      Froning knew Fraser was about to take over him. Fraser was a much better and younger athlete at the time. So that's why Froning tried to sabotage the career and the landscape for Fraser. This, in the long scale of time of the game, of the sport, will never be forgotten as the real evil person Froning is. Same way, when he doesn't like the attitude of an athlete, he sabotage the career of that athlete at mayhem. The guy, the group of people at mayhem, they are like toxic.

    It’s about time that Mat is not burdened with being silent about the ridiculous pressures and situations that he’s overcome for the past five years. Even when he’s being honest, he still does it with humility and tact. G.O.A.T

    Let me preface by saying that, in general, I respect Rich and Mat a lot (I am biased in that I like Mat more since he's even more intense, calculating, articulate, and seems like he'd be a lot more fun to be around). They were both role models for me growing up and their drive is world-class. I got involved in Crossfit at around 2010 or so, was extremely into it, and was inspired by both of them. Saw the whole Froning era (actually sent him a congratulatory Facebook message that he responded to after his first win lol) and have been following the Fraser era and they've been awesome to watch. Anyway, no one cares, let's get back to the juicy stuff haha
    A video that always stuck out to me on the dynamic between the two was this: ua-cam.com/video/Uu7ZqjIzfvQ/v-deo.html
    There's a number of awkward interactions and Mat came off as being a bit of an outsider, but it may have also been that the group barely knew him at the time and weren't particularly cordial (right at the beginning). Then watch Froning roll his eyes in frustration (possibly with himself) after Fraser makes a snatch that he couldn't (11:08). The clearest indication of tension is Rich and James Hobart being "jerks" and Mat clearly being uncomfortable with it (16:00 and pay attention to Mat's micro expressions and body language at 16:33 and 16:41). It was like a boiling point had been reached even within the span of that video and Froning became more and more toxic as a result. The way he acted in this video was very uncharacteristic of him at the time, including him swearing which is something that I hadn't heard him do before this video. That being said, maybe it's just normal smack talking for Rich and his inner circle, but it didn't seem like Mat was comfortable with it.
    This could partly explain why Rich's side of the story is what it is - he doesn't think he was treating Mat differently from the rest of his friends. Rich's circle seems more cliquey, dramatic, and whiny (remember when Hilary Froning bitched at Noah Ohlsen on Twitter or how Elly Kabboord just couldn't own up when she failed a drug test?). Mat's circle seems like a warmer bunch in general, so he may just not have gotten along with Froning and friends. Plus, although they have some obvious things in common, I do think their personalities, what drives them, and so on are quite different so I can see how they may have just wound up not being that close as a result.
    Rich also has a longstanding attitude of needing to win and be the best. He has said it himself plenty of times, his mom, his sister, his wife, and so many people around him have said it. Even in his video response he stated that he couldn't be around Mat when he was injured because he didn't like the fact that there were things that he couldn't do that Mat could. Well, the fact of the matter is, even when Rich is perfectly healthy, there's still plenty of things that Mat can do that he can't.
    Rich likes having training partners who are in the upper echelon (Dan Bailey for a long time, Elijah Muhammad, Josh Bridges, Jason Khalipa, Ben Smith, and Matt Chan here and there), but that he's still better than because that's what suits his ego. Mat, on the other hand, builds his confidence from his preparation, a circle of family and friends that love him regardless of his results (not saying Rich doesn't have that), and isn't nearly as outcome-oriented as Rich. In spite of his accomplishments, Rich is still an insecure man who cares too much about what people think of him (even his response was just a poor attempt at damage control for his image but he chose to take an ad hominem route to argumentation and that only made him look worse). Fraser really doesn't seem too care much about what other people think about him and is fully focused on just doing the best he can at whatever he puts his mind to. Mat strikes me as being far more intrinsically motivated than Rich.
    Also remember that before Mat showed up on the scene Rich was virtually untouchable. There was a video called "How Do You Beat Rich Froning?" that came out in 2013 before he won for the third time (ua-cam.com/video/0hZrXjyeJII/v-deo.html) and some of his competitors seem to have accepted that they were playing for second. Chris Spealler even goes as far as saying, "you may not see another Rich Froning for like a hundred years when his time has come and gone." We all know how that prediction turned out. Rich wanted that legacy to live on and he knows that Mat has performed way better than him in a much more competitive era. Instead of the legacy Rich wanted, the question of "Rich vs. Mat" has in many ways overshadowed his actual accomplishments.
    I'm inclined to believe Mat's side of the story, but Rich is only human and I can understand why he may have acted the way he did. Rich could have handled things in a more mature way, but it is what it is.

      Nice breakdown man. I just came across this video and defiantly don't follow as closely as you wrote out a year ago , but I started watching the CF games in Fraser's first year. I remember watching some of there interactions at richs house.
      I wouldn't say I'm a rich guy. He seems like the type of person I personally avoid. Which, that may be more of a me thing.

    I find it really interesting about Rich and Mat. But at the end of the day there’s no rule that Rich has to like Mat. Does it sound a little petty about the training during Covid, sure. But it’s the type of thing you hear about the whole time - if you’re not in someone’s gang etc. A bit nasty for Tia about the Rouge competition. I do know that Mayhem has level 1 training during Online comp for the games. At the end of the day this changes nothing. I’ve had a preference for Mat. And my totally fav is Pat V! And Tia trumps them all!

    I was a Fraser fan, but now I’m all in team Fraser. It’s hard to make judgement without hearing Rich’s side (which we’ll never get) but like you all, I raised a flag or two when tia and mat didn’t do the workouts at mayhem.
    It’s so disappointing and shocking to hear how petty Froning is and how he has treated mat.

