  • I attack the 20-30 year old English Ivy that had infested the 50 foot high California Live Oaks on the property behind my home. It takes lots of tools and time. [4K]

This video, I think, is one of the best that matches my situation. About 4 to 6 inches thick and the bark just peels off.
    Great work!

Excellent video: very satisfying from the comfort of my office chair! You must post another video in 6 months to show what's happened. Cheers from the UK (home of English ivy...)

After you cut the vines and they die, do you need to go up the tree and remove the dead vines? Or are you all done at this point, and the vines will just rot and fall off naturally?

I'm late to the party, but I just did this to my live oaks here in Tallahassee, FL. Only difference is I didn't have English Ivy... it was Poison Ivy. Looked just like your situation. Heavy cutting was done with a 16" battery chainsaw and the rest with loppers. After a couple of slices, the big vines pulled right off. I actually pulled a vine run that was over 40 feet. I covered my entire body pretty well, but I have a few rashes developing. For the rest of my trees (like 7-8) I'll wear a hazmat suit for. Thanks for the vid.

Aw, man. Mine are well and truly dead now and pretty ugly, but I've only been able to lever a few off the trunks -- but when they come they are really long. (And I've had good luck with Tecnu for poison oak, since I seem to get it just by looking at it!)

@@WardCo Thanks for that. I only used the “scrub with soap and water like trying to remove the skin” method. I’ll try using the Tecnu next time.

A great job. I presume that the ivy canopy will eventually fall out of the trees.

I have a similar situation to yours in that I am concerned with Ivy taking trees down that are on a neighbor’s property. A neighbor who is absent and I haven’t yet located to review with.
You chose not to relieve all the trees on the neighbor’s property. I would ask if the loss of those trees would affect your privacy or shade or a fencing affect they might have while standing that you benefit from. It might be better in the long run to at least cut the Ivy at their base also, if not paint the poison on them. Just thinkin.

Great video, would be good to see a few follow ups of that monster. Great effort! Any excuse for more power tools too.
You’ll probably find loads of dead ivy vines falling on your head for months now! 😂

Thanks. Yeah, it's what? 6 or 7 months now and they've FINALLY all died. Dumped ivy leaves in the back yard for months. Kind of looks like crap now with the dead vines but the trees are happy.

I feel like we may have entered the twilight zone, because you and I had the exact same day of toiling over massive vines on a mammoth oak tree. Unfortunately, I moved in too late to save this ancient beauty..and I’m going to need to cut her down (very strategically since we’re in a close quarters neighborhood). But I’m a bit nervous to fell this tree until I strip the vines gripping and entangling the major dead limbs. Feel like I would just be asking for limbs swinging and landing haphazardly. But yeah… it’s tough work assassinating vines, but man does it feel grand.

Too bad you felt the need to insult and degrade your neighbors like that. It really detracts from any "how to" video, when unprovable, and quite likely false judgments are made about people.
I don't like English ivy either, but having grown up with it all around, both here in Southern America and England itself, I know that more people assume it is a "good" ground cover than who realize how damaging it can be.
Next time, just stick to the task at hand, and leave the insults out, please.
If nothing else, think of insults as being a form of intellectual English ivy.

    • @WardCo

Sorry you feel that way, but I stand by the accuracy of the remarks and their inclusion in the video. Good news is thay they've moved out and the place is for sale, so we're hoping to wind up with new owners who are a bit more contentious about property maintenance and a lot of other things. Fingers crossed.

My neighbors are also lazy. House looks like crap. Can’t take care of weeds and a beautiful sycamore is being destroyed in a historic neighborhood because they are lazy.

    • @WardCo
      @WardCo  Рік тому +2

Yeah. It's maddening. Only takes 1 bad neighbor to screw things up. (Fortunately, most are really great.)
