Yeah, I’ve only been able to experience that once so far but it’s pretty great. Similar to Smash TV in how you have to coordinate and work cooperatively.
Would've been nice to actually hear the audio in this video instead of the CD soundtrack which is from a Genesis emulator. The graphics look pretty much indecipherable to me compared to the Genesis other than maybe a hair darker.
I considered that. I really didn’t like the constant gunfire sound effect mixed in. It could have just been me growing annoyed by it while editing but I couldn’t handle it, muted the track, and then dropped in the CD audio you mentioned.
@@GameSack Yep, I get you. Since it's a mixing issue I considered how prevalent it would even sound to someone listening on a phone. But you're right, I could have swapped between tracks at that point.
I love this game, I have it for the Genesis and now I have it for the Neo Geo MVS. As much as I appreciate the wow factor on the Neo Geo, the sound issues it has was kind of a let down. To make matters worse for me, the collector's edition I purchased arrived in terrible shape from it's journey across the pond. Most of the collectors items inside, including the mvs box where damaged. When you pay top dollar for something, your expectations are high. Should have stuck with the Genesis version.
If the actual MVS box had been damaged for me I’d have been irate. That’s a dealbreaker. I don’t understand why the DIP settings sheets weren’t protected inside the kit box like they normally are. It’s just too bad it shipped this way. I don’t think it would be terribly unreasonable to ask for a replacement box.
I'm really happy to see that you got your MVS copy my dude! It took quite awhile, but it was worth it. I also got my Neo Geo CD copy and its been a wild ride playing it. The NGCD pad makes the controls more bearable since the face buttons are in a circular/diamond configuration and the thumbpad also makes it feel really nice to move the character around. Though I haven't tested this yet, I have a theory that my custom 6-button fightstick with turbo function might bring a few added surprises to the gameplay, but I'm not sure yet. The CD audio, which has become my favorite aspect of the NGCD when compared to carts since obtaining it, is also a treat to listen to. Like you, however, my copy of Xeno Crisis had a bit of a rough ride getting to my house because my copy showed up with a large crack on the front of the jewel case. Nothing else was damaged and jewel cases are super easy to replace, it was just annoying. Either way, its always fun to listen to you talk about Neo Geo stuff. :)
I love playing Xeno Crisis on the Evercade. Beat it on easy with out using an elixir to get the good ending. Working on completing it in hard. I really love this game as I'm a huge fan of twin stick shooters
I saw the controller for the Evercade and it looks like a more ideal setup. I can probably beat this on easy on the Neo but there is no way I’m finishing it on hard without multiple continues and/or elixirs.
I love this game on the Switch, wish the Neo Geo version wasn't so expensive! My 2 slot cab would love it, and I'd have an excuse to stop suffering through my 1CC attempt of Viewpoint
This is great. Glad you added it to your collection. Looking forward to one day seeing your finished basement arcade. Remember what I said last year, don't cheap out. Get the best materials and finishes you can afford for your space. You'll thank me and visitors will be amazed. Everytime I have people over they're amazed. Looking forward to your Gamroom being completed. Keep up the great work.
Aside from stashing money aside I’m no closer to finishing off that space than I was a few months ago. Definitely saving up to do it right though. I miss my projector and screen maybe most of all.
Agree, Xeno Crisis is an awesome game.. hard as nails though until you get used to the controls. I play it on the Mega Drive and Dreamcast. Looking forward to BB's next game! Great review.
Love Xeno Crisis. Thanks for sharing your experience with the MVS collectors set! Overall seems like they did a great job here. My go-to is the Genesis version in 6 button mode with the firing directions mapped to a second stick. Only good use for the 8bitdo sn30pro I bought a couple years ago, with its lightning fast analog response. Makes up a small bit for the terrible d-pad those controllers ship with. Sony DS4/5 are also perfect for this game I found, since they lack deadzones that the xbox style controllers have. 1000hz polling on twin sticks really makes this one a joy to play.
I’d probably roll with the Genesis version as well if that’s what you have. I kind of went back and forth from playing the two to consider different feelings. The Neo version is great, but not a quantum leap over the Genesis imo and the controls actually set it back just a tad.
