I was given a very very old swarm trap that is full of bees. It doesn't have any frames in it and it's wide open. It was hand made. Very docile hive. I wonder if it's to late December 28th to try and get them in a hive box. Thank you for any help.
I am so much interested in this business based on what I have seen. Thank you so much. Teach me how to connect with you eanextly. I want to be a farmer

As a novice beekeeper 3 years in, this year I'm going to make a couple of splits from my five hives. This video has been so well presented and laid out it's been a pleasure to watch. Your level of calmness and ease in which you work is something I aspire to.
Thanks for the compliment, Joey! We're glad to have you along on the journey. Please let us know if you have any questions, or would like to see a particular subject covered on video. Have a great week!
I've made splits many different ways, but this year I've followed Central Beekeepers Supply's tutorial "How to Split a hive". After seeing Royal Jelly in a queen cup, I quickly caught the queen which was isolated in the Brood box per the "Pre-Split Inspection" video. I marked the frame (CBS) I took her from, and moved frames of brood, bread, food sources, and bee's exactly how John suggested. The split hive is 20 miles, from original location, and blowing up.. Capped Queen Cells were located on the marked frame, 9 days later, with plenty of brood and bees. This is an easy way to split and advert swarming. Whether you are a beginner or just tuning up before going into the field, these video's are like having a mentor with you. Thanks for taking the time to make them.
David, thank you for the extremely kind comment. We're thrilled to hear about your hives this year. Glad the method worked for you! We really appreciate you watching and commenting. Keep us updated on the progress of your hives, please!
I am about to do my first split as well. A little nervous about finding the queen and I don't have a clip but I do have an old queen cage from a purchased queen years ago.
There are several reasons these video's are of such high quality. Professional filming, knowledge of the subject, and clear communication. Because John listens to our questions, all day everyday, he understands our needs. He methodically explains and demonstrates, step by step, when, what, & how too. John isn't trying to show us what he knows, he obviously wants us to succeed in our Beekeeping Journey.
Thanks, David. That's one of our favorite things about John. He explains things clearly, takes his time, is patient, and has a world of knowledge between his ears. We're extremely fortunate to have him!
Thank you, i do the same as you do in the Netherlands. But we have frames with longer ears take 1 ear in my fist and clap on it al the bees fall in the box and then i put that empty frame back.

Thank you so much for applying a common sense approach to splitting a hive. Leaving behind the frame that had the Queen on it was A Ha moment for me. That's the frame with the freshest eggs ready for the Workers to change it to another Queen. My problem was I moved the entire frame with queen to the destination hive and the original hive failed. Then to add insult to injury, I moved a Brood Frame back into the failed hive which caused both hives to fail. Thanks for opening my eyes.
really well done video. I like his slow and smooth style. I like how he explains it first, then shows it. I also like that he covers stem to stern. So many other videos just skip over really important steps.

