  • A special feature! We are at sea on the Fishing Vessel Hardway with Captain Dave "Wimpy" and First Mate Isaac. Who needs a second mate when you have a dream team like this! Lets Go!
    F/V Hardway is owned and operated by Dave "Wimpy" out of Wanchese, NC. Hardway is longlining under an Atlantic Highly Migratory Species Permit which allows him to harvest Tuna and Swordfish. This is a dying trade - there fewer than 100 pelagic longline boats active on the East and Gulf Coasts as restrictions have increased over the years, the bulk of boats left the fishery. Atlantic pelagic longliners are strictly monitored through hundreds of regulations including on-board cameras and Vessel Monitoring System that tracks there location, every hook in the water, and every fish that comes on board.

    Congratulations, that’s a veeeery nice outing !. A manual double pulley will definitely help you bring those heavy babies onboard. Cheers!

      Yup, it would've definitely helped this trip especially being short handed! Hardway's sister vessel has a winch that makes the big fish a breeze to get on board.

    I didn’t think the water off the Outer Banks could get that calm.

    Some mechanical means of hauling aboard the bigger fish, before a back injury, seems like a reasonable investment.
    The sea/weather conditions in the video are ideal. Do you go out when things aren't quite so perfect?

      Yes this was an oddly calm day for the location of fishing, looks like grouper fishing weather! Off Cape Hatteras, the Labrador and Gulf Stream currents collide so they is usually a chop at least. The next trip, was 30-40mph for 6 days!

      F/V Hardway is a top longline boat here on the Outer Banks! We are lucky he has welcomed us on deck, he is a fantastic fisherman. We have an introduction with the Hardway coming soon!

    Epic. Or just another trip

      This was a good trip! Our longline boats target swordfish in the Winter because Bluefin Tunas are migrating off NC and our quota is very limited for those. If we go over our Bluefin limit we have to purchase additional quota from the purse seine category. So it is easier just to avoid the Bluefins altogether and go for Swordfish :)

    What kind of tuna were mixed in?

      Bigeye and/or Yellowfin, I couldn’t see them very well. We also catch bluefin and black fin but not as frequent.

    Can the music. The action is dramatic enough without the cheesy music.

    This is commercial how do you get a job asa commercial fisherman

    • @HarborHouseSeafood
      @HarborHouseSeafood  Рік тому

      You can do it few ways - hit the docks and ask around is the old school way. Now you can join a couple commercial fishing Facebook groups and post seeking a job. The best way is to be recommended to the job through someone else if possible . Good luck!
