  • We've been looking at the anatomy of the leg (the bit of the lower limb distal to the knee and proximal to the ankle) in recent weeks, so let's take a look at the muscles, nerves and arteries in the anterior and lateral compartments here.

    I wish we could all agree to get rid of the "Peroneal" label and just go with fibular instead. It is far less confusing

    Sam....you are the best anatomy teacher I have found yet, and I am SO grateful! I have been struggling and overwhelmed with my anatomy text and studies for many weeks now, and no matter how creatively or repetitively I tried to approach the material I just couldn't get it to stick...until now!! Thank You!! :)

    Nice Sam....."the usual". Tell your kids...to try walking "backwards to strengthen the anterior flexors too....this creates synergy and contralateral strength with respect to the calves and soleus muscles....which get "much too overworked". This will eventually get rid of shin splints,...and help with plantar fasciitis of the foot.
    Also kids/watch someone called the "Knee Over Toes" guy.
    Cool....wish I was back at college. If I could start over....I'd study anatomy and "steal Sam's job". Cheers.

    Great videos Sam. In your excitement, I believe you said that extensor digitorum longus originates from the "lateral condyle of the tibia, and the tibia and the interosseous membrane" 6:05
    This is not totally correct. The EDL originates from the lateral tibial condyle and interosseous membrane (as you correctly state), however is takes origin from the upper 2/3 of anterior surface of shaft of fibula (not tibia).
    Keep up the great videos! I recommend them to my class all the time!

    The part about the deep peroneal nerve and the importance of dorsiflexion resonates with me so much. Years ago I compressed that nerve for so long by sitting on my legs that it temporarily paralyzed my Tibialis anterior. I had the foot drag, high knee gait, and even after I was getting movement back my foot slapped the ground for quite a while because it was so weak. If there’s one part of anatomy I’ll never forget, it’s that. Lol

    extensor digitorum longus originates from lateral condyle of tibia, upper 2/3 of anterior fibular & interosseous membrane.

  • @zack_120
    @zack_120 6 місяців тому

    The fibularis longus is also very important for plantar flexion during biking, as learnt thr a painful experience. Since both inversion and eversion are inactive with the foot on the pedal, the muscle works as a plantar flexer along with the caf muscles. Once, after a normal hours long ride and a lunch, intense pains started in the fibula head as soon as the ride resumed. So, the relatively small muscle must be stressed too much during the long ride before the lunch but the soreness is delayed till after the lunch break. It's weird, however, as this never happened prior or thereafter in my multi-decades biking practice.

    Really great. I am learning a lot about my legs...
    The only thing I would add is how clever all this anatomy is for suppoerting the whole body while running/walking on rough surfaces (up/down and across a hill). I walk a lot across country, and that obviously matters to me. Maybe another reason for the complex inversion and eversion setups as well as the dorsiflexion...

    Hi Sam, I am so happy to run across your video, This is very interesting to me because I am having a lot of problems with my left lower leg, The i think you said anterior muscle , maybe the extensor Hallucis longus muscle and the yellow nerve that runs down on top of it on the front of the leg,,,,,, , My pain is approx, 4" above the foot. I have a few question if you can answer for me, I had a MRI and doctor said it shows nothing,,,, you can feel a space the size of your thumb in above mentioned area and with walking it it terrific pain, This has been for 5 years, and getting where I can not walk at all, ...If you look at this model above right where the cut is to remove the muscle is about same location where my problem is , Can you please help me, Thank you Bonnie,,