Outstanding presentation sir!! I'm new to beekeeping and have been watching numerous videos, trying to gather all of the info that I can find!! With that being said I have retained more knowledge from one of your videos than I have over the last several weeks!! Thank you!!
You can use an old-school metal thumbtack as alternative to marking the keeper frame with a sharpie. This way you can take off the tack after the split is established. I’d imagine otherwise after a while you might have a bunch of random pen marks.
Thanks for a great video. Content is clear and as a new beekeeper of 2 months it gave clear information to help me better understand how to split a hive.👍
Really enjoy your teaching. You take some of the anxiety of a new bee keeper away through your thorough presentation. Have you ever done a split from a horizontal hive? I would very much like to see a demonstration of how to split from a horizontal hive. Keep up the good work.
Well my friend, I should have. But they beat me to it yesterday while I was gone. I did catch the swarm and have a plan you will see in the next long hive video. Stay tuned and we'll #RTBBF!
This is a well-produced educational video packed with practical advice from an experienced beekeeper. I am a novice beekeeper in South Africa but I'm sure most of the advice will work for me as well. What I noticed was the extreme gentleness of the way the frames were handled and that is essential to prevent the bees from attacking, something I've experienced a few times. Thanks for pulling back the curtain on how you do a hive split.
Thank you very much for your compliments! We appreciate that. We find that the bees respond to kindness with kindness. We've raised several generations of these bees and throughout that time they've grown used to our touch. We love it. Thanks so much for watching!
Love your channel was beekeeper in mo. Years ago now am relearning in robertsdale al now got better understanding of splits and overall care from your channel will be buying from you just from your care and attitudes
Another great video. I love that your intro and music is spots is soft and not blaring. The dialog is very clear and easy to understand. The camera work is perfect and the cameraman knows when to move in closer and when to get the wider view. This is one of the best beekeeping how-to videos out there! The only thing I might try differently is the OTS queen rearing method so I can harvest some queen cells into queen mating nucs as extra insurance.
Came across your video today as we just purchased out kit for beginners yesterday as hubs found a hive in a fallen tree & we want to save them. Very well done on the presentation, great information. You can count on us Tulsans following to learn more. Thanks so much!
I did my splits according to this video last year and had a huge success. I'm coming back to it this year as a refresher using it again. Thanks, we'll done and a Lot of help. Susan NW Georgia
Well here I am again. Using this great tutorial on splits as a refresher. If you are a new Beekeeper use this video. It helped me so much in the beginning and continues to remind me. Thanks folks😊
I came back again this year to review! Thank you, again!❤️ I started my first horizontal Langstroth last year. Your videos taught me so much! Keep up your great tutorials. I'll share and help your channel where I can. Blessings on you and your family.
Thank you John, as a new beekeeper this has been one of the best videos on the splitting process that I have seen and appreciate the time and effort, , I feel that I can do it when the time comes with confidence. Keep up the good work! Which of the after split options did you end up doing with the new colony? I look forward to seeing a follow up video.
Thanks for the comment, Robin! That means a lot. We ended up taking the splits to a different yard on the property. It's far enough away from the hives to give the bees plenty of chance to start anew. Good luck on your splits! Let us know how it goes.
I'm so glad y'all now have a youtube channel as always I love gathering knowledge from y'all. I'm proud to have been blessed to have yall around for my beekeeping journey I guess iv been in it around 10 years now thanks to y'all for taking phone calls and answering crazy questions while I learned about bees. What a great video. I like the way you talk through what you are doing and more importantly why you are doing it. This will be my third year beekeeping and I feel like I've been lucky so far. With your help I will improve my skills and get more of the luck out of my beekeeping and replace it with knowledge. Great job.
Awesome! Thank you, Rick. The longer you keep bees, the more intuitively you'll be able to care for their needs. We all depend a great deal on luck, even after many years in the bee yard. Keep doing your best, and eventually it'll seem like second nature. Thanks for watching!

My first year almost done, after mid summer bear attacks, new queen during attacks, living in northern vt winters very harsh, but to my surprise I have more bees then going into winter, looking to try my first split soon, this is excellent video for all beekeepers very informative

Thank you from Flinders Australia for your wonderful detailed explanations, great humour and excellent camera work showing how to split a hive, plus the tips on the feeder insert and location options for drift. Really like how you explain why you do things a certain way as well as the steps. We are in the depths of winter here on the south coast - so learning all I can to prepare for Spring and the best way to look after my beautiful bees - you being 6 months ahead of us!! Love the concept of getting the jump on the queen by duplicating a natural swarm and helping her along the way into her new house. Much more appealing than the alternative of chasing my queen down the road to try to catch her when she absconds to who knows where!! Quite excited to try it if/when my hive builds up enough and all indicators show it is ready. A really informative and enjoyable video. Warm regards, Esther
Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment, Esther. We love hearing from beekeepers all over the world. It's one of the best things about starting this channel. Please keep us updated once in a while about how your bees are doing. Have a great day!

