    Those of you who are wondering what that little TV screen box in the cab is, that is the PTC monitor (Positive Train Control) or CDU (Cab Display Unit) that is something that all class 1 railroad are supposed to have, what it does is if there's an emergency or if they're getting a little too close to that tail of any train on the mainline it will automatically setup the brakes and the train will start to slow down and come to a stop. What it also does is it displays the speed, the track chart, signals, GPS, etc... CP 2816 was the first to develop a full solo PTC system just for the locomotive itself and UP Big Boy 4014 was the next to convert their LeapTC to full. Hyce did a video on it just recently.

    I've watched thousands of trains videos. Spent many hours track side. I love every aspect of railroading but one thing is for sure. I can never get bored or tired watching a steam locomotive operate. What I'd give to be part of a cabin crew on a steam locomotive.

    One thing I learned from firing with oil was not to look directly into the firedoor peep hole lest you get singed eyebrows but to watch the stack color.

    The raw power of steam is amazing, it took diesels electrics quite a while before they took over the place of steam, still in awe of the engineering 😀 thanks guys 🙏

    Well ATSF 2926 is a beautiful locomotive too bad the New Mexico Steam Locomotive & Railroad Historical Society can't run her very far from their site due to the policies of Union Pacific, BNSF Railway, and Amtrak won't allow it to run on their mainline. And maybe someday the society will team up with a class I railroad like BNSF Railway to allow it to do excursions away from Albuquerque which BNSF Railroad has allowed Santa Fe 3751 to run on their rails in California which is a head scratcher.

    • @chooch1764
      @chooch1764 2 місяці тому

      The society is working with the state of New Mexico to eventually operate excursions on NM DOT tracks out of Albuquerque.

      Hopefully that will include trips to Lamy, NM... That's were NMDoT runs out and becomes BNSF @@chooch1764

    Much more work, would be to turn this into a mini-video operator’s instruction - explanation of the whistles - the nice description near the front I didn’t understand - was it the blow-down ??? The valve that the engineer turned. (you explained - cylinder cock - excellent). And so on.

    I assume the rope on the left is for the bell, but the bell must also have a automatic mode. My question is in automatic mode of the bell; why do both ropes on the right and the left move in time with the bell ringer. The one on the right is for the whistle?

    Are they going to run this locomotive past the last semaphores around Wagon Mound, NM or is PTC going to kill that idea?

    Will we ever see this engine running over restricted speed?

    • @chooch1764
      @chooch1764 Місяць тому

      Of course we will. Folks from New Mexico Heritage Rail have mentioned they are preparing a new home for 2926 (the Old Santa Fe shops in Albuquerque) and work with BNSF, Amtrak, and NM DOT on mainline excursions out of Albuquerque. Patience is a virtue.

      I fired several 2900 in1947 48 sure wish we had those air seats. No speed dials just tell tale graphs. The water glass where al lot longer. We used extra ones as straws for the water tank hung on the tender. No radio just coal oil lanterns .In my opinion the 2900 series was the best all around engine .And she was fast seen 90mph more then once

      @@robertthoman5271I had a late friend who fired on the NYC.
      Worked his way up to management, and retired as a Superintendent of the Detroit Belt Ry., owned by Conrail.
      I would have loved to have worked for Chessie System, but never got hired.
