Nile Rodgers (who was part of Chic) later said that the song was directed at how Studio 54 would casually reject "undesirable people" from entering, with "freak out" being a sanitized version of "f*** off"
Yes! The DJ's were playing their music at Studio 54 but when they wanted to get in the club, they weren't allowed into the club, so Nile & Bernard Edwards (the bassist) wrote it. "Good Times" is another dance banger from CHIC. Cannot tell you how important legendary producer Nile Rodgers is - Produced Bowie, Diana Ross, Duran-Duran, Steve Winwood, Madonna, you name it!
That's right, Rubell & Schrager wouldn't let them into the club, though they had an invite from GRACE JONES! Yep, they were mad & back at their apartment not far from there they were playing their guitars & screaming out the window for Studio 54 to "F*** OFF". The tune started to take form, they changed the chorus's famous chant to highlight a dance that was huge back then, "The Freak" & the rest is music history. Respect to you & yours.
It hit number one on the Billboard hot 100 and R&B charts in 1978. It was #1 on the Disco charts for 7 weeks. Billboard Magazine ranked it the number 3 song for all of 1978. From the same album Le Chic, "I Want Your Love" is a good song and was also a hit. By the way, you pronounce the band name SHEEK, just like they say it in the song.
"Studio 54" was the hottest nightclub in the country...located in late 1970s New York city. Come Friday into the weekend ppl dressed to the nines and waited with baited breath to be let in. The owner would come out and hand pick who would get in. If u didn't get picked..you swallowed your pride and waited for the next weekend. Celebs from every walk of life couldn't wait to be seen at "54".
And could you believe that before Chic hit the charts, Nile Rodgers of Chic and another member tried to get in to Studio 54 and they didn’t let him in; they went home and wrote “LeFreak” and the rest is history!!!
The rest of us went to "Elaine's", "Limelight", "Monster" (Greenwich Village) but everyone wanted to get into Studio 54 (not me though, too pretentious & I refused to beg at the rope - plus I was underage anyway). But from documentaries I saw they had 2 VIP rooms - VIP & VVIP. The VVIP were Margaret Trudeau (Justin's mom), Elizabeth Taylor, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Liza Minnelli, Bianca & Mick Jagger - even Jean Stapleton (Edith - All in the Family) were regulars. Underaged celebs like Michael Jackson, Brooke Shields & Tatum O'Neal were regulars there too.
This was a monster hit for Chic! Yes, the Freak was a dance in the late seventies/early eighties! That’s the magnificent legendary Nile Rogers on guitar and he went on to produce acts like Duran Duran, David Bowie, Madonna, Sister Sledge, Daft Punk, and many more! They also had big hits with I Want Your Love, Everybody Dance, and Good Times which was sample by the Sugarhill Gang for their mega hit Rapper’s Delight without permission! Chic sued and won! ❤️❤️
This was HUGE back in the day! I remember my older sister dancing to this with the dance team during a football halftime show. The whole stadium was rocking!
Chic was amazingly talented, the rhythm section of Nile Rogers , Bernard Edwards and Tony Thompson might have been the best ever. this group also featured a little known back up singer at the time named Luther Vandross. they wrote and produced for numerous other acts , sister sledge, diana ross , david bowie, madonna , power station etc .
Bernard Edwards and Nile Rogers would be instrumental in providing Queen bass player John Deacon with inspiratioin to create catchy bass lines used in Queen, such as "Another One Bites The Dust" and "Under Pressure".
The title was a message to the owners of Studio 54 who denied members of Le Cick entrance. Le Cick couldn't tell the " F_ck Off" so they told them Freak Out.
Le Freak was originally called "AWW F***K Off!" towards Studio 54. Studio 54 was notoriously difficult to get into. Nile Rodgers and Grace Jones went there only to have the door slammed in their faces with doorman shouting"F***K OFF!"
I remember roller skating to this song back in 1978 I was to young for the disco techs I can hear the next song that would play shake your groove thing by peaches and herb
It was No. 1 on the Billboard charts and it was a dance in the 70's called "Le Freak." Huge group in the 70's next to the Bee Gees. Other hits were>>>Good Times.....Everybody Dance.
Niles Rogers said he and his partner came up with the title to this song because they were not allowed in the door at Club 54,but the F was for another word entirely. That guitar sound was his trademark.