This was a wonderfully informative video! Your step-by-step explanation of how to do a split was will be so helpful come this spring. As a first-year beekeeper (fingers crossed all my girls make it through this winter) I will be trying my hand at splitting my hives. I do run horizontal hives, but from everything I have read the process is similar. Your video is one I am saving to rewatch as the time for splitting draws near. Thanks again for all the great information, you now have a new subscriber here in SW Missouri! Hope your ladies made it through the Polar Vortex and will be providing you with new splits of your own this spring. Stay warm and blessing on your and yours!
Thank you so much for the kind comment. We wish you the best of luck with splitting your hives. If you need any advice, give us a shout! Happy Beekeeping! 🐝
EXCELLENT tutorial, straight from an educator’s handbook. (As a veteran teacher of 30 years and a beekeeper for 15, my hat goes off to you.) You previewed what you were going to do and then DID it and showed how it was done. Your explanations of what you were observing as you went, enriched the entire experience. I respect how you went slow and were respectful of the bees and didn’t assume your viewers had any previous knowledge. The very find camera work (GoPro?) topped it off. Well done! By the way, what does CBS mean? Why didn’t you take you own advice and use a Sharpie to mark that frame? You’re GOOD. I couldn’t keep track of it while I was watching. What did you mean, “Sometimes a virgin queen will come right back and “shoot upstairs’? Couldn’t follow the part about the branches in front. Can you clarify? All in all, a very fine presentation. Thank you!
Fantastic video and answers a lot of my questions, but I still have three. 1) What ratio of sugar water do you feed the spit and for how long? 2) Does splitting a hive in this manor keep them from producing honey that year? 3) If you don't have drawn comb, can you use foundation frames in the split? thanks
1) One cup of sugar, one cup of water, minimum 2-weeks. 2) Both the donor and the split should produce honey for you, depending on nectar flow. 3) Yes, no problem using the foundation frames, just be sure to arrange them as so the frames with brood stay together in both boxes. Thanks for the questions! As always, #RTBBF !
This is by far the best explained and presented video of how to do a split. Thank you very much, I will be following your direction in the upcoming weeks.

Glad it was helpful. Let us know if you have any questions!
Wonderful video!
Thank you very much!
Thanks Doug! We work hard to make sure we publish the best bee content that we're able to produce. Thank you so much for watching.
Came across your video today as we just purchased out kit for beginners yesterday as hubs found a hive in a fallen tree & we want to save them. Very well done on the presentation, great information. You can count on us Tulsans following to learn more. Thanks so much!
Great to hear from you, Karla! Good luck on your new hive. Give us a shout if you have any questions!
Thank you for an excellent video , very clear and concise instructions . We are much later than you are, here in Nova Scotia.
Glad it was helpful! We appreciate you watching. If you have questions as your season progresses, give us a shout!
Thank you very much. If the girls pull through the winter I'll be making my first split this spring.
Very exciting! Good luck, and let us know how it turns out!
I did my splits according to this video last year and had a huge success. I'm coming back to it this year as a refresher using it again.
Thanks, we'll done and a Lot of help.

