Watching you turn and listing to you describe what is happening is like the best kind of meditation....I think you are to wood turning what Bob Ross was to painting😊😊😊
Yesterday the steel bar for the 12 mm version arrived and today I have to order another one with 6 mm 😁. But that's no problem, I can make both at once. I'm already looking forward to working with them. As always, a nice video Tomislav. Nice to see how the number of your subscribers is growing 👍. Greetings Andreas
Yet another excellent video! Verses a regular skew, this does seem faster and certainly easier and smoother for coves. I had mentioned Rude Osolnik in the other exploration of this tool type. He would go into his shop around 2:00 AM and knock out 60 candlesticks by 6:00 using something very much like these tools, I think a wider version. Then breakfast and going off to teach. Your own production quota must be approaching something like this. So we appreciate the time investment in these videos all the more. Thanks, Greg
Thank you Greg, its similar but I always try to leave room to film videos and to have time for family as well... Finding good balance it can be hard... Thank you very much for appriciating all this 😀
Love the video! I have been making tops with a skew. Your method is faster and appears to be less likely to catch. My granddaughters sell these at craft fairs. My grandsons keep them to play with!
Unbelievable skills with a fantastic tool! I have a Sorby master spindle that is a very sweet tool that I just bought. I can cut end grain shavings that remain intact across the whole face that are probably thinner than a human hair. Super smooth no sanding needed, but it is harder to not leave slight ripples in the surface, compared to say a detail spindle gouge. It is similar to this tool but it is wider and much thinner in profile. I’m impressed with it but I feel I can’t be as aggressive with it like you are with this tool because it’s a fine line between a perfect cut and a catch. I haven’t had a significant catch with it but I have never cleared wood like you have here. I must have this tool!! It looks so flexible! Your ability with it is mind boggling and I must at least try to make one and see if I can approach using it like you do! Thanks again for sharing this with us all! You are the man!
Thanks for another great video. Looking forward to your next video on making and using this tool. Definitely going to make and use this tool. Thanks again.
Hi Tomislav, hope you’re well. I have taken delivery of 3 new tools and thought you may be interested in them after watching your skew gouge video. The tools are the Jason Breach box refinement tools. There is a modified bedan type straight tool, a negative rake curved scraper and an asymmetric ground 1/2” skew which is used without a handle. You should definitely check them out if you haven’t done so already as the grinds on them are really interesting. Oh, meant to say, they are made by Henry Taylor.
Thank you very much for suggestion, I have seen those tools from Jason, not my thing To be honest but it works for many turners...its s good set of tools
You have another subscriber from Santa Fe, New Mexico USA?! We will have to start a Tomislav fan club. You make everything look easy regardless of the tool used.
I repaired and made turning tools and handles to learn on a simple spindle lathe. I like how you made those spindle gouges. Just need a simple piece of quality steel(M2?) and something to grind with. I still need a small spindle gouge so I will be giving this a go. I have a suggestion for you. Once you get your gouge shaped well, move to a much slower grinder or wet wheel or slow diamond wheel or variable speed angle grinder......something that will not burn the tools edge. I could see straight away that your edge was soft and burnt. Thought for sure you would have fixed the edge off camera, but in the end you showed the tip edge was bent over. I am surprised you were able to do such fine work with that edge. No excuses, all you turners with finer tools LOL Imagine how good you will be with better steel and an edge that stays sharper longer. Should never bend lol ;-) I will have to make some spinning tops for practice, when I get or make a small gouge, and get my shop renovated/repaired further. I plan on a nice mallet or two to get started turning, again. Made a few things a decade or so ago. I just made my first paste waxes. I am anxious to try it on lathe projects. Amazing on tool handles, table saw, etc...
That looks like another very useful tool and goes on the ever-growing list of projects; thanks Tomislav, that list is never going to get smaller at this rate. 😄 Seriously, this does look like a really useful tool for spindle turning. Looking forward to seeing more techniques with this as you use it more. Have you encountered any negative aspects of these tools?
Thank you Mark, ohh the list is bigger every dan on my side as well😀 Well there is a few drawbacks, this smaller one can vibrate a bit if you are agresive like I am sometimes and if not carefull it can skate over which ruins wood a bit but other then that Works great
I have seen a number of variations of that tool, but never one with a concave top. That makes sense though. I have a number of Doug Thompson's fluteless gouges, which are similar, but don't have the top concave like that..... Tops are fun, but those are too small for me. Look up Gasing tops, from Malaysia. They are 8 to 10 inch diameter, and have a metal ring on the outside, and will spin for 5 or so minutes in dirt. Heavy cord to spin them with...... Some times bigger is better....
Thank you Sir, its Del Stubbs design which he saw from Sorensen brothers, aaa yes , indeed sometimes bigger is better but not sure what to do with giant spin top😉
Tomislav, I enjoy your videos immensely. You scare me a little bit when I see you work the way you do and I see what looks like bruises on your fingers. Please take care because I want to keep watching your videos far into the future!
No bruises, I do work around the house as well,in the yard so hands get damage.... That's normal if you work with hands.... No bad practice here... Thanks for watching
You make it look so easy 😂 I have a point tool I never use that could easily be converted into one of these and since I'm terrible with a skew, I think my point tool will be converted soon! Thanks for sharing! Stuart
I found a dull one of these in my roll of lathe tools when starting and never touched it. Tried to sharpen it but couldn't really get the hang of just how to go about it. Any videos of you shaping/sharpening yours Tomislav? I feel inspired to try mine out but definitely not in its currently very dull condition.
Awesome! Gotta get me some tool steel now. In fact, I’m going to get a couple pieces! How much different is this compared to the Skewchigouge? Seems like it may be a bit more forgiving??
Honestly I never got the chance of using skewchigouge,I had something similar but never liked it,this can take more wood and cleaner cut then similar tools in this categorie....
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning I understood that orange was OK for HSS but that blue was detrimental and should be ground off. Never mind. It didn't stop you doing a good job with an interesting tool. I have a 7.5mm bedan that may now change shape
I grind my two spindle detail gouges to a 30 degree angle like this. The shape of the nose is similar. Obviously the flute is slightly deeper though. What do your detail gouges look like, Tomislav? Thank you for another great video.
I have one detail gouge, and I have it with long point and it does work great , what I find the differnce between spindle gouge and this tool is the ease of getting into details ,deep corners and its as easy to use as spindle gouge
@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning thanks Tomislav. I had a go at making one but really struggled to put the shallow flute on the top. It just ended up looking like a mess. Will have to try again!
@@matthewpatrick7524 I find that doing only like 25mm from the edge works ok and slowly try to find the middle of the blade , once there lock the shoulders and hands and just move the blade left and right.... It does take little practice
Bedan has flat top, this one has hollow top, now biggest differentc between the two apart from one having a slight flute is that with the flute you have a little bit less resistants and it cut a bit easier....

