    The native people of the North American Arctic share a deep and enduring connection with dogs that spans centuries. In this harsh and unforgiving environment, dogs have played a pivotal role in the survival and cultural heritage of indigenous communities. Serving as loyal companions, invaluable working partners, and symbols of resilience, these dogs have left an indelible mark on the history and way of life of the Arctic's native people. They've been crucial for transportation, hunting, warmth, and have held a significant place in Arctic traditions, stories, and art. This enduring partnership between humans and dogs is a testament to the ingenuity and adaptability of Arctic cultures, enriching the history of both the people and their loyal four-legged companions.

    Hello everyone, I'm Arianna, the scriptwriter for this video! I've loved working with North02 on this project as I'm very fond of northern dogs and Inuit. As this was my first ever script for a documentary, I would love to have some feedback from you all, especially if you are Inuk! Hope you enjoy the video!

      @@leondrolet8695hello, unfortunately there are little to none written Inuit sources. Almost all the sources come from early explorers and anthropologists, like Franz Boas and Knud Rasmussen. It is important to remember that they were European or American (even though Rasmussen was born in Greenland) so their views and studies would definitely be warped by their own culture and world views. You can find sources in the description

    I'm a very big fan of North 02. I've seen all of his videos multiple times. This is easily one of his best videos. I'm obsessed with prehistoric human evolution and there are not a lot of videos on this specific topic. The script writer did an excellent job and North O2 delivers another amazing narration and great art. You guys should be very proud of yourselves

      Content is great. I love your videos and have watched all. But you are reading faster here than I've ever seen. I'm hoping you will read subsequent ones before because a big strength is your typical cadence of your voice. There's a lot of dense facts so I think, also, your typical delivery allows people to process it all in time not to miss it. I know you value feedback and all prior I've ever had is positive so I'm telling you the truth. @@NORTH02

    I knew a guy who was up there for a winter with the Inuit and a older dog couldn't keep up so he let him off the harness and he eventually fell so far behind they couldn't see him and when asked what would happen to the dog he was told that if he made it back then he'd become mittens... 2 years later the Sam guy went back up north and saw mittens (that's what he called the dog )outside the house and when asked why he's still alive the Inuit man said " well the wife and the kids and ..." Lol times are always changing for everyone I guess

    It's interesting to hear about dogs being used to teach young people how to be mothers or to teach responsibility. That still happens inthe modern day. Kids are often given pets to teach them to be responsible, and often people call a young couple's first dog their "practice baby". It's funny how some things don't change

    My last dog was a pure bred Siberian Husky that I got at 8 weeks. I eventually had him trained to the point that a leash wasn't needed in any environment urban or rural, mountain biking or bar hopping. I'd give a command and he would obey. It was one of the most difficult things I've ever done and required an e-collar, but the result was a dog more free and more happy than most will ever know. Huskies are probably the hardest breed to train and not the most suitable pet for most people, but they're my favorite.
    Pros:
    - don't smell that bad
    - great mountain biking and skiing companion.
    - good travel dog if trained well.
    - very social, great with any other dog, big or small, old or young, friendly or not. Good pack dog.
    - gentle and great around babies and children.
    - very smart, funny and expressive.
    - super pretty.
    - will sing for you
    Cons:
    - don't listen, don't care, I do what I want.
    - will run away, about 50% disappear.
    - Super high maintenance. Males blow coat twice a year. Mine was long haired and required brushing out the undercoat to prevent mats and skin issues, which can take at least an hour every few days for a couple months.
    - High prey drive, will try to kill anything not human or dog. This can include cats, chickens, horses, cows, sheep, goats, etc.
    - won't guard or protect, doesn't bark at strangers stopping buy unannounced, friendly instead.
    - known for destroying furniture, beds and clothes, cars, etc.
    - escape artists. Will dig holes under the fence to get out.
    - very high exercise requirements.
    - aloof and not all that affectionate sometimes.
    - loyalty can take years to establish.

      @@ConontheBinarianI have a husky mix and that is exactly my goal. Work on recall while on leash and then let him off to explore. However sometimes he comes right away, other times I’m not interesting enough (no matter how high value the treat I have with me is!). Then my problem is if I go get him and put him on a leash (he won’t run away from me ever) then that isn’t positive reinforcement. However, if I just wait for him to come back to me and give him his reward then I’m assuming that teaches him he can come back to me whenever he wants and he will always get a treat. Any tips? 😅

      @@colettewatkins8860call him when u see him coming back to you by his own and reward him every time.

