This Harley-Davidson CVO Makes Absolutely No Sense... For Real This Time

  • The Harley-Davidson CVO Pan America makes absolutely no sense, not that a Harley-Davidson CVO makes any sense to begin with but were on another level of nonsense here. Normally with Harley-Davidson CVO these are on road going Harley-Davidson motorcycles which reduce the chance of the motorcycle being torn up or damaged. The CVO Pan America makes zero sense, you have a adventure touring motorcycle made to cruise the highways, go off road, get dirty, get torn up. This makes little sense considering the Pan America is already 20+ thousands of dollars, but let's add on another 10 grand in limited edition parts and accessories not to mention custom paint. Are you really going to use this Pan America as intended, do you really want to even scratch it?

Absolutely, there’s definitely a market for it. BMW is another and they do not have the fit and finish of this CVO. The people that buy it play with a normal person’s income.

@W9HJBill ... good point there Bill. The corporate world is rather interesting. It seems to be trendy to hire an ex-leisurewear CEO and put him at the helm of an automotive company. The same happened with James Curleigh, who I'd also call a 'shoe salesman' was appointed CEO of Gibson Guitars (to his credit he did last 5 years) and what's he doing now? Selling plastic storage cases (Pelican). I wonder what Jochen Zeitz's next gig will be?

Absolutely, I don’t want a bike for a collection to pass on to some guy when I’m dead or save it for trade in value. I want to ride the snot out of it. Have you seen Adam Sandoval’s “Warhorse”? That’s how Harley’s are meant to be ridden. The scratches and dings are badges of honor for an Adventure rider. You don’t go get the paint repaired and wring your hands over it. When I dumped my Africa Twin on the Dalton Highway in Alaska I just picked it up and went on. Slapped a Dalton sticker next to the scratch and it was a legit conversation piece. Live man, no regrets!

I love the Pan Ams. Although at 70, I probably shouldn't be riding a 150hp dirt bike. Quite honestly, I don't think any of the CVOs make much sense. A little bit of paint, a few Christmas tree ornaments, and an extra $10-25K? I don't think so.

I'm an old dirt bike rider. Rode since I was a kid. I look at that bike and my first thought is 'that's a big bike to be taking in the dirt'. Maybe I got the wrong idea of what a dirt bike is vs an adventure bike. I dunno. Nieither appeal to me anymore. It's really hard physical effort riding in the dirt. I'd call it a young man's game. Just me. I'll stick to the street from now on. But boy was that fun times riding all day in the mountains on the back trails and going X country. Come end of day, I was shot! LOL Thanks for another great video.

Main point of these bikes is far from dirt bike things. Think same as an SUV, 95% on the road and mainly a touring or commute bike. But you can load it up and take it camping and access remote spots down fire service roads. BMW has been doing this for years and it is admittedly quite fun now that I am getting older

Everyone gets hung up on the cvo title. Those are just letters. They shouldn't tell you how or what you can or can't do with your motorcycle. It's a fully tricked adv bike straight from the factory, and the price is pretty fair considering what people are spending on these bikes. I bet a fully tricked GS can't be had for under $30k ? It's an adv bike. Take it off road and ride it like an adv bike! This idea that you can't get your bike dirty or put miles on it if it says cvo on the tank is a waste of a perfectly good motorcycle.

I think I'm done with baggers - closing on 60 y/o and the baggers are getting nothing but heavier year after year. My PA will *never* see dirt, I wanted it for the sport touring capability. It's gonna be perfect for how I ride now, getting older. All that said - I also don't know why HD created a CVO version of this bike when I believe it's still finding its target audience, not sure how well (or not) sales are doing. Peace!

I was slow to appreciate the under-slung exhaust on the Touring bikes, starting in 2009, but it does reduce the risk of exhaust pipe burns. Harley riders love their traditional design. The more they try to follow trends, the more customers they will lose. I will say though, that there is a market for a high-powered water-cooled bar bike.

