people say others shouldve won, but its good that he won, he had the most creativity with a good balance of grooving and showing off his chops. plus he was hella clean with all his rolls and fills and was the only one using a 4 pc kit. gotta give props for that.
The drums sounds great in this vid,it's not only just the engineer whom mixed the drums on the recent drum off's but comes down to the tone you get from the other kits they used plus the drummer showcasing their skills
I think he deserved the win. He wasn't the best competitor technically, but his solo was beyond clean no mistakes at all. I think a big thing that separated him was the opening and the ending. The beginning was a very creative idea open with 20th century fox like a movie almost. And it ended bad ass as well grabbing the hi hat and walking away. He just executed his solo the best and showed the most confidence. I think he deserved it that's just me tho.

But in musical talent I would say I think tony Taylor jr is better. But I would have to see both of them have a drum battle and see that way. Straight up right now though tony Taylor jr is better

what you owe god for being born with this kind of talent is to work hard enough to bring it out (barring disability) - god is the sculptor only in that he guides your hand as you cut away the marble - have the faith to press on as your muscles fatigue, marble chips sting you, sweat rolls into your eyes - when there is no more to cut away, never apologize for your ability, but never take credit for it - put faith above all, even if you don't believe in a deity - and be humble!

whats just as amazing as this guys skills and technique behind a kit...is his nod to buddy rich and the west side story drum solo with integration of buddys tricks into his own,fucking incredible drummer!

I had the privaledge of being a Judge at last years competition and I can tell u that just playing a groove will not get u anywhere, U R judge on technicality, originality, versatility and showmanship. Like any competition you need to show as much variety and versatility as possible.
at 1:15 dude just starts killin!!....he switches from a fill on the drums to the same fill on the cymbals then throws in paradiddles while changing the sound of the snare with his leg!!....thats why he won. for originality.
That'll be because there's other drummers that have played or are due to play on that same kit and have differences as to how they like their kit set up to be, so the venue has to anticipate and compensate for this.

@slangster The thing is they (as in the drum off champions) do these things quickly with technicality and great quality dynamics and control and consistency. None of it is sloppy, it's all nice and fixed. That being said if you can pull that off, you can make some really impressive drum solos. On the other hand, a lot of people can play something quick but if it lacks sound quality and good heights or dynamics it just sounds and looks sloppy and terrible.

Some people just like to rock the one-up one-down setup. It's pretty common; it let's you bring the ride cymbal in closer for one thing.
