I totally agree with you about the house/museum. We used to go before they built that visitor center and you're right it was more personal then. I do love the house though and it is so impressive to think what he accomplished while living there. It always made me sad that only one of his children survived into adulthood and there are no more descendents. It also surprised me that he struggled financially as well. He had lots of success but a lot of sadness too. I've never been to Harriet Beecher Stowe's house next door but I need to visit there as well. We are so lucky in New England to have so many historic houses and museums to visit especially those of famous authors. I loved visiting Emily Dickinson's house in Amherst too. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for the validation! I agree - Mark Twain is fascinating. I'm definitely going to go back to Harriet Beecher Stowe's house. It has more limited visiting hours, but it seems friendlier. I've never been to Emily Dickinson's house and now it's officially on my list. Thanks for the tip!

I loved this video. I love historical buildings and homes. Although I am only 1/2 way through, I wanted to say I hope you left them a review. I’m sure there are others who felt the same way. I know I would be disappointed. We recently visited the Beatrix Potter exhibition in Atlanta, and we were allowed to take pictures. My daughter and I literally took photos of everything.

OOH! I would LOVE to see the Beatrix Potter collection! I'm so jealous! No, I didn't leave a review, but you're absolutely right. I should do that. They should hear the feedback.

Hi Chris, thank you for the video on Mark Twain.
I also like to have a tour with someone knowledgable than playing a part.

Right???? I hate to say anything snarky, but sometimes it's nice when the tour guide just gets to the point.

Actually the actors study & do have loads on info. Or take a regular docent tour. All are excellent.

My husband and I went in 1985 with my daughter who was only one at the time. My husband snapped a picture of my daughter who was in a stroller in the front of the house. Quite enjoyable as he is one of my favorite authors. Nice video

That's so sweet! I love that story! I recently came across Mark Twain's autographed picture at Brimfield Antiques Flea Market. I know he signed quite a few things, so not terribly rare, but really fun to see.

I am retired and volunteer there. The people who work & volunteer there are VERY dedicated to “the family & the house”. The little cafeteria is good. The house, the Atheneum & Hartford Stage are gems of Hartford. The museum has a wonderful gift/book shop. I think the visitor center with the soft pale cream color & Twain’s sayings are lovely. The center is used for great lectures MANY of which are free. There are also free community events. They have virtual & live events too. The character tours are brilliantly done by actors who are always increasing their knowledge of Twain, the family & the times. I took one (the gossipy maid) with a friend just after lockdown & we loved it! I am sorry you had a meh visit. That really is not typical. Oh. The historic character tours are more expensive than the regular docent tours which are also great.

I'm so glad you reached out to share more information about the site. I really shouldn't judge a place on just one visit. I'm reassured to know that there are volunteers like you keeping the place thriving!