@@ScarletSprites With mistercade you can probably combine the dual sticks in your Smash TV cab to use for a proper twin-stick experience in this one also. Only issue there is having quick access to the dodge button which is essential. Foot pedal maybe? lol
Oh wow?! Thank you for this! I’m going to go to their website and see if they still have an AES version available. I still have never played this game, however I have been viewing it from afar since it released for the Genesis.
The Genesis isn’t a bad way to go, especially if you have a way to use a SNES controller with it. I’d really like to try it with true twin stick functionality on Switch or PS4.
@@ScarletSprites I'm fascinated with having the experience of being able to buy and afford a brand new Neo Geo cart in my lifetime 😂. Maybe I just get both? Enjoyed this game a lot on Sega Genesis but for the Neo Geo I simply don’t see the justification getting it for the slight sound & visual “improvements” over the Genesis for the price. Funny thing is I always felt that way about the Neo Geo vs Genesis/SNES during the console wars! and I own multiple Neo Geo AES consoles and games. Really appreciate Neo Geo and it’s history and I love my Neo Geo collection but I only feel the need to collect and play the classic Neo Geo library of games. Just my opinion
I’ve even got this on a very limited Vita physical! ;). Edit: I also have the limited edition set from Strictly Limited for the Switch. It’s amazing to play on the true twin stick style. This is truly one of my favorite newer retro style games. I love it!!
That’s what I’d love to get ahold of; the Switch physical edition. I have to hope for a LRG reprint or something though because I’m not paying $100+ for it.
I love buying new games for old consoles. They always push the limits of what systems can do. My first though with the Geo version was “man, that control is going to be weird.” Still, very cool it is on there. Great vid!
Thanks man. The control is a little awkward and I can’t help but feeling it’s far better off with a twin stick format. I’m just glad it made its way over to the Neo though.
There is also a version of this game for the Evercade (and upcoming Evercade VS). This was the version I got, as I needed a "killer app" for this console at the time. :D
Great stuff. I already have the physical copy for the Mega Drive, so I think I’ll just get the ROM for my NeoSD when it’s available. One cool thing worth mentioning, they do sell a mini marquee separately, so I can still use it in my cab and keep up appearances. Excited to see what ‘Final Vendetta’ might be too? Assuming it’s a brawler (influenced by Final Fight and Vendetta?!) I’ll be an early backer for sure!
Yeah, if I had a physical on another format I’d probably go the rom route as well tbh. I think it’s safe to say that the next game is a brawler for sure. The Neo could really use an A+ caliber one in its library.
As someone who beat the Genesis version on hard I can definitely say the game is a bit unfair difficulty wise. To truly beat the game you must do so without dying once. Though to be fair if they didn't punish you for using lives it would be too easy. I still feel there could have been a better balance though such as allowing only 1 life to get the true ending. Grinding out for that 0 deaths hard mode win was crazy fun though!
This was definitely a good addition to the Neo. And I was curious why the music was only coming out of the right channel... Definitely curious how they're going to fix that...
The fact that it exists is awesome. Sure, it would have been cool if you could choose between an OG BW label or the one you got, but it's kind of hard to see the negatives with it overall!
Yeah I’m not mad about the label at all. I’ll never think about it again. I just had seen comments on forums that were debating it and I really couldn’t care less so long as they put some type of label on there.
This is definitely the video I've been waiting for on this re-release of XenoCrisis without realizing it. I have to wait for the ROM if I want to play it on my MiSTer and was immediately concerned when I saw this version had a rotation combo. I would have been perfectly fine if they had resorted to the 3-button genesis layout instead and was hoping you could disable the rotation combo. Hopefully bitmap addresses this by making it optional instead.
I’m with you on disabling the rotation controls. I looked in the dip settings to see if it were possible. I understand it’s value but I seem to trip over it far more often than finding it useful.
How about a Last Resort live stream? You only get the true ending by finishing the second loop. Really enjoyed the rage on the last, Last Resort video.
Oh gosh, that game live probably wouldn’t be pretty at all. That one infuriates me despite liking it a lot. I should get it back out though and give it a spin.

