I understand living off grid this is something you absolutely need. The question is, these are all very expensive pieces so by the time you need to replace the parts would it actually pay for itself versus the option of hooking onto the grid? I see a few people in my area doing this but with the convenience and reliability also playing into it, the savings would need to be substantial to even consider it. My electric bill averages around 75 a month and would take a very long time to pay for 20k worth of solar.

We do it because we want to. It is not about the money. We like independence.

@@MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving i think you misunderstood my question. I totally understand why you do it and applaud you for doing so. I was asking for myself. I could install solar but have dependable and fairly reasonable priced electricity where I live. I was wondering if you could actually pay for the system versus what it would cost say paying 100$ a month within the life of the equipment?

For anyone wondering. I've calculated around $15k for this setup.
    Batteries-$800 per x 8= 6400
    Solar panels -$400 per 10=4000
    Chargers/controllers= around $1500
    Wiring/etc- around 700.
Very rough numbers other than batteries and panels. But close to or over $13k-17k

Battleborn stuff is among the most expensive out there. Not everyone is sponsored, so do your homework before rushing into a system install. I recommend San Tan Solar for panels; best prices around, but just a small portion of the cost of a system.

@@rixtrix11 I was just adding the price of the total setup for anyone wondering. It's a pet peeve of mine when I watch videos talking about products and there is no price breakdown. Especially for something that is so expensive. I'm not commenting on the products themselves or choosing a system.

Didn't mean this to be directed to you personally[Althouse now I see it could be taken that way. Sorry]. I was only wanting to recommend to anyone considering a system to take time to do a LOT of research into their needs and costs. Thank for listing the pricing! Really surprised when Marty upgraded to this as he was always so frugal in the past.
Check out Red and Robin Off Grid for their $6400, 6000w split phase (120/240V) system. A little more work involved, but much less out of pocket expense. Just another angle to solar power...

At $800 per battery and $15,000 for the whole package, no wonder he's over the top with enthusiasm for this company if they gave it to him for a stellar review. They weren't selling many at this price and were desperate to try to get traction on their overpriced products so we not.

I don't know a whole lot about electricity so when you say split phase, what does that mean? Thanks for great video. Love the life style. If I weren't in my 70's I would do this. So due to medical issues and age, I can't do this. I live in NW FL but have nearly 50 acres of woods in NW TN. Would be great for this. I am tempted to move. The land in TN has no house but has a pond and spring.

So I'm going to do my best to describe it to you. On alternating current there are wavelengths. It is constantly switching from positive to negative and when it switches it's voltage is going up to 120 and then back down to zero and then to -120 back up to zero creating a sine wave. When you look at industrial and commercial applications three phase is most commonly used which means you have three phases (power sources) all on a different wavelength. That is why three-phase motors are very efficient and powerful because instead of a single choppy sine wave the three waves which almost create a straight line. With all that in mind if you look at your panel in your house you have two separate phases (powers sources) When power sources are wired in series (like he did with the batteries in the middle) it combines the voltage, When wired in parallel (like he did on the sides) the max amperage combines. It's the same way in your house you have two phases available aka two separate power sources on different wavelengths (which is very important) that can combine. That's why your dryer can be 240 and your receptacles be 120. That's why your dryer plug has two hots because the two separate phases that are on different wavelengths are combined to create your 240. So basically this system would give you the ability to run 240 if needed. I hope that helps anyone who sees it.

Split phase is from a transformer coil tapped in three places. One at each end and one in the middle. In the UK one end would be .+240 volts and the other -240 volts when compared to the middle connection. This way you could connect specially wound equipment across the ends of the transformer and get 480 volts to drive compressors and welders etc. Used on farms and rural business where 3 phase is not available on the network.

I highly recommend upgrading to an all in one unit like a growatt. ~$900 for a 3kw mppt charge controller, 3kw inverter, and a 1.5kw 120v AC battery charger in one unit. For something that big their 48v unit is probably better, 240v and you can split the phase to 120v with an autotransformer. Also run up to I think 6 in parallel. They make bigger units too

      @jncg2311 2 роки тому

Victron do similar all in one kit but there isn't a massive advantage unless you are starting from scratch. The downside is that you spec the unit to one scenario, then if you change one aspect like an array size, or your load requirements, you are potentially replacing a much more expensive component rather than one or two smaller ones.
Same goes for a failure/ redundancy. One inverter or charge controller is cheaper to replace than a whole all-in-one unit.
I do agree if you need a simple solution for an installation in tight space or know you won't change the specifications significantly over its life.

