How to use Expansion Manager

- PLEASE NOTE THE LATEST VERSION IS 2.10, April 2024) - the tutorial is exactly the same, Yamaha have just updated the system. ALSO PLEASE NOTE - in order for V2.10 to work, you MUST have the latest firmware update 2.0 installed in your Genos 1 keyboard or 1.02 for Genos 2- both available via the Yamaha website.
This is a tutorial showing how to use Expansion Manager from start to finish. We start importing instrument ID and end loading a pack into the Yamaha Genos. Ensure you follow every step from start to finish.
Just purchased a Genos 2 and had so many expansion packs included in the package for download from the Yamaha site I had a devil of job until I watched this video.

Fantastic! After struggling and struggling to install my new expansion pack on my new Genos, I came across this video and it gave me all the information I needed. Your step by step explanations and instructions were perfect. I didn’t find anywhere near as much detail in the manuals or on line and the installation just didn’t work before I discovered this video. Thank you so much.

Thank you for making this so clear.. which Yamaha' guide does NOT... It is completely unfathomable, that Genos has a cabled connection to computer (Genos to Device) and they don't use that'. I wasted over an hour trying to get their WIFI connection to work.. But I do LOVE the keyboard, so I have to put up with this stuff..

Dear Leigh - I have a PSR S970 and have had many issues with YEM and USB & Exp Packs. Now having followed the above tutorial I now know what Ive been doing wrong and its now working so just wanted to say a huge 'Thank you' for making your tutorial step by step with excellent explanations which is just what I needed - Pity there aren't more of these quality '970' tutorials (In English) for us beginners !

Well done Leigh. We still have a Tyros5 in our keyboard stash although rarely used. We spend most of our time using VST's from within Logic these days.

Hi Leigh, fantastic tutorial video once again. It may be worth explaining using expansion manager over WI-FI and the pitfalls of not saving it correctly. Yes, it happened to me 🤦♂️Took me half a day to correct my mistake.
It doesn’t work - never has from day one. The other error many make is using quick pack installation - that doesn’t work either. Full installation from USB is the most reliable.
One of the best tutorials I have even seen. Well done ..

Thanks - your tutorial is very clear and I have finally been able to load the Genos Superior Pack and actually play the new styles! I'm just appalled at the Expansion Manager. It could easily be improved to guide the user through the process. It feels like a piece of test software. I first tried to create an installation file on my USB stick using the quick install format. For some reason, my Genos (firmware 2.0) gave an error message that indicated that it needed the installation to be in the normal format. After re-creating the new slower installation file, the pack loaded from the USB stick without a problem. It did take several seconds to load. The whole process has taken about 3 hours and a lot of walking up/down stairs between the instrument and my PC.

Hey Leigh. Just wondering if you have heard anything about the status of converting cpf files into the YEM 2.10 for Genos2. So far, I have plenty of voices that I'd like to be able to use in Genos2 like the SA2 Pan Flute, etc with no results whatsoever. Waiting on Yamaha's conversion or any other solution you may know around?? Great content in your channel by the way. Congrats on your 10K+ subscribers!!!

Excellent tutorial sir. I recently purchased from the Yamaha Software company the Salsa Voice Expansion style Software. I'm still waiting for it in the mail. Do I do the instructions as in your tutorial when I install it? Would have to use a blank USB , to my computer to install it?
The latest expansion manager is 2.90 and keyboard firmware 2.13

Hello Leigh. Thanks for this video. I had a PSR S970 and had problems with the YEM , which I think was the cause of multiple crashes on the machine . If I have a pack installed and everything is OK ,and I decide to buy say, two more packs at a later stage do I have to delete the first pack and make a new 'three in one ' install file ? I also wonder how can you audition a style/voice when you're making up a new pack . Sorry to ask you all this but at the time I tried in vain to get help and I ended up ditching the keyboard. Now I'm tempted to get the new PSR SX900 so any help would be appreciated .

Yes, Yamaha have covered some, but not all so far. All third party packs load ok.

Just one thing I would like to know. I have downloaded some packs for the Genos from the Yamaha MusicSoft site. They have downloaded as ZIp files. I assume I have to unzip them first, which is not a problem, but I notice that there are multiple files inside (not just one item as shows in your video) How do I install these please............I am assuming I just highlight them all?
Same problem with mine, how do I make them from Zip files to .ppf?
Great video! Can you tell me please if you have to create a new PackInstaller for each pack you have, or do you only have to do this once? I'm assuming once PackInstaller is created, any further packs you put into the Manger can be found under the originally created Installer but I could be wrong. Thanks

Forgot one thing Leigh. When I try to import a pack from Yamaha, I unzip the pack to see the file with the .cpf extension. When I click Import Pack, it doesn't recognize the the extension. So, I can't import the into the Expansion Mgr. I tried to Install the Installation Pack from the Genos1 and that didn't work, even with the Genos 2 information.n27 file.

When I use 1 sample to create an instrument, after more than 1 or 2 octaves, the sample speed will become very fast, how to make this sample increase the octave, the sample speed will not change?

