Thanks for this. Had some apps that were updated and liked the old version better. Still had them on one Firestick. Now I have them back on all my Firesticks, and Yes, auto updates are off now.

Xplore doesn’t show the USB stick which I configured to store apps that don’t fit on internal storage.
Is there a way to backup and transfer apps not just from internal storage but from external storage on a USB stick?

First of all a great video. While this method installed the applications, the application icons on the target firestick installed from the thumb drive are "squished" from the left and right. Any idea how to restore full ikons? Thanks!

But imo taking apps from a 4K which only updates to OS6 I would just download the Latest version that are compatible to OS8 which the new second gen 4K Max uses to avoid any issues with running an outdated app

For many apps, I'd agree 100%. But there are some 3rd party apps, that will remain nameless, that are hard to find, and/or remember where they came from. But yeah, for official apps like Netflix, Hulu, etc. Definitely better to just download fresh.
this is all well and good. But if you can't get the old firestick to assign the usb as external storage, this is not going to work. My 4k firestick see's the usb drive, it asks to format it. So I format it, but it never shows up under fire tv/storage. I got my existing 4K stick on Oct. 2019, so i think it is to old to "accept" any kind of external storage. To test the cable and the usb drive, i put it on another firestick (non 4k) that i got in nov. 2020, and this one see's the usb drive and it shows up under fire tv/storage as external storage with no issues. Looks like i will have to start from scratch if i replace my 4K older fire stick. Lucky me. :(
When you power on the 4k Max do you need to let it go thru the setup before you copy from the backup USB ??
Are you talking about the initial setup out of the Box?

I followed your guide exactly the installed folder with all the apks copied on to my usb storage but when I plug the storage into my new firestick and open the installed folder on usb storage it’s emty if I plug the storage back into my old firestick the apks reappear
On the first Firestick, did you Pre-Format the USB drive to FAT32 yourself on a computer, or did you let the older Firestick do it for you?
I had one other person reach out to me privately reporting the same thing, but I have not been able to reproduce the issue. Let me know. And if you let the Firestick format it, try the Computer method with the instructions provided. Good Luck. In the mean time, I'm going to continue trying to reproduce that issue.
The usb drive came new formatted to fat32 I also formatted it with windows computer and even with Mac book all with the same result

No ADB shell needed. Just follow the instructions in this video step by step. (Just make sure the drive is FAT32 before you plug it in).

I gave a couple issues ...
1.) I have NO desktop or laptop computer. Have been using an 64 GB 'San Disk Ultra Flair' USB flash drive (recommended to work by other content providers).
I assumed (and later read somewhere?) that because of its size it would possibly be pre-formatted to 'exFAT', instead of FireStick's required 'FAT32'.
As such, I have an old 'HOMEWORX Mediasonic 150' digital converter box (w/PVR functions) and recalled that it could format USB's to FAT32 ... but I did NOT know what size limitations it might have!
It appeared to work OK. I used 'Remote ADB Shell' app to PARTITION it (Internal:20%/External:80%) and since able to move my chosen apps on or off of that 20% storage with no problem.
Only issue I noticed is I do NOT get my pop-up notices in lower-right corner of the screen (which indicates when downloads, moves or copying is completed; or USB is mounted or unmounted). This is rather annoying, but otherwise doesn't prevent me using external USB storage.
2.) PROBLEM: I have over a 100 apps (Appstore and 3rd-party), so obviously the vast majority reside currently on my USB stick.
I have no issue using 'x-Plore' file manager to make COPIES to a 'backup folder' (as you demonstrate), though I must admit, I don't know whether that 'backup folder' is located on the 20% Internal portion OR the 80% External portion ... or whether that even matters?
My problem is that when I plug that old USB into my new FireStick (going from a 'standard 4K' to a 1st Gen, '4K MAX'), that new stick only has the standard 8 GB (5.3 GB 'useable') of storage! So, obviously not nearly enough room to download ALL my apps!!
Yes, I will obviously need to format a SECOND USB flash drive for the NEW FireStick, but it would not be available to accept the excess APK files (as the old USB has to occupy the new FireStick to do the transfer!! WHAT CAN I DO?
Now, I DO have a 'uGreen USB Hub' (with 3 USB 3.0 ports, etc). So, I could have TWO USB's plugged into THAT. My question is ... would 'x-Plore' app RECOGNIZE them BOTH and allow me to TRANSFER/INSTALL from the old USB to the new (essentially empty) USB? Either directly, all at once; OR in 'chunks' to the new stick's Internal (then I'd have to MOVE them to new USB to free up space for next 'chunk' of apps; OR would NONE of this work at all?
Sorry for the length, but none of the content providers address this problem! I suppose if I was trying to move stuff to the '2ND Gen' MAX (with its approx. 13 GB of useable storage), it might be enough room to temporarily accept ALL the apps (maybe) ... but that device still has too many issues (associated with Fire OS8) for me to consider it at this time.
LASTLY (I swear!) ... I have purchased a 128 GB USB (same brand/type as I mentioned above). I was informed by the makers of the HOMEWORX Mediasonic PVR, that their box supposedly can only format a max of '64 GB' to FAT32. So now, with no Windows computer available, I don't know what to do?
Despite what I noted above about pre-formatting and size above, I actually came across a video yesterday, where the guy used the EXACT same 128 GB 'San Disk Ultra Flair' USB that I have (he even held it up to the screen) and when he plugged it into his computer ... IT WAS PRE-FORMATTED TO 'FAT32' (instead of 'exFAT')!!!
So, maybe I'll just try it out of the package and see if I get lucky! I still don't quite understand why the FireStick, itself, doesn't do this (as it prompts for FURTHER formatting when setting it up!) or why 'Remote ADB Shell' app is not capable? It's rather exasperating!

