I was curious to hear your take. I saw it a few weeks ago. The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite stories, so I was intrigued by a musical version. Personally, I felt like the musical had little to do with Fitzgerald's actual story. It seemed they tried to turn the Great Gatsby into a tragic love story, which its not. As you noted, maybe this is because they essentially sideline Nick's character. But by broadening the perspective, they mess the story up. When it came to the music itself, I didn't really think any song was really memorable. That said, I did like the cast. But I think the material was disappointing.

As a follower (subscriber) of your reviews, I was eager to hear your take after the "rather mixed" reviews the show received following its opening. I saw the first incarnation of this piece at the Paper Mill Playhouse back in the fall of '23 and was blown away by it! It was an amazing production, and so I wasn't at all surprised when it was announced that it was moving to Broadway. I don't know where the disconnect lies between what I experienced and what all the NY critics saw. Bigger disappointment came with yesterday's TONY AWARD nominations . . . it only received one nod . . . for costumes!?!?!?

Though my review is admittedly mixed as well, this certainly deserved more recognition than it got, certainly more than Water for Elephants or Hell’s Kitchen, both shows I scratch my head at on how many noms they got.

I will say I saw this at Papermill and was blown away. Went to see it on Broadway and was disappointed. They changed a couple of songs and kept interrupting the intro song, which was so annoying. For some reason it seemed rushed. Daisy's costumes looked cheap, which is funny that the one Tony nomination they got was for costumes design. I still felt it deserved more credit than some of the other nominations did.

I saw it in late previews. I thought the cast was excellent, the choreography was traditional, and the sets were impressive even though some of the projections were malfunctioning when I saw it. The music didn’t give me a jazz age vibe. No really memorable songs.
Was very surprised by the Gatsby miss for scenic design in the Tony nominations. Was somewhat surprised by the miss for choreography, but no issue with the ones that were nominated.

First and foremost, a huge nod to multi-racial casting, bravo!! So, the lead Actress who played, Daisy, wasn’t believable at all, or just totally miscast. It takes a a whole lot of observing, studying, and even the slightest movements, and speech to act like “old money.” My husband who will rarely said that, Daisy,(Eva) looked too awkward as a leading lady to Gatsby.

guess it was meant to be a good summer show for families from the mid-west......
it really did not bring the main characters into focus.....and no real chemistry between the 2 main characters/actors...
    liked the costumes....dances were O.K......

Thank you for a favorable review. The not-ready-with-set previews of the show were disturbing. Sorry, fellow, pop-Broadway is almost a requirement today.