Do you wish the music soundtrack was using the native chips used for the Neo Geo? As others have shown that the music audio in the Neo Geo version is just recorded Genesis audio. The side by side sounds quite different but at least it's still in stereo. What do you think?
If it weren’t for the Genesis’s ability to produce some truly magical audio scores that might be a travesty. To me the soundtrack really sounds amazing when blaring on the cabinet. I’ve admittedly done some things to assist with that on the cabinet but it’s great nonetheless. I don’t feel shorted in any way.
Got the neo cd version coming and recently pulled the trigger on the mvs version. They are currently fixing the sound issue but im willing to be patient for that.
Yeah it’s going to require sending your cart out to be reflashed. Not something a lot of people can do themselves. Supposedly going to be no cost to the consumer though so that’s cool.
Think thats a kool thing bit map is offering. I bought mine a week ago and they havent shipped it yet so im assuming they'll have it ready to go and fixed when they do.
Hello, my friend! I hope youre doin well. Personally, I really like the labels: This was not an original game for NEO*GEO hardware, and BITMAP doesnt pretend like it is/was--That being said, it should stand out on one's shelf as a curiosity.
I’m with you on that. I think they look good on carts. I also wouldn’t have been mad had they gone the other direction though. I also wouldn’t have minded a throwback Xeno Crisis holo label. I think that would have been an amazing niche nod to old school carts.
Got the original on day one, rinsed it dry, Adore the Genuine FM synth and excellent control (it's rad being able to 'twin-stick' with the ABXY buttons with a single thumb - something not possible for me on any diamond / SNES button layout). Honestly I think they ruined the Dreamcast version because it's just so more difficult - outrageously so IMO (I can get through the MD version consistently but stand no chance on DC mainly due to significantly increased enemy aggression. Absolutely nobody asked for an insane difficulty hike!
I’ve been toying with buying the DC rom to burn because I’ve been curious. I definitely agree that I don’t need this any more difficult than it already is.
Yeah that's not really an optimal control setting. They should have had two fire buttons. One to fire like it does, Shock Troopers style, and then a fire button that locks you in place and allows you to move the stick in the directions you want to fire.
Nice review man, really enjoyed this. Quick question. Have you tried xeno crisis in any slot besides 1? I have an issue with it having no audio (and also causing all my other slots to mute) if xeno is in any slot other than the 1st one. May just be an issue on my end. If you get a chance take a look and let me know. Thanks
@@ScarletSprites thanks for getting back to me. What about issues running it in slot 1? I find if there are other carts in it will cycle past xeno crisis. Might be a unibios specific issue.
They could of used the NEO-GEO CD joy pad to make twin controls For better game play! But I guess Bit Map wasn't smart enough to realize that....(SMHN)...🎮🎮
The tough thing is that the game really requires six buttons. The CD pad would have been great if this didn’t need a button for roll and one for secondary weapon. After spending more time with this I really think the Genesis version is the way to go on cartridge consoles. I’m going to have to try the Switch version at some point.
@@ScarletSprites that's what the select and start button is for it could have been used for those functions as a roll button after all who pauses a Arcade cabinet? This should have been optional controls Arcade stick or Joy Pad. GENESIS version shouldn't have been better. This is just lousy from Bitmap I might sound egregious but I'm right! I was thinking about a year ago Bit Map should have made a special NEO-GEO AES controller with two extra shoulder pad buttons.. But it didn't happen.
It’s inherent to the game though, that’s what I tried to stress in the video. There is no command code in the game that is simply “fire right” as is the case with a Robotron or Smash TV. It’s just not how the game is coded. Anything that gets mapped is a button combo which starts getting messy.
@@ScarletSprites sorry; watched the video on my phone so didn’t see the controls all that well. There might be a “push direction + button” combo that’d work? I haven’t messed with them too much on MiSTer, but I know others have managed to get 4-button fighters like Street Fighter on GBA working as a 6-button one on MiSTer. I’ll try to look more into it and post back; great video, and sorry if it sounded like I didn’t watch it properly 🙂
The Neo version is a tad frustrating with the controls but still fun. I’d definitely go a twin stick route where possible. Glad to hear the Evercade version is good!
