One of my favorite games still. Would really like this game come to Kickstarter and be remade implementing some of the things that were unfinished or broken. Expansions were also planned in different time periods also that unfortunately never came to pass.
Unfortunately, it didn't sell well initially thus the expansions were cancelled. Although it has gained loyal following over the years. Too bad it couldn't be a commercial success like Dark Souls.

A flail is a type of impact weapon, but should be more effective. The amount of healing you get is determined by the character in the party with the highest healing skill (I put my priest up to a maximum healing but still only got 2 points of healing per day). you need a high virtue rating or your saints won't allow you to pray to them (though virtue can be acquired through good deeds). I have the original game on 3.5" floppy disk, and love the historical detail, especially all the saints and the way it brings the medieval mindset to life. My game came with a map of medieval Germany, and I have the rule book. Yeah I quickly came to the conclusion that throwing weapons were best since they do the most damage and you only get one shot before hand-to-hand combat anyway. I gave up playing this game all those years ago because it kept crashing and could not cope with the complexity of mines despite my desperate attempts to fiddle with expanded memory. Nice to see it behaves better now. Interesting that you didn't have a priest character. I found it very difficult to get a good alchemist that tries to be another type of character but yes I agree, you can always learn things in the game but not your attributes, push them as high as possible.
My healer has a rating of 30 but when I got a saint to raise it to 80 I got 5 points of strength restored - and while camping, got it done twice before the saint's influence ran out
Well now I'm carrying around over 70 sets of clothing in case somebody asks for them, but so far none have been taken - it says in the FAQ you can give them to pilgrims and refugees but they haven't taken any. I guess it's because clothes have zero monetary value and you given them "XX groschen worth of clothing". What do you think the chances would be for a Kickstarter project "Darklands Remastered"???? By the way I met the very rarely met tournament knight but didn't have a horse at the time, so was unable to proceed. Now I have a horse but all it's done is prevent me from climbing over walls (increases stealth) instead of paying for the city entry fee
Heal is useless unless you get it to 30 or 45. 1-29 is all the same and 30-44 is all the same. So putting points in that except for you main healer is completely pointless.
Minmaxing at the start of the game and using exploits (stripping items and killing off new characters) just proves how unbalanced the underlying game must be. I presume doing a blind playthrough of this game must end up horribly.
I finished the 'main storyline' a long time ago, with handcrafted characters all 30+ years old, without any exploits, killing the dragon and all, and I'm a subpar RPG player. Living in Vienna I visited it often :) And I hate mines!
Not even four minutes into a let's play about a medieval fantasy game and I'm about to hear a German guy go off about how the 1933 Institut für Sexualwissenschaft book burning didn't go far enough, wtf
I did some testing for gaining stealth skill points using 5 guys (+1 Hanse fellow), the one route via going from side street to market and back to side street i observed from June (4th) to June (28th) 1401 (from daylight to daylight), totalling 92 attempts with 46 times getting no increase at all. 25 times i got a "+1", 17 times there was a "+1+1" and just 3 times a "+1+1+1". THEN i tried to do in night from June the 4th to go from side street to marketplace, there sneaking to the offices and through a window back into a side street (94 attempts in total, from daylight of June 4th to the daylight of June 20th): 42 times "0", 31 times "+1", 2 times "+2", 10 times "+1+1", 4 times "+2+1", 1x "+3", 2 times "+3+1" and even 1x "+3+3", so the difference in short: the side-market-side path costs 23 nights (92 attempts) and gives (all points summed up) 62 stealth points. The other path side-market-offices-window-side costs 15 nights (94 attempts) and gives 84 stealth points (both paths with a fifth guy however). Please note that heading for the offices has worse chances to avoid the night guard, so it might be far more expensive.
I'm pretty sure it's not that simple. Like, 6 volumes of the Decline And Fall are probably not enough? So maybe your comment is pretty ignorant as well.

This really needs a remaster. It’s just that good, nothing needs to change except the graphics. And maybe a bit of the interface.

It's amazing that modern games went back to this exact graphic style now. Like 'The Iron Oath' for example, or 'Star Renegades'.