ICONIC!!!!!! Humongous dance hit back in the day!! I was sure y’all was gonna recognize it as sure as the beat dropped- also another huge one at our skating rink back then- 😁. Great one guys!! 💖💙👍✌️
Chic is pronounced sheek.. Nile Rodgers is a very talented man and has worked with many singers and bands. He's the man behind Chic.. He wrote and produced for sister sledge too.
This is my sister's ringtone on my phone because we listened to this song all the time. 8 track, radio, at the roller rink, every party and every school dance. It came out my senior year in high school.
Some of the best times of my life were spent dancing and skating to this song, PLEASE explore more “CHIC”; DISCO ROYALTY 👑 “Everybody Dance”, “I Want Your Love”, “Good Times”, “Dance, Dance, Dance” ❤️❤️❤️❤️
10 year old me skated many hours to this music 🎶 . Oh how I wished I could skate backwards like the cool kids 😎. "Freak out" was the signal to spin around and change direction. Sweet memories 💖
Possibly two of the greatest guitarists of the the fantastic 1970’s the late Bernie Edwards on bass and the utterly fantastic Nile Rogers on rythum guitar
Good Times was another big hit for Chic. Another group took the background of Good Times and made it into "Rapper's Delight". (Hip hop you don't stop a rockin to the bang bang boogie said up jumps the boogie to the rhythm of the boogie to be...), Everybody Dance, He's the Greatest Dancer (Chic wrote the song, but it was sang by Sister Sledge "We are Family. I got all my sisters with me...."). Chic wrote We are Family, too. Unfortunately, the bassist- I forget his name now- passed away in the late 70s because of drugs and diabetes. He was only 32. But Nile Rodgers ended up being a producer for David Bowie, working with Jermaine Jackson, Culture Club (Boy George and 'nem 😂), Sting, Stevie Wonder, Angie Stone, and Pharrell Williams.
I spent many nights in the disco dancing to this, we did have a dance to the rhythm of it. So much fun. Great exercise. disco music was the best dance era, period.
Wow brought me right back to eighth grade. This was a dance and it spent 6 weeks at number one on billboard. The guys went on to write humongous hits including the number ones:Upside Down for Diana Ross Let’s Dance for the late David Bowie and the monster hit for Madonna Cicconi Like A Virgin
Great reaction to a great song. Nile Rodgers was the man behind Chic. The band had been known prior as New York City. They had a nice song, I'm Doin' Fine Now as NYC. You might also react to Chics song My Feet Keep Dancing, along with the other song suggestions you got in the comments. Keep it going, Peace
I didn't know Niles,Bernard and Tony were in that band.My sister had the 45 of I'm doin fine now, great early 70's soul.It had a Philly soul sound to it.
Another iconic disco song that was always played at my family functions from when it first came out. Amazing party song! Takes me back to my early childhood days... I was about 7 maybe... the guitar... YES! Luuuuv this! Always will!
When they weren't let into Studio 54 ( the BIGGEST DISCO).. Their words were F**k Y**!!!! They wrote this song about that incident!!! EVERYONE LOVED IT!!
This group changed the game on how other groups n people dressed. After they came out, groups started dressing more conservative. People started dressing up to go to the clubs. It was crazy, everybody wanted to be Chic. The dance floor was full, when this played.❤
I love that you guys are just now discovering a lot of the 70s funk. ❤️❤️.... i'm a few years older than you guys so I was actually in the teen discos ( there was an adult , and then one day a week teen disco here where I live called the Poison Apple) It was cool inside it resembled a little bit of studio 54) it had clear see-through Lucite floors with disco lights everywhere and then a stage with lights Built into the floor panels ....Upstairs it had a cat walk where you could look over the rail and watch everybody dancing below💃🏻🕺🏻❤️
The song is about studio 54 disco, they were refused entry and came up with this song as a f u to studio 54. I'm 59 and was into disco till heavy metal lol oh their name is pronounced like sheek
Thank you, I love this disco song. I’m 70 years old and I remember dancing this in the disco’s. We use to go to the Wildcat house and party down, its a college bear a big place, big dance floor.
this group put out the song(good times) which was the sample for the first sucessful rap record "rapper's delite" by sugarhill gang. they had many more hits!
you raised both your arms in front of you, shawn then you gyrated towards your partner while she did the same. this dance craze caused a lot of fist fights back in the day.
