- Christopher Nolan is one of the best directors of his generation. Explore what he does in his films that sets them apart from anything else you see in film today. I outlined the 3 main components of his films that make them distinctly Nolan. There is still so much to cover in his films but this is a overarching review of how his films fit together. More to come!
I can not wait to see Oppenheimer when it comes to Movie Theaters next year. This overview of Nolan's work should help tide us over until then.

I love tenet. It's sad it was not well received, and some people even call it pretentious. The movie's concept makes it inherently complex, and some people might not like that, but when you get it and experience it in a real imax theater, the experience is unmatched.
Completely agree. There are some flaws in the character development and dialogue but nothing is perfect
It was like the 1st movie released during the major worldwide pandemic lockdown especially if I'm not wrong, so it might have affected the box-office in certain ways, but brave move to do that or a lot of people who still want to appreciate real entertainment will still be always living in constant withdrawal/fear. And also this movie might not be that appreciated by certain western media (especially overcritical/prejudiced american critics, no offense, just my opinion), but it was better received by other countries like I remembered reading certain korean/canadian critics liking this.
Yes. In India, it was released in December 2020, there were very few showtimes. And when I went to theatre to watch it, there was only one person besides me. And experience was amazing specially aeroplane crash and building destroying during final war just mind-blowing. I wanted my friends to watch it in theatre, but theatre got closed in my city again. I read in an article that Tenet did good performance better than expected in India.
Just because something is complex doesn't make it a good movie. The action scenes were underwhelming. The acting was flat in others. I love Christopher Nolan but Tenet seems to be an experiment that on paper seemed like a good film, but when executed is a boring and bloated experience.
That's how I feel about inception. It's hard to understand everything happening
I love Nolan's films. He pushes the film limits and the mind's limits I think. After Oppenheimer I could not stop thinking about the film and I search and read and find out more about the topic or film. I love that feeling.

He LIES and then repeats the OBVIOUS LIE that even NOLAN himself REFUTED. Tarantino's films feel different in their own way too. True artists. Most Hollowood producers and directors are just trying to create a product for consumption. They may have been artists at one time, but the line between art and business was blurred. They follow a formula that results in a very plastic feel, rather than their artistic intuition and their own creative expression. Nolan and Tarantino, and a handful of others are in the pursuit of filmmaking as an artistic form of creative expression, telling stories that transport you, and take you to a different time and place. These films leave you feeling moved, like the world is somehow different. The commerce driven filmmakers don't make films that leave you feeling like the world is different - you forget their movies almost by the time you leave the theater.
You forgot directors like Denis Villenueve etc.

my most favorite aspect about Tarantino's movies are his scripts. That's why i love Hateful 8 more than Django (unpopular opinion i know)
I’m a movie guy that never liked Tatantino’s style. I think the best ever (my opinion, no such thing as objective) is Paul Thomas Anderson. Watched There Will Be Blood in the theater and left feeling confused and weird. 2-3 days later I needed to watch it again, to this day probably my favorite film. (Helped a lot that DDL my top favorite actor was the lead)
Both Nolan and Tarantino are my favorite because I grew up off their movies and loved them before I even knew what the purpose of a director was.
Tenet has to be the most ambitious project of recent times. It is undoubtedly a modern masterpiece and a major cinematic achievement, like Dune. As Villeneuve has said about Tenet, Nolan's mastery is unmatched.
Hugely ambitious with a lot of baggage surrounded by COVID and everything else. Bad timing on the release of the movie
@@BlindTakes Nolan had no other choice. Either he'd push for the theatrical release during COVID (a controversial decision) or let it be released on OTT which would've been a great disservice to cinema and audience. I'm glad he walked away from WB, Universal is a solid pick for him at the moment. Let's see if they let him nuke a nuclear haha

Easily my favorite director, responsible for some of the most mind-blowing movies I've ever seen. This video was really good.
Among many masterpieces of his, Tenet is also my favorite. The movie far outdoes the book imo. I'm glad that he scratched the green turnstile option where time goes sideways, and the prolonged attention to the intricacies of pooping and bike riding.
Tenet is unfairly maligned and people need to give it another chance

Interstellar my favorite, the music, the plot, the absolutely incredible special effects. Just incredible.
I suppose I was about 12 when I saw Inception, 13 for interstellar and 14 for Tenet. First two came with a family movie night, Tenet was watched in a cinema with a friend. I have to be honest, no other movie has tingled my brain the way these films did (except for 1917, which has some of the best cinematography of this time)

I hope he doesn’t release it on dvd and I doubt he will, that’s not the way it was meant to be seen, maybe he’ll periodically rerelease it in imax theaters but I don’t see it going to dvd
Watching this post Oppenheimer and in my opinion it is the best Nolan movie so far.
The score, The non-linear timeline, The black and white scenes It's like all the strengths of Nolan as a filmmaker combined in a single movie.
Oppenheimer was absolutely incredible
Tenet being released when it hit theaters was too early for audiences to come back, with a limited audience, few understood how awesome it actually was, and it got dismissed while most of us avoided theaters for those years. This is why Nolan parted way with Warner Brothers, who are notoriously bad with working with directors, (Richard Donner and the Super-Man film, for example), but Tenet is his best film to date. And 'Oppenheimer' might top that.
I think Tenet could (and should) get a theatrical rerelease now. I think it would actually turn a profit. Especially after riding in on Oppenheimer's success.