Been rocking this on the Genesis for months, love the game. Have not had the pleasure of playing the Neo Geo version, hoping they release a Digital ROM for the rest of us to enjoy this game, I would certainly purchase it... like I did for the Genesis. There is indeed a rom coming for Neo, definitely check it out if you love the game. Thanks for the kind words on the video man. It’s been tough lately.
@@ScarletSprites Good to hear about a ROM coming, def going to purchase that when available as I 100% believe in supporting older hardware with new games. I would MUCH rather buy a game for a past system I love rather then a new whatever game on modern hardware. I dunno, I think the old hardware was better
I’ve got this on my Xbox and on my sega megadrive and I just cannot justify the price tag to buy the mvs version. It’s a decent game but it’s not worth paying for again.
I wouldn’t. If I didn’t have the cabinet and affinity for Neo I would stick with another format as well. I definitely wouldn’t buy it multiple times (or any game for that matter).

Think thats a kool thing bit map is offering. I bought mine a week ago and they havent shipped it yet so im assuming they'll have it ready to go and fixed when they do.
I have the fiscal PSVITA version!! 😄 and is awesome!
That’s cool, I had no idea there was a Vita version.
I missed out on this one, but thinking about Final Vendetta for pre order. Are you grabbing this new one?
I’ll probably pay for the rom to load on the NeoSD. I have Vendetta for Switch and PC and can confirm it’s pretty great!
Playing this with anything other than a modern, twin-stick gamepad sounds like a nightmare. If I ever pick this up, it'll be the Windows version.
Thanks
Yes, I ran it in slot 2 on my MV4F and it was fine.
@@ScarletSprites thanks for getting back to me. What about issues running it in slot 1? I find if there are other carts in it will cycle past xeno crisis. Might be a unibios specific issue.
Doesn't this use twin stick on PS4? And if so why not include options for both. This would also work really well with rotary controls.
Probably? I’m assuming it does for Switch as well. I’d go one of those routes.
They could of used the
NEO-GEO CD joy pad
to make twin controls
For better game play!
I was thinking about a year ago
Bit Map should have made a special NEO-GEO AES controller with two extra shoulder pad buttons..
But it didn't happen.
You might be able to make it a twin stick shooter on MiSTer (where you’re able to map button combinations to single inputs)?
Great video. I have Xeno Crisis for the Neo Geo. Have you ever played it? Maybe you should do a video on it?
Thank you sir. Would you mind pressing play?
(Never replies)
Works great on evercade and way cheaper. Dig the whole thing though. Seems like the neo geo version may get a bit frustrating with the control.
The Neo version is a tad frustrating with the controls but still fun. I’d definitely go a twin stick route where possible. Glad to hear the Evercade version is good!
Playing it on my Evercade, whatever that is.
Nice, lol
@@ScarletSprites the diamond four button layout really works well, like SNES Super Smash TV.
So I’ll ask, What was the amiibo? Dark Samus?
Terry Bogard of course.
@@ScarletSprites what was I thinking lol, great review. Going to get the Switch version.
Been rocking this on the Genesis for months, love the game. Have not had the pleasure of playing the Neo Geo version, hoping they release a Digital ROM for the rest of us to enjoy this game, I would certainly purchase it... like I did for the Genesis. Excellent game! Awesome video dude, I have noticed your production quality going up more and more. 10/10 man
There is indeed a rom coming for Neo, definitely check it out if you love the game.
Wonder if it's mask rom or not. Probably not unfortunately
If anyone knows let me know plz
I’ve got this on my Xbox and on my sega megadrive and I just cannot justify the price tag to buy the mvs version. It’s a decent game but it’s not worth paying for again.
I wouldn’t. If I didn’t have the cabinet and affinity for Neo I would stick with another format as well. I definitely wouldn’t buy it multiple times (or any game for that matter).
@@ScarletSprites there’s people in the Neo geo groups on Facebook going nuts for this game. It’s like Christmas came early.
C'mon, you know you want to rig this to be played via a trackball, and Donkey Kong bongos...
Haha, if I can find the Monkeyball banana controller I’m doing it.
@@ScarletSprites You're such a great sport :D Go full on twin banana.
