Same. Most of the reason why I don't listen to Western music anymore (hardly) is because the repetition and 'dumbing down' of the lyrics is so aggravating... and boring. I can enjoy a song with a repetitive chorus if it has good lyrics in the verses, but if not, not. And I prefer music that makes me think and interpret, not music that makes me go, '...you said that fifteen times already. Hush up!' (LOL, I recall arguing with a song once that had 'I'm speechless' as part of the chorus: 'If you were really speechless, you dolt, you'd have shut up two choruses and a hook ago.')

@@ystrwmaybe you are listening wrong westwrn artists. Don't look just at Billboard and other charts. There is a plenty of really quality music on the West as well, but maybe not exactly in pop genre where most of people would look for. Look around, opwn tour eyes, and open your heart.

Melody is what attracts me first to a song but understanding the lyrics and the message it conveys is what makes me love it. Sometimes it's difficult to describe how I feel about their music, but listening to BTS songs affects me deeply. When I'm tired and stressed out, it soothes me. When I'm sad, it gives me happiness. When I'm in a good mood, it hypes me even more. In summary, listening to their music whether slow or upbeat evokes a positive vibe in me.

Depends on my mood, really. That said, I do appreciate a song more if more thought is put into it- both the music and lyrics.

Lyrics rarely mattered very much to me until BTS. Outside of being good or meaningful, they make them relatable too. Then on top of it all, BTS are the ones that made me also trust that they mean what they sing and that the words are meant for ME. It's a special combination of all those things that make me pay extra attention to their lyrics. Sad thing is the fandoms of everyone else just takes that as an insult, despite saying I like other artists music plenty, they take it quite personally that I only praise BTS lyrics lol.

Thank you so much for doing the translating project. I have always had this feeling, that there is more meaning in a lot of BTS's Korean lyrics, than the translations show. They are somehow able to communicate a feeling of that deeper meaning through the music, the videos and the way they are singing the lyrics. You just feel that it matters to them. I think this is what makes an artist great. That they can transcend language, and eventhough you don't get all the nuances and cultural references, you still get the feeling, the essence of it. But I am also one of those people, that love to know more about the art pieces I love, so I am looking forward to the translations and better understanding of the Korean lyrics.

I fell in love with kpop due to serendipity... wait, not the song! The actual process was serendipitous! Years ago, my sister went to Korea with a group of university masters students who were in a class on social work. I thought, "That's cool," and she had some neat stories from the trip. Fast forward a few years, and I had to be away from home for several months, during which time my husband watched a lot of Netflix. When I came home, he insisted I watch this kdrama he stumbled onto called Signal. That lead to Hyena, Juvenile Justice and many other kdramas, including Man to Man, which still holds a special place in my heart. I only watch shows once but I watched that one twice and would consider watching it again! I absolutely LOVED the music from that show and found the soundtrack on UA-cam music. Then I heard something on NPR about Permission to dance by BTS. I thought I needed to explore this music, and oh my! I have found so much to love!
When my daughter-in-law found out I was a fan of kpop (not just BTS) she said, "don't you find it hard to enjoy the songs when you don't understand the lyrics?" And I was fascinated by the question because, no I didn't find not knowing the words to be a problem. It is the music and feelings it evokes that I truly love. I did begin to look for translations after that and of course ARMY has graciously done so many translations, and it does honestly help make the music even better. But to me, translations are just a starting point. Honestly, even in our native language songs sometimes use language that is open to interpretation, and I have heard more than one songwriter say, "I know what this line means to me, but it may mean something different to you or someone else!" Sometimes a lyric has one simple straightforward meaning, sometimes it is up to the listener to create their own interpretation! That is part of the artistry of music.
Now I'm beginning to learn Korean because I was curious and honestly the FOOD! And it IS interesting how the knowledge of the language can change your perception. Sometimes it's not just what you say, it's how you say it, but other times it's just what you say!
I'll truly look forward to your new exploration of translations and song meanings. I know you'll honor the artists intent, while you delve into all the wonderful possibilities!

