02:00 - 05:37 Seeing the generative story of our time. Beyond the narrative of catastrophe, there is ongoing learning, growth and progress happening. Actively look for the forces of good in the world.
06:14 - 09:46 Living the questions. In facing the world's pain, have the courage to ask and dwell with questions themselves rather than rushing for answers. Questions can guide us to new possibilities.
10:25 - 14:22 Pursuing wholeness. We are called to become more whole human beings, not just professionalized ones. Strive in life-giving directions and embrace the complexity of human nature.

Watching this was a profoundly moving experience for me. I’ve been listening to On Being, witnessing Krista embody these practices and teachings over and over again through her deeply human, soulful, gratifying conversation spaces. To see her summarize the complex, nuanced art of deep listening into such a condensed talk is a marvel. This is a gift for humanity. I’m a bit sad that most people watching UA-cam won’t get it, but I know I’ll be watching this over and over again. Thank you.

@judejackson2600 Lol, I realize that was contentious. But when I left this comment a couple days after this was posted, most of the comment here was literally “huh? what is she talking about?” 😅

thank you. Yes, well I wasn't impressed either with how she put across those concepts... wasn't inspired at all. Maybe she does better as a podcaster journalist. @@jonathankoepersonal

    1. The world is constantly unfolding through a generative process we are part of. Learn to appreciate the constructive, good nature this process.
    2. Love the questions that you ask more than the answers you can provide. By doing this, you may reach the correct answers.
    3. Accept yourself as part of the whole.
In my take, (1) allows us to focus and get involved in the positive emergent phenomena that take place in this world, (2) gives us chance to act cooperatively more than competitively, and (3) gives us the wider perspective we need to feel fulfilled and integrated with our environment. All together help us to live in a humble state of awe and learning, contributing cautiously and consciously to the whole we are part of.

Life full of wisdom makes a huge difference not just to your own well-being and inner capacities, but to everyone around you. Wisdom is something others may find quite challenging to attain.

I've watched quite a few TED talks on this channel, and NGL, this is the first one I had to play at 1.5x speed because she talks so slow, and at 1.5x it seemed normal speed.

It might be cuz I'm not a native English speaker, but I honestly didn't get what she's talking about. What's this "generative narrative"?

    • @OrdinarySpeaker

She means it in contrast to the narratives of destruction (of climate, society etc). You could also speak of narratives of creation (sounds a bit religious, though, which is probably why she didn’t use that)

The news and political narrative is that everything is awful and getting worse, what she refers to as catastrophizing. Going on at the same time are people helping to make the world a better place both in everyday ways and in large ways. Societies collapse but they also renew themselves and solve their problems, don't forget the good.
