    The tibialis anterior is one of the three primary muscles of the anterior compartment of the leg, also known as the dorsiflexors of the foot. It runs mediocaudally from the lateral tibia, interosseous membrane and crural fascia and inserts on the medial cuneiform and first metatarsal bone.
    The tibialis anterior muscle serves as the leading muscle for the neurovascular pathway running towards the ankle (deep fibular nerve, anterior tibial artery and vein).
    Upon contraction, the tibialis anterior causes the toes to be drawn upwards towards the anterior leg, which causes the heel to point downwards. This is called dorsiflexion (synonym: dorsal extension). The second function of the tibialis anterior muscle is inversion of the foot which is also sometimes referred to as supination of the foot.
    In this short tutorial we will go through the anatomy facts about the tibialis anterior muscle: origin, insertion, innervation and functions.
    - 0:21 tibialis anterior origin and insertion
    - 0:50 innervation of the tibialis anterior muscle
    - 1:05 functions of the tibialis anterior

    I thought the function was dorsal flexion( not dorsal extension) and supination

      Dorsal extension and dorsal flexion mean the same thing, they indicate that the movement is done towards the dorsal(back of the foot) side.

    Tibialis ANTERIOR DORSIFLEXES the ankle PLANTAR EXTENSION

    • @Kenhub
      @Kenhub  9 років тому +1

      Valentina Cabreira vieira Hi Valentina, to make it clearer we should have used dorsiflex. The terms "dorsiflexion" and "plantar flexion" refer to flexion between the foot and the body's dorsal surface, which is considered the front of the leg; while flexion happens between the foot and the body's plantar surface, which is the back of the leg. Those terms are used to make things a bit simpler since technically "extension" of the ankle joint refers to dorsiflexion, which can be considered counter-intuitive as the movement reduces the angle between the foot and the leg.

      +Vuk Cevu Hi Vuk! The terms supination/pronation - inversion/eversion are used interchangeably when referring to movements of the foot as well.
