  • We've all done it...put a new box on our hive then come back a week later to find your bees haven't even touched it or worse they swarmed and left because they thought they didn't have enough room. Ughhh :( Here are some of the tricks I've learned and use to get my bees to draw out that next box FAST!

    One idea for you I got from Barnyard Bees. He runs a ton of 5 frame hives and produces his own queens. He says that when you queens taking their mating flight you don't want the small hives right next to each other. He says the queens sometimes get confused and go into the wrong hive and get killed. He says he alternates which side he has the entrance so that the entrances are not right next to each other. He also paints his hives different colors. His goal is to make it really easy for the mated queens to know which hive entrance to return into.

    You could also do a mini damarree by Moving the queen to a box with just one frame of brood and the rest of just foundation, putting an excluder so that she stays in the box you want drawn out, she'll need the space to make brood. You can take the QE off when it's drawn

      Ahh!!! So happy to hear that is working for ya! I’m actually thinking about trying it out with my 2 story nucs since I gotta get them built out. I’m pretty sure we only beekeep the way we do now for the beekeepers sake

    I watched alooot of beevideos last years, and did not expect to learn 3-4 new things in 11 minutes!! I love the way you experiment, your curiosity, logical thinking and how you explain very clearly and effectively for us. You're not one of those: "Just because it's always been like that!" But more like: "That can be interesting to find out." I just got my first two beehives myself a few months ago, and experiment with homemade 5 frameboxes like yours. Best wishes to you from Norway, and looking forward to next video from you and your flying friends :)

    The queen will still past a honey barrier. I use excluders but I took one out for an experiment and she crossed an entire deep box and laid in the top (3rd deep)

      I'll bet you had an upper vent or entrance when this happened. The queen will not (mostly) lay in an un-vented upper box as the temp and humidity are not right for eggs. The bees generally want brood nearer to the entrance.

  • @strutt01
    @strutt01 2 роки тому +1

    I like the empty box below the brood chamber idea. They keep the brood nearest ventilation.

    • @beefitbeekeeping
      @beefitbeekeeping  2 роки тому +2

      Yes that too! I’m pretty sure the only reason we put boxes on top is for the beekeeper so it’s easier than lifting off boxes but the brood box is never really that heavy as long as you can get it away from the bottom board

    These videos make me respect bees more and more with each one🤯Funny how the queen won't cross honey and u have to make her a path, reminded me of ppl dropping rose pedals for the queen to walk on😂Also cool they don't like the honey at their gate so if robbers show up there is a defensive wall to pass before it's Brilliant we don't give these creatures Nearly enough credit and u summed it up Perfectly when u said when u Know bees u can get them to build the way U want bc its the way They like to do it ur not Forcing them so it really is a symbiotic relationship I love it☺️Well Happy🐪Day my favorite Keeper and thank u for another great video and Hope u had a Good day today and Hope training is going well and I will see U in the next one #andallthatjazz 😂☺️👑🐝💛👏 #emilyisthebeesknees #beefitbeekeeping #beefithoney🍯 #myfavoritekeeper #queenbeeemily👑🐝

    My first split was off a queen that went past that dome, while uncommon 😵‍💫"they be crazy bees"🙃 that don't seem to read the books.😉I think very few watch videos either.🤣
    A lot of keeps say if you want them to drawn go thing, bulk up go heavy. You can also try under supering, seemed to work well for me but it was under heavy flow. I hear🐝don't move packed pollen you could try that a frame that also has pollen on it? Ty for your videos keep them coming, you put out great info some good tips all in one place.👍
    I enjoy seeing how ya keep bees in Michigan, I look forward to following your Winter plans and experience, I've got family out there somewhere, I've seen/heard about your Winters.

      After posting this I’m realizing it must happen often. I’ve had a few people say the same. Oops 🙈 I’ll watch for that in my colonies. I don’t think the bees move pollen either but not 100% sure. I notice they always put a lot of pollen and bee bread sometimes near the center of the brood nest. Must be where the field bees are putting it and it never gets moved after that. I hear they pass it from bee to bee pretty much. Field bee gives it to a nurse bee, nurse bee gives it to another bee to be stored, then another bee comes and moves it somewhere else like a factory line.
      We’ve lucked out the last 3 years where I’m at but idk leaves are starting to change and fall already and August was colder than it’s ever been for us. 🤷🏼‍♀️ hoping for the best!! Blessed to have ya here 😉♥️ thank ya!

    Another trick on double deep nuks is move the queen frame and two other brood frames up top and put the blank foundations below her and the brood, but feed thin syrup and they'll draw it out so the queen can move back down, bees want honey above the queen and brood, not below her.

  • @carlsledge3868
    @carlsledge3868 2 роки тому +1

    Bees will always cover brood, I always put a frame of brood in the top box when I pull frames from the top box and add blank foundation and put a blank frame in bottom box, if there's no or light flow feed 1/2 to 1 by weight sugar syrup, it's close to nectar and they'll draw the blank foundation to store it. Emily, I'm pretty sure I posted this in channel about 3 months ago. For those who don't want to go to the trouble of weighing out 1 to 2 syurp it's a 4# bag of white sugar to just under a gallon of water, you make up and store it by adding 1/3 teaspoon of bleach to keep it from fermenting and getting black mold in your jars or buckets depending how you feed, I normally keep 1/2 gallon jars on my smaller colonies to build them up this time of year with smaller entrances to prevent robbing, my double deeps look like they're swarming when thunderstorms end anxiously wanting to get back to working the fall flows.

      My bad, old people that need new glasses make typos, should've read "I'm pretty sure I posted" ******. Guess what else I have to do, when I want check brood frames for eggs, I can only see then by wearing a 3.5X optivisor under my veil, try that in a hot hive of bees, it's annoying as h$ll. I'm like Bob Binnie, if I weren't 72 and had the vision I had 20 years ago, I'd graft my own queens.

      I’ve been experimenting with both 2:1, 1:1, and 1:2 but I haven’t figured out which one I like better for comb building yet. When listening to a lecture by mike Palmer he said you have to feed your bees a lot at a time. Can’t be just a quart jar or they will use it to just feed theirselves. Has to be at least a gallon at a time to them. I’ve been open feeding but they’ve been taking it down 3 gallon over 3 or 4 days. That’s SLOW for as many hives that I have. Gonna see about setting up a different feeding system just most of my hives have mental covers so I can’t just drill a hole

      You're closer to Bob Binnie's climate than mine, even we're both in GA, most of his yards are in the Blue Ridge Mountains above 2500' elevation we're their fall comes earlier than mine, anyway he usually feeds 2 gallons of 1 to 1.5 syurp in 2 gallon top plastic buckets on top of the hives and he has metal covers as well but he drills a 2" hole thru them from the bottom side using a hole saw and a oak block of wood under the metal so he gets a clean hole so it can be plugged with a 2" plug he sells if you can't find them online, anyway he comes back in about 3 weeks and all hives that don't have the hive weight he's looking for gets another round of syurp of 2 to 1 mixture, he actually has scales to weigh every hive, all this I've posted is in his videos as well, Bob Binnie would be the Micheal Palmer of the south, he sells more honey than anyone on the east coast, check out Blue Ridge Honey Co. he goes to great pains to make the best sourwood honey of anyone in the US.
