This is a nightmare for even a bad guy like Frieza. You were supposed to be confused, afraid and shocked seeing the silly boy we all knew turn into an unstoppable killing machine. This song captured that perfectly.
Theonlydezman Sayains truly were supposed to be the opposite of what superman (who Toriyama took a lot of influence from) was. Whereas superman fought for truth justice and the American way, sayains fight for pride, anger, and selfishness. They’re violent and brutal, and that’s kind of awesome.
What terrified me as a little kid in 2012 was the realization that, goku, our sweet happy-go-lucky boy, was no longer that, he had become, instead, a blood-thirsty monster hellbent on vengeance, abandoning all rationality. That stuff can be nightmare fuel. especially while putting two-and-two together while this song is playing.

This good hearted hero becoming a powerful mad lad of legend, whereas true faulconer score treats it as a moment where the legend has been realized and the hour of defeat for Frieza is at hand by or warrior, Son Goku. Either way, it’s interesting how both songs alter the feel of the situation.

I'm unsettled by this score. It draws my mind to the old samurai silent films of Japanese cinema, where nothing is set in stone and every character is expendable. My brother and I have watched this scene multiple times. This was a stepping stone for Dragon Ball Z; we had no idea who was going to come out on top, which characters would survive, or where the series was going.
The Faulconer soundtrack is great but this version sounds so villainous, especially when paired with Goku's transforming scene and the words he spoke during the angriest moment of his life, he had nothing but anger and hatred, I love that moment.
At the Time the Lore of the Saiyan was in a compact sense, Space Vikings//Pirates able to transform into a Kaiju size Monkeys at full moons, Goku was nothing of the sort how his good heart was transformed by the rage, the sorrow, desperation, fear and all that was what trigger the Super Saiyan transformation.
This really is the greatest theme/ost in animation 's whole history, not only anime. There 's nothing that barely comes close to it. The tension and the epicness that is created in the scene by this is bloody otherwordly and legendary.

When I saw his transformation for the first time and heard that roar, I thought it was his awoken alter-ego who isn't good hearted. I remember the chills I got. Magnificent. After this, the super saiyan was just a bargain like Vegeta said to Trunks.

I saw the original Saban dub of the first bit of Dragon Ball first, so seeing Z was like coming back to a familiar character and following him through ever-raising stakes - but even then, the Internet existed and you could just go online and read about Super Saiyans on a bunch of crappy Angelfire pages or whatever. For a lot of audiences, we knew Super Saiyan was coming, we knew it was going to be everywhere and we knew it would ultimately be cheapened by everyone getting to do it and then some - and on top of that, a lot of us only met Goku more than a hundred chapters of story into his life, when Raditz showed up. In that context, this is just Goku getting the big power-up. It was different in the original Japanese airing. Goku has always been characterized as innocent, naive, goofy, and someone who loves to fight, hates to kill and prefers to show mercy. Even when he's fighting hard, we can hear how he thinks and see that he's basically compassionate and kind. What the Super Saiyan moment gave Japanese audiences was turning Goku into someone utterly unrecognizable. Our sweet, kind, gentle galoot had just turned into a stoic, scowling, violent wrecking ball with every intention of making Freeza suffer, and all of a sudden we couldn't hear his inner monologue anymore. Not only that, the only explanations of what a Super Saiyan *was* before this came from Vegeta, who's not only an unreliable narrator, but looking at the Super Saiyan legend through a lens of cruelty and violence. The Japanese score was never intended to pitch this as a hero moment. This was showing the audience that our hero had become something monstrous. We *do not know* at this moment if what happened is good. Between the score and Goku snapping on his own son, it looks for all the world like our hero has just awoken not just some inhuman power, but possibly something horrifyingly violent and even evil.

This theme would fit in with Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno's Hulk.
I like the sound of this theme more than faulconers, but it kinda irritated me that they used this theme over and over and over before the actual super Saiyan transformation. During the vegeta and namek saga. At least the Faulconer score used an original score, even if it was underwhelming.
Underwhelming would be the last thing I'd call the SSJ theme

Nah, the Faulconer score for this is... fine, as a piece of music. It just undercuts the character beats. it turns the moment from "Our hero becomes something monstrous and unrecognizable, borne of of utter frustration and anguish" into "oh cool Goku got the cool power-up."

I remember this being a very prominent song in the old series so I think it doesn't really have much of an impact if it's just the theme usually used at the beginning of the episodes of the series where Goku IS a little boy.