I have loved some nonsensical fun songs over the years, but like RM, my first love was poetry.
Your example regarding how to really grasp the lyrics is why I read multiple translations. I started doing this because after Festa ‘ 22 I decided to deep dive into their lyrics and write them in a poetry/lyrics journal. Some I truly struggled with because what was translated had parts that just didn’t make sense. Haegeum and Yun for example as well as many others written by the rap line have many layers to dig into. So many BTS songs require time to digest because they are layered much like a tall wedding cake! (And yes, I was that geek in school who loved annotating literature.)

Thanks, as always, for the video. Music appreciation is complex. Having a basic foundation is helpful. I my opinion, people fall into music. Generally, if your family and friends listen to rock, you will listen to rock and rarely venture out because you are in a music silo. I also don’t think many people really listen to the song’s lyrics. If a word or phrase catches their attention, they will play it over and over. Add the silo and herd mentality and you have songs that are unfortunate getting lots of play. I appreciate all your Music 101 classes. I may not venture into the classics but I appreciate the music I do choose much more. BTS has raised by expectation of music. I still like brainless music but don’t give me silly nonsense lyrics.

I am SO HAPPY and GRATFUL you are doing this series! I knew all along I was missing SO MUCH in all the K-Music I love. I'm like you for the most part. I need the music & lyrics to speak to me. When they do, they reach my soul even when I know the English translation is off. Those melody's will get me first. Then the lyrics.
I do like silly bop tunes from time to time, but I don't care for or pay too much attention to artists that are just on repeat with their lyrics and beats. Or doing trend stuff for money.
My family says you can always tell my mood by what I'm listening to lol I have been listening to Bangtan for the full ride...long time to hang in there when I am not 100% sure of things but I have google and UA-cam and a few friends to help get me on track with the true messages. A main reason WHY I stayed so long because they GROW. Everytime they dance, write, sing, or produce. They have never gotten STUCK. Their concept ideas set such a high level for other artists to follow as far as the story lines they tell. I never know what's coming next but I know my heart will need it. They push what narrative THEY want & what THEY believe in. For me, they are so much more than their musicality & talent. Dark times happen and they were the one thing I could honestly focus on to keep me tethered to my life and work through everything. Get to where I am now. That seems such a trite thing to say, I've seen it typed or said thousands of times, but it's true. I don't know why they mean what they mean to me. I don't care.
Thank you so much for what you do. I'm kind of on my own in my world, as far as my love for Asian culture. Always have been. Your channel really makes me happy.

I love music of all genres, and I like it when artists are creative with lyrics, instruments, and genre. I will enjoy a fun whimsical up beat summer song with silly lyrics. However, I will forget and even not like it in the future if the lyrics are not meaningful. So, bottom line lyrics do matter to me. For instance, I find myself enjoying singing childhood songs to young people who had good lyrics. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Lyrics (the message) are the most important thing followed by the atmosphere of the song... Music, like all other art, is for catharsis. I listen to feel happy, or empowered or to grieve! I think this is why BTS has been able to captivate so many vastly different people. There is a song for every beautiful moment of life!🥹🥰💜
And you have to credit every single member for bringing something pure to the table...RM's lyrics, Jhope's energy, Suga's production, Jimin's heart, Junkgkook's passion, Jin's earnestness and V's charisma...they are the ultimate team!

Music conveys the feelings - some can be hauntingly soulful without lyrics and are beautiful already. But lyrics for me adds depth to a song - or bad lyrics may actually ruin it. That's why SB19's songs gets to me. Both music and lyrics go well together, from their fight songs (Bazinga, Crimsone, Gento), their anthems (Mana, What?), their ballads (MaPa, Nyebe, Ilaw), their thank you songs (SLMT, Freedom), and even their sexy songs. Music and Lyrics matches. And thus message is fully delivered and thus received. ❤ Once again, it's nice to hear your take on things. More power.

