I so love your reaction to Bondage up yours….I actually did hear this when I was 14 at a very straight laced school & it absolutely blew my tiny mind!!
Hybrid Moments from Misfits is one of the most perfect songs if you get a chance to listen to it.
I love these punk reactions so much. If you do a part 3 I suggest you get into the 2nd wave of punk like 1980-87 ish). I definitely recommend Bad Religion, The Descendents, and Operation Ivy(which came a couple years later)
Suggested tracks: Bad religion- Suffer or Anxiety Descendents - Bikage or Hope Operation Ivy (Later formed Rancid) - Sound System or Bombshell
Never seen anyone so enthusiastic about the music I love.