Tenet got mixed reviews because it takes a couple watches to click in--it's a bit confusing the first time you watch it, and most reviews are written after the first viewing. Tenet is fantastic--I hope it gets a theatrical rerelease at some point in the next couple years so I can see it on a giant screen.

What a great time to be into movies, Nolan is not perfect - who is that? - but he does something incredibly right. Tenet was to early, I hope it gets its excitement in 10 years
I didn't watch Tenet due to the critics comments, but I always felt the need to watch it. I wish to go back in time where I did not yet watch so I can enjoy it for the first time again

I don't mind that Tenet was not well received. To me that's a byproduct of what makes it so special - it is not a standard viewing experience. It demands a lot from the viewer, and every time you think you have it figured out, there will be some other detail that spins your thoughts 180 degrees. The movie lacks a lot of the main staple aspects of a good movie, such as memorable characters, motivations, and the typical hero journey that you'd normally associate with this kind of story. But since the entire story is actually told in reverse, we also get the reverse of these elements. The protagonist only learns more about how much he doesn't know, it's inconclusive by nature. You'd expect their path to be linear, to graduate, to achieve some key takeaway and learning at the end - but in reality all that he figures out is that for each step he takes, knowledge will demand he takes 2 steps instead. It's a constant game of the past trying to catch up with the future, it has no beginning nor end. It's a loop.
For every aspect of criticism the movie has garnered, those are exactly the reasons why I love it. It's a truly novel story and concept, with actors who fill roles that serve the plot, rather than the other way around. It rewards you for thinking and being invested in the underlying concepts, rather than focusing on just the specific story that is told. The story in of itself is inconsequential overall, or rather, it's simply not the focus point of what's being told. What actually is being told, is a proposal for a hypothesis of how the world may work when viewed through the lens of an alternate reality.
It's why I love that the main character is given the least importance in terms of who he is or what he wants. He is nobody, and everybody. He represents us, the viewers. He is our ticket into this alternate reality prospect, and does his job for us efficiently, without assuming we know things we shouldn't know, and without holding our hands.
It is not perfect, but I don't think Nolan ever strives for perfection, because that is such a subjective bias to hold in the first place. Instead, he simply pushes for originality and passion driven works - which I could probably count on one hand the amount of people in Hollywood who do this, and have the means and willpower to take such risks without looking back or doubting their own purpose.
Now that I have watched this video, I can say that your channel and this content is underrated.

In the context of something like Primer, Tenet just feels like it's just kind of covering the basics of the time travel genre, not reinventing the wheel or trying to ask quirky or as interesting of questions.

To me, the scene regarding Harvey not recognising the Joker before taking his mask off, I just put that down to Harvey's brain being completely disconnected and traumatized from his horrible experience losing Rachel and being disfigured. Not recognising the Joker behind a surgical mask seems illogical I know. But he's a man not seeing anything (or anyone) clearly until the Joker gives him a clear, new purpose.
I absolutely love how his movies always twist your kind in one way or another. However my favorite movie is Interstellar. (Absolutely love the video btw. Great content) :))

All of Nolan films have a comforting sense of cold melancholy to them, in both the visuals and the tone of the film. And honest sincerity, which in modern blockbustker moviemaking is severely missing. That's why I gravitate towards his films. Chris Nolan is for films fans what Opeth is for metal fans.
I absolutely loved tenet. Still do. People really didn't expect something like this coming out. Especially in the pandemic. I think people are too conservative when it comes to movies. I bet in ten yrs this film will be praised as one of the best from Nolan (the same thing happened to inception.
For me tho, this was the movie that had the most impact on me in my life. Kind of how Nolan feels about 2001 or Star Wars IV. Since this movie came out, i became a hobbyist filmmaker, and a photographer.

Also i would say nolan weakness is when he shoot a fight scene with multiple peope its just look clumsy and shaky only 1v1 fight looks good like Batman vs Bane and Tenet when the protagonist fight himself he can learn from other directors like Chad Stahelski

Glad you brought up how in Inception Matthew's character forgot all about his son. His son was the one who was actually loyal to his dad and believed in him, meanwhile the daughter gets all the credit. That ending made me so mad

even tho tenet was one of the movies that was perceived the weakest nolan film by many i still think that the scene where robert pattinsons character checks out the vault before the heist shows exactly why nolan is so great. the music is intense and the dialogue gets overshadowed by it wich makes us focus on what we see rather than what we hear and then we clearly get shown all the important parts of the security measures in the vault. a lot of people hate that nolan uses dialogue as sound fx but i think its genius. he uses all tools at his disposal. the dialogue is not important in that scene so thats why it doesnt matter. we are transported into the brain of robert pattinsons character and hes looking for these security measures wich means he doesnt actively listen to what the guy is saying either. its so well executed. look it up, its incredible.

To me they dont seem different... They all seem thesame, i love his cinematography, and his rules for filming and overall his films but a lot of the purly original movies seem to play a very simular theme
