Fantastic. I have been playing for many years. I struggled with this alternating base line, cord picking & rythemic structure. This has finally shown me how this is done. Back then we only had recodings, taped versions. It felt like the information needed just wasn't there. Thank you. You really got this nailed down.
Great lesson, as always, David. I love the way you approach things: not just teaching us note for note, but the underlying concepts and approaches to a piece. As you say, - a 'jumping off point'. Teaching us to fish, as opposed to giving us a fish. Thank you.
I'm new to this channel but stumbled across this. I've been wanting to learn this tune for aeons! Always looking for new stuff to learn and this is one of the most comprehensive channels I found so far. Keep up the good work David!
Thank you for the time and effort you put into this lesson David, ive been noodling around with it a couple of times, usually about 20 mins then i take my attention away and when i come back it gets easier, at least that works for me and now im starting to get somewhere with it. The 3 string alternate bass line im struggling with but al get there too ..
Yeah, that 5-4-6-4 thumb stuff is tricky, but it does feel more natural over time. And I think you're on the right track with those short practice increments, for what it's worth.
David - Thanks so much for this. You really teach it well. I was wondering if you would give a class on Ry Cooder's rhythm guitar for "Alimony" That would be great! Thanks again
David I love this lesson. I've been hearing Ry Cooder since the 60's. But I've never figured him out. This is a great explaintion video. If I can learn this, next is Jesus is on That Mainline. thanks again
I know what you mean; for the longest time it didn't even occur to me to try and sort out what was going on because it just sounded like so much magic. But it can be done :-). Here's a hint for Jesus On The Mainline, which astonished me: pretty sure that intro is just open position chord shapes in the key of C. But I'll see if I can't get to that one somewhere down the line.
Thanks David! Another great lesson on my favourite style of music. I fell in love with Leon Redbone back in 75 and have been hooked on finger style blues ever since. I will be working on this one by Cooder
David, you are an awesome teacher. Do you have any CD's out for sale? CD's with you playing & singing these old time treasured songs? You are a master of the guitar's alternating base line while swinging those intricate Melody notes. Tks for sharing your knowledge.
David , Great interpretation of Ry Cooder’s style. Thanks! I was wondering if you were familiar with Joseph Spence? An amazing Finger stylist from the Bahamas. Ry Cooder got a lot of his fingerstyle technique from Spence. It would be great if you could give us a lesson. Thanks again.
Oh, it's you... no no come in, I'll get the kettle on... have you eaten ?...Come now, there's some chile in the fridge from the day before yesterday... yeah better than fresh, just take a seat, take your time. It's been a while. I'll fetch you a guitar in a bit.
David, great lesson but had a question. The alternating bass - are you sure that Ry plays it with the A? I hear only a droning D, alternating between the 6th and 4th strings?
Hi Warren - Thanks for letting me know! I've had trouble with a few of these links and have been meaning to go in and troubleshoot it all. If you drop me an email through my site, I'll be happy to get you sorted out with the tabs you're looking for or a subscription to the newsletter.

Ry Cooder doesnt sound even close as you present him to be, you add dept into your teaching making us embrace something you are not taking the credit for, its you that makes this Ry Who? Sound cool. (Sorry if im harsh)
This is still the overall insight into how to learn & play this song. Thank you so much.

Great lesson David! Thanks. I love the way you lay out the building blocks and then layer on each level.

Wonderful stuff. Amazing what a drop D can do. I’m going to check the song out now
More fabulous teaching and playing - love the black background, David
Thanks Daniel - I thought it would feel kind of severe, but I'm digging it too; I think it's easier to see the guitar neck, for sure.
Fantastic!
Thanks, Brian!
Very authenticly cool!... And useful. Love the letter...yes you should sign up for the letters!
Hey, Carlos - Thanks; I'm glad you dig it. And with encouragement like that, I'll definitely keep the letters coming :-).

Oh, right on, I hadn't thought of working out something by him. Is there a definitive fingerpicking thing of his you'd recommend checking out first?
Ha! Hey David - yeah, it has been a while. Took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do next, but I'm back on the horse now, I think.

I'm not, to be honest. I'd have to go back and check, and it's entirely possible I just put that A in without even thinking about it!
@@FretboardConfidential sounds great regardless. Not an easy tune to get the groove right.
Want to sign up but cannot ???