Definitely love lyrics and as someone who loves poems, finding the depth of a song i like once i read the lyrics(especially kpop songs since i dont speak korean) is beautiful, it validates the feelings the music gives you. On the other hand sometimes yes it's just about the vibe the song gives you so it's nice to have variety. But truly if an artist only produces subpar music with nonsensical lyrics without switching it up sometimes it gets annoying

Lyrics come first . Music is poetry set to undulating ways of speaking it. The melody comes second. It has to match the words in the lyrics and then as the tunes of music evolve , now we consider the beat. These are the three main guidelines for me in choosing my music. Like a good food recipe, it has to have the correct ingredients (lyrics) , taste ( melody) and measurements ( beat). Without these the music produced is okay to listen but will not stay with you for a long time. You will not want a second serving. With outstanding music, you cam eat it like food over and over and over without getting tired of it. And that is the criteria why some music are really good . There should be a message, a story or a lesson. My views only .

I accidently began watching some Jim Jarmush movies - for the actors to be fair.
In Paterson poetry played a big role.
In fact there is a Japanese poet that when asked to show his poetry said:
"Poetry in translation is like showering with your raincoat on" (or something simlar)
We can never fully grasp the artistry but we can glimses of it.
This is why the translator of something is so important.

    Not K-pop but here's a story:
I live in Los Angeles and there is a famous radio station here, KCRW, that plays amazing music, any and all genres. The djays are very knowledgeable and are stars in the their own right (score movies, hired for parties and special events, etc). One night I was listening and the djay prefaced (or recapped - can't remember) a song saying the lyrics are unintelligible, and what you can make out, make no sense. The song was Walking On a Dream by Empire of the Sun.
He said he liked the song because of the music but said the lyrics are weird as is the band. He said he doesn't understand the band or its image but he likes their two hits (the other is We Are The People, which is also really popular - Pepsi or Apple used in commercials).
I love that he spoke so honestly about why he played the song. He said what I most believe in: the music. I grew up in '60's and 70's and went to clubs in NYC, so disco was huge. If you know disco, the singers were amazing - many gospel greats mixed it up and sang these hits, the music is fun and iconic but the lyrics are silly or even outright stupid (Push, Push in the Bush). Don't care, I still love disco to this day.
Anyway, that is my take on music. It's all about the melody. And yes, nobody asked.
    🙃

For me, the sound catches my attention. Whatever arrangement the music is put into the song, peaks my interest. Of course the vocals should be decent also. Sometimes I just rock to the beat because it puts me in a good mood or makes me energetic. In those moments I do not care what the lyrics state. If it is a more mellow, sad or introspective sound to the beat , then I will be curious what the lyrics state. No matter what song it is, upbeat or mellow, the music sound/flow/beat MUST catch my attention first. If a singer ( whether I like them or not) puts out new music and I do not like the sound/flow , then I am not interested in buying or listening to the song repeatedly.

I am with you on songs that just repeat lines over and over again. If the beat and musicianship is stellar, then okay. But it does seem, well, lazy to me. However excellent beat and musicianship does overcome that in certain cases when it goes with my current mood. I grew up with the Beatles and Beach Boys (my middle school years). The lyrics were just like dressing on top of the fun sounds. (early Beatles). When Beach Boys released Good Vibrations, I fell in love with the musical genius of the song's structure. But then came Simon and Garfunkel with brilliant poetry and I moved on. Discovery of Emerson Lake and Palmer solidified my musical taste. I *needed* to have the genius/unique sounds along with lyrics that required pondering and analysis. In later years, Muse met those needs as well. Lol. These days... Late in life... I go with my mood. Heavy metal and hard rock is my go to. Songs that require analysis are reserved for when I feel more pensive or bored (if that makes sense). Last thought: songs in a different language need to catch me musically (duh). My love for BTS is not as much the music.. more for who they are as persons and the lyrics are great for my analysis moods. Note: AgustD satisfies my craving for the heavier sounds, so there's that. Lol

I don't necessarily need super deep lyrics. I like it the most, when I can relate. And I can relate to sad, serious and happy/hype topics. What I don't like is nonsense lyrics. And I don't even care when one or two lines don't exactly work grammatically. It's when the whole song doesn't make sense, there's no line to follow or anything. Like, even most party songs usually have a build up. Some kpop songs tho...😬
But I also like songs with an interesting beat/rhythm/instruments. I often fall in love with certain sounds and I love looking for such details in a song. When there is nothing going on, I often get bored

Lyrics don’t have to be top tier, but if they are, they truly enhance a song. Here’s my take: if I don’t like the melody or beat, it doesn’t matter how beautiful or amazing the lyrics are, I likely won’t listen to the song again. On the flip side, if a song has a great melody, but the lyrics are so bad that they make me cringe or roll my eyes, I also won’t listen to the song again.

