- The Dangers of Ivy
Ivy-clad buildings can be attractive and are especially useful in adding interest to a shady spot. However, the ability of ivy (Hedera) to self-cling and grow rapidly can make it nuisance, so control may be necessary.
Ivy is a woody stemmed, self-clinging climber that can grow quickly to cover fences, walls and buildings. It is a cause for concern owing to its rapid pace of growth and worries about potential damage to the support structure.
Self-clinging climbers such as Boston ivy and Virginia creeper do not usually cause damage to wall surfaces, but common or English ivy supports itself by aerial roots and where these penetrate cracks or joints they may cause structural damage. Sound masonry is unaffected.
Its dense cover can hide defects in the fabric of the building and hinder maintenance work. Ivy may also provide access for intruders and harbour pests such as mice.
Where brickwork is sound, the main problem is to keep growth away from gutters and paint work.
It has been suggested that vegetation attached to walls could lead to dampness resulting from slower drying conditions following rain. This may be plausible on a south-west facing wall where the rain is driven by prevailing winds. However, other sources suggest that such plants will have a slight drying effect on mortar and will also provide some degree of insulation in winter, particularly evergreen ivies covering exposed north and east-facing walls.
Large climbers can pose a risk to buildings. Such problems are most likely with older property, those with shallow foundations and those built on clay soils.

He forgot to mention number 4. Ivy can creep into your home and in the middle of the night it will strangle you while you're asleep. Lol
Happened 2 me once
It dragged me out the window. I woke up down the side of the shed.
It rolled me up in a blanket then tried to smoke me like a joint
😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂
can we just appreciate the humor this guy has? :DD
Surely anyone with an once of common sense would cut their beautiful ivy back before it got into guttering or roofing.
Paul D people are so mean damage to the wood work damage to the gutter. Gutters aren’t alive like
Unfortunately we will never eradicate that monster for the forest on the west side of the Cascade mountains. It is a discusting hideous monster that kills big old native trees.
I don't understand. Dot let it grow that far. Trim it. Maintain it. A bit of common sense is all that's needed really.
alot of people cannot be bothered and let it run wild
was watching the video with all seriousness until your dramatic way to end the vid. 🤣.. Thanks!
Just trim it. Problem solved. Safe ivy plants
Prevents walls from breathing? Is that a scientific phenomenon?
walls are partially porous even if it's solid. if thick ivy growth covers it and your area is prone to rain, youll get molds
Fun video. I'll trim mine back a bit. 👍🏻
Ivy is amazing. Purifies the air we breath so those with asthma would benefit from having it around. It also attracts birds and bees. Covering your house can keep it 8% warmer in winter and 18% cooler in summer. Natural insulator
If you don't trim English ivy and keep it at a certain height, it would grow wild and destructive looking like a mess. The plant looks nice when it's kelp neat.
Someone who hates English Ivy as much as I do. Here in the Pacific Northwest USA, it is a horrible invasive species. It kills big old healthy trees. We have parks that are nothing but English Ivy strangling trees. I hate the stuff.
When i lived in the northern PNW, I moved into a house with English ivy gone wild, i was never able to get rid of it. I’m sure it could be kept under control, but these home owners developed health problems and probably couldn’t keep it maintained….i would be afraid of that happening.
I'd rather have the look and maintain it, all day long
@1.39 LOOOOOOOL 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Over the top...
house: I can't breathe
😂😂😂😂
Good grief! Ridiculously dramatic. Keep it on the ground or trained and it's beautiful..