Not sure about the Bluetooth thing, but I suppose if there was an EMP problem it's taking everything out. I do like your set up though. Yes at outlay it's costly but off grid is sorted there, a lot of folk are going to have issues with power outages as time goes on - they're here now in many states I hear. Rolling blackouts have now got everyone looking at power options. I too have been building a back up system.
Although I live in an apartment I can scale it down, but have enough to run fridge and freezer and laptop for work. My windows are in a good position for all-day light. I am hoping to get a large van, small bus and then everything will be off grid completely. Good luck to you and your family sir, I hope everything goes smoothly with the build and you're enjoying life.

I love "Big Blue" Victron components. Just a note, you can't configure your inverters from your phone app. You must have the MK3-USB device. I installed my system thinking I could configure my MultiPlus 3000va inverter charger through the dongle and/or phone app and I couldn't do it. I had to buy the MK3-USB device to hook the inverter to my laptop. I really like how you have your solar shed set up and how you have your house temporarily hooked up. If/when you decide to upgrade your system, you may want to go with the new MultiPlus II inverters.

I have really enjoyed listening/watching you set up your Solo pawer system, here in the UK they don't make it easy to DIY Solo power systems. They prefer you go through companies.

In most of the states require companies and even mandate grid connection, so your usual not off grid.

Again, I was warned when I created my system that it was important to include a way to disconnect the Solar Panels BEFORE reaching the Solar Controllers to prevent voltage spikes to sensitive equipment when you use the Battery Disconnect. In other words, do not interrupt the Controller Power to the Batteries as long as the Solar Panels are supplying power to the Controllers. Otherwise, great videos that are easy to follow.

Amazing video man, very inspiring! As far as I understand it's still impossible to go 100 % green in winter because of heating water and the house. Hope wind and solar will get more efficient soon and most of the people will live this way

Do you have a checklist of all components and how much the entire system cost you?
Is there a reason your system is built in a storage shed? Why not have it set up in the crawl space?
I've been watching your videos. Thank you for so much information.

I'm learning a lot from you. so i have to ask question from time to time. my question is.... why did you opted for 12V to get 24V, and why you did not prefer to get thier 24V type. My second question is... is your battery storage enough to run 24/7 the entire house? i know you live in snowy area and use heater, fot water, airconditioning, washer and dryer. or you still tap to the grid to supplement other power need. thanks

      Battleborn systems manual says:
      High temperature: > 135F
The BMS will not allow a charging or discharging current.
      Low temperature: < 25F
The BMS will not allow a charging current.
We have had several years of unusually weak winters during the drought here in the Selle Valley. I think insulation in the battery room might be a prudent idea.

It is really not a big deal, because all he has to do is start the generator. The batteries will not ever get damaged because they have a smart BMS inside.

I have an ignorant question as I'm just learning about this subject.....Given what is happening in California with the power grid, should everyone in the state who has solar panels consider doing this? BTW..this is an awesome video. Thank you for sharing.

Very cool I could see a couple of things I would do differently. I would buy a large enough charge controller to handle the entire system. I have Cirrus truck camper and installed one solar panel and could add two more but for my needs one has worked just fine. I have the Victron 100/30 charge controller. I just got back from a 7400 mile trip and only used the generator twice because of the extreme heat. I did drive through Idaho by the way and when I got to Boise it was over 100+ and I had to run generator while I was waiting on oil change at the Ford dealership. We live in Florida and our house was built in 1999 so when I have a new roof installed I'm going solar. Down here we will be able to be 100% off grid and sell power back to FPL.

We finally you explained that like a normal person. back in 2009, I tried solar it fails because of me. cost me a lot of money. I think in few more years everyone will have to make their own power but it will be plug play systems just waiting

It looks like a really good System with possibly a lifetime Use , even with a 10 year warranty . I Personally Do Not care for The Blue-Tooth Monitoring only ! ! Would defiantly Have The Digital Monitoring on the Equipment as well .. Also The Solar Panels were bought separate I'm assuming ? What was The Over All Cost if one were to copy this complete System ?? Thanks ..

Wow Martin this is alot of good info you are giving. Can you give me any ideas on the cost of the system.?

  • @markfowler6200
    @markfowler6200 2 роки тому

I just watched this for about the third time; Martin you should consider getting a Generac (or similar) whole-house generator. You can run it on propane, and stop using your portable generator. Yes, it might cost $4,000 and up, but it can be set to automatically start when your battery monitor sees that the batteries are low, your whole-house generator kicks in automatically. It can hook to your mass supply propane tank. When you're traveling and there's little sun, you're going to lose your batteries, the way you have it now. Frozen pipes, anyone? Also if you need to service the batteries, just let the generator run the loads.