Language conveys much more that a word for word translation can say. Being able to speak several languages, I'm acutely aware how word usage in various languages carry cultural, historical and ethnic meanings that go beyond the linguistics. Even with one language, region affects the meanings. Spanish from Spain is entirely different from Mexican or Colombian Spanish. For this reason, I always try to read at least 3 translations of anything I'm interested in to get a fuller picture of what the text means. I'll never really get the full picture, but I'll get a close approximation, I hope

    IT'S BACK! YAY. AGUSTD! Haha
These translations will be romanized also? So pronunciation and also romanization? That is so hard to find.
(One day I'd love if it if things translated using the same sentence structure. Subject, noun, verb. But that part won't happen lol. Its a weird disconnect for me).
I've been learning Korean for over a year now. All I can tell anyone that wants to learn is there are no direct translations that you would expect. You have know the context first. Especially if you do not want to make offense. All words may have different meanings in context and they may be the same word with various pronunciations and then respect plus age relation. Also if a word ends in a consonant or vowel. Sooo. It's not something you can just open a book on unless you just need enough to communicate. All I know, is that I know nothing.
Our native American languages are going extent for similar reasons. That they require generations to pass it down. You can't just write a book and go "done! Cherokee, now Sioux next"

And so many people are still buying the same type of crap. They're given songs with don't mean anything, with lines that are repeated 5,000x in a song. And they call the person the best musician of all time."
----This is Kpop in a nutshell. There are many people who loves nonsical, shallow, noisy songs that offer nothing but cool dance moves and visuals, giving a superficial facade to kpop idols . This sells out well to the kpop fans. So, in business perspective, why would the label give their groups creative freedom, engage in enhancing sounds, lyrics, research about literature references, all that sh*t when the fans eat anything what's being served to them, even if it's a crap? I'm just thankful that Bighit gave so much creative freedom to BTS. Their ability to change sound and genre, their process in writing the lyrics and composing the melody, their social awareness etc, It's what made them special.

I slightly disagree with you (and Doolset) on the interpretation of Suga’s opening verse in Black Swan. I think he’s indicating that it’s his inner voice, his Shadow, telling him that his heart no longer beats with the music. So it’s an aspect of himself saying it, not a third party. The entire piece is a Jungian Shadow song, a debate with that inner voice, and it makes most sense if decoded in that light.
He sings the key lines in English, “Tryna pull up”, “… my first death”, “I been always afraid of”, so there’s no ambiguity in translation. And he returns to that viewpoint later in the song, in English “I see myself, myself”. It’s not a conversation with anyone except Min Yoongi.

Lyrics matters, our brain listen, our brain register them and our brains take or reject the message. As a western I got so tired of the oversexialized music of the media, of the violent lyrics or the plain brag. Even classic music in the west tells a story, transmit a message trought beats and lyrics.
The 5th pastoral symphony of Bethoven is powerful because its music but the choir must be one of the most translated of the world because its powerful message of fraternity and hope. Wagner and his "Ride of the Valkyries" transport you to the grandiose that is the rise to Valhalla after the battle, the unsettling that must be to be there and listening their battle cry to bring the fallen heroes to them.
And then we have "fun" music like "Carmina Burana" that even if it treats of things like drinking, the spring and other "mundane" themes has ben so masterful writen that still it move us today even if the words scape to our understanding.
Music, art is about messages and even the rythm transmit one so of course lyrics matters. Mozart wrote thousands of pieces, many of them even considered "vulgar" and full of jokes, innuendos or rude messages but we do not have that one in our historical archives but his requiems, symphonies and ensambles are.
Messages matter as much as the skill of the composition.

