Out of the Woods have you ever sawn a log that has been pulled out of a lake / pond ? Maybe something that has been submerged for a decade or so ? Would love to see what’s inside if you have a log like that .
No offense but holding info back like you said ain't fair to use disabled first responders who live for UA-cam and can't afford it or able. But still love your stuff lol got hooked when I found out you was a first responder
Oh my, how I am delighted to help support you in all your works and ways! You don’t know it, but we spend many a night together! You are a good friend keeping me and my insomnia company. I came across your channel late one night, all innocent of the whole and entire universe of sawyer and turner. What a joy, you and all your brothers are so skilled, learned, and darn right talented in what you do! I have now learned to see a tree in a whole new light. May the universe keep watch over you in all your works and ways.
Long ago I worked with a little chainsaw milled "flame" box elder and had not laid eyes on the finished project in 20+ years. Sadly, in time the red staining oxidizes to a lack luster brown regardless of finish used. Ive read a great deal about "flame" box elder. The best commentary Ive read so far was by an author that suggested if it were hermetically sealed then stored in total darkness the red fungus staining may last a bit longer but it aint staying no matter what. Fer sure gorgeous while it last.
I have some pieces of box elder and Osage orange, both of which I have read loose their color over time due to either oxidization or UV exposure. I've been testing using a combination of penetrating exterior oil, with a UV blocker, and an interior finish to seal and protect the coloring. So far I've had BE and OO sit in a sunny room, not direct sunlight, for a couple months with no color change. It will be interesting to see how they hold up after a year or so.
Nathan....than grain pattern...utterly fantastic. I keep picturing solid body guitars being made from those slabs. just imagine with a deep polyurethane finish showing off that flame...breathtaking. but hey, im just a dreamer...hey to everyone from me n ol crazy cat tommy.
I must say....you have almost single-handedly changed the way I look at trees. When I take a hike or a walk I sometimes just stop and stare at a big tree and wonder what it must look like inside. I live in the Pacific Northwest and we have the most beautiful old growth forests.
Clarity of opening drone sequence is next level!?! Those slabs are absolutely gorgeous Nathan. Love turning other peoples “trash” into treasure! Keep slabbing em up 👍🏼
I can vouch for that idea. I work for a company that builds high-end mountain dulcimers, and box elder tops are one of our best sellers. Mix it with a hard exotic for your back & sides and you won't be disappointed
That is beautiful wood. Wish we had this type of wood in Montana. I was wondering however why there is so much saw blade marks? Is it the type of blade you use, a dull blade or movement during sawing? Really like your channel, have learned a lot...
Between you and Stinnett Sticks...i have very little stress in my life just from watching these educational and relaxing videos. Thank you and take care.
Growing up there was a lot of box elder around my childhood home. Loved climbing them till they got run over with box elder bugs every so often. Thank you for showing how lovely their wood is.
Just discovered your channel a couple days ago, i would absolutely love to take some of the wood you cut and make a guitar out of it, just a light staining, or even just a clear coat to finish it. Just absolutely gorgeous Materials.
As you were looking at the rot, I thought about how to clean it out in case the other side was very good. The other side is great. It wouldn't take much to get that rot out.
WooooooooooW the colors of gold, gray, white and red!!!!!!!!!!!!! Looks almost fake or man made but we all know it was mother nature and God who made this log!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The endless possibilities what one could make from the slabs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great Job!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Felt like Pavlov's dog -- AFTER THE BELL HAD BEEN RUNG!!! Those slabs were gorgeous, and I could not help but drool! Thank you for sharing. Best wishes from a Kate in Olympia, WA.
Will the box elder retain the vibrant colors after drying and sanding? Was wondering as some other species tend to lose some color. Hoping it stays with a final application of monocoat
I hope in the end you have a good yield from this. Box elder is garbage wood - it twists and splits more than anything I've ever used. I've also thrown more money in the trash with box elder than any other specie. Hopefully yours will come out of the kiln looking as good as they did going in.
Cool stuff man 👍, I appreciate you're hard work to bring us videos and music that takes my mind to a peaceful place, God bless you and your family brother
I would like to know if you sell pieces that would be suitable for making a pool cue out of ? I am not sure how that wood would hold up, but I bet it would make one of the best looking cues in the world !!!
Wonderful color in each slab. I would guess these we sell like hot cakes. Great job setting up the camera for the visualizations for each slab! Thank you for sharing.
Box elder is pretty and works farely well a type of maple was the pith centered well ? If a tree grows at an angle the pith will be off center creating what they call reactionary wood wich will warp bad after its dried in the milling process if it isnt reaction ary you got some pretty wood dont saw much box elder
I need to find out where you are in Tennessee. We're heading your way, hopefully late summer, for a rescheduled vacation. I see a one way trailer rental in our future...lol. Wow, that is some beautiful wood.

