That is straight muscle memory. Years of doing the same movements again and again. He has perfected the man who has practiced a kick 10,000 times. It is a true pleasure to see someone who has perfected a skill perform it.
That's not what muscle memory is. Muscle memory is remembering the shape it was through both repetitive isometric and isotonic exercises. It actually goes away after about 5-7 yrs if you don't repeat it. His regular memory is what is reminding him of his movements but his muscle memory is why he isn't dropping the rifle. The fact he can catch it but he's clearly still in shape so his muscle memory is in tact. But his minds memory is what completed this task. Interesting fact: if you work out properly for many years and stop for about 6-12 months. Go off diet etc you can go back and it would only take about 1-2 months of your same training program to get back to where you where. Even if you cause yourself entropy. That's what muscle memory is.
I remember watching my Grandfather pick up a British 303 and doing something very similar. He said it'd been nearly 40 years since his time in the service. I think he was just as surprised as the rest of us. I guess that's what they mean by muscle memory. Very cool! Thanks for posting this.
Right and the Marines at that time were sporting M14's which weighed a tad over the 303, both weapons were not light. However the efficacy of both the British 303 & the American M14 were so powerful and accurate, that most soldiers never complained all that much about lugging them around battlefields. Love the short bud!!
However I can tell you from my own experiences in the middle east, that lugging around a .50 cal sniper rifle on top of battle rattle, my .45, and my M4A1 with 7 assault rifle mags, 4 handgun mags, and several types of .50 rounds. My favorite of which were the A.P.I. rounds. I liked to think of them as a little bit of HELL packaged for a great delivery system. Can take out light to medium tanks with 1 or 2 well placed shots down range. Eventually even heavy tanks won't be able to shrug it off...

There used to be a video on YT of the changing of the guard where the inspecting officer accidently plunged the bayonet into the soldier's foot. The soldier barely, & I mean barely, reacted.

Our district takes middle schoolers to Washington DC every spring. When I was younger and went it was DRILLED into us that we MUST be respectful in DC and anywhere we went. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was even more so. We had a small hiccup when we were there for the changing of the guard. A friend of mine was standing by me and a bird POOPED on him!! Do you know how difficult it was for 9th graders (we were still in junior high then) not too lose it when something like that happens? Also when we went we were not allowed to wear anything with logos or words on it.
Is it respectful to twirl your gun around like a baton instead of just doing your duty and checking the weapon and moving on? How does making it a circus add respect?

For those of you who do not know, once a Tomb Guard always a tomb guard. When you pass the training, you are given a badge with a number. If you dishonor yourself or the Army at any time during or after your service, your badge is taken and your number is stricken from the record.

I never understood why this garnered so much praise, but I think I am starting to understand. Is this a particular set of manuevers, done in a particular order? Or, is it just random? I am getting the notion that is a certain set of acts that had to be remembered in a particular order, which is much more impressive than I had first realized. The hand-eye coordination is fairly awe-inspiring, too. It's not like he is twirling it like a baton. It is very deliberate and strong. Either way, this is a man of the brotherhood, a man that served his country. Not much more on this Earth you could do that would capture my appreciation and admiration than that. Our soldiers are receiving a startling increase in criticism, and deplorable decline in respect. Thank you, to this man for his service, and any other of any branch.
Some of us Veterans went to the tomb of the unknown soldier. And to our surprise as the soldiers changed shifts, the soldier recognized us vets and as he walked by, he scraped his heel with his taps as a salute of respect for us, and what an honor for a soldier of his caliber to pay tribute to us vets. Thank you soldiers and God Bless you.

That was incredible! Spot on perfection. I had the honor of witnessing the changing of the guard during a 6th grade field trip to Washington DC. (I'm 55 now). Still remember it clear as day. (but nowadays I can't remember most stuff I did after 5 minutes)

For him to be so adept at it suggests to me that he's kept up the practice to some degree. This is the Old Guard or the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier guards. Part of their daily practices is doing what he is doing as they have The Changing of the Guard. One Guard inspecs the weapon that the other presents, ceremoniously insuring that the soldier is ready and prepared to protect the graves of the fallen heroes. Wow what a great insight

What you said is Not Disrespectful it's a Compliment. With Practice comes Skill. With Skill comes Art. With Art you have Beauty. This Drill is about Skill, Discipline, and Showmanship. The Skill and Discipline are for those that have Fallen. The Showmanship is for those that come to see the Guards and pay Respect to the Fallen.
As showy as it may seem, there's a purpose to these drills. If you can spin your rifle like this in practice, there's little to no chance that you'll drop your weapon in combat.

Some of us Veterans went to the tomb of the unknown soldier. And to our surprise as the soldiers changed shifts, the soldier recognized us vets and as he walked by, he scraped his heel with his taps as a salute of respect for us, and what an honor for a soldier of his caliber to pay tribute to us vets. Thank you soldiers and God Bless you.

That was incredible! Spot on perfection. I had the honor of witnessing the changing of the guard during a 6th grade field trip to Washington DC. (I'm 55 now). Still remember it clear as day. (but nowadays I can't remember most stuff I did after 5 minutes)

This seems to me like a perishable skill. For him to be so adept at it suggests to me that he's kept up the practice to some degree.

This is the Old Guard or the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier guards. Part of their daily practices is doing what he is doing as they have The Changing of the Guard. One Guard inspecs the weapon that the other presents, ceremoniously insuring that the soldier is ready and prepared to protect the graves of the fallen heroes. Wow what a great insight

This Drill is about Skill, Discipline, and Showmanship.
The Skill and Discipline are for those that have Fallen. The Showmanship is for those that come to see the Guards and pay Respect to the Fallen.
As showy as it may seem, there's a purpose to these drills. If you can spin your rifle like this in practice, there's little to no chance that you'll drop your weapon in combat.
