I could see how some people might not like wayne which is completely fine. But i just think he is great. Imo, he is the most fleshed out character in Era 2. I saw his constant humor as him trying to mask his pain and conflict within his mind, which is incredibly relatable. Wayne’s jokes dont always land with me but that felt intentional. When the joke didnt land, i saw that as his mask cracking a tiny bit and you could feel those cracks adding onto him up until the climax of his character arc. He is very clearly a flawed person and i dont think i’ve seen masking written into a character this well before which is very impressive on Sanderson’s part. While i still like Era 1 more, I really enjoyed Era 2 and Im looking forward to Era 3
Same for me. I really feel like this is the best place to read it. I didn't feel like it really spoiled anything in Era 2. And being that Mistborn was mine and many others entry into the Cosmere.. Secret History is the first "glimpse behind the curtain" into the Cosmere as whole. So seeing that was exciting and really motivated me to keep going.
Totally agree with a lot of what you said in this video. Having just finished The Bands of Mourning and enjoying it, I am curious to see how I will feel about The Lost Metal.
Stepping up your editing game I see 🧐lol Great video. I've shouted about how much I enjoy Mistborn era 2 even more than era 1 (and I humbly recommend a video I made comparing the two as a companion piece to your excellent breakdown here). I do think the shift in tones between the eras (and the inclusion of characters like Wayne) is ultimately going to be the deciding factor for many people. I personally really dug the lighter tone and I loved Wayne! I also really like that era 2 wasn't massively scaled for the same reason I can't stand MCU movies now: when EVERYTHING is a world-ending threat, EVERYTHING feels the same. Gimme those small stories in a bigger universe and make me care about it. I find myself gravitating towards those types of stories a lot more now.
Thanks! I wanted to play around with editing a little bit more this year. You are right about the tone shift probably being hard for most people. How did you feel about the Lost Metal? It felt like a half step to branching out to that epic scale compared to the the first three.
@@TomOrange I liked Lost Metal a lot, definitely more than you did haha it certainly felt like the book Sanderson wrote specifically so that he could link this era to the wider cosmere, and therefore it ended up being a bit scaled up. However, by then I was so thoroughly engaged with all the characters I didn't mind it and was happy with the resolution
Love this video! We've definitely been wary of starting era 2 because of all the mixed reactions we've heard, but this video made me want to get into it sooner rather than later. I really like the idea of seeing the historical and religious effects of era 1. The negatives don't sound like enough to keep me away, although I do typically yearn for that epic scale you mention. - Jesse
There is plenty to criticize in era two but I think a lot of people go into it expecting more of era one and that's just not the case. I hope you enjoy it! I had a good time with it.
Era 2 is my favorite cosmere stuff. I'm in the minority I know, but man everything about it hits exactly how I want it to. The action, the setting, the characters, the pace, it's great
I finished lost metal and I still don't understand what issues people have with. Sure, he wore me down a little. His humor become more juvenile and frustrating. But I don't think he is the worst character Brandon has ever written. His arc in the final book could have been more flushed out but what he did in the end made so much sense. However, there were bits and pieces that did not make sense like how he was able to become so rich? How was he able to predict where to invest so accurately ? Why was he calling himself dead? Why did he try to stop wax marrying steris in the last book ? Overall, this series is not Brandon's best work.
Man, I guess I don't get out enough to encounter all of the Wayne issues. I liked him. I think we found out more about him and he became less cut and dry. He was a more rounded character that was trying to work through some trauma that he wasn't well equipped to deal with. I do agree that Era 2 lacked certain weight to it, but I think it did a great job of fleshing out what can happen over centuries. The world building was fantastic and I think it's setting up for a more Cosmere crossover centered story in the future, which I can't wait for.
I did not mind him for a lot of the series but he kind of wore me down after a time and I enjoyed him less. It is 100% setting up Cosmere stuff and while Im excited for those connections I dont think it made the most compelling story doing it. Happy Reading!
I dont know what it says about me, but I loved wayne as much as wax, the character was really one of the better parts about the books. His developments, while not as great or impactful as Wax"s, were still pretty well done given his character overall good video review though XD
SPOILER WARNING I felt like era 1 & 2 hand near identical endings, the person you think is the sidekick is actually the hero who saves the day. I think the reason I prefer era 2’s ending more is because I really liked Wayne (favorite Mistborn character so far), I felt like he’s such a gripping and humane character, he’s the best friend, not the best friend trope, the actual best friend who will do anything for his people, he’s the guy who tries to hide his agony by trying to spread joy, he’s the man, a very flawed man, but THE man when you need him. Meanwhile, Sazed feels like a blank slate after 7 books. (No offense to era 1, I just liked the ending of era 2)
Era 2 is not High Fantasy, more like Historical Fantasy engrained in a Wild West setting of a world becoming industrialized. Faster pace, less "stake", less "epic", more direct. It's very different. It's fine ... but I like Era 1 better. I think Era 1 is the best and most complete high fantasy story ever writte

That is an interesting way of looking at Wayne. I have more problems with him outside of his humor. I am very excited for Era 3 as well
Decided to go the route of reading Secret History after era 1 before era 2 and I’m so glad I did made it way more emotional for me
I read Secret History after the first two era two books

You'll have to let me know! It seems you either love it or not so much.

It is worth the read since its still Sanderson. The era one interaction is really cool to see. I know you'll enjoy that aspect of it
read era 1 and wanted to read era 2 saw a lot of negatives and u gave me kind of hope Mr Orange

@@TomOrange i agree with you and thanks man , keep up the good work
Had no idea people didn’t like Wayne. He’s literally the best character
Its a pretty mixed bag with most of the people I talk with!
Era 2 is my favorite cosmere stuff. I'm in the minority I know, but man everything about it hits exactly how I want it to. The action, the setting, the characters, the pace, it's great
Nothing wrong with being in the minority! Im glad you you enjoy it as much as you do!
I loved all of it, I’m honestly surprised people don’t like Wayne 😅
I felt the same way until the second two books. So I can see both sides
I am 30% in the first book and so far Wayne is my favorite. Idk why people hate him
I liked him for the most part but did have my issues with him. Especially in the Lost Metal
I finished lost metal and I still don't understand what issues people have with.

@@TomOrange I can totally see that. Hopefully the set up is worth it for the books that follow.
Greta video! I like Era 2 way better than Era 1 so far. It’s a lot of fun for me.
Thanks! I agree that it is a very fun time. A really different tone from era one
@@TomOrange yes I agree it’s definitely a different tone

Nothing wrong with liking him! Everyone has different tastes and I’m glad you did like him
Freddy Mercury????
I get that one a little bit
You look like Henry Cavil!
Great vid
Thanks!

That’s all a very fair take!
❤❤❤
Thanks for watching. Hope you enjoyed!
Meanwhile Wayne is my favorite era 2 character 😅
Early on I didnt mind him. Just towards the end
I couldn’t even finish the first book, I didn’t like it at all unfortunately
Nothing wrong with that! Reading should be fun and if you dont enjoy a read no shame in putting it down.