This song was originally written as a protest to Studio 54, the most popular and most exclusive Disco in the world in the late 70's. Located in NYC, they only let hand picked people into the club. Visited by celebrities and entertainers alike but that wasn't a prerequisite for getting in. The more outlandish and unusual you looked, the better your chance of getting in. Chic showed up one night and they never let them in. So the original words of the song were F**k off to protest the club for not letting them in. Their manager told them that he felt that if they changed those two words, they just might have another hit song. They did and ironically Le Freak became one of the most played songs at Studio 54, as well as clubs across the country and the radio.
Nile Rogers is the guitarist and he also produced hits for so many other artists; Madonna, Bowie, Daft Punk, The Pointer Sisters. He wrote the songs, played guitar on them, produced them. His guitar is even called "The Hitmaker" because it's been on so many number one songs. He is still touring today, go see him if you get the chance.
It was a dance. Guitarist Nile Rogers said the song was inspired by them not being allowed in Studio 54 (a hot New York club in the disco era) after Grace Jones invited them. Their actual thought was "F**k Off!" but they toned it down to "Freak Out!"
One of the best bands of all time, so much talent! ALL of their musik was good EVERY last one! Yes, it was a dance called "The Freak" back in the day. The black lead singers are doing the dance in the video.
Nile Rogers and his band Chic- huge disco band! And Nile is a legendary writer and producer- many #1 hits. He produced and played on Bowie’s Modern Love album- who he introduced to the still little know guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughn , who also played on that album, and he wrote We are Family for Sister Sledge, produced Diana Ross, Madonna- Like a Virgin. Nile Rodgers (who was part of Chic) later said that the song was directed at how Studio 54 would casually reject "undesirable people" from entering, with "freak out" being a sanitized version of "f*** off"
Yep! Heard Nile say it himself in a documentary
Yep, came to comments to say just that.

Took the words right out of my mouth. His group was "casually rejected".
Another great disco song from the late 70s that I think you would enjoy is Boogie Oogie Oogie by A Taste of Honey,
Oogie wasn't in the same league with this bunch!
Awesome song!!
Please please react to this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ❤️
Yes, I agree. They should hear that!
A number one disco hit from 1979. This R&B's band had quite a few hits. My favorite was "Everybody 💃 Dance"
Thanks, rhythm and blues!
I Want Your Love was my Favorite.
Everybody used to do the freak when tht came on
Try Marvin Gaye come get to this
This song came out in 1978. Good times came out in 1979
"Studio 54" was the hottest nightclub in the country...located in late 1970s New York city.
I hope they didn't have "baited" breath. That would smell nasty. How about "bated" breath.
And could you believe that before Chic hit the charts, Nile Rodgers of Chic and another member tried to get in to Studio 54 and they didn’t let him in; they went home and wrote “LeFreak” and the rest is history!!!

YESSSSS! Roller skated my butt off to this song in my preteens! Thanks for the memories!
Me too! Disco had the perfect beat 💓 for roller skating.
Chic (pronounced "sheek") had another great hit in - I Want Your Love.
This was in the Disco era and yes, the freak was a dance!
This was very popular at my School Dances and Parties and at the Skating Rinks. Everyone got up to dance to this song.
Tony Thompson played with Led Zeppelin at Live Aid too.
100% Bernard Edwards is a Bass God
I love that Bernard Edwards bass-line. I remember dancing to this in the 80s with my then, soon to be wife. Good Times :)
Bernard Edwards and Nile Rogers would be instrumental in providing Queen bass player John Deacon with inspiratioin to create catchy bass lines used in Queen, such as "Another One Bites The Dust" and "Under Pressure".
This is my favorite from them in 1979 Chic - Good Times
Don't know much about disco but this was a popular song, played everywhere during that era.
The title was a message to the owners of Studio 54 who denied members of Le Cick entrance. Le Cick couldn't tell the " F_ck Off" so they told them Freak Out.

This was like the beginnings of disco. And it was so much fun!
This came out 1979. Disco began about 1975 and ended about the end of 1981. Do not know why writers let disco die. It was so much fun.
@@virginiadurant9954
Disco didn’t die - it was murdered by creeps like Steve Dahl.
This was actually nearer to the end of Disco...
This was in the last months of disco. You shouldn’t post unless you know what your talking about.
@@virginiadurant9954disco born in '71/72
I remember roller skating to this song back in 1978 I was to young for the disco techs I can hear the next song that would play shake your groove thing by peaches and herb