Wow! How breath taking am I at the beautiful natural creations. It’s mind boggling. Love it!!!!
Oh My ... that slab's like looking at marble on a church altar - beautiful.
I love your musical, visual introductions. Art just comes out of you all the time, I reckon.
More beautiful slabs. No matter what the log looks like when you start, we're never disappointed with the final product.
thanks William,
Maybe others have been commenting on your UA-cam videos but I must say you're choice of music and the information you have provided is Great.
Thanks. Appreciate you sir

So many colors. That's crazy!!! I can't wait to move back to a place with trees
I think you have made Box Elder one of my new favorite wood grains!
beautiful the color just radiates.
I throughly enjoy the packages you unwrap. Thanks for allowing trees to live on for many years.
Phenomenally beautiful just gorgeous
Wow! That is unbelievable! Just gorgeous
Has to be one of the most beautiful slabs I have ever seen. Thank you so very much for sharing your craft!
Beautiful coloring in those slabs, that's for sure.
Nice opening shots “into the light” lovely photography.

Good point Wesley. I would love to get my hands on one of those slabs but being in the UK I have to keep dreaming.
Apple is a good looking grained wood. Hard wood to work with, takes a long time drying, but irresistible challenging
Worth the effort and time.
Nice Very Nice.. The wood... the Video... the presentation.... I loved it, Kudos

Indeed.
Agreed

My thoughts exactly. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's where the money's at with this.

Wouldn’t an offcut make an interesting rifle/shotgun stock- especially for something you would normally furnish with a light coloured or fancy wood?
God may give provide the canvas but YOU are truly the artist!
Fantastic shop too!
Oh Nathan, My favourite wood 🌟and my two favourite pieces of music,🌟🌟 it doesn't get any better. Thank you. 🌟🌟
So many beautiful hues hidden in this tree.
Another nice one Nathan, thanks for sharing.

Beautiful, Nathan! #KeepTheChipsFlying!
You fill that punky wood with CA glue and it will be just fine! Some of us woodturners do it all the time !
Felt like Pavlov's dog -- AFTER THE BELL HAD BEEN RUNG!!! Those slabs were gorgeous, and I could not help but drool! Thank you for sharing. Best wishes from a Kate in Olympia, WA.
thanks for watching!
Mother Nature has the best colors!!
Wow georgeous!
That's a beautiful log, even with the punky stuff.
Thanks Hank 👍👍
Wow, what beautiful slabs.
Fire and carbon!! WOW, spectacular box elder!!

Those are some gorgeous slabs! Does the flame color persist after drying and finishing?
*WOW*
Honey paused while she was reading to exclaim how beautiful the slabs were and then asked if there were more videos.
Damn, that is beautiful wood. My mind is running wild trying to figure out what to do with it!!! I have "wood lust"!!!!
Your intro cinematography is on point, brother. I know it's a bunch of work. Well done...
I hope in the end you have a good yield from this. Box elder is garbage wood - it twists and splits more than anything I've ever used. I've also thrown more money in the trash with box elder than any other specie. Hopefully yours will come out of the kiln looking as good as they did going in.

Just beautiful
Hey Nathan, good to see you still loving your work. Nice slabs.
Sir. Your videos introduced me to the intro song. And few songs move me to my soul quite like that song. Love it when you bring that song back out.
The deep woods drone shots in your last couple videos have been excellent. Enjoying this box elder, too.
These slabs would make amazing kitchen counters.
The very reason I go to the woods and wonder as I look at the different trees there the beauty that God has hidden before us.
I would like to know if you sell pieces that would be suitable for making a pool cue out of ? I am not sure how that wood would hold up, but I bet it would make one of the best looking cues in the world !!!
Awesome coloring.
Many many thanks
Wow great looking lumber nice job 👍

I confirm : for a joiner/cabinetmaker like me it's definitely firewood.
You put on video and illustrate what the Lord has created and it's majesty! Thank you !
Very nice cuts the projects going off in my head damn very nice
Love box elder. Only problem with it is how much it likes to twist during the drying process
Box elder is pretty and works farely well a type of maple was the pith centered well ? Enjoyed that one, Nathan. Thanks for keeping the cameras rolling!
Christmas in November is right! Thanks Kindly Nathan! DaveyJO in Pa.
Dam good looking firewood boards
Would look perfect in a canyon ranch table
What song is that in the intro and who is singing it?
Those are spectacular slabs!!
thanks,
Wow those were very beautiful slabs you don’t see something like that every day.
I think it would be really cool to mount a camera on the arm of the saw to follow the cuts...Thats next level! Keep up the good work!
I need to find out where you are in Tennessee. We're heading your way, hopefully late summer, for a rescheduled vacation. I see a one way trailer rental in our future...lol. Wow, that is some beautiful wood.
Please do!
Awesome! That is fantastic!
wow That may be the best yet!
Man, what an interesting high quality video. I have used a saw like that, but much simpler. Forgive my ignorance, but what do you use the slabs for?
They are sold to woodworkers 👍👍
Oddly satisfying watching this. Thanks!
thanks,
That is a pretty fancy mill.
Everyone seems to love the red flame colour, that disappears with a few days of sunlight on it, correct?
Does it? I was wondering just how fast the colours were and if there is any method of fixing them.
Do you ever have guitar luthiers looking to purchase some tone woods ???
I really liked the music at the end, almost sounded like P. Glass.
Great looking wood.