Great to hear that, Susan. Best of luck to you this year!
Well here I am again. Using this great tutorial on splits as a refresher.
If you are a new Beekeeper use this video.
It helped me so much in the beginning and continues to remind me.
Thanks folks😊
You Grade 10 Stars As An Instructor ! Luv Your Videos ! : >)
I came back again this year to review! Thank you, again!❤️ I started my first horizontal Langstroth last year. Your videos taught me so much! Keep up your great tutorials. I'll share and help your channel where I can. Blessings on you and your family.
So happy to see you again. Thanks for the comment. Blessings to you and yours!
Keep up the good work and the good videos I'll bee here watching 🐝
It's an absolute pleasure, Michael. Thanks for joining us on the journey, and for being so awesome to talk with.
I have watched this several times and learned something new every time 😊
Makes me happy to hear that, and I hope you have great success with it at your yard.
#RTBBF !
Another Blue-ribbon explanation, great job covering the process from A-z, . I had a little trouble in the third grade but i understood every step of this split, thanks for sharing...........
Glad it helped! You and me both, haha!
Great show.
#RTBBF !
Thank you. So well explained! Calm, organised and beautiful calm bees.
Thanks David! We've been truly blessed with a calm bee yard. We've had some angry boxes in the past, and that's no fun. Thanks for watching!
Outstanding videos, thank you.
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching!
My first year almost done, after mid summer bear attacks, new queen during attacks, living in northern vt winters very harsh, but to my surprise I have more bees then going into winter, looking to try my first split soon, this is excellent video for all beekeepers very informative
Sounds like you've had a rough go at it this year, but I'm glad to hear you're still going. Good luck!
Enjoyed your presentation, very clear and understanding
Thanks Melvin! We appreciate you watching.
Excellent video, well filmed and narrated. Thanks for taking the time to disseminate the info that you do. Much appreciated.
Much appreciated! Thanks for watching, Ted. ❤️
What a fantastically clear video! I almost gave up when you were talking for what seemed to be ages at the beginning but then you got right into it and I was hooked! So glad I continued watching. This has reinforced what I understood from one of my beekeeping books. Thank you! Uk
Wet glad you stayed with us.
Sorry very glad.
Thanks John more great info! One of the things I enjoy most about these videos is you taking a high level of expertise and breaking it down so it is very easy to underatand. Look at those subscriptions come up!
We've been extremely blessed. It's thanks to people like you. Thanks for always being in our corner, Shane. ❤️
Thanks for making the video. You did a great job of making it clear, and continuous. I appreciate the work you put in.
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching.
good vid............i am a fairly inexpierenced bee keeper of 8 years and a friend has 30 plus hives........i have learned much from you and I THANK YOU!
You are so welcome, John! We love to hear about our fellow beekeepers and their journeys in beekeeping. Keep up the good work!
Best split instructions on UA-cam! Great video.
Wow, thanks! We appreciate you watching.
I got my Bee's last April 2020. I have watched a lot of videos prior to getting my Bee's, this video is one of the best videos I have seen by far about bees on UA-cam! It was very clear and easy to understand. I have subscribed and waiting for your next video thank you
Great to hear! We appreciate you watching, Randy. Let us know if we can ever be of service or answer questions.
@@CentralBeekeepersSupply Thank you
Thank you from Flinders Australia for your wonderful detailed explanations, great humour and excellent camera work showing how to split a hive, plus the tips on the feeder insert and location options for drift.
Thanks, John. Very timely and goes along with our conversation last week.
Very welcome. Thanks for watching. :-)
Very clear and understood on making a split. You can't make any better than that. ❤🐝🐝🐝👍
I appreciate that! Thanks for the comment, Michael!
Everything looked great you also went thru every step of this split very well. I think the system you have for doing your splits is very easy to do and understanding . Thanks for your info an time . 🐝👍🐝
Thank you, Kathy! Every keeper does things a little differently, so feel free to add your own flare. Let us know if you need anything! Thanks for watching.
Very informative. As a new beekeeper, I found the posting very well done.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the comment.
Thank you!
Keep us updated as to whether the now queenless hive makes out ,and thank you for the demo
Will do! We appreciate you watching!
Wow! Great video! Thank you for being so thorough!
Glad you enjoyed it! We appreciate you watching!
I will try this method in a couple months. Thanks for the great info and you explain very well.😊
No problem! Thanks for watching.
Excellent questions and ones I needed the answers to also. Thanks for asking!
Cool. I'm not a bee keeper but I think watching and learning about them kinda neat. 👍🏼
This is by far the best explained and presented video of how to do a split. Thank you very much, I will be following your direction in the upcoming weeks.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching. 🐝
Nice video. Brand new to bee keeping. I really want to do this spring 2023
Good luck! Thanks for watching! Give us a shout if you have any questions.
Thanks for the detailed explanation. This was very easy to understand and comprehend. We’re amateur beekeepers trying to develop more skills. This was a really great help! Sincerely, River Smith and family.
Glad it was helpful River, keep rolling that beautiful bee footage!
We appreciate it.
All of your videos are fabulous. So greatful to you for sharing your experience with us. Thanks so much
So nice of you.
Just started watching. Good information. I just ordered hive feeders like what your using. Got to be simpler than top feeding! Thanks.

Best video I have ever seen on Beekeeping. Thanks so much.
So nice of you Tony. Thanks for watching!
Going into my 3rd year. My mentor was killed in a motorcycle accident when I started. My husband is allergic to bee sting.
My club is wonderful but Covid stopped our meetings. I have a telephone mentor but he is 50 miles away. With all that blah blah said I have been learning by trial and error pretty much on my own.
Your videos have been a God send.
Thank you so much for the time you take. Greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry to hear about your mentor passing. Although we won't be able to fill those shoes, we hope the videos help. Thanks for watching!
Susan, I am in no georgia as well. Where are you located? I will be getting my first bees in May. John's videos are great!!

How come the bees from the original box, after realizing that the queen is gone, just don't move to the new box with everyone else? Thank you for your channel
I have wondered that same thing in the past. But I believe that they are caught off guard and just can't respond that quickly to her being gone because her pheromones are still present along with a lot of open brood. Great Question! #RTBBF Thanks for watching!
I was hoping to find out a little more about the queen excluder, when it's used, where it's used, and an explanation of the total purposes for which it is used. These are very informative videos and we appreciate you sharing your knowledge and your bees with us!
Makes it so the Queen won’t lay eggs in the upper areas so you can get egg free honey
Blessings from Puerto Rico, I'm inspired by you to become a bee keeper, I'm 85 year old Vietnam Veteran wanting to live longer. Any tips are appreciated.