      @NORTH02 my daughters dog is half husky/ Sheppard mix. I was walking him late one night and we heard a man one street over raise his voice at someone. Milo tore away from me and ran home. Are huskies known for being at all protective?
      Edit- oh "wont guard or protect" 😂

    • @solitudessilentgroove

      @@ConontheBinarian
      That's awesome! I know how much work that takes, and you are obviously a good pack leader :)
      I tried the long lead, positive reinforcement and food rewards for many months. The food had no sway on him. I would use home cooked bacon carried in a treat pouch, and he would ignore it when excited. I had a 100' long lead made of clothesline, which is smooth and doesn't get caught up trees and stuff. One time we were hiking and he saw another dog, got exited and ran around her several times then took off. The long lead effectively hog tied her and when he ran it swiped her feet from under her violently. Her owners were upset but understanding. That was when I started looking for other options.
      You're right that e-collars can damage the spirit of a dog if not done correctly, and they're often misused. I spent 3 months researching before I even put it on him. I wouldn't have chosen this path if I wasn't already at my wits end literally trying every other training technique. I just wanted to be able to hike and bike without losing him, but the result was he completely obeyed me. It even saved his life one night when I called him off a deer that ran into traffic.

    You should do a video about the Sámi people of Northern Europe.

    • @Jmvars
      @Jmvars 10 місяців тому +13

      Hey, I'm Sámi. Was thinking some of this sounds similar to Sámi reindeer herders relationship with dogs as herding dogs. There's even multiple dog breeds historically used by the Sámi for herding reindeer. We also name our dogs based on their appearance, I used to have a black dog named "Čáhppe", the Sámi word for black is "Čáhppat". My dad had a white dog named "Vilge", Sámi word for white is "vielgat", you get the idea.

    A recommendation: a video about Fuegians and specifically the Yaghan people. Super fascinating people - cold adapted and possibly even some genetic signatures or other characteristics found in Australian Aboriginals which suggests at least partial descent from a very early migration into the Americas. Also the southernmost people in the world.

    • @nickearls2381
      @nickearls2381 10 місяців тому +3

      @B0bb217 I know they have found some aboriginal genetic signatures in Amazon tribes but the Yaghan connection might not actually be proven and seems to be more of a theory. My thought on the aboriginal connection is a shared ancestor that was once spread throughout Asia as well as Australia very early on in the history of modern humans in Asia. Then some made it to the Americas and over time all the way to Tierra del Fuego. I would imagine subsequent, more familiar migrations then absorbed these first Americans, but isolated areas like Tierra del Fuego and certain pockets of the Amazon preserved some traits from the original migration. Pure speculation though, I'm not a scientist I just love this shit

    I can't help but imagine all this through the lens of a modern day dog owner. I lost my best friend two months ago (cancer) so I can really understand how dogs would be such a huge factor in these cultures. Going so far as to give their dogs full burials, even. And while I get these dogs were workers, not pets, I still don't think I could ever beat a dog as a form of punishment. To hear this was standard practice for an entire society just churns my stomach.

    • @Pierce1996h
      @Pierce1996h 10 місяців тому +12

      Beatings as a form of punishment is a norm for many cultures unfortunately and its not restricted to just "pets" people think its fine to hit your kids and it won't make them anxious or violent or both. It makes sense considering we are also animals and just kind of slightly smarter monkeys

    My mom was woman council of Nunavut and head of domestic violence abuse center so i understand she was busy too.

Sometimes individual words are said so fast it sounds like a glitch in audio. I can't say it's your fault at all, but the video was much less enjoyable, I am truly sorry to say. I think one the greatest thing about North's videos is his measured delivery delivery and that is largely lost. Please tell him. This would give early peoples a reason to keep breeding friendly 'house' dogs for the family and not just super obedient pack dogs that aren't very friendly.

    *Maybe consider doing other readings in the future as well? The canon of brilliant 19c female writers --Bronte, Elliot, Austen, etc., for starters? For some reason I find they are mostly female narrators, and these works would benefit from a beautiful male voice, such as your own, North 02. ❤

    One little suggestion, pls. use less fast-zoom in/out transitions, makes me dizzy.

    Something i find interesting is that so far, no other species of homo domesticated any type of animals so dogs were the key to changing the way we viewed animals and, therefore the world. They helped us evolve as much as we helped them.

    Sadly, the problem with finding archaeological sites is probably due to the lower sea levels. Chances are that most of the evidence is under water and gone forever.

    I suspect this was more in the sound mixing step rather than the script writing, but there were a few small dead zones at the very start of the video where there was a noticeable silence. Nothing wrong with a pregnant pause, but I think in this genre of video, a distinct lack of sound can be distracting.

    I think you need to update your "humans first came to the Americas" to be more in step with modern archaeology. It is no longer generally agreed when humans first got here, nor even how they got here. The may have across Beringia, but then again maybe not. A newer, and to me much more likely hypothesis, is that they came across the Aleutian chain and the down the coast. Other's claim that Polynesians came across the Pacific, though geneticists are disinclined to agree with this one.
    As archaeology advances, the "When?" should become more resolved, but we'll probably never have a truly satisfying answer to the "How?" as most of the evidence we need rests about 30M below current sea level.
    This is meant as constructive criticism. I do enjoy the channel!

    - ... well... a goddess totally does live in the sea.
