A great aspect of half guard is that you don't have to pass, you can end the game right there and then. This loop choke is an excellent option when you get the grip and are ready to end the game.

An alternative option would be to grab that lapel at the bottom of your ribcage with your free hand and pull it toward your waist while turning your head away from their body. It's an old school lapel choke defense and isn't perfect, but might work in this case as a last ditch defense. Especially since that grip is relatively weak and they might not be expecting it.

This is cool. It seems like the bottom guy could very easily put his head on the mat to counter it.
I think once the elbow hits the floor that, even if they pin their head to the floor, you can pull the lapel through and hit the choke. But I'm going to test that theory tonight