    • @megaxe1915

      @@megaxe1915 That's what i thought as it relates to Tia, but unless Mat did something foul to Rich, I'm a bit shocked by the attitude. Mat strikes me as someone to stays close to his circle of family/friends and won't care to bad mouth others. I know there is Rich's version, but something must have happened when they competed at the same time at the games that Rich hasn't let go.

    I was very surprised Tia and Mat didn’t do the online comps at Mayhem. I really was shocked. Definitely have respect that he didn’t try to give opinions and laid out facts. I love his Success is the greatest revenge. I have thoughts as to why Rich could act like that toward Mat (and Tia), but that’s my uneducated opinion. We’ll wait to see if we get Rich’s side. Clearly, it didn’t affect him. I love Mat’s mentality- level-headed, focused, definitely a New England influence. I love the Jordan-LeBron reference. It makes so much sense. And one day, someone could top them both

    • @joecotter5596
      @joecotter5596 3 роки тому +1

      That's because they couldn't. If you go back and look - during both events there was an L1 seminar going on and an L2 seminar for the same weekends. The seminars end up using a LOT of the space in Mayhem and having Mat and Tia there would have been a huge distraction for the seminar attendees and would have been a huge distraction for Mat and Tia.

    This is a true old school competitors relationship. You don't have to be friends. This is a business. Like the old days, you compete and make history that's it. Nowadays everybody's in the elites sports people are friendly. Not the best attitude by Rich of course, but he's old school. Maybe they'll be friends when they retire and will have a podcast and talk about it. After all they are the greatest that ever did it🙌🏾. Go for 8 titles Matt and dominate forever. Rich and Matt are two amazing athletes out if this mortal world. Matt can inspire this new generation with that mindset.

    I wasn't going to comment on this but I feel like there are some things here that need to be cleared up.
    1) Mat and Tia had been regularly training at mayhem during hours the gym was not open to the public. If Rich really had a beef with Mat, he could've easily vetoed that but never did.
    2) I dropped in to CF Mayhem on a day where Mat and Tia were training. And Rich was also in the building with Chyna and Tasia.
    3) When Tia picked up that equipment, that was also around the time Mayhem was live streaming like 2-3 quarantine workouts/day on YT. That could've easily been what was going on there.
    4) Haley Adams also wasn't allowed to do any of her online comps at Mayhem because there were L1s going on the same weekends as both of the online comps.

      So at the end of the day, Rich doesn't have a problem with Mat? If that's the case, why do you think Mat feels as if he's getting the cold shoulder? It's not as if they have to hang out because Mat strikes me as a person with a small circle of people he trains with/hangs out with.

      1) Well they are representing Mayhem in their competitions...that's the least he could do
      2) Still doesn't explain the ghosting and cold shoulder? man up and speak your truth. Where's that Christian hospitality?
      3) The gym was packed with members...so they were live-streaming workouts with all of their members? and why give them the excuse of COVID and being fair to members?
      4) But she was offered the barn...did Rich give them options? especially with such short notice. That was a really shitty thing to do to them.

    I get the different responses to Fraser's comments about Froning, pro and con. Personally, I don't find the presence of distance, tension, lack of a close working relationship between the two perfectly reasonable. I would not have expected anything else--and was puzzled why Fraser would move into Froning's hometown in the first place. Perhaps a kind of naivete. These two dudes are very, very different in how they approach life and Crossfit. Fraser is worldly, profane, irreligious, business-like, not interested in what others think about him. Froning is, well, the opposite. Both value friendships, character, and so on. I think most would agree that both are really good people and that they share all kinds of qualities, similar kinds of legacies. But it strikes me that they are drawn to different kinds of people. Moreover, they think of Crossfit differently. Fraser's retirement from Crossfit (in every aspect) strikes me as the choice of an independent, self-possessed person. His identity is elsewhere. Froning is all-in for Rogue, for the Crossfit-ish world. Anyway, I think this distance between these two very proud alpha males is perfectly reasonable

      Yeah but there doesn’t seem to an issue that Tia moved to Cookeville as well. I am and will always be a huge Froning fan but this was really disappointing to hear. I also cannot imagine that Matt didn’t discuss moving there with Froning first, they even had business plans so it just doesn’t make sense. Froning’s explanation was that he was getting over an injury and that is why he didn’t want to be around Matt, because he couldn’t do the things that Matt could do, I’m sorry but that is stupid. I also agree with you religion seems to be a big part of this but that’s also sad that someone is willing to cut someone off entirely because they feel like they don’t pray enough. I will continue to support Rich, he still motivates me but it’s just sad that he’s like that.

      @@wchandler2010 yup. Disappointing but perfectly understandable. BTW, I think there was communication between the two. Mat has a different understanding of what this is than Rich. Theirs is not a friendship. I take it that Mat wanted that but Rich didn't. I get this. Different requirements.

      @@faithfulskeptic936 I’m not sure if I can say understandable, especially if this is about how someone practices religion I just don’t get it personally. I’ve watched Foning’s response and even he said that there was no discussion and he’s not 100% sure what happened. Again beyond this I still have a very high opinion of him.

    • @faithfulskeptic936
      @faithfulskeptic936 3 роки тому

      @@wchandler2010 Yup, I do as well--for both of them. They seem like good people. I myself am a religious person, and I know from my own experience that we tend to gravitate or feel more comfortable around folks with similar values and beliefs. I'm not an alpha male "white evangelical"--Rich is and I find there is a kind of exclusiveness or aloofness that characterizes that group. Not politically but religiously motivated. Just an observation, confirmed by all kinds of sociological studies. I wish Mat and Rich would be friends. It would be great for them both as well as for the sport. I just don't think they're compatible. IMO, had Mat decided to work out consistently at Mayhem--which was a choice he made and not Rich--I think things would have been different. Perhaps. At least they would better understand one another.