  • @dcccharles4569

I'm guessing the CVO Pan America is being marketed to the gentleman outdoor enthusiast who enjoys the outdoors with going camping, flyfishing, etc. I don't think most owners of these CVO's will ever trash their bikes by actually off-roading with them.
Moreover, the owners of such bikes by just knowing they have the ability to go off-road will in itself be reassuring. It will be gratifying to also own such a bike designed for both street and dirt trails applications.
Such owners attracted by the CVO Pan America exclusivity will rarely, if ever, actually take any serious off- road trails that might risk damaging the bike , or, causing themselves personal injury. In fact, many of these owners have probably never ridden a dirt bike but would find they can ride the Pan America when going to the great outdoors to meet their buddies versus ride their Cruiser.

What you have to remember here is that the CVO Pan Am also comes with all the bags and other accessories. It would cost you as much or more to take a regular Pan Am and accessorize like that. When you look at it, the fancy paint is pretty much free. So don’t worry about it, take the bike where you want to and have fun.

Of course if you look hard enough you can probably find a dealer that has a regular Pan Am with the bags thrown into the package also. But yeah if you’re going to add all that stuff anyway, get the CVO and be done.

Because now anything that is designated race or off-road use only you have to take all of the customers information information and it has to be turned in. The customer also has to sign paperwork, stating that bike will not be written on regular roads.

Some of the CVO bikes are pretty nice. One thing that I don't like is how misleading it is though when you look at the motors, it gives the impression that the motor is all Screaming Eagle, with it engraved on the cylinder heads. And for what you pay for some of these bikes they should be, they would be more worth the money if they entire motor was all high performance. Even though I love Harleys, the feel, sound, look, etc. I don't like how they undertune their motors from the factory, then they push this Screaming Eagle stuff. Now the mufflers, and carbs, throttle bodies they are good quality products. However they need to improve their cams where they increase the power more, the aftermarket like S & S and Andrew's, Feuling, etc got them beat.

I like the Pan America but, the CVO PanAm is like a lifted, big tire 4x4 that the most off roading it'll see is when you have to park it in the yard to make parking room for your relatives when you have a birthday party or something. I have a Pan Am and that motor is one of the greatest things HD has ever done. I know they have their core audience, but why oh why, are they not using that motor as the basis for a decent sport bike and going racing? They really have a chance to capture some new riders like they have been trying to do for years. I gotta believe with a few tweaks that motor could be the core of a decent sport bike. Instead we get 100 million down the Live Wire drain. It kind of drives me nuts.
But yeah the CVO thing for that bike makes little sense.

if we consider the prices of the parts that would need to be added to equip a special Pan América like this cvo version, then I think it's not such a bad deal...
the desire to acquire a Pan América is growing within me, I often ride on very small and very steep roads in the Pyrenees near my home in the south west of France and I am sometimes tempted to take forest tracks and the Pan is also a very good touring bike for long road trips, so I tell myself that it could better suit my use than my Low Rider S or my Heritage, apart from the fact that we move away a little bit of the custom spirit and long-stroke engines that I particularly like after many years of riding these machines..
    Greetings from France...

Holy crap there’s so many CVO road glides at dealers now. Yes I’m street glides. Not touring no big bikes. What I call a big bike is like a CVO limited dresser. That’s what I ride. I ride for comfort and I put miles on it lots of them. These things don’t even have electric locks no luggage nothing and that big ass screen I mean it’s nice but if we know Harley like we know Harley, it’s gonna mess up and keep messing up. Mine kept messing up until I replace it with the sound stream. It left me blank. It’s good I have my phone but that thing it doesn’t have any gauges something happens to the bike. You gotta carry a stick with you yeah man . Seems like Harley is just doing performance, which is nothing wrong with that but some of us people still like to go touring we like some performance for sure, but we like our comfort and we like to put on a lot of miles. I am not a bike nighter. Walking around Dress up like a biker. I’ll do that. That’s my thoughts there’s of cvo’s in the dealers and people are changing them all up. Painting them and everything. I guess that’s what you Gotta do now. Nothing wrong with it. Nothing wrong at all but are you calling it a CVO? I don’t get it.