Does this system only work on the new FS 4k Max? I resell FS with 3rd party apps but I usually only sell the standard 4Ks or even the older 3rd gens. I’ve got to figure out a way to save time loading them. Could this be it? Help!
This will work on the older 4K, too. Remember my info towards the end tho. This does not clone app data, only the apps. So if you configure your apps and then want to clone, this won't work. Good luck!

Will not let me move to hover over the 64 scandisk on right side in Xplore. Only has a box on "Root". What do i need to do?
You may not have accepted all the permissions the first time you opened X-Plore.
Try erasing the data on that app in Settings\Manage Installed Applications.
You should be able to move up and down either side of the screen so anything you stop on is highlighted as shown in the video.
If you still have trouble, shoot me an email with pictures of your screen with as much info as possible.

I think Amazon has blocked us from doing this. It doesn't show the backup to install on the new firestick. I unplugged it and plugged it back into the original and now the external drive wont show any more. Can you tell us what to do? I see in the comments other people having the same issue. Thanks
Hmm, this still works for me. Did you make absolutely certain that you accepted all the permissions when you installed X-Plore? That's key. You might try force stopping XPlore and deleting data and try again.
I am having a hard time maneuvering xplore. I managed to create a new folder on my USB but can not open App Manager, it is stuck on the USB drive. Then I restarted and now I have the USB drive highlighted on both side and can't open the USB or move the highlighted on either side and App Manager is still closed.
I just started my new firestick max and installed xplore and it works great, only thing is I still can't get it to work on my old 4k firestick, so I have nothing to transfer.
I should also say that on my 4k firestick I only have the option to turn on "Apps from unknown sources" off, I can not pick xplore.

I'm getting an error message (in red) on bottom left that reads "Can't create dir: BACKUP (Can't create dir /storage/B049-7703/BACKUP)" This happens when I try to create folder and hit NEXT in the dialog box. This is happening INSTEAD of the white pop up box you got at 3:07. I confirmed USB is formatted (out of the box) as FAT32. I even tried a second USB stick as I thought mine may be defective even though it was new. They are 8GB sticks if that matters.
ANY SUGGESTIONS?
This is most likely a Permissions issue for the X-Plore app. I just re-watched the video and realized this part may have been inadvertently edited out, my apologies.
The first time you open X-Plore you are presented with a popup that asks you for allow access to storage. To fix this in your case, go to Settings\Applications\Manage Installed Applications, scroll down to the X-Plore App, go into it and select "Clear Data" and confirm. That will trigger that popup message the next time you open the X-Plore app. Make sure you allow that permission and you should be good to go.

It appears that my hardware/software is the same as yours (4K Firestick running OS6) so I'm not sure what it could be??

@@CordCuttersLI REALLY appreciate what you do & offering additional help. I am a subscriber. Honestly, it's more work to make the video/take pics documenting the process and emailing you than its worth to me. I've already "manually" set up my firestick. Majority of my apps (including Xplore) are from amazon app store, I only have a handful of 3rd party apps that are easy enough to find so it wasn't a big deal.
Don’t see the flash drive on Xplorer with the OTG adapter
Could be a bad cable or a cheap USB drive, but you should see it appear there. (make sure you accept all permissions on the XPlore app.
Easier way would be to copy the folder from current Firestick to Web Store (One Drive in my case).

It's the closest thing in existence, bar none. Not a clone, but not a waste of time if you want to set up several Firesticks with all the same apps. This will ALWAYS beat downloading all those apps for each one-by-one.
