  • How to install insulation foam board with radiant barrier to shed.
    Installing R5 insulation foam board to the solar shed work shop how to. The insulation project was one of many options and I chose this insulation idea over fiberglass insulation with an OSB plywood. The insulation foam board is very similar to the closed cell that is used in spray foam except it has a radiant barrier installed. The insulation used under the sheds roof will also be installed behind the siding of the shed. The shed insulation thickness is not the greatest compared to R13, R19 or R30. This project was a how to do it yourself insulation weekend project.
    The insulation I used was not the cheapest but went this route due to OSB going way up in price. R13 or R19 insulation would of been a better choice. The Shed feels much cooler after the insulation project and the ceiling is about 40 degrees cooler. The window unit I installed is still running non stop since the walls are just made of 3/8" siding. I hope you enjoy the video and this is the way I did my install which may be right or wrong. Have fun and be safe out there.
    I want to insulate the walls as well but will see how the prices change over the next few months.
    Here is some insulation I also checked out but was not local to me.

    Just so you know, thermal cameras can't really measure the surface temp of reflective surfaces such as glass and aluminum foil. The cooler temps showing up there on the insulation are reflected from the lower area. You can test this by thermally looking at your own reflection in a window or the foil surface. That foil surface doesn't look super reflective, so it won't be as bad but the general principal is the same. Also, for those wanting to insulate for cold weather, polyiso foam board shouldn't be used as its R value performance goes down the colder it gets. This is due to the blowing agent gasses inside the foam condensing to liquid starting around 60 degrees F. This in turn makes the material more thermally conductive, lowering its R value to about R-2 per inch at 15 degrees F. Most insulation R value goes up with colder temps, but not Polyisocyanurate.

      Thanks for the quick lesson on the thermal cameras. We live in hot climate but also learned something new on how insulation and cold weather act. Thanks for the information and I will pin comment for others to see.

    So do I need an air gap some videos yes some no 😢

    • @Zoidberg227
      @Zoidberg227 12 днів тому

      Yes. Anything in contact with the metallic surface will either conduct heat into -- or out of -- it. The reason it works on foam board with the metal facing in is that it won't conduct heat into the air well (air is a poor conductor), and it also won't re-emit it (much) as radiant heat, because highly reflective things tend to be poor radiators. So, the heat stays in the assembly and ultimately gets re-radiated outside instead of inside.

    Ok , i have i new shed , and i wanted to put some insulTion at the roof. I know nothing about it.....i bough some plain foam panels , i cut them to size and put them touching the wood panels ( they fit good under pressure) on top of that, i put the silver. Barrier...i staple it. But i stopped when somebody told me was wrong..now am not sure. It made sense to have a panel foam barrier in between the wood panel and the silver heat barrier. Am i wrong?

    This video helped but I am still a little dumb founded on how I will go about my project.I have a wood shed on my property with a flat metal roof. The shed I believe was possibly a chicken coop or where the guy kept his dog during the winter.The metal roof has a good sized gap all around from the walls and trying to figure out what to do with that..My plan is to tear out the rotting sub floor put down a new sub floor,and to insulate this shed as the walls seem fine.My plan is to make this shed into a mini cabin/Japanese style interior.What would you suggest to use to insulate on a budget and to prevent mold and mildew as this shed is in a moist wooded area.Will I have to vent it somehow and if so how?.This will be primitive as well no electrical work and will be heated with a mini wood burner.I planned on using foam board but what would be the best kind for this and will I need anything else?.The interior wall will be some sort of bamboo paneling.How would you go about insulating the metal roof?.I know its a lot but this is my first major project and any advice would be great.

    So I finally finished the shed insulation project. The width not diameter of the rafters were suppose to be 24" on center but some were 21" and others close to 23" inside of 2x6s. I spent 3 days only working small amount of time due to the heat we get here in South Texas.

    Radiant barrier works best with an air space rather than pressed directly against the wood. A 1/4" or even just a 1/8" air gap would improve it's efficiency.

    • @stiksandstones
      @stiksandstones Рік тому +1

      How can you leave an airgap with these types of panels? I was going to just slap up some in my tuffshed like this, but, common sense tells me they need to allow some airflow? (is that 'radiant'?).
      Thanks

    • @shrugger1
      @shrugger1 Рік тому +1

      @@stiksandstones Ideally, the greater the gap the better as it radiates the heat back outward. But as long as it's not touching the outer wall there won't be conduction heat transfer into the foam.

    Hey man I'm trying to do that same thing to my shed. I have a 8000btu portable air conditioner as well. I also live in south Texas. So I'm wondering, how cool did your shed get? I need to maintain about 80-85°F in the day, do you think it's possible with our situation? My shed also has black shingle roof.

    • @cutweldngrind
      @cutweldngrind  2 роки тому +1

      I haven't taken any readings actually as I have been super busy. I also only did the roof and did block most of the radiating heat from on top. I think 80-85 should be doable and I have my unit set at 78F and when I am inside I do lower it early in the day. I could not work in the shed before and now its someone comfortable. I do suggest going thicker on the insulation if possible, I was going to put R13 in the walls but due to having many obstructions I simple stopped there.

    This is something I like to do on my shed. I want to get the foam board with foil on one side. Now I want to keep the heat out in the summer and try to keep heat in the winter. Would you suggest foil side in or out? and is it sound proof working? I want to know by doing foam board insulation does it help for the sound ?

    • @cutweldngrind
      @cutweldngrind  2 роки тому

      The insulation board was a test I did and so far the heat is not as bad as before. I only installed on the roof so for sound proofing it would be hard to say as all the walls just have a sheet of siding. They do recommend a gap between the foil and moisture barrier which I left out. I would recommended you search what material you can find local and just search for instructions or recommendations on their site. Some sheets of foam board will post instructions as well. Locally I only had board with no foil and this dual foil material.

    I ve got a metal shed with uneven surface walls and want to apply bubble wrap insulation. How do i do it? Just silicone it on the metal walls ? I can t use nails or clips?!? How do i go about this?

    • @cutweldngrind

      There is a few options. You can install small wooden strips attached to frame of building and simply staple the barrier. You can also install wires, straps or chicken fencing to hold back the barrier but wont look as nice. There may be other options but these are the ones that came to my mind.

      From what I read the Radiant Barrier should go facing outward, the goal is to reflect the radiant heat and prevent the sun from heating up insulation. I'm also no Pro so I'm mainly commenting to see if somebody else says otherwise

    • @cutweldngrind
      @cutweldngrind  2 роки тому

      I went this method just to remove some heat radiating through ceiling since are summers exceed 110f easily. If the shed was just a shell I would probably do R13 all around unless I had someone local with spray foam. The insulation boards are expensive if you want higher rating.

      If I am correct I used 1 5/8 dry wall screws. The screws were not meant to go through insulation but to serve as a resting point. The screws go into the sides of my 2x6 boards and not into the top osb.

      This is a small shed that I hardly work in during the day so I decided to try the insulation board to block some of the heat from the ceiling. My intention was to cover the walls with pallet wood that I was collecting but due to work I have basically stopped on the shed. I did see an improvement as the window unit now cuts out and before it would run non stop.
