    When they say “...as much % savings...” exposure (direction roof faces) is another factor other than just zone. To get those savings you’d need a mono-truss design with a southern exposure or flatt roof. Most consumers would see less.
    Roof design can play just as big of roll in heat load savings by minimizing southern facing roof surfaces.

    I have learned that a metal paneled roof with screws ( not "standing seam" which is 3 times the cost of a panels roof) is only slightly more than an asphalt roof. The quote i got was $700 more for the metal over the asphalt. The metal quote came in at $27100 for 67 square. ( a square in roofing terminology is 100 sf ) The main reason for the narrow difference is no removal of current asphalt shingles needed. The metal roof will go over the old shingles. I'll be going with their lightest color, polar white, to reflect heat. The surface is painted with Sherwin Williams WeatherXL, a silicone modified polyester or SMP. The brochure says the colors are available in Solar Reflective (SR) formulations. The brochure is unclear which colors or if all are done this way. I plan on calling.

    I'm no scientist (but my son is) but I used to work as a technician in an outdoor environment. I tried using beach umbrellas to help me shade myself during the hot summers. At first, I used colorful beach umbrellas but soon found out that it really didn't help keep out the sun's rays from heating up the area under the shade. I switched to the darkest single color umbrella I could find and noticed it was much cooler under the darker color. I have since used this theory for black sun block shades in my home. There is a significant difference in the inside temperature due to the darker color.

    What about “solar panel” shingles?

    • @LFTRnow
      @LFTRnow 4 роки тому

      Short answer - not worth it. These have only a minimal cost increase (10%-100%) vs solar generating shingles. Solar generating shingles have much more complex (and costly) installation, and less performance and much higher cost compared to normal solar panels. The main reason for them is if you want solar generation on your roof but don't want or can't have panels on them. Plus, keep in mind solar only generates when the sun is out. This means either expensive battery backup, deals with your power company or both.

We are in texas. Saving $270 per year and 20k more is 6+ year return. 7 years if including opportunity cost of the extra 20k interest rate. Not the worst. I’m curious how much relectivity you’d see just applying a coat of white paint over the first single. You still have more than half the solar radiation being absorbed in their singles, which seems high to me for “high solar reflectivity” singles. Would also appreciate an outdoor demo with temp probes under each shingle to really show the difference.

Adhesion also an issue (dirty/gritty surface vs. smooth and clean). Definitely check with manufacture's rep.

    So this is an obvious scam. Commercial buildings are built differently than houses. Houses normally have unconditioned attics that require the temp in the attic to be close to outside temperatures to prevent ice damming during the winter, which causes roof failures. Yes the attic gets hot in the summer, but if you have a properly insulated attic space then those hot temperatures will never affect your conditioned space.

    How is this worth it? Why not just get solar panel roofs?

    • @nramos33
      @nramos33 4 роки тому +4

      Because they're only 10% more expensive as a one-time installation, but reduce utility prices by 10% monthly. So a $6,000 roof will cost $6,600. But if your utility bill is $100 a month, it'll pay itself in 5 years aka 1/4 of it's anticipated life span and potentially sooner when you factor in utility prices.
      As for solar, you still need a roof to put the panels onto and you will still need shingles or some other material. Solar shingles like those developed by Tesla are cost prohibitive and while they work, they are more of a solution for rich people who can afford the massive premium. While shingles like those made by Tesla do pay for themselves and add value to a property, they are still a new tech and it's way cheaper to get panels.
      So you can go solar panels, but you need shingles. You can get solar panel shingles, but they cost too much and you might as well go solar panel and regular shingles unless you have money to burn.

All the homes in their neighborhood have been built between 1994-2002 and starting in 2016 I noticed many people began getting brand new roofs. More than likely homeowners covered it. Not everybody has $15-$20,000 laying around. Homes in the neighborhood range between $325-$550,000 or so.

    Reflecting heat away from the shingled roof a building or concerns with the high temperatures of the roof surface should be of no concern to a homeowner unless you have a flat roof. A properly engineered sloped roof over a properly insulated and ventilated attic space will not transmit heat to the living areas of the home. The roof surface should provide no heating advantage during winter months and no cooling disadvantage during hot summer months. Fix the roofing system rather than the surface of the deck, otherwise you just putting lipstick on a pig.

      You are actually 100% incorrect. Multiple tests and studies have concluded 100% that the choice of roofing material (shingle, metal, foam, etc) all have a direct impact on the temperature of the outside surface and the inside surface of the roof as well as the temperature of the attic and the temperature of the ceiling of the house. Studies have also proven that an unventilated attic is more energy efficient than a vented attic.

    This snake oil salesman lost me as soon as he mentioned that solar rays are reflected back into the sky - LOL ! Just waiting for someone to now say that this reflected light will harm pilots eyes if they where to be flying overhead. Do we expect these shingles to be twice the price - I mean Jen needs to maintain her beauty therapy.....

      As opposed to reflected into the ground?
      And I'm sure pilots fly over snowy areas all the time which reflectivity reaches upwards of 90% So I doubt some houses are really going to change what pilots feel.

      It's reflecting UV light aka light that's beyond the visual spectrum. They also mention the shingles are 10% more expensive. However, they also reduce utility rates by similar amounts. It's one-time cost vs a reoccurring cost meaning the premium price pays for itself roughly after 5-6 years if you do the math.
      Most of all though, you clearly decided to make this about Jenn who isn't even in the video which speaks volumes about you. Clearly you have some pent up rage about a gardener who you've never met. She's a professional who works hard, has her own business, and tries to help others.
      I don't know what your deal is, but if you are acting like this, clearly you've lost your direction. I hope you find a way towards being a decent human being, because this world has enough toxic idiots who do nothing but tear down people for no reason. Keep down this path and the only friends you'll have are those in your head.

      @@serge.crispino418 1. WTF is a Seppo?
      2. While you're right a lab test is not a sufficient proof of efficacy, of course they have to *start* there -- that's why they kept talking about this as R&D. That's how all R&D for new products has to work. And when Ross mentioned the average savings at the end, that's almost certainly based on experience from real houses.
      3. Your original objection was that he said the solar rays are reflected back into the sky -- well, of course they are -- as other commenters have pointed out -- and you didn't reply to that point in your second comment at all, you just said a lot of buzz phrases.
      4. You also didn't respond to Nate's comment about your obsession with Jen, who isn't in this video.