Thank you,its just practice like with anything

Thank You for sharing a new tool to me .
A lovely little tool for a lovely little piece. Thanks for the demonstration!
Thanks Joris😀
Thank you for the tool demonstration. Very cool!
I have some of those 6mm tool blanks. Made a skew. Now I’ll have one of these tools as well. Thanks for sharing.
No problem Doug, Thanks for watching

I have a small one like that I’ve never used. I got it in a job lot on eBay . Now I know what to do with it. Cheers , thank you
Excellent, glad to hear that ☺️
Well, topologically it is still a spindle gouge, just the flute is sooo shallow... Thank you for the video!
Little bit different as with deeper flutes it can be a bit more agressive.... But its just another way of achiveing results 🤗
Hi Tomislav.Great tutorial. Cindy Drozda has a similar chisel. But it's made from Boul gouge.Thank you😊

8 mm is good size... thanks for watching

looks very much like a "Continental" gouge. Works a treat
Close but different, its excellent tool for learning skew basics

Ok I will make one !!

It looks like a spindle detail gouge.
Close but with shallower flute and more accute angle
I would love to try one of those 1/4" square 25-degree gouges. where in Santa Fe (John) did you get it?
Any 12mm wide straight across scraper or skew can be used to convert it, just make sure its HSS
I noticed that the tip of the tool had overheated.
Did this happen during the grinding or during use in the turning?
During grinding but its no problem for HSS steel unless you dunk it in water.