Hello I was wondering if youv could help. I have a Yamaha Genos. I was able to add 2 expansion packs to the keyboard by following this very helpful video. After that I have tried adding more packs and I can't get YEM to create a pack, it starts but then it just stops like 5 seconds after it starts no matter which packs I try. It's really puzzling and I was wondering if you could give me any advice please. Thank you very much. From Canada.

Hello, I was wondering how I can load my pack that is a .ppi file on to my Yamaha expansion manager?
I've tried several times to install Entertainment 2016 Tyros/Genos without success. When I click on the PACK data file after touching EXPANSION in the Menu window, a message comes saying, "Cannot execute quick installation. Install with a full installer (.ppi/.cpi). What can you tell me to do?
yes don’t save the file as a quick install file - choose full pack when saving the file in expansion manager. problem solved.
Hi Leigh, like everyone else that have watched this video, crystal clear. Thanks very much, although, having loaded and inserted the usb into Genos containing expansion pack, I've got the message, 'can't execute quick installation, install with a full installer (.ppi/.cpi). Does this mean turn off, and turn on again holding down the start/stop button? would appreciate your help.
mike burrell you must use full installer NOT quick.
Hi Mike, if you haven't found the full installer option yet for your new Pack, you can find it when you click on the the "Save as Pack Install File" button in the Yamaha Expansion Manager. When the File Save Selection box is presented, just use the the drop down list and change your .cqi file to the .cpi option. This .cpi option is the full installer you need to use if your Genos won't accept a quick installation. I hope this will help you get your pack installed. Best wishes. Chris Teske

When installing an expansion pack what happens to the existing expansion packs already installed. Can I load the new pack onto the USB under the Genos.
No. Packs must be leaded using expansion manager and every time you add a new pack your Genos wipes the memory and reinstalls all packs from fresh.
I have so much problem with installation an expension pack on yamaha psr s-650. Alas that they only want ro sale but dont explain how it works. This tutorial is perfect but not working with psr s-650.
I would be interested to know how to download the Tyros 5 styles from the download page and install onto Genos as I haven't figured that out yet
Hi Leigh, A great tutorial and well presented. I followed the steps (on my SX900) and when executing on the keyboard got the message: Cannot execute quick installation. Install with a full installation (.ppi/.cpi) Any idea what the problem may be? Cheers Geoff
yes - don’t use Cpi make sure you choose full pack as the quick install doesn’t work

Great video but - I have the problem that the file saved from the Genos to the usb is an empty file - 0 Kb's. When I export I do not get any error messages, it tells me that the fil .N27 is saved on the usb. My usb is not blank but neither is yours? It is saved in the rrot of the USB but empty :-( Any ideas?

Thank you for a clear tutorial, really appreciated it. I am however facing a problem, when saving the pack install file, what only allows me to save as .cqi or .cpi, instead of the .ppi shown in your video. Why is this happening?
When trying to install the created .cqi or .cpi file in the Genos, I get an error message saying "Data could not be accessed" possibly because its not a .ppi file. Any advice? thank you.
You need to save as PPI as the quick load doesn’t work.

I got genos 1 with pack sample for its. Now, I upgraded to genos 2, can I use sample genos 1 file to load to my new genos 2. File ppi from genos 1.

I think I could not explain my question properly...say we installed an expension pack with the help of YEM now it is there on the instrument but somehow we lost the copy which was on the computer.. due to any reason like virus or hardware failure now if we install another pack on the instrument do we have to part with the one which was earlier uploaded...

Zonglee Entertainment you can’t export packs from Genos - this has been done to stop you from copying packs.

When loading CPF, "Pack could not be imported because there is no instrument capable to use this pack"! What does this f.... error mean?😡😡
It either means the pack is not compatible with your instrument or you haven’t imported an instrument to install it onto.

Hi for some Reason the Entertainment Pack will not show up in my Genos I have a Desktop and a laptop both using Expansion on it, no go on both the Entertianment pack, followed your Videos.
Manager showing the Genos, Showing the Pack clicked on to , clicked on import pack, installed, clicked on mt Geno , all voices and other all checked marked, strange thing happed, Window 10 said it blocked Genos , then I allowed it to installed to my stick in the Genos, ticked on the Genos the Expansion ticked on Pack Installation, was blank>
I tied most everything, about ready to give up.
My 2.0 Superior , that's the only pack that is installed 2.0, I had a smaller Pack installed, did not like it I un ticked it, removed it from my thumb drive too!
pack went in smooth as silk, I have Playlists, and fill with lots of Styles from my Tyros4.
I have the latest
manager and Firmware.

This sounds like your keyboard needs to be updated to the latest firmware version and your expansion manager must be the latest version.

You said use a blanc usb in the genos to download info to the pc , but you seem to have the 80’s pack on the same usb is this ok. Thanks
klangdownab910 that’s because I loaded that pack into the software. Start with a blank USB to make things easier to find.