Omg, searched for a comment like this. When I read the title of this video I instantly thought of my most recent experience with this difference, by listening to Jimins and Lisa's new songs only 1 day apart. I loved Jimins, because it was something I have never seen from him before but still fits him. And when I listened to Lisa's I was in disbelief...I thought now that she is more in charge, she would give us something different, something with substance....but it just sounds like every other blackpink song. It's just so sad/disappointing. I saw some fan's talk about the shallow lyrics, but most are just hyped because the video is so cool and lisa is a badass (like in every other video/song). I don't know....I am not part of the fandom so maybe I just don't get it. But if I wear, I would be so disappointed.

lyrics didn't matter that much to me in the past. What I mean by that is i never took deep dives into the lyrics to see if there's a hidden meaning or what not. But the sound and flow of the lyrics did matter. I didn't like songs that just repeat the same line over and over again or if it's just gibberish. Lines like "all my friends are dead, take me to the edge" repeated 10000000 times is just lazy. or when songs just have a noise to it that they keep repeating....i have a perfect example of this...but to avoid fanwars, i'm going to omit my example. maybe that's why i liked rap, because you can hear the flow and the rhyming of the lyrics, even though i might not know exactly what the artist is trying to say with the lyrics. It wasn't until BTS that i started to actually dive deeper into the meaning behind the lyrics. And honestly....they set a standard for me now. i have even less patience with other songs/artists now when they don't meet that standard.

I get so discouraged with some of the lyrics recently. Just words jumbled, forced together that make no sense. Lyricist is a real skill and talent and not everyone has it. It seems we have lost the beauty of real lyrics to jam words together and proclaim song writing. The fandoms accept and glorify this paltry result as awe inspiring -add in some random notes packed tightly together. Squeeze these 2 together to form a….. masterpiece. The most important thing to proclaim is idol -wrote, produced, composed, sang, danced and looked good doing it all. Fans or even idols themselves screaming they can do all that well… doesn’t make it so.

Agree 100%. Pop songs that are just bubble gum have their place and can be great fun, sometimes I just want to dance at a club to a great tune, but an entire catalogue of bubblegum without any innovation is largely commercially driven rather than editorial and in my opinion has less artistic value. Artists that can do both are more likely to have an enduring legacy. That said I’m a lyrically driven consumer.

I began watching K dramas and listening to K Pop music because of universal themes, such as family, romance, honor etc, and because of the respectful behavior which I perceived to be common in the culture. There was a sense of wholesomeness and very little vulgarity. In fact, vulgarity usually was an indication that a person was a villain. So when my favorite K pop group began using the F word in songs, I was very disappointed, and I play only the non explicit versions of BTS songs. I realize they are grown men, but using vulgar words is not a sign of maturity. It is carelessness that shows a disregard for how wide their audience is.

It shows that they are human and not "Idols".
They are *NOT* your "emotional support K-pop boy".
It's not about cursing or being explicit. It's about being human.
      You don't like the song?
Skip it. You don't have to like it.
But there is a limit to what they have to take.
Namjoon has every right to be angry about how people react to him liking "Bad Religion by Frank Ocean. He has a right to be angry that when he talks to a monk the monk goes to the press and tells all about it.
That JK is treated like a child can get exhausting. There is nothing dirty about sex.
Jimin is cute but that people want to "put him in my pocket" gets old.
There is so much more that gets critizied and missinterpreted - sometimes on purpose.
You not likeing a song is absolutly fine.
But that does not make it bad music.
Now expecting them to make only music with lyrics you approve of sounds a little... colonizier mindset?
I'm not sure about the right word for it but frankly I doubt you are trying to tell US musicians what kind of lyrics they "have to" write - just that you are not listening to them anymore or ever have voluntariely.

BTS always made their actual music and lyrics as an important part of who they were. they are musicians who are always exploring all genres and how to mix them up successfully. while also making sure their songs had substance. even the ones written for them like the english songs still had substance at least most of them. i prefer BTS own music but thats just me. But to say a group is one of the greats but all you get are senseless party songs ehh I wouldnt agree. BTS have always showed us they are true musicians, who write, compose, produce and even play instruments. how many rappers do you know that can play guitar and piano like Suga. so yes substance to me makes a great musician
